TWENTY FEET OF MULTI-SPORT FUN. The Sport Nautique 200 was built starting with the exclusive Optimal Surface Control (OSC) hull. It’s the same hull technology we use on our Ski Nautique 200, allowing this Sport Nautique to ski like a tournament boat and also have a nice rampy wake for wakeboarding and a long open face wave for wakesurfing. We also gave it a V-drive engine, a new walk-thru rear deck design and wrap-around seating to maximize space and comfort.

Since its beginning in 1977, Webster Marine has been a family owned and operated, full-service marine center on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, VA. Boasting the largest inventory of deck boats, pontoons, and Sea-Doos in Southwest Virginia, Webster Marine offers new and pre-owned boat and Sea-Doo sales, as well as service, parts, accessories and slip rentals. Conveniently located next to Halesford Bridge, stop by and visit us today.

BOAT SHOW

PREVIEW

The weather may be cold, but the deals are hot at the annual Southwest Virginia Boat & RV Show While peak boating time in Virginia may be a few months away, the season gets its unofficial kickoff this weekend at the Southwest Virginia Boat & RV Show at the Roanoke Civic Center. And if you’re in the market for a new boat, organizers say there’s no better time to take the plunge. “I try to express to people that it’s the absolute best time of the year to buy,” said Darrel Ross, the show’s promoter. “Manufacturers offer special promotions. Plus, banks and finance companies will offer special rates in the preseason.” Boat manufacturers offer the incentives so they can secure early buyer commitments and build the boats before the main boating season, Ross explained. “The manufacturers want to be building now because they can’t build them fast enough during the season,” he said. “Buy a boat in February – even if it’s a custom boat – and you’ll get a good price.” Lee Arnold, who owns Smith Mountain Yacht Club in Moneta, said: “Most of my manufacturers will truly be offering money out of their pocket, not ours. When the end of February comes around, those deals end and we’re no longer able to pass along the savings to buyers.”

Customer Convenience Saving time is another great reason to attend the boat show, Ross said. “You don’t have to spend a whole weekend driving around to different boat dealers. If you come out to the show, all eight dealers are here in one location, and they’re all inside. You’re not standing outside worrying

2011 SW VIRGINIA 6

BOAT & RV SHOW

about the weather. And a lot of times, the boats are covered up if you go to a dealer in the winter time.” While some boats and personal watercraft will be on display outside, the majority of the show will take place inside the civic center’s 46,000-squarefoot Special Events Center where inclement weather won’t hamper the event. “It gives everyone an opportunity to get on the boats, walk on them, see them,” said Kimbra Swett, who has owned Ace Marine in Stuarts Draft with husband Dave since 1994. “[Potential buyers] can also get oneon-one time with salespeople and ask any questions they may have.”

Elevated Expectations Dealers are hopeful that recent improvements in the economy will equate to a more fruitful boat show this year. “Last year we had a good show that led to a good season in 2010, better than the two years prior,” said Mark Mills, sales manager for Webster Marine Center, which has been in business at Smith Mountain Lake since 1977. “I’m optimistically looking forward to the boat show this year. I hope that trend continues.” The Yacht Club’s Arnold said he considers the show an economic indicator for the Smith Mountain Lake business community as a whole. “If they’re starting to spend on boats, they’re spending on everything else,” he said. “If we’re increasing, everyone else should see a bump, too.” Mount Joy RV Sales & Service in Buchanan will be back for a second year with six to eight vehicles on display in the civic center parking lot. Co-owner Robert Bankert said that because the Roanoke Valley doesn’t have a dedicated RV show, it’s a great opportunity to showcase his products. “We got some sales out of it [last year],” Bankert said. “We wouldn’t be back if we didn’t. We didn’t sell anything that weekend, but definitely got some good leads that turned into sales.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

In an effort to spread out attendance, the admission price will be waved on Friday, typically the show’s slowest day. On Saturday and Sunday, the admission price remains at $7.50 for adults, free for children 12 and under.

Education Opportunity Once again, the Southwest Virginia Boat Dealers Association will rent out a portion of the civic center’s Special Events Center on Saturday, Feb. 26, for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ Boat Virginia course. The free course, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., fulfills the state’s education requirements for boaters. Subjects include choosing the right boat, boat hulls, motors, legal requirements, navigation rules, cruising, docking, anchoring, knots, accidents, alcohol safety, fire on board, weather, trailering, navigation, water sports and personal watercraft. Participants receive free admission to the boat show. For registration information or to find additional class dates, log on to dgif.virginia.gov and click on Boating.

But Wait, There’s More… In addition to the boat and RV dealers, the show also includes representatives from companies that sell complementary products and services such as insurance and boating supplies.

BOAT-BUYING

BASICS

Learn how to go from shopper to boater in five easy steps Like any major purchase, buying a boat can be a fun and exciting process. It can also be overwhelming. What type of boat do I really need? What can I afford? Are there financing options? When should I buy to get the best deal? A boat can be a rewarding investment, but it can often be a sizable one, and one that you will have for a while. So you want to make the right choice. But while buying a boat may seem intimidating, it doesn’t have to be. By following a few basic steps, buying a boat can be amazingly smooth sailing.

1

IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS

Without a doubt this is the most important step in the boat-shopping process. Of course, no one boat does it all, so you may need to compromise. Still, chances are you’ll be able to find a boat that does a pretty good job of meeting your needs. And don’t forget to consider how those needs might change in the years ahead (for example, as your family expands). One thing some boaters forget to consider is the towing capability of their current vehicle. If your vehicle won’t tow the boat you select, you’ll need to either get a new tow vehicle or scale down the size of the boat you wish to buy.

BOAT & RV SHOW

2

DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET While money might not be an object for a few boaters,

it is a major consideration for the average shopper. When working up your budget, don’t focus solely on the price of the boat, motor and trailer. You’ll also need to consider the cost of additional gear, such as electronics and water toys. Additional long-term costs include insurance, maintenance and repairs. The good news is that today’s boats are more mechanically reliable than ever. But they are pieces of machinery and they are used in a sometimes unforgiving environment. So you need to understand that, just like with your car, you could get hit with a pricy repair bill down the line. Also, unless you’ll be keeping your boat at home, you’ll need to factor in a storage or marina fee.

3

DO YOUR RESEARCH

For many, shopping is the fun part of the process, offering a chance to “kick a lot tires” while trying to find the boat that best suits your needs and budget. All major boat manufacturers offer Internet sites that can help in the research process. Some even have special features that enable you to “build your own boat” on the site. Most dealers also have Web sites with details on their specific model lines and even lists of inventory. Taking trips to those dealers is a good way to see boats up close, but boat shows are ideal because you have an opportunity to see so many boats in one place.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

Once you find your boat, it’s time to make it yours. If you are planning to buy at a boat show, don’t expect to spend a lot of time trying to haggle on a price. Because of the sheer volume of shopper traffic at shows, dealers can’t afford to spend a lot of time wheeling and dealing so they typically list boats at the best price they can offer. What you see is what you get, and that’s usually going to be about the best you could get no matter when you buy the boat. Once you select a boat, most dealers will expect a relatively small good faith deposit, which offers them some protection for taking the boat out of their inventory and putting it off limits to other shoppers. Some buyers will pay for the entire cost of their new boat up front and will be done with it. Most will make a down payment and finance the balance. Many financing options are available. Loans can be arranged through the dealer, through your personal bank, or through another financial institution. Some lenders will offer special boat-show financing deals so carefully shopping around can save you a good bit of money. Terms of boat loans can stretch to 10 years and beyond, depending on the price of the boat. The shorter the term, the less you’ll end up paying in interest over the life of the loan. Dealers want you to be happy with your purchase so most will not finalize the deal until after you’ve taken delivery of your new boat and had a chance to try it out on the water. Should you decide at that point that the boat isn’t right for you after all, dealers will typically allow you to choose another boat from their inventory.

5

GET OUT ON THE WATER

Once you’ve taken delivery of your new boat, it’s time to have fun. But there are still a few things to think about. If you are new to boating, be sure to take a boating education course, which is an excellent primer not only on boating safety rules but also on basic boating techniques and etiquette. (For more information and a list of upcoming classes, see Page 18.) On early trips, invite along a friend or two who has some onwater experience. Their help and assistance will be invaluable. For the first boating trips, try to go on days when crowds on the water and the boat ramp will be light. If you are just learning how to back up with a trailer, you don’t want to learn while a bunch of people eager to launch their own boats are behind you in line. Also, you don’t want to learn the basics of boat handling in heavy boat traffic on the water. There’s no need to rush into things: You have many years of fun on the water ahead of you.

WHY BUY L O C AL ? With almost every boat dealer displaying their inventory on Internet sites, browsing for boats takes only a few keyboard clicks. But even if your browsing turns up a rock-bottom price on the boat of your dreams at a distant dealer, give careful consideration before driving a long distance to pick up a boat. Buying local offers a couple of distinct advantages, including access to better and quicker service. Furthermore, what may seem like a great price at a faraway dealer might not be such a great price when you factor in the details, such as the cost of getting there. When you buy a boat from a dealer at home, you immediately establish a relationship with the dealer. That can prove important when it comes time to service your boat. As professional business people, dealers certainly won’t turn away customers who need service, no matter where those customers bought their boat. However, many dealers offer priority service to customers with whom a relationship is already established. Who doesn’t want to get a free pass to the front of the line? An established relationship will also come in handy if and when you decide to trade in your boat for a new model. As for the price, don’t forget to factor in the price of the gas you’ll burn and time you’ll spend traveling to pick up the boat. You don’t need a financial expert to tell you that driving to Atlanta to save $200 on a boat, for example, is a losing proposition. Also, when comparing prices, make sure you are looking at comparable products. Differences in trailers and boat extras can significantly move a price up or down. A boat that’s $2,000 less in Nashville may have $2,000 less in equipment than the “same boat in Moneta. Often, the bottom line is that if you look closely, you’ll find that prices at your local dealer are comparable and competitive.

In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation requiring that most recreational boaters meet boater education certification requirements by a certain date, depending on the boater’s age. There are some exemptions, including boaters who have already passed an approved test or completed a certified course. In addition, individuals who rent boats for a short period won’t be required to meet the mandatory boater education requirements. However, all rental businesses are required by law to review a detailed boating safety checklist will all customers. Also exempt from the rule would be boaters under the direct supervision of a certified operator. For example, a man who has completed the course would be able to turn the controls over to his non-certified wife. For a detailed Q&A on the new law, see: www.dgif.virginia. gov/boating/education/faq.asp
