Search Engine Optimization: The Basics
1|Page Search Engine Optimization: The Basics Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the ranking of a website, so as to make it appear in the top few websites of the results that are shown when a relevant keyword is typed in the search bar of a search engine (e.g. Google Search). A higher ranking is likely to result in an increase in the number of views that the website attracts. The process of SEO is especially useful for sale oriented websites, which means that the website sells certain products or services online. A website with a higher ranking is more likely to attract a greater number of potential buyers to the website. Not every viewer is converted into a customer, and the conversion rate depends on various factors which include (but are not limited to) the website design and content. Conversion marketing is another science in itself, which employs tactics that influence all relevant factors to yield a higher conversion rate. However, the purpose of this article is to elaborate on the basics of search engine optimization. SEO is bifurcated into on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page optimization refers to activities that are performed to improve web page listing in natural search results by controlling factors such as the coding of the web page. Examples of such activities are meta tagging and keyword placement. On the other hand, off-page optimization refers to manipulating off-site factors that are not controlled by the coding on your page such as link popularity and page rank. SEO techniques are of two types; White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO. White Hat SEO techniques are approved by Google, which means that these are authentic means to improve the ranking of a website. Examples of such methods are developing high quality content and optimizing as well as restructuring website HTML. Black Hat SEO techniques on the other hand are not permitted but, by finding loopholes in the guidelines provided by Google, one can find unlawful ways to improve their website’s rankings (such as link spamming and keyword stuffing). SEO is an ongoing process and even if one obtains a ranking in the top 10 search results of all major search engines, one cannot just sit back. The rankings keep changing every week and there is a lot of competition. In order to maintain a steady position amongst the top 10 ranked websites it is necessary to be consistently active with regards to SEO such as by constantly monitoring keywords and being involved in information rework. http://www.researchomatic.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-73013.html
