back by popular demand – Discovery Channel’s “Auction Kings” appraiser Dr. Lori, more than 85 exhibitors and Lowe’s children’s Build and Grow projects. New this year will be an American Red Cross blood drive. The exhibitors of home-related products and services cater to consumers planning to build, remodel or enhance their homes or outdoor living spaces. This offers homeowners a chance to meet with

professionals, talk about their needs, watch demonstrations, and in some cases, take advantage of show-only discounts. Christine Wade of Reico Kitchen and Bath, chairperson of the home show committee, said the decision to bring back Dr. Lori as a guest presenter was based on her popularity at the 2012 show. “She was a hit last year,� Wade said. “We had a great turnout, and everybody loved her. She puts on a great show. And even if you are not having anything appraised, she’s fun to watch.� The American Red Cross Bloodmobile is in line with the RRHBA’s commitment to give back to the community, said Wade. It will be parked and operational Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. “We are trying to get more people who are interested in the show to contribute to the community,� said Wade. As for the range of exhibitors, Wade pointed out there will be products and services for the home, garden and life. “We are expecting about 2,500 attendees,� she said. “This is an opportunity for people to learn the most current design trends, save money, take advantage of discounts, demonstrations and giveaways, and learn and see everything they need, all in one space.� As a representative of Reico Kitchen and Bath, Wade said she appreciates the opportunity to meet people, give

and get business cards, and help attendees make conďŹ dent decisions. Steve Guttenberg of LeafFilter North of North Carolina, a guttering company, said he’s been an exhibitor at the RRHBA’s spring and fall home shows for years. “It helps with contacts,â€? he said, also noting that the Salem Civic Center venue is ideal – from the employees who run the building to the people of the RRHBA. “Everybody loves everybody and takes care of everybody,â€? he said. “I get lots of business there, meet lots of people, and I can’t imagine anyone nicer than Carolyn [MacLeod, show staff liaison]. We will be there as long as I’m alive.â€? Teresa Lilly of Budget Blinds of

Roanoke had a similar positive reaction to the Home Show. She said, it’s important to advertise but also important to “put a face� on the ad during the show to encourage business. Budget Blinds participated in the spring show and last year’s fall show, Lilly said, and “we’re sold on them. I know that we get people at different stages when they come to these things,� referring to the progress of homeowner projects. Meeting vendors, collecting business cards and putting vendors “in the back of their minds� helps, she said, noting that prospects are more likely to do business with people they have met in person. “We make appointments during the show, and we give those people an extra five-percent discount,” she said. “We want to thank them.” Bo Bohon of Bohon Construction Company, Inc. said he’s been a member of the RRHBA for about 30 years, and became a show vendor because of the exposure his company receives. “Customers see you out there and it helps to reconnect to them,” he said. “When you’ve been in business as long as I have, you start getting repeat customers.” He said last year he ran into a gentleman whose home he built in Forest about 16 years ago, and subsequently did an addition for him in Huddleston. He also saw another couple last year that he had previously done work for, and

I enjoy the Home Show anyway, and quite honestly I have a good time,” said Bohon. He said a woman approached him at the show a few years ago and asked if Bohon remembered her. He didn’t, until she reminded him of the house on Bent Mountain he had built for her 22 years earlier. “Then it connected, and we talked for a good bit,” he said. “She looked at my booth, saw that I do additions, and said she’d give me a call.” The RRHBA is a non-profit professional trade association made up of more than 300 member firms. f you missed Dr. Lori when she visited the Roanoke Valley last year to offer expert appraisals with a dash of humor, you have a second chance. The celebrity appraiser who appears on the Discovery Channel’s “Auction Kings” will return for four sessions at the 2013 Fall Home Show, sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association (RRHBA), Sept. 28-29 at the Salem Civic Center. The presentations are sponsored by ProTect Painters of the Roanoke Valley. Dr. Lori said she appraises more than 20,000 objects and presents at approximately 150 shows

worldwide each year. In 2012, she was a big hit with attendees of the FALL Home Show, drawing about 500 people, according to show liaison Carolyn MacLeod of the RRHBA. “We’re expecting quite a few more people to turn out this year,” MacLeod said, noting that Dr. Lori kept the audience engaged, and “people were blown out of the water by her responses.” Dr. Lori offers one free appraisal per person at the presentations. She’ll stay after to do more for a small fee. “She can appraise anything – from furniture to fishing hooks,” said

MacLeod. “She is brilliant and funny and entertaining.” Amy Curtis of Daleville brought an old medical kit to last year’s show for appraisal by Dr. Lori, who identified it as a surgical kit from the late 1800s. Curtis said Dr. Lori even pointed out some dried blood on one of the instruments. “It was a neat experience just to watch her look at everybody’s stuff,” said Curtis, noting that her kit was worth more than she and her husband had thought and that they plan to return to this year’s show as spectators. Brian Horsley of Salem had a fivegallon wine jug appraised last year. “Dr. Lori told us it came from around Indiana in the late 1800s. It was a bit older than I thought,” said Horsley, who remembers it had a special place in his grandmother’s house, and now in his. It has a bit of cobalt blue on its stoneware surface, which makes it more valuable, plus it is in great shape, he said. “It was something I grew up seeing and fell in love with when I was a kid,” he said. When Horsley’s family held an estate sale of his grandmother’s belongings, the jug was the one

thing he wanted. While he was hoping it might be valued between $200 and $300, he had no idea that it is actually worth between $5,000 and $8,000. Dr. Lori kidded him about the item, saying it was probably worth more than his pickup truck. “I sure enjoyed Dr. Lori. She made it very interesting, and asked me what I knew, which was very little. She gave each person time, whether they had something of value or not. I would definitely do it again,” said Horsley. Rick Gumpert of Troutville brought in a photo of Tad Lincoln, the son of President Abraham Lincoln, sitting next to Gumpert’s great-great grandfather who had served as the boy’s babysitter. He said Dr. Lori

commented that the photograph would have been more valuable if it had been of Lincoln himself, and that there wasn’t a lot of demand for photos of the son. “She valued it at about $7,000,” said Gumpert. “I thought that it would be extremely rare, and she was great about it, but told me the honest truth.” Gumpert stayed after the presentation to have a second item appraised – an acrylic painting by Harriet French Turner, who has been recognized as a Blue Ridge folk artist by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Williamsburg. Turner, explained Gumpert, was his daughter’s great grandmother and known mostly for her landscapes (although this painting featured a man sitting at a table writing). “I took this in to see what she thought of it,” said Gumpert. “She put a $5,000 appraisal on it. It was a trip, and she puts a comical twist to things.” MacLeod pointed out that Dr. Lori is quite accomplished, an accredited appraiser who has earned multiple degrees and sits on the boards of numerous museums. “But she also has a tremendous personality and is a great people person. We wanted to bring her back because she creates a following of sorts. She gives something of value to her audience,” MacLeod said.

Meet Our Members: Bob Fetzer

O

ver the years, BOB FETZER has definitely left his mark on the Roanoke Valley. Fetzer established Building Specialists, Inc., his design-build general contracting firm, in 1976. In the early years, the company specialized in renovations to existing homes. As the firm grew, it expanded into ground-up construction, restoration work, and commercial construction. Fetzer said one of his most exciting undertakings came in 2004 when he served as lead contractor in an episode of the reality TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The show centered around building a new home for Blacksburg resident Carol Crawford Smith, who has multiple sclerosis and could not manage the steps in her older home. “To date, the show has never filmed in such severe weather conditions,” Fetzer said. “It is a miracle we pulled it off. We recruited over 4,000 volunteers, many of them RRHBA members, to build a home and studio in just five days during sub-freezing conditions.” Well known in both the industry and the community, Fetzer has served as the chairman of the executive board of Downtown Roanoke, Inc., sat on the board of Total Action Against Poverty, was a member of both Remodelors Council and Commercial Builders Council, and is a founding member of Artspace, Roanoke Valley Greenways and Pathfinders for Greenways. Fetzer said he’s proud of his long-standing membership in the RRHBA and his time serving as president of the organization. “I think having the privilege of serving as president of the RRHBA has helped me become a leader in the other community organizations I participate in,” said Fetzer. “RRHBA is a tremendous organization and a great asset to my company. The professional and collegial aspect, I feel, has been a great investment. The educational programs are also wonderful. “The organization has been a real advocate for our entire industry and works to keep the public image of our industry high. I see a better community being built through the leadership I learned with RRHBA. I feel I am not just creating great buildings, but am also helping create a great community.”

ARGARET SUE TURNER WRIGHT lends her extensive creative skills to the RRHBA, of which she and husband Barry Wright have been members for 13 years. They also own B. Wright Marketing, an advertising agency and book publisher. When she’s not consulting with RRHBA or the agency, Wright is painting, writing, teaching meditation and curating an exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Transportation dedicated to her father’s auto-racing legacy. Her famous father, Curtis Turner, was one of the founders of NASCAR, built the Charlotte Motor Speedway, raced and won at Pikes Peak, and even tried his hand at the Indianapolis 500, said Turner Wright, “but he blew his engine on the time trial. That’s the way he lived, too.” His daughter clearly inherited that vivacity for life. Turner Wright said her eye for beauty drew her to the RRHBA, which she said is “so helpful to the community and brings about so many jobs. It brings about inspiration for people who are inspired to own or build a home.” Networking opportunities through the RRHBA have helped build the couple’s business, she said. “They [RRHBA members] have such an integral awareness of each other, and naturally refer each other. Word of mouth brings about a great deal of confidence to the consumer,” she said. Margaret Sue Turner Wright attributes her high level of stamina to the meditation classes she leads with her husband, who also works with the advertising and marketing efforts of the RRHBA. “Meditation is a way to calm and organize your inner forces,” she explained. “It can be very inspiring on a mental and emotional level, and has been known to increase health and stamina. I find it refreshing, calming, soothing and inspirational.”

Meet Our Members: Matt Prescott

M

ATT PRESCOTT has many accomplishments of which to be proud. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in fine arts from SUNY Purchase. He has owned his own business, Prescott Construction Company, since 1995, and has been a member of the RRHBA since 1996. But Prescott said the accomplishment he’s most proud of is raising his two sons – Sam, 21, and Brad, 16 – with his wife, Catherine, to whom he’s been married nearly 25 years. After his two boys, Prescott said he’s proudest of establishing his business and having it grow and prosper. His firm offers residential and commercial construction services. In residential, Prescott’s team builds custom homes and additions. On the commercial side, Prescott has renovated numerous historic properties in downtown Roanoke, including a series of four buildings on Market Street. He also was instrumental in the rehabilitation of the art deco-period WDBJ radio station into luxury residential loft apartments. Prescott recently built a large custom home in the Ballyhack Golf Community that earned a Gold rating using the National Green Building Standard. The home, he said, is a Tudor style that incorporates stone, brick, stucco and Tudor detailing with numerous timber-frame components. The landscape runs naturally into the links-style golf course with its undulations and rolling hills. Prescott said he has benefitted greatly from being a member of the RRHBA, and is currently chairman of its governmental affairs committee. “I deal with localities, and meet with development and building departments to discuss changes in new codes and regulations with storm water management, erosion, and sediment control,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot out of that, and one of the main benefits is its advocacy of the building industry.” When he’s not building, Prescott can often be found running. He’s run six marathons and plans to participate in the Richmond Marathon later this fall. He’s also qualified for the Boston Marathon next spring.
