A Guide to Chimney Lining Systems

Chimney lining is becoming an increasingly popular way to prevent the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and improve energy efficiency in homes throughout the UK. Because a lot of chimneys are currently lined with lime mortar, they’re susceptible to decay with prolonged use, which can result in problems with the performance of your fireplace. Getting new chimney lining will help you avoid these problems and ensure that your home or building is completely compliant with building regulation standards. When looking for a new type of lining for your chimney, it’s important to know what options are available and what the advantages and disadvantages of each are.

Types of chimney lining systems Below are the three main types of chimney lining solutions that are used today -

Eldfast

Eldfast is a very popular choice of chimney lining. Manufactured in the UK and made from a ceramic aggregate powder mix and bonding agents, it’s both easy to install and fire resistant. One of the biggest benefits of using Eldfast for existing chimneys is that because it’s installed from inside the chimney flue itself, there’s no need to damage the brickwork to install it. –

Eldfast also maintains the internal space of your chimney flue, which prevents problems associated with reducing the space, such as soot coming down the flue. Overall it’s an excellent choice for almost any type of chimney.

Pumice

Pumice is a range of chimney liners that come in diameters from 130mm up to 1000mm. Pumice liners are suitable for a wide range of uses, including open fires, cookers, pellet stoves and Manor firechests. Because Pumice liners are made from lightweight materials, they’re very easy to cut and handle. –

The lengths available for Pumice are 600mm and 1000mm, so for a typical job, there’s fewer joints to contend with and therefore it’s fast to install. The materials used for Pumice mean it’s resistant to high temperatures and very energy efficient.

Mulitflex

Multiflex is a range of stainless steel multifuel liners that are used to solve common problems with older chimneys that use wood, coal, gas or oil. Multiflex is recognised by many chimney specialists in the UK as being the most adaptable flue liner on the market. Because of the high level of flexibility that Multiflex liners offer, they’re particularly suitable for chimneys with bends, such as offset Victorian chimneys. –

The double-skin constructions of Multiflex liners provide a gas-tight solutions that’s both safe and allows for the safe passage of gases from within the flue. It minimises the risk of common problems such as tar deposits and allows for the efficient operation of both fires and stoves.
