Living, Buying & Selling on the Lake TWO REALTORS FIND SUCCESS ON SML Two local realtors are raising the standards for buying and selling homes in Smith Mountain Lake. Utilizing the latest technologies, smart market research, and innovative business strategies, they aren’t just meeting their clients’ needs—they’re blowing their expectations out of the water. VICKI MILLEHAN: TURNING A LOVE OF THE LAKE INTO A THRIVING BUSINESS
DEBBIE SHELTON: INDUSTRY-LEADING KNOWLEDGE & SERVICE, WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH
raining, education, and research aside, Vicki Millehan has the best possible foundation for a successful real estate career: 23 years of personal experience selling luxury properties in Smith Mountain Lake communities. And she’s also experienced the area firsthand, as an active resident who has taken advantage of everything SML has to offer. Her track record speaks for itself: Vicki sells, on average, an impressive 35 to 40 homes per year. In spite of a tough economy, she consistently ranks as one of the most successful real estate agents in the State of Virginia. That success stems from her genuine passion and enthusiasm for real estate. “I truly love my job,” she says. “Nothing brings me more satisfaction than helping a client find the home they’ve been dreaming of—the home that meets all of their needs, and then some.” Vicki has a high volume of clients, yet she manages to give each one her full and undivided attention through every detail, from the initial contact to closing, and beyond. Not only has Vicki marketed some of the most sought-after communities at Smith Mountain Lake, she has also called them home. Vicki currently lives at The Water’s Edge, an exclusive country club community with more than 13.5 miles of shoreline comprised of 712 acres. In her free time, Vicki enjoys spending time with her family and friends at The Water’s Edge or enjoying the lake from a different perspective.
As a professional realtor, Debbie is committed to providing her clients with the highest quality of expertise, service, and communication. While she has an in-depth knowledge of the Smith Mountain Lake real estate market, it is her standard of service that sets her apart from other local agents. Above all, Debbie strives to help her clients achieve their dreams of home ownership and a higher quality of life. “Once I’ve educated a buyer on the area, they generally fall in love with it,” Debbie says. “From there, it’s just a matter of matching them with the right property that meets their preferences and lifestyle.” The education part is easy for Debbie, as her knowledge of the Lake communities and real estate market are second-tonone. After 25 years of living in the area, she has a firsthand knowledge of the culture, landscapes, economy, and recreation. From comparable sales to neighborhood demographics, Debbie has access to all the information her clients need to make informed and prudent real estate decisions. And with a belief that the successful real estate agent never stops learning, she participates in ongoing training and education. As a small business owner, Debbie takes a personalized approach to each client interaction. “Every seller, buyer, and home are truly unique,” she points out. “That’s the key—to embrace the fact that no two transactions will ever be alike… and that they shouldn’t be handled the same.”

“We want to thank Debbie for helping us through the selling process and for the creative thinking.” — CLIFF & BEV
“Debbie certainly made an otherwise stressful situation a lot easier.” — BILL & ELAINE
Realizing that the buying and selling process can be complicated and time-consuming, Debbie works to make real estate transactions as quick and smooth as possible. She does her best to minimize surprises, prepare clients for what’s coming, and stay connected after closing in case any additional services are needed. By attending to every last detail herself, Debbie helps to eliminate the stress of what is often the most important financial decision in her clients’ lives.
TWICE THE KNOWLEDGE, DOUBLE THE ATTENTION Vicki and Debbie aren’t the only successful realtors on Smith Mountain Lake, but they’re setting themselves apart with a focus on personalized service, in-depth knowledge, and an exceptional attention to detail. They also believe in the power of pooled resources—rather than competing for clients, they are working together to promote the beauty, vibrancy, and vitality of the place they are proud to call home.
“Working with Vicki was a fantastic experience! She took time to understand our needs and expectations, and then worked tirelessly to exceed them. Her personal touch and attention made us feel special. Even after we’d settled into the house, Vicki remains a good friend and neighbor, welcoming us to Smith Mountain Lake.“ — MARGY & GERRY

January/February 2014
In September, we asked readers to weigh in on their Smith Mountain Lake favorites — everything from best marina to best burger to best place to take a visitor. And while this is the 13th time Laker Media has compiled the information, we took things to a whole new level this year, utilizing mobile- and tablet-friendly software to accommodate daily voting. We added 23 new categories, ramped up promotion and extended the voting period to a full two months.

Janis and Lars Hagen of Moneta celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by cruising to the Mediterranean in October. The couple enjoyed port calls in Italy, France and Spain. Instead of the Laker, the Hagens posed in front of the Colosseum in Rome with a copy of the Smith Mountain Lake Newcomer and Visitor Guide, published annually by Laker Media in partnership with the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce.
In September, Moneta’s Don Fink took the Laker to Green Bay to watch the Packers beat the Redskins 38-20 at historic Lambeau Field. Fink said nine members of his family – all Packer fans – traveled from across the country to cheer on the home team.

Greg and Kimba Dalferes traveled from SML to Sitka, Alaska, last summer to meet family members for an annual fishing trip. The couple brought home 250 pounds of salmon and halibut. Before departing, Kimba took this photo of husband Greg at the Sitka airport. “Gratefully, this is the closest we’ve ever come to an actual Alaskan grizzly,” she said.
Gabby Pecoraro (back row on left) took the Laker to La Herradura, Spain, last summer where she participated in a studyabroad program. A student at Cosby High School in Midlothian who spends summers in Huddleston, Gabby sent this photo of her Fourth of July celebration with her housemates and members of her host family.
John and Nancy Horton rode the Glacier and Bernina Express railroads through Switzerland in June, where they visited Zurich, Gstadd, Zermatt, St. Moritz and Lucerne. The couple posed for this photo at nearby Lake Como, Italy. “We looked for George Clooney at Lake Como, but he was nowhere to be found,” Nancy said. “Sigh...”

Amaretto lovers may be surprised to learn that the flavor of Amaretto di Saronno, the world’s most popular almond-flavored liqueur, comes not from a nut, but from apricot pits. Closely related to almonds, an apricot’s pit may be sweet or bitter, depending on the variety. In America, most apricots are grown for their fruit and have bitter pits, but in the Mediterranean you’ll find the sweet-pit or sweet kernel apricot varieties. One of the oldest sweet kernel hybrids is ‘Moor Park,’ which dates to at least 1760 in England. If you open up the sweet pit of one of these varieties, you’ll find inside a seed that looks and tastes much like an almond. 22 January • February 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
Traditionally, beer is bottled in dark glass because exposure to light gives the beer a “skunky” taste. This fact has been known for centuries, but it wasn’t until 2001 that scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill determined the chemical process that creates that unpleasant taste. They learned that isohumulone compounds in hops break down into free radicals when exposed to light. These free radicals are chemically similar to skunk secretions, ergo the taste. This unfortunate transformation can happen quickly; some beer drinkers will notice a skunky flavor at the bottom of a pint glass left sitting in the sun while they drank it.

Knowing this fact, why is beer ever sold in clear bottles? Clear bottles are cheaper. To ameliorate potential breakdown problems, some massproduced beers are made with a chemically altered hop compound that doesn’t turn skunky, and some brewers will sell clear-bottled beers in a closed box to avoid light. And that wedge of lime often served with beer? Its acidic taste disguises any skunky flavor. Until 2006, the bright red color of Campari came from carmine dye, sourced from cochineal, the white fuzzy scale pest found on prickly pear cactus. Company officials say it was removed due to supply problems. A section of “The Drunken Botanist” is dedicated to strange brews. In the Andes, monkey puzzle tree seeds are brewed into a mildly alcoholic ceremonial drink called mudai. To speed fermentation, sometimes the Indians chew the boiled seeds and spit them back into the fermenting mixture. Saliva enzymes help break down the starches. With an ancestry that goes back at least 180 million years, monkey puzzle trees are special, motivating the Chilean government to declare them a national monument. Hence, mudai is quite possibly the world’s only alcoholic beverage derived from a national monument.
Among the fascinating stories and details about pomologists (apple experts), vintners, distillers and monks – and the ingredients that inspire them – are recipes for cocktails, ranging from standards such as the classic Margarita to exotics such as Sazerac, a New Orleans classic that’s the perfect gateway drink for anyone unaccustomed to licorice-flavored cocktails. “The Drunken Boatanist” is a book you’ll want to drink up, making a point to remember the information tidbits you want to pull out to amaze and amuse your friends at the next wedding or cocktail party. Cheers! Salud! Skol! Prost! To your health!
ABOVE The valuable cochineal dye once used to color Campari comes from the fuzzy white scale pest that sucks the nutrients and moisture from prickly pear cacti.

Corkscrew Connoisseur Author and lake resident Don Bull is passionate about his world-class collection of corkscrews, which totals more than 10,000.

O
f all the things a Laker could do to occupy the available time that comes with retirement, few may be more “screwy” than Don Bull’s hobby. The lower level of Bull’s home in Moneta is a veritable museum to the common corkscrew — except that when you have one of the largest and most notable collections in the world, the majority of them are anything but the common kitchen-drawer implements. And so it is with Bull’s collection, numbering some 10,000 corkscrews and spanning the myriad corkscrew designs known to man. Most are designed to be hand-held, but there are table and even floormounted models as well. As the author or co-author of more than 30 collector’s books, Bull is regarded as one of the world’s foremost corkscrew experts. The recognition has earned him membership in the ICCA — International Correspondence of Corkscrew Addicts. It’s an exclusive society, limited for practicality to 50 of the world’s most distinguished
collectors and experts. Members convene annually to discuss their passion and lay the groundwork for one-to-one buying, selling, trading and ogling sessions. “There are doctors, lawyers, business executives, curators and dignitaries – fascinating, enjoyable people who have cultivated extensive contacts in the subculture of corkscrew collecting,” Bull said. “I’m intrigued by the corkscrews themselves, of course, but it is the people who are ultimately the most appealing aspect. They become like family.” Sites for ICCA gatherings typically alternate between the United States and Europe, with the most recent occurring in Belgium. Bull and his wife of 45 years, Bonnie, followed that session with a visit to Russia where they dined with a major wine importer who owned a “modest” corkscrew collection, which Bull defined as “a few hundred pieces.” “One never knows where a new friendship like that will lead,” Bull said. “But he has the interest and resources to become a major player. We will definitely stay connected.”

“There are doctors, lawyers, business executives, curators and dignitaries – fascinating, enjoyable people who have cultivated extensive contacts in the subculture of corkscrew collecting.” Don Bull, ColleCtor
The Bulls hosted the ICCA gathering in 2003, guiding attendees to Roanoke Valley attractions that included VMI, Natural Bridge and a lunch cruise on the Virginia Dare. Of course, members also spent time in the Bulls’ lake-level collection room and adjoining office, family room and guest areas, all of which have extensive displays of corkscrews and other wine-related objects d’art.
BEER BEGINNINGS
Bull’s collecting passion began with beer openers, devices used in bars and homes until 1910 when newly invented closures replaced the traditional corks. “I was drawn to the advertising slogans that those openers carried back then,” he said. “My collection grew to where I had 4,000 beer openers that were intended to double as wine corkscrews. I ended up selling off the single-purpose beer openers to buy more wine screws.” He acquired corkscrews for about 20 years before retiring from a management role at a Connecticut manufacturing firm in 1997. Then, collecting became “a full-time obsession.”
Bull said about 70 percent of his collection “has found me,” referring corkscrews he’s obtained from those who come to him with items they wish to sell or trade. As a result, the display drawers and backlit shelves in his Moneta home are packed with wine opening devices of every description. “It’s amazing how much room you can create just by moving what you already have a bit closer together,” he said with a grin. But despite the collection’s size and range, Bull knows where every item is displayed or stored. That’s how he finds just the right ones to illustrate his books.
PASSIONATE ABOUT PUBLISHING, TOO
Writing limited-market books is not really a profitable undertaking, Bull noted. “If you factor in all the time it takes, you’re looking at making maybe two cents an hour,” he said. “No, you have to really enjoy it, or it makes no sense.” Bull handles most of his own photography, clustering related examples into detailed still-life close-ups that make for organized presentation on a book’s pages. He captures the images with a hand-held digital Nikon, with subjects arrayed on SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

a portable light table that he can also pack up for excursions to Europe, Australia and elsewhere. His most recent “Wine Antiques and Collectibles,” to which some 70 international collectors contributed photographs and information, was published in July 2013. It’s a 336-page, nearly 6-pound sequel to his 1999 volume, “The Ultimate Corkscrew Book.” “‘Ultimate’ was indeed the ultimate back then, but the collection has grown,” Bull said, noting that he’s working now with a Canadian co-author on a volume called “World Class Corkscrews.” “That will be the ‘ultimate-ultimate,’ the very last,” he deadpanned. “But then, I’ve said that before.” Bull’s hefty, hardcover, coffee-table volumes, priced from $59.95 to $89.95, appeal to a relatively small group of experts, so only abut 5,000 copies are printed. The smaller and less expensive “Just for Openers” has sold nearly its entire run of 15,000 copies since 1999. Bull has completed an expanded sequel, “Just for Openers II,” that is double in size and will go on sale later this year.
The Final Phase
With that, Bull noted that he’s passed the “acquisition phase” of his hobby and is content to enjoy owning his current collection. While he often receives boxes of wine paraphernalia on consignment

to sell for others — corkscrews plus cooper’s tools, cradles, tasting cups, strainers and the like — he rarely sees something he just has to have for himself. “My collection doesn’t have many holes,” he said. He classifies his collection’s status as “available to the right buyer,” and has had a few inquiries, mostly from current or wannabe museum curators. If a buyer were willing to take the collection in its entirety, Bull said he’d be willing to close this chapter of his life. “The last thing you want to do is let someone cherry pick what you have,” he noted.
Hardly a Wine Fanatic
Asked about his enjoyment of the liquids his corkscrews are designed to access, Bull professed nonchalance. “My cellar is huge – it’s called Kroger, and there’s an entire aisle of the stuff,” he joked. “I buy what we enjoy and have no intention of leaving a bunch of exquisite vintages to my kids like so many wine fanatics end up doing.” So, which is Bull’s everyday wine opener? “It’s a German-made plastic job that sells for $6.99. Hardly an exotic corkscrew, but it gets the job done,” he said. For more information and photos, visit Bull’s website, corkscrewmuseum.com.

February is American Heart Month, a national initiative that aims to prevent heart attacks and strokes in the United States by calling attention to the causes of cardiovascular disease.
A
ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every four deaths in the United States is from heart disease. Fifty percent of people older than 50 will die from a heart attack or stroke. Blood tests to determine cholesterol levels are a common way doctors work to reduce this statistic, but normal levels may not always tell the whole story. Luckily for residents of Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area, one local specialist offers additional testing and treatment procedures to help patients more accurately manage their risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

“You can have good cholesterol numbers and still be at high risk for stroke or heart attack because of the amount of low-density lipoprotein [LDL] particles floating around in your blood stream,” said Dr. George Chaconas, who has been treating lakearea patients for more than two decades at the family medical clinic in Burnt Chimney he operates with partner Dr. Eric Bourhill. After years of seeing patients develop heart disease despite using standard preventative treatments, Chaconas started taking a closer look into atherosclerosis – plaque buildup in the arteries – and its prevention. He earned board certification in lipidology (the study of lipids such as cholesterol, triglycerides and fat stored in the bloodstream or tissues) in 2009 and began offering patients advanced testing, including Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT). The non-invasive exam takes about 30 minutes and measures the thickness of the carotid artery wall in the neck using ultrasound technology. The thicker the wall, the more the patient is at risk for a heart attack or stroke. “CIMT provides your vascular age, which basically tells how old your arteries are,” said Chaconas, who said he’s one of approximately 20 clinical lipidologists in Virginia and 600 in the United States. Once he determines a patient’s risk level, Chaconas sets lipid goals and helps create a plan to reduce the quantity of LDL particles.

Most people I see end up needing medication such as statins,” he said. Smith Mountain Lake resident Michael Adler, 76, said he is grateful to have a primary care physician who also happens to specialize in this type of disease prevention. “My need for cholesterol treatment [became evident] as a result of a routine blood test that Dr. Chaconas conducted,” said Adler. “He then used sonograms to look at the state of my arteries, which helped him determine what medications would help.”

“For those like me who are fond of living, having a lipid specialist nearby is a tremendous complement to the superior healthcare already available [at Smith Mountain Lake].” Michael adler, heart patient
Adler said the preventative treatment Chaconas provides gives him peace of mind. “By knowing the condition of my arteries, I feel I am decreasing the odds of having a heart attack,” said Adler. “For those like me who are fond of living, having a lipid specialist nearby is a tremendous complement to the superior healthcare already available [at Smith Mountain Lake].” Chaconas sees patients referred to him with complicated lipid abnormalities at the Burnt Chimney clinic as well as one day a week at the Center for Advanced Lipid Management (CALM), a Roanoke facility he opened in 2011. Between both practices, Chaconas has a full professional schedule. But when he isn’t treating patients,
boating on Smith Mountain Lake is his favorite way to spend time with his wife, their friends and his four children. “As a child, I always wanted to live by a lake. So having a home at Smith Mountain Lake is a dream come true,” said Chaconas, who earned an undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. “I did my residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and after a couple of years in Annapolis, Md., the expenses, crowds and traffic of the city encouraged me to return to a much more peaceful place, which I found at this lake community. “I can’t imagine a more laid-back place to work and live.”

rowing up at Smith Mountain Lake, MacKenzie Cain always considered herself fortunate. But luck, she said, was truly on her side when, during a night out with friends in 2009 in Dewey Beach, Del., she crossed paths with Rich Calame. “I spotted him across the bar, walked up to him and started talking,” she said. “We parted from each other without exchanging numbers, and I was pretty bummed about it. But then I got a phone call from him two days later.” Rich serendipitously came across one of MacKenzie’s friends the next day and asked for a phone number. He called, and the brief encounter at the bar bloomed into something much more. “MacKenzie has a smile that will make anyone’s bad day better, and her laugh is infectious,” he said. When it came time to propose, Rich knew what would make his request irresistible. “If there is one thing MacKenzie loves most in life, it is a donut with her morning coffee,” he said. “Early 62 January • February 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
one morning, I had a fresh box of donuts waiting on the counter. When MacKenzie peeked into the box to find a donut that had, ‘Will you marry me?’ written on it with a ring in the center, she jumped back three feet and screamed, ‘Oh, my God!’ Then she turned and saw me on bended knee asking for her hand in marriage. Of course, she said yes.” When planning their September 2012 wedding, MacKenzie, a 2004 graduate of Franklin County High School, didn’t think twice about the venue. “I always knew I wanted to get married in my hometown, and I was fortunate enough to grow up at Smith Mountain Lake,” she said. “I was pretty set on getting married in a Catholic church, so our ceremony was at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta. As for the reception, Bernard’s Landing Resort and Conference Center was the first and only choice. Our guests would be able to stay there, and after celebrating, simply walk back to their rooms.” The bride, who has an affinity for decorating, chose a classic design theme with nautical touches. The

bridesmaids wore navy gowns and the groomsmen simple tuxedos. Abundant candles and nautical rope accents adorned the reception venue. Mild weather allowed for an outdoor setup, and MacKenzie said the lake views complemented the scene perfectly. “My mom and I took the whole thing head-on, and I think we did a pretty good job. We would stuff invitations, prepare party favors or pack welcome bags with a glass of wine in hand,” said MacKenzie, the daughter of lake residents Jim and Nancy Cain. Rich was not to be left out of the preparations, however. His requests included a buffet catered by The Landing, a Frank Sinatra song for the first dance and milk and cookies for dessert. He also masterminded a personalized garter toss. “MacKenzie is a San Diego Chargers fan and I am a New York Giants fan,” he said. “On the wedding day, MacKenzie wore two garters, one for the Chargers and one for the Giants. We told the crowd that whichever garter I selected would determine which team we would raise our children to be fans of.

To my chagrin, the Chargers were selected and not a football game goes by that she doesn’t remind me.” Most of the couple’s 135 guests came from out of the area, and MacKenzie said she was eager to show off the Smith Mountain Lake region. The bride placed area guides and information in welcome bags, encouraging everyone to make the most of the lake. “From what Rich and I heard, our guests were all over the [lake area] during our wedding weekend. others played golf and most relaxed by the water,” said MacKenzie. “They said it was absolutely gorgeous or that it was a hidden gem. Most couldn’t believe this is where I grew up. Several of our friends want to return for a longer stay.” Rich said bringing so many loved ones together was a highlight of their special weekend. “I still can’t get over the fact that everyone who means so much to me and everyone who means so much to MacKenzie were all in the same room. It still amazes me when I think about it,” he said. Thanks to an idyllic location and excellent local vendors, MacKenzie said the couple’s big day was perfect. “I would tell other couples planning their wedding at SML that everything can get overwhelming at times, but just remember where you are getting married. Not many people get the views Smith Mountain Lake provides,” she said. “Take it all in and enjoy every minute of it.” The Calames reside in Arlington, where Rich is a mechanical engineer and MacKenzie a resources manager for an IT contracting company. They visit her parents at the lake whenever possible. “It is nice to head down to the lake because it is both a vacation and a family home all in one,” said Rich.

Jack and Karen Phillips prepare to install the sign at Bedford Landings, the B&B they opened in December near SML Airport.
New improved Smith Mountain Lake’s guest lodging landscape has taken a turn toward the diverse over the past year with the addition of three quaint new options — two located on the water and one sure to appeal to aviation enthusiasts.
74 January • February 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
Bedford Landings
The lake area’s newest lodging option, which opened in December, is Bedford Landings, a bed and breakfast located beside the runway at Smith Mountain Lake Airport. Guests can arrive by car, boat or airplane which, according to owner and innkeeper Karen Phillips, should make it particularly attractive to pilots seeking destinations that satisfy their urge to take flight. Phillips and husband Jack bought the property several years ago with intent to sell a 12-acre horse farm near Raleigh, N.C., and move to SML permanently when Karen retired as a professor from N.C. State University and Jack from designing medical devices. A hangar for their two experimental aircraft was completed in 2006, but selling the farmstead — and arranging financing for the B&B’s construction — took longer than expected. However, a chance meeting in 2013 with Bart Wilner, a member of Hometown Bank’s board of directors, proved fortuitous. The three met while the Phillips were serving as extras on the set of “Wish You Well,” a film produced by Laker Sara Elizabeth Timmons. Wilner, one of the film’s financial backers, helped the couple acquire the mortgage needed to complete construction.

The couple served as general contractors, construction workers, craftsmen and painters for the 5,700-square-foot timber-frame structure that houses a master suite for the innkeepers and four distinct guest rooms, each COUrTESy Of BEdfOrd LANdINgS decorated with a different theme. Guests will find themselves immersed in fishing, forest or flight décor or in a “fourth room” that Karen modifies by season or occasion (think honeymoon). All rooms (three queen, one king) have private bathrooms, and two feature gas fireplaces. Guests have access to a second-floor lounge area and stargazing porch, a breakfast room just off the oversized kitchen, a theater room downstairs and guest patio with hot tub. Exposed timbers with mortise-andtenon joints give the interior a vaulted, spacious, modern-rustic appeal. “Jack can do just about anything,” Karen Phillips said of her husband’s construction prowess. “He reads a book, studies the [building] code, watches a YouTube video, and then just does it. He built a model of what we were planning — and the house looks just like he said it would.” Karen, a Blacksburg native who taught family and child development at Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Ole Miss, has traded her construction apron for the kitchen variety, becoming the inn’s breakfast chef. “I am really a stickler for how breakfast is prepared and presented,” she said, noting Jack, who recently underwent special training, is “the biscuit guy.” Rates at Bedford Landings run $125-$180 per night in season (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day) and $100-$150 in off-season months. Gills Creek Marina and lodGe
Gills Creek Marina, located at 790 Fox Chase Road off Scruggs Road (channel marker G2), now offers four lodge rooms in a completely renovated building just up the hill from the marina. Each room features two queen-size beds, sofa, cable TV, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and covered deck overlooking the marina and Gills Creek beyond. “Our facility is perfect for family reunions and overflow visitors,” said Jane Boney, who manages the property. “We offer the guest rooms you don’t have to clean.” The renovation helped the lodge nearly triple its occupancy rate from 2012 to 2013, said Boney. “We’re getting lots of repeat visitors and referrals — especially for getaways from Roanoke and Salem … and lodging for lake events like fishing tournaments and the chili festival,” she said, adding that fishermen particularly like the convenience of free in-water docking at the marina’s transient slips. “Some bring grills and fry their catch in the parking area outside,” Boney said. In-season rates are $120 per night; fall is $90 and winter $80. For more information, visit gillscreekmarina.com.

Halesford Harbour Inn
Another on-water lodging option recently opened at Halesford Harbour, off Virginia 122 (R28), just north of Hales Ford Bridge. Twenty three newly-renovated double-queen rooms, one king-bed room and a family suite with two queen bedrooms, two baths and bright lounge with windows overlooking the lake are available. “With its comfortable gathering area and kitchenette, the suite is especially popular for wedding parties and family reunions,” said inn manager Jim Shauberger. General manager Tom Buck said occupancy rates for the inn are running about twice what he had expected. He and assistant general manager Melissa Heft noted the appeal of the resort-style amenities Halesford Harbour maintains for its RV tenants, all of which are available to inn guests as well. Included are boat slips, use of the launching ramp, two beaches, children’s play area, wi-fi, flat screen TVs, availability of rental boats, golf carts, kayaks and canoes, and the popular Jake’s Place waterfront restaurant. New is a patio with gas fire pit and grill outside the inn, which overlooks the cove and boat slips. “Guests love to gather here, especially on nights when Jake’s has an island band playing on its patio deck,” said Heft.
Rates at Halesford Harbour Inn vary by season, day of the week and holidays. Weekly rates also are offered. Visit halesfordharbour.com for details.

family-owned deli and bakery with friendly service, reasonable prices and hearty portions can make for the perfect recipe for a successful Smith Mountain Lake eatery. Toss in made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls and you’ve got a true winner. Last fall, Danville-based O’Kelly’s Deli & Pastries opened at Westlake Towne Center and quickly has become a popular spot where residents and visitors can enjoy a salad, sandwich, Danish, slice of cheesecake or bag lunch for grab-and-go convenience. Owner Gerald Kelly said he’s had his sights set on the lake region as a spot to open his fifth deli for some time. “We’ve always liked Smith Mountain Lake because of the beauty of the area,” said Kelly. “We felt like we could put a shop there and it would be something different for the community.” Kelly said, in addition to items prepared on site daily, the deli sells treats made at the company’s 7,000 square-foot distribution center in Danville. “Our cooks cook at night and we have trucks that deliver the freshly made items to all our stores [the following day],” he said. “We operate 24 hours a day, six days a week at our distribution center.” Since opening at Westlake, Kelly has added two additional locations and now operates in Danville, Lynchburg, Blairs and Chatham, as well as Roxboro, N.C.

“In 1982, my father, Robert Kelly, began to make and sell cinnamon rolls and other family recipes out of his home,” Kelly said. “About five years ago, I finished up my MBA and wanted to open a business. We started selling those family [specialties] out of an 800-squarefoot space in Danville, and it just exploded.” The Kellys hired family members and other employees to help keep up with demand before tackling expansion. “The Smith Mountain Lake community loves the shop, and we’re very happy with it. We’re told it’s feast or famine in this area depending on the season, but we’ve been somewhat busier than we would be during the winter,” said Kelly. 86 January • February 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
All O’Kelly’s locations take interior decorating inspiration from the deli’s Irish name and feature bold green walls and pub-inspired accents. However, Kelly said the SML location includes touches that make it distinct. “We felt like we needed to go with a slightly different design inside the building to make it a little more elegant,” he said. “We put an awning over the register and we have local artwork on display from a nearby art gallery.” Store manager Tim Robinson is one of nine employees at the Westlake location. He said O’Kelly’s has attracted quite a few regular customers and is especially popular with those who work in and around the shopping center. “A tremendous number of Westlake Kroger folks are our regular guests; even the chefs come over,” said Robinson. “There are many others who come in at least once every day or every other day.” Tanner Walker, a cashier at the Westlake Kroger, frequents the deli for lunch.

“The Smith Mountain Lake community loves the shop, and we’re very happy with it. ” – Gerald Kelly, O’Kelly’s Owner
“I like the quiet atmosphere, and everyone who works there is very friendly. The prices are reasonable, too,” said Walker. “My favorite lunch item is the No. 2 baked chicken meal. It is so good.” Kelly said his personal favorite also is the baked chicken, but the real mainstay of the company is the chicken salad, which makes up 75 percent of sales. Sandwiches such as ham, turkey and pork barbecue cost less than $4. Premium salads and sandwiches, including the O’Flanagan Roast Beef, are priced between $4 and $6. O’Kelly’s also offers catering services and sells specialty breads, homemade items such as chicken salad and barbecue (by the pound) and cinnamon rolls – or cinnamon Danishes, as Kelly refers to them – by the platter full. “We are so thankful for the community support and credit the Lord for our business,” said Kelly. “Our principle from day one has been that our success is from being blessed.”

on Fink mulled the idea of writing a novel for more than two decades. When the storyline started to occupy his thoughts so much that he began dreaming about sections of the book at night, the Smith Mountain Lake resident and retired editor of Aviation Week magazine decided it was time to put fingers to keyboard. Fink said he joined the Smith Mountain Lake Writer’s Group and read several books and guides to writing novels before tackling his first book, “Escape to the Sky,” published in 2012. “I was amazed to note how easy it became to write [the characters’] dialogue sections, how at times I felt I was a witness to their interactions, and writing down what I heard them saying to each other,” Fink said. Set in the 1930s, “Escape to the Sky” is a semiautobiographical tale of Ben Findlay, a Michigan farm boy who cultivates an interest in aviation as

The Rosie Project By Graeme Simsion “The Rosie Project” is light, engaging and, at moments, laugh-out-loud funny. Don is a socially challenged character who decides it’s time to find a wife. He designs a “wife project” with a 16-page questionnaire and sets out to find his perfect partner. Along the way, Don meets Rosie, who does not meet his criteria, but together they develop a quirky, charming, unconventional relationship. This book is funny and touching, and I found it hard to put down. — Frances Pratt, Moneta

Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives Edited by Sarah Weinman This collection of 14 stories with roots in crime noir of the 1940s and ‘50s alternatively frightens and delights with unexpected plot twists. Some characters are so despicable that the reader wants them to go away. Others play vigilante to dispatch evil. All are written in the grand language of the mid-20th century, with crisp sentences, unexpected description and taut dialogue. Well worth reading with the lights on, especially “The Stranger in the Car” and “Mortmain.” — Betsy Ashton, Moneta

Pickup & Removal LeafLeaf Pickup & Removal a way to escape a less-than-perfect home life. Just before his 18th birthday, Ben leaves home to begin a series of adventures flying combat missions in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. “So, the novel is a character-development story with emphasis on flying and aerial combat experience. But, one does not have to be a pilot or aviation enthusiast to enjoy the book,” said Fink, who’s working on a follow-up. “I still dream sections of the sequel I’m currently writing and have to get to the computer quickly to write it down before I forget it.” Published by Xlibris, “Escape to the Sky” is available through the public library systems in Bedford and Franklin counties. To Kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee I remember reading and enjoying this book back in high school. So, last fall, when my son’s 8th-grade English teacher assigned “TKAM,” I decided to read the novel again to see if I liked it more as an adult (but primarily so I could keep tabs on my son’s homework). The book is a coming-of-age story narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl living in a small Alabama town in the 1930s. The themes of racisim, social inequality and justice are explored as Tom Robinson, a man wrongly accused of rape and defended by Scout’s attorney father, Atticus, stands trial. English teachers continue to assign this book for a reason — it’s a classic that deserves to be read, no matter what your age. — Andie Gibson, Editor
