For 2014, Fiat offers a longer 500 model ANN M. JOB, For The Associated Press It doesn’t sound like much: An extra 27.7 inches of length, nearly 6 more inches of height, two additional doors and four more panels of window glass on a small car badged “Fiat 500L”. But the not-quite-14-foot-long, fourdoor, new-for-2014 Fiat 500L is a unique small car ride — odd to some, stylish to others and more spacious inside than just about anyone expects. The interior airy feel — some might liken it to riding in a bubble — is especially noticeable when the interior is splashed with outside light from a roof-size, optional, power sunroof. Also noteworthy: The 500L’s high seat positions and big door openings that make for easy entry and exit. These can make the 500L comfortable for someone suffering back pain and who winces at the thought of getting in and out of a regular car. Best of all, this largest version of a car badged as a Fiat 500 to come to America is affordably priced. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $19,900 for a base, frontwheel drive, 2014 500L Pop model with 160-horsepower, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and traditionaloperating, six-speed manual transmission. This base model includes air conditioning as well as cruise control, remote keyless entry, heated outside mirrors, power windows, power door locks and seven air bags. The lowest starting retail price for a 500L with a six-speed, Euro-twin clutch that a driver can operate like an automatic transmission is $22,345 because buyers must move up to a 500L Easy model. A conventional six-speed automatic is planned to be available on the 500L during the 2014 model year. Its pricing is not yet released. In comparison, a base, 2013 Fiat 500 — without the additional space of the L and with just two side doors — is $16,900 with 101-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. Competitors to the 500L include other small, tall, five-door hatchbacks. For example, the front-wheel drive, 2014 Kia Soul has a starting retail price of $15,495 for a base model with 130-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual.

The base, front-wheel drive, 2014 Mini Cooper Countryman with a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $22,895 has a 121-horsepower, fourcylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission. While the 500L carries the 500 name, it uses a different “small-wide” architecture than the smaller Fiat 500, so it’s not exactly a blimped-up 500. Another distinction: The 500L is built in Serbia, not the Mexico assembly plant that produces the 500 for U.S. consumers. While the 500L has the face of its smaller namesake, it’s on a larger hood and body and arguably just isn’t as cute and endearing as the smaller Fiat 500. Indeed, pictures of the 500L don’t do it justice. People have to see this car in person to grasp that at 5.5 feet tall, it’s 9.2 inches taller than a Honda Civic sedan, taller than the Countryman and Soul and even a tad taller than a Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle. Inside, the 500L shows both styling innovation, with its “hip,” modern seats, intriguing shapes and sizing for such things as parking brake lever and steering wheel, and amazing roominess. The 23.1 cubic feet of cargo space aft of the back seats is about on par with the Kia Soul’s and more than the Countryman’s. When rear, split seats fold down and out of the way, cargo space in the 500L nearly doubles. Rear-seat legroom can be impressive, too, as both front and rear seats can move forward and back on lengthy tracks and the rear floor is mostly flat. Three passengers can really sit in back and all have adjustable head restraints. Side windows on the four 500L doors are sizable and can come down below shoulder level even when a petite driver sat on the driver’s seat. Additional window panels at the four corners of the car attract attention right away, because they are where thick, metal pillars usually are positioned in cars. These windows greatly enhance

visibility around the 500L and are part of the style statement. One nit: The window glass in the test 500L Lounge had a slight imperfection in the middle that blurred the view. The tester had a full-roof sunroof, with dual glass panes and a fabric shade — all power-operated. Even with the shade in place, the interior was light and bright.When the fabric moved out of the way, there was more headroom for tall passengers. But the glass in this $950 optional sunroof only opened to the outdoors above the front seats. Back seat riders had stationary glass above their heads. The ride is firm, not isolating, and can be noisy, with the engine readily heard. In curves and turns, there’s body lean in the tall 500L. The only engine is the 1.4-liter, single overhead cam, MultiAir turbocharged four cylinder that is also used in the sporty version of 500, the Fiat 500 Abarth. In the 500L, this powerplant delivers peak torque of 184 foot-pounds between 2,500 and 4,000 rpm. The numbers sound good, but the test car often lagged for a bit when the driver demanded acceleration. Then, a burst of speed hit as the turbo kicked in. This was with the six-speed, Eurotwin clutch, that doesn’t require a clutch pedal. Federal government fuel economy ratings are best with the regular, sixspeed manual transmission: 25 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 mpg on highways for a combined 28 mpg. This compares with the 25/30-mpg rating for the Mini Countryman with base engine and the 24/30-mpg rating for a 2014 Kia Soul. What’s New for 2014 The Kia Optima cruises into 2014 with a variety of small changes. On the outside, you’ll find updated front and rear styling. Inside, Kia has improved the front seats for greater comfort and restyled the steering wheel. There are also some new features, including keyless ignition/entry, a blind-spot monitoring system, rear parking sensors and new display screens. Introduction Family sedans have traditionally had a certain bland aesthetic as automakers have calculated that safe and inoffensive styling will appeal to the widest possible market. But a few years ago, Kia (http://www.edmunds. com/kia/) showed how it’s possible to buck that conservative tradition with its stylish Optima. With sheet metal that’s bold enough to be genuinely striking, the 2014 Kia Optima makes an assertive statement, and is an ideal choice for the buyer seeking family transportation that stands apart from the pack. Of course, there’s more to the Optima than its attractive fascia. The Optima’s modern cabin is pretty comfortable and can be fitted with rather impressive features such as ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a voice-command system. Kia has upped the Optima’s safety features this year as well, and that goes along nicely with the car’s impressive safety scores. When you add in the Optima’s very generous warranty, it becomes clear that this Kia represents a compelling value proposition. Still, the Optima might not be the best choice for some buyers. If you’re looking for the family sedan with the roomiest cabin, the Kia Optima falls short of choices such as the 2014 Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat. Nor does the Optima have the lock on style and substance these days, as the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata (the Optima’s mechanical twin), 2014 Mazda 6 and 2014 Nissan Altima are all very impressive from just about every facet. Nonetheless, the Optima’s many strengths make it a solid pick, particularly if you’re looking for family transportation that blends value with va-va-voom. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Kia Optima is a midsize sedan that comes in LX, EX, SX (normally aspirated and turbocharged variants) and Limited trim levels. The LX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights, full power accessories, cruise control, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker sound

system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The LX’s optional Convenience Plus package adds an eight-way power driver seat (with power lumbar adjustment), laminated (i.e., quieter) front door windows, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, Bluetooth audio connectivity and Kia’s Uvo voice command telematics system. With the EX, the upgraded windows, power driver seat and auto-dimming mirror come standard. You also get 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition/ entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning vents and leather upholstery. Opting for the EX’s Premium package further equips the EX with a panoramic sunroof, the rearview camera, Uvo, a fourway power passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, driver memory settings and an eightspeaker Infinity sound system with HD radio. To this you can add the Technology package, which adds rear parking sensors, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, an 8-inch touchscreen display and a navigation system. The Optima’s SX trim level is equipped similarly to the EX, but also has 18-inch alloy wheels, a sporttuned suspension, LED taillights, upgraded gauges with an integrated display screen and steering-wheelmounted paddle shifters. The SX with the turbocharged engine also comes with xenon headlights. For the nonturbo SX, a Premium Technology package bundles the contents of the EX’s Premium and Technology packages. For the turbocharged SX, the Premium and Technology packages are again separate. If all of this just seems too confusing, you can just pick the top-of-the-line Limited, as it loads up at the buffet line with the complete contents of the EX’s optional packages as standard. You also get 18-inch wheels, the xenon headlights, unique interior and exterior trim, LED foglights, an electronic parking brake and premium leather upholstery. Powertrains and Performance Every 2014 Kia Optima is frontwheel drive. The LX, EX and SX come standard with a 2.4-liter four-

cylinder engine that produces 192 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 274 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque is optional on the SX and standard on the Limited. All models come with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy with the 2.4 liter is an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined (23 city/34 highway). EPA-estimated fuel economy with the turbocharged engine is 24 mpg combined (20 city/31 highway). In Edmunds performance testing, a loaded Optima EX went from zero to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, which is an average time for the class. An SX with the turbocharged engine went from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is also an average time for a family sedan with an upgraded four-cylinder or V6 engine. Safety Standard safety features on the 2014 Kia Optima include four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, side airbags and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is optional, as are rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert and a blind-spot monitoring system. The optional Uvo telematics system includes roadside assistance and collision notification. In Edmunds brake testing, an Optima EX came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, a distance that’s a couple of feet shorter than the segment average. The turbocharged SX made this stop in 125 feet, still acceptable for this class. In government crash tests, the Optima earned a top five-star rating for overall safety performance, with five stars awarded for overall frontaland side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Optima a top score of “Good” in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset, sideimpact and roof strength tests. The Optima earned an “Acceptable” rating (second highest) in the small-overlap frontal-offset crash test and a “Good” rating for its head restraints/seat whiplash protection in rear impacts. Interior Design and Special Features First impressions of the 2014 Kia Optima’s interior are usually favorable. There’s a distinct European and modern look to the design, and overall interior quality is helped by

an abundance of soft-touch materials. These impressions are further bolstered in the Limited trim level by the high level of standard equipment and premium leather upholstery. Kia’s Uvo (pronounced “yoo-voh”) electronics interface system is similar to Ford’s Sync system (both are powered by Microsoft). Uvo provides voice control of cell phones and MP3 players as well as other services, such as POIs and turn-by-turn navigation. In our testing of Uvo, we’ve found that it works quite well. The touchscreen interface in navigation-equipped Optimas is easy to use for navigation purposes and operating the stereo. The Optima has a fairly spacious cabin, with comfortable seats and a useful amount of legroom front and rear. Headroom (particularly in back) is a bit tight due to the car’s rakish, coupelike roof line. Taller consumers should definitely think twice about getting the optional panoramic sunroof, as it further decreases headroom. The Optima’s 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space is about average for its class.

Driving Impressions The 2014 Kia Optima rides comfortably without isolating you from the environment, although the car’s numb steering (with its artificially high effort) is less praise-worthy. The overall driving experience is certainly pleasant and better than average for the segment. SX and Limited models come with a sport suspension that contributes to slightly sportier handling, though some may find ride quality in these models a little too firm. The high horsepower ratings on both engines are tempered somewhat by the fact that we’ve measured only average acceleration times. We’ve also found that the turbocharged engine is particularly sensitive to hot weather, and acceleration is noticeably slower in such conditions. But in general driving, the Optima feels suitably powered, and the transmission is responsive and shifts smoothly.

What’s New for 2014 For 2014, the Audi A6 adds a fuelefficient diesel V6 engine to its already excellent lineup of engines. The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder is a bit more powerful this year as well. Finally, the 3.0T trim now starts at the Premium Plus trim level (the new TDI trim starts at this level as well). Introduction For many years, the midsize luxury sedan kingdom has been ruled by a model made by a certain Bavarian automaker known for crafting ultimate driving machines. But no monarch reigns forever, and with its successful redesign a couple of years ago, the Audi A6 made it clear major shifts in the power structure were afoot. Undeniably gorgeous and arguably more enjoyable to drive than any other model in its class, the 2014 Audi A6 has what it takes to upset the hierarchy and claim the crown. The A6’s long list of assets begins with its finely crafted interior. Sumptuous in its luxury, this is one cabin that is a joy both to experience and behold. The A6 will also woo you with ample technology features such as optional in-car WiFi, a head-up display and night vision with pedestrian detection. And when it comes time to actually drive, this year’s A6 boasts three appealing engine choices -- a frugal four-cylinder, a potent V6 and a newfor-2014 torque-rich 3.0-liter diesel V6 -- plus handling capabilities that are among the best in the segment. Of course, there’s no shortage of qualified candidates in the midsize luxury sedan class. The BMW 5 Series has long ruled the roost, but it’s no longer the automatic pick in this class, though it’s still a very good luxury sedan and you’ll definitely want to test-drive it. The Lexus GS 350 F Sport is another solid choice, especially if you want a sedan with some athleticism. If your tastes lean more toward the luxury side of the spectrum, you’ll want to sample the opulent Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Cadillac’s redesigned 2014 CTS is another candidate to consider. All these midsize luxury sedans have something special to offer. But if you’re looking for a peerless combination of luxury, technology and fuel economy, along with an engaging driving experience, the outstanding 2014 Audi A6 is our top recommendation. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Audi A6 is a midsize luxury sedan available in six trim levels -2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Prestige, TDI Premium Plus and TDI Prestige. The numbers and letters denote the engine fitted (a 2.0-liter turbocharged four, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel). Standard equipment for the 2.0T Premium

The 2.0T Premium Plus adds 18-inch wheels, xenon headlights, LED running lights, front and rear parking sensors, auto-dimming outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, a voiceactivated navigation system, a rearview camera, HD radio, an enhanced MMI controller, Bluetooth audio connectivity and Audi Connect (enhanced Webbased navigation, information and WiFi access). The 3.0T Premium Plus is equipped similarly to the 2.0T Premium Plus but adds a fuel-saving stop-start engine system and Audi Pre-Sense Basic, which tightens the seatbelts and closes the sunroof and side windows if it detects a potential collision situation. The 3.0T Prestige adds adaptive headlights, special exterior styling accents, ambient LED cabin lighting, four-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, a blind spot warning system, a rear collision warning system, a power-adjustable steering wheel and a Bose audio system. The TDI Premium Plus is equipped similarly to the 3.0T Premium Plus, while the TDI Prestige has the same equipment as the 3.0T Prestige. The availability of option packages depends on the trim level you select. The list includes the Style package (xenon headlights and 18-inch wheels), the Innovation package (includes headup display and night vision assistant), the Cold Weather package (heated front and rear seats and heated steering wheel), the Sport package (adds a sporttuned suspension, a sport steering wheel, shift paddles and either 19-inch wheels with all-season tires or 20-inch wheels with summer tires), the Driver Assistance package (top-view camera system with front and rear corner views, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and the Audi Pre-Sense Plus collision mitigation system) and the Black Optic package (available with the Sport package, and adds 20-inch wheels, summer tires and high-gloss black trim). Stand-alone options include LED headlights, a premium 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system, a power rear window sunshade (with manual rear door sunshades) and rear side airbags.

Powertrains and Performance The 2014 Audi A6 2.0T is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 good for 220 horsepower and 258 poundfeet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are standard, and all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic is available as an option. Audi claims a 0-60-mph time of 7.4 seconds for CVT models and 6.6 seconds with the eightspeed automatic, which if true is a bit slow relative to others in the segment. You’ll do well at the gas pump, though, as EPA-estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined for the CVT and 20/29/23 mpg for the eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The Audi A6 3.0T gets a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 310 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. An eightspeed automatic, all-wheel drive and stop-start technology are all standard. In Edmunds performance testing, the 3.0T sedan went from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, a quick time among midsize luxury sedans equipped with similarly powerful six-cylinder engines. Fuel economy stands at an estimated 18/27/22, which is quite good. With the A6 TDI, you get a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel-fueled V6 good for 240 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. The eight-speed auto and all-wheel drive are again standard. According to Audi, this engine gets the A6 from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Fuel economy with the TDI is a stellar 24/38/29. If power in excess is your game, there’s also the 420-hp Audi S6, which is reviewed separately. Safety Standard safety equipment on the 2014 Audi A6 includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. Rear side airbags, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning/keeping assist and a blind-spot warning system are either optional or included with the upper trims. The standard Audi Pre-Sense system can warn the driver, tension the seatbelts and close the windows if a potential collision is detected, while the optional Audi Pre-Sense Plus system can do all that, plus fully tighten the seatbelts and automatically apply the brakes full force to mitigate the severity of an imminent crash. The A6’s Prestige trim also comes with Audi Pre-Sense Rear, which uses the brake light to warn traffic behind the vehicle in the event of a rear collision, employing additional preventive protective measures should the situation turn critical. In Edmunds brake testing, an A6 3.0T with the Sport package and summer performance tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 111 feet, an average distance for a car in this

class with summer tires. Expect longer distances on A6s with all-season tires. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the A6 received the highest possible rating of “Good” in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, sideimpact and roof strength tests. Interior Design and Special Features The 2014 Audi A6 offers one of the finest cabins in its class, with an attractive dash layout, excellent materials quality and solid fit and finish. The MMI (Multi Media Interface) controls entertainment, communication and navigation functions via the dash-mounted pop-up screen and a knob and buttons on the center console. The system boasts logical menus, crisp graphics and a touchpad to increase functionality, although we still prefer BMW’s iDrive or Mercedes’ COMAND for overall ease of use. The A6 also offers the option of in-car WiFi, which uses a 3G connection and adds Google Earth data to the navigation system while also providing simplified Google search for POIs. It sounds a bit over the top, but it’s actually quite handy if you need to get some unexpected work done on the road and there’s no Starbucks in sight. The Google Earth nav system is more a matter of form over function, though, and can actually make the map more difficult to comprehend at a glance. All the seats are supportive and comfortable on long trips, while the backseat in particular offers more real-world legroom than most rivals. The A6’s 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is on the small side, though the rear seat folds and features a pass-through when more space is needed.

Driving Impressions The 2014 Audi A6 feels light and changes directions eagerly. There’s plenty of grip, and overall, the A6 provides a satisfying connection between car and driver: not something we can say about every midsize luxury sedan. The A6’s steering can feel overly light at low speeds, but the effort level increases in a reasonably linear fashion when driving through turns at higher speed. The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine provides sharp response off the line and continues to pull with authority throughout the range. The 2.0T doesn’t sound as refined as a six-cylinder, but it’s hard to argue with the excellent fuel economy it returns. The eight-speed automatic is excellent, with quick, imperceptible shifts in normal use and smooth downshifts for when you need quick acceleration. The front-drive 2.0T model’s CVT isn’t bad either, as it responds consistently to gas pedal inputs, something that can’t be said of most CVTs. Although the Audi A6 has a smooth ride, there’s sometimes more harshness over bumps and ruts than we’d like, which is the price to be paid for the A6’s more athletic handling. What’s New for 2014 A more fuel-efficient 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.5-liter fivecylinder on the 2014 Volkswagen Passat SEL model and will gradually be phased in on other trim levels. VW’s Car-Net telematics interface also debuts this year, and most trims now have a standard rearview camera. Introduction One of the more interesting options for a midsize sedan is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat. It’s the only European car in the family sedan segment, and that heritage is evident in its clean styling, tidy, down-to-business interior design and solid, composed highway ride. It’s also one of just two sedans in this class with an optional diesel engine, and that TDI power plant returns fuel economy on par with hybrid sedans. However, there’s plenty of North American influence in VW’s family sedan as well, and indeed the Passat’s greatest attribute is the vast amount of space it offers for passengers and cargo. This spaciousness is no accident, of course, as the Volkswagen Passat is built in Tennessee expressly for the American market. Not only is this midsize VW sufficiently comfortable and serene for long road trips on U.S. highways, but you can even get it with a potent 3.6-liter V6 engine. Most Passat buyers end up with one of the more sensible engine options, of course, and to be honest we’ve never been thrilled with the base 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine’s below-average fuel economy and slightly gruff power delivery. The good news is that Volkswagen is phasing in a new, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine for the 2014 model year. It doesn’t make any more horsepower than the 2.5 engine, but there’s more torque for passing maneuvers and the 1.8T engine returns better gas mileage to boot. Initially, only SEL models will have the new engine as standard, but as the 2014 model year progresses, you can expect to see the 1.8T on all VW Passats. Still, if you’re really serious about fuel economy, the extra cost of the diesel engine on the TDI models will probably be worth it to you. Although there’s much to like about the 2014 Volkswagen Passat, we can say the same about many of its competitors and you’ll certainly want to check a few of them out before making a decision. The Nissan Altima and Honda Accord are two of our favorites in this class: Their base four-cylinder gasoline engines are more fuel-efficient than the Passat’s 1.8T and 2.5 engines, and the Altima has some of the richest cabin furnishings in this price range. We’re also fond of the Mazda 6, which has the sportiest handling of any sedan in this class and an available diesel engine, and the stylish Ford Fusion, whose eco-themed counterpart, the Fusion Hybrid, is a compelling alternative to a diesel Passat. Even in the face of so many competent rivals, though, the 2014 Volkswagen Passat comes highly recommended, especially with the 1.8T and TDI engines. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Volkswagen Passat sedan is offered in four broad models broken down by engine (2.5L, 1.8T, TDI and V6), which are further subdivided into a quartet of different trim levels (S, Wolfsburg, SE and SEL). The lineup starts with the “S” base model, which comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a six-way manual driver seat with lumbar adjustment, a 60/40-splitfolding rear seat, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-

telescoping steering wheel, audio controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, a trip computer, Bluetooth with streaming audio and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input. The Wolfsburg Edition includes the features of the S model and adds unique 16-inch alloy wheels, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a six-way power driver seat, heated front seats, satellite radio, a USB/iPod interface and VW’s Car-Net telematics system. Move up to the SE trim level and you get 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors and windshield washer nozzles, a rearview camera, rear-seat air vents, a sliding front armrest, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, upgraded gauges and displays, and an eight-speaker sound system with a touchscreen audio interface. Options on SE models include a sunroof or the sunroof bundled with a navigation system. On TDI SE models, 18-inch alloy wheels are also added if the sunroof is equipped, and if you equip both the sunroof and the nav system, you get foglights as well. Navigation is not available on V6 SE models, but on the upside, a nine-speaker Fender audio system is included with the optional sunroof. The SEL models include all of the above items, including an upgraded navigation system with a larger screen, hard-drive music storage and traffic updates. You also get keyless ignition/ entry, remote ignition, eight-way power front seats with driver memory functions, partial leather upholstery, wood-grain interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio and a separate ski pass-through for the 60/40 rear seat. Powertrains and Performance The 2014 VW Passat is front-wheel drive and comes with a choice of four distinctly different engines. The S, SE and Wolfsburg models come with a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. You can have a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission on S and SE models, while the Wolfsburg is automatic only. In Edmunds performance testing, an automatic-equipped Passat 2.5 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9 seconds, which is slower than average for the class. The EPA’s estimated fuel economy for manual-shift Passat 2.5 models is 26 mpg combined (22 city/32 highway), while the automatic drops to 25 mpg combined (22 city/31 highway). These figures are below average among midsize sedans. Volkswagen is beginning to phase the 2.5-liter engine out of the lineup in favor of a new 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is also rated at 170 hp but makes a more substantial 184 lb-ft of torque. Currently, the 1.8T is standard only on the SEL model. Eventually, though, it will be the base engine on all Passats, and consumers are likely to encounter both engines in 2014 models at dealerships. A six-speed automatic is standard on the SEL 1.8T, but VW will also offer the

five-speed manual when this engine makes its way to the S and SE models. Fuel economy estimates are 28 mpg combined (24 city/34 highway) with the automatic and 28 combined (24 city/35 highway) with the manual: good numbers for a four-cylinder midsize sedan. Those seeking maximum mpg can opt for Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder diesel engine, which produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque on SE and SEL models. Called the TDI, this diesel engine comes with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automated manual transmission (known as DSG), which takes the place of a conventional automatic. In Edmunds performance testing, the Passat TDI went from zero to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is an excellent 35 mpg combined (31 city/43 highway) for the manual and 34 mpg combined (30 city/40 highway) with the DSG. In extensive Edmunds fuel economy testing, we’ve found that the diesel VW Passat can easily match or surpass these numbers. The strongest engine available on the Passat is a 3.6-liter V6, which churns out 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s optional on the SE and SEL, and the DSG automated manual transmission is standard. In Edmunds testing, a Passat 3.6 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds -- quick for this class. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 combined (20 city/28 highway). Safety Standard safety features for the 2014 Volkswagen Passat include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. In the event of a crash, the onboard computer automatically cuts off the fuel supply, unlocks the doors and turns on the hazard flashers. A rearview camera is standard on SE and SEL models. VW’s new Car-Net telematics system, standard from the Wolfsburg model on up, includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geofencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go. In government crash testing, the Passat scored a perfect five out of five stars overall, with five stars for frontal impact protection and five stars for side crash protection. Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Passat its top score of “Good” for frontal moderate-overlap, side-impact and roofstrength tests. The Passat received the Institute’s second-highest rating of “Acceptable” in the new small-overlap frontal-offset crash test. In Edmunds brake testing, a Passat 3.6 SEL came to a stop from 60 mph in about 130 feet, which is longer than average. However, a 2.5 SE model stopped in a class-average 123 feet, while a TDI SEL needed 124 feet. Interior Design and Special Features Spaciousness is the operative word when describing the Passat’s cabin. Space up front is

good; however, the driver seat only adjusts in six ways (minus lumbar), and it lacks the seatbottom tilt found in most competitors. In back, the Passat verges on full-size sedan dimensions, as even good-sized adults will have room to stretch out their legs. The seatback cushion is too upright, however, which can result in taller occupants’ heads grazing the roof. The spacious trunk can swallow 15.9 cubic feet of cargo -- a number that bests many competitors -- and a large pass-through gives you plenty of room to haul bulkier items when the 60/40 seats are folded. The quality of the VW Passat’s interior materials is among the best in the class. The overall cabin design is decidedly upscale, while the layout of gauges and controls is refreshingly simple. The premium Fender audio system has been tuned to the acoustics of the interior and will please even hard-core audiophiles. Our only significant complaint relates to the optional navigation systems. The SE models have a lower-cost navigation unit with a small touchscreen display. You get a usefully larger screen in the SEL, but we’ve found this higher-end interface slower to process commands whether you’re changing a radio station or entering a destination. Driving Impressions The 2014 Volkswagen Passat’s character depends a great deal on which engine is under the hood. Although performance from the 2.5-liter five-cylinder is fully adequate, we think most buyers will appreciate the new 1.8T engine’s smoother power delivery, increased fuel economy and extra thrust for passing. We haven’t yet performance-tested a Passat

1.8T, but in the real world, it also feels a bit quicker than the TDI models. However, the turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel has lively lowend power and returns truly extraordinary fuel economy and fuel range. For those who care more about power than mpg, the 3.6-liter V6 engine delivers much more enthusiastic acceleration. The DSG automated manual transmission that’s available with the TDI engine and standard with the V6 generally feels like a regular automatic transmission and, in some cases, it’s better -- it provides quick downshifts in highway passing situations. One negative is the lackadaisical throttle response on DSG-equipped Passats and on 2.5 models with the regular automatic transmission: There’s a noticeable delay between the time the pedal is pressed and when the engine actually responds. Most owners get used to this behavior in time, but if it bothers you, the automatic-equipped Passat 1.8T is worth a try, as we observed minimal delay in engine response when accelerating off the line in a preproduction test car. On the highway, all 2014 Volkswagen Passats are impressively quiet and comfortable, snuffing out bumps large and small. Around turns, the steering is reasonably precise, although there’s not much feel for the road and some drivers find it a tad heavy at low speeds. What’s New for 2014 The Hyundai Sonata boasts a bunch of revisions for 2014. These include standard driver-selectable steering effort, a sport-tuned exhaust (SE 2.0T only), available xenon headlights and LED taillights (Limited only), a ventilated driver seat (Limited) an optional blind-spot monitoring system, an improved stability con trol system and two new touchscreens. Other changes this year include refreshed styling, a revised power output for the 2.4-liter engine and various sounddeadening measures for a quieter highway ride. Introduction Time waits for no midsize sedan, not even the sleek, sophisticated 2014 Hyundai Sonata. Still, it’s hard to believe that Hyundai’s game-changing family hauler has already reached midlife. Back when the current-generation Sonata debuted for the 2011 model year, we sized up its revolutionary design and concluded, “Hyundai just might take over the world with this thing.” At first, that’s more or less what happened, but the competition has since awoken from its slumber, and today dealerships are awash in astonishingly good family sedans. So does that mean that the Hyundai Sonata’s over the hill? Should you wait for its next renaissance before committing your cash? No and no. In fact, thanks in part to the numerous nips and tucks on the 2014 Sonata, Hyundai’s midsizer continues to be a leader, whether you’re talking about fuel economy, power, features or value. This is the car that put Hyundai on the map as a legitimate world-class automaker, and it can still hold its own against anything in the segment. Sure, we still wish Hyundai would carve out additional rear-seat headroom, but if you’re looking for glaring faults, that’s about the best we can do on the otherwise competent Sonata. With so many excellent midsize sedans to choose from these days, we encourage you to get out there and drive as many as you can. A couple of our favorites are the 2014 Honda Accord and 2014 Nissan Altima, which are very impressive in all aspects. Other appealing choices include the stylish 2014 Ford Fusion, the Sonata’s mechanical twin the Kia Optima, the sporty 2014 Mazda 6 and the European-influenced Volkswagen Passat. Nonetheless, the Sonata’s many strengths make it a solid pick, even in its fourth year of production. Forget about a midlife crisis; we’re not even sure the 2014 Hyundai Sonata is past its prime. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Hyundai Sonata is available in GLS, SE and Limited trim levels. There’s also a Sonata Hybrid, which is reviewed separately. Standard equipment on the GLS includes 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, full

power accessories, heated mirrors, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, a 60/40-split rear seatback, Hyundai’s BlueLink telematics system, a trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an iPod/USB audio interface and an auxiliary audio jack. The optional GLS Popular Equipment package adds foglights, a driver’s blindspot mirror, automatic headlights, turnsignal repeaters in the outside mirrors, LED interior lighting, leatherette doorpanel inserts, heated front seats, an eightway power driver seat, HD radio and a 4.3-inch touchscreen audio display with a rearview camera. The Sonata SE starts with all of the above and adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, foglights, a dark chrome grille, a rear lip spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, keyless ignition/entry, a color LCD trip computer, simulated carbonfiber interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters and leather/cloth upholstery. Opting for the turbocharged engine (2.0T) for the SE also brings a sport exhaust and dual-zone automatic climate control. The SE Premium package adds a sunroof, a blind-spot warning system, a 10-speaker Dimension audio system and a navigation system with an 8-inch touchscreen. When added to the non-turbo SE, it also includes dual-zone automatic climate control. The plush Sonata Limited starts with most of the SE’s standard and optional features, including the Premium package minus navigation (meaning it uses the lesser 4.3-inch touchscreen). However, the Limited substitutes 17inch alloy wheels and has a softer state of tune for its suspension. It also comes standard with full leather upholstery, a ventilated driver seat, heated rear seats, rear climate vents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and unique interior accents. The turbocharged Limited 2.0T variant adds the SE 2.0T’s 18inch wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips and shift paddles (not available on the regular Limited). The optional Limited Technology package tops things off with a panoramic sunroof, xenon headlights, LED taillights, the 8-inch touchscreen display with navigation and a 12-speaker Infinity sound system. Powertrains and Performance The 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS is equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 190 horsepower and

179 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-exhaust SE with the same engine makes 192 hp and 181 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic that sends the power to the front wheels is the sole transmission. You can expect a 0-60 mph time of about 8 seconds, which is fairly quick for a base-model family sedan. Sonatas with the 2.4-liter engine have an EPAestimated fuel economy rating of 28 mpg combined (24 mpg city/35 mpg highway). A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 274 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque is available on SE and Limited models. The “2.0T” sprints to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is about average for midsize sedans with an engine upgrade. The EPA pegs fuel economy at 26 mpg combined (22 mpg city/34 mpg highway). Safety Standard safety features on every 2014 Hyundai Sonata include antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, front seat side-impact airbags, fulllength side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Also standard is BlueLink, Hyundai’s emergency telematics system, which offers roadside assistance, crash response, remote door lock control and monitoring features for parents with teenage drivers (speed, geo-fencing and curfew limits). A rearview camera is standard on every Sonata except the base level GLS. Blind-spot monitoring is optional for the SE and standard for the Limited. In government testing, the Sonata earned a top five-star rating for overall crash protection, with four out of five stars for total front-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Hyundai Sonata earned a top rating of “Good” for moderateoverlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength protection. In the IIHS’s new small-overlap frontal-offset impact test, the Sonata was deemed just “Marginal” (second-worst), though in fairness, many vehicles have struggled in this relatively new test. In Edmunds brake testing, both a Sonata GLS and an SE turbo came to a stop from 60 mph in about 120 feet, which is a smidge better than average for the class. Interior Design and Special Features The base Sonata GLS displays some obvious cost-cutting inside, utilizing rough plastic panels for a few too many surfaces, but the higher trim levels compare pretty well to segment

rivals. Not surprisingly, the Limited trim, with its available two-tone color schemes and piano-black trim, is particularly appealing. In all Sonatas, the dash and center stack meld together in a seamless flow, while trapezoidal vents and sharp blue backlighting create a modern, upscale environment. On the infotainment front, the new 4.3-inch touchscreen isn’t very big, but it does provide deeper functionality for Sonatas that lack the optional navigation system. The nav system doesn’t come cheap, but its exclusive 8-inch touchscreen and enhanced interface give the Sonata’s cabin even more of a cutting-edge feel. As expected in this segment, the Sonata offers ample legroom for four adults on a long trip, and their luggage should fit fine in the 16.4-cubic-foot trunk. However, headroom both front and rear is merely adequate, in our experience, and 6-footers in back may find their heads rubbing the ceiling due to the Sonata’s dramatically sloped roof line. Driving Impressions When equipped with the base 2.4-liter

engine, the 2014 Hyundai Sonata provides eager acceleration by segment standards. The optional 2.0-liter turbo engine serves up serious lag-free punch on demand and keeps up with competitors’ V6 engines. Either way, the gearchanges from the six-speed automatic transmission are smooth and prompt. The GLS and Limited models stake out an agreeable middle ground between comfort and control. The ride quality is relatively firm, but there’s sufficient compliance over rough pavement. We’re less sold on the Sonata SE, which rides harshly at times due to its sport-tuned suspension and 18inch wheels. For consumers primarily looking for a car to drive to work, this version’s minor handling improvements probably won’t be enough to justify the stiffer ride. Copyright Edmunds.com, Inc. What’s New for 2014 The 2014 Toyota Corolla is fully redesigned. Introduction Without a doubt, the biggest and most significant new Toyota this year is the 2014 Toyota Corolla. Although it was always a strong seller, the previousgeneration Corolla was outclassed by more stylish, more fuel-efficient and better-performing rivals in the compact sedan segment. The upshot is that it has been many years since the Corolla was a no-brainer pick for a small, affordably priced sedan. Slightly longer, lower and wider than last year’s model, the 2014 Corolla has a more aggressive-looking exterior. The exaggerated front-end design will likely polarize consumers (those who care about styling anyway), but at least it’s edgier and more interesting than the forgettable forms of the past. In addition, all 2014 Toyota Corollas come standard with LED low-beam headlights, an unexpected feature in this segment. If you’re expecting an exciting driving experience to accompany this extroverted styling, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Toyota kept the Corolla’s easygoing personality intact. But the new Corolla does offer decent performance, a comfortable ride, good gas mileage, user-friendly features and solid reliability, all things that have made it so popular through the decades. One key improvement this year is fuel economy. Any Corolla you look at will sip less gas than last year thanks to a variety of tweaks and a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), which takes the place of a conventional automatic transmission on some versions. Also, there’s a new fuel economy-themed trim level called the LE Eco. Equipped with a revised version of the standard Corolla’s 1.8-liter engine, the Corolla LE Eco earns best-in-class mpg numbers (for gasoline-fueled, automatic transmission-equipped compacts), achieving an EPA combined rating of 35 mpg along with a highway rating of 42 mpg. Another functional upgrade on the 2014 Corolla is roomier seating. Rear passengers, in particular, enjoy nearly 5 inches more rear legroom, which will also make it easier to fit rearfacing child safety seats. Toyota has also restyled the instrument panel to impart a more contemporary

feel. The company also used higherquality interior materials and added a few new features, including keyless ignition/entry. Although the 2014 Toyota Corolla is significantly better than the outgoing model, it isn’t a slam dunk, as the small sedan segment has plenty of strong choices. The Corolla’s perennial archrival, the Honda Civic, has rebounded from its own design missteps to lead this class, while the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus remain wellstocked drivers’ favorites. Nor can the nicely equipped Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte be ignored. That said, the Corolla is far more competitive than before, and this should bolster its already strong sales. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Toyota Corolla is a fivepassenger compact sedan available in four main trim levels: L, LE, LE Eco and S. All but the L are further offered in Plus and Premium sub-trims. Standard features on the base L model include 15-inch steel wheels, LED headlights (low beams only), power windows and mirrors, airconditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity, steering wheel audio controls and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB/iPod interface and an auxiliary audio jack. The LE adds 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, keyless entry, metallic cabin accents, cruise control, power door locks, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, a six-speaker sound system with a 6-inch touchscreen display, and Bluetooth audio connectivity and phonebook download capability. The LE Plus adds alloy wheels and foglights, while the LE Premium further adds premium vinyl upholstery. The LE Eco includes the LE features and adds specific engine and transmission tuning, low-rolling-resistance tires, a rear spoiler and enhanced aerodynamics. The LE Eco Plus adds alloy wheels, foglights, chrome beltline trim and an Eco driving mode, while the LE Eco Premium adds premium vinyl upholstery. The S includes the LE features and adds a chrome grille frame, foglights, color-keyed mirrors with signal repeaters, a rear

spoiler, front sport seats, a leatherwrapped steering wheel, upgraded instrumentation, a trip computer and piano black accents. The S Plus adds 17-inch alloy wheels, firmer suspension tuning and rear disc brakes, while the S Premium gets premium vinyl upholstery. Key options for the Plus and Premium trims include a sunroof and a Driver Convenience package that includes keyless ignition/entry, smartphone app integration, satellite radio, HD radio and a navigation system. Powertrains and Performance Every 2014 Toyota Corolla is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. On every model except the LE Eco, it produces 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. For the LE Eco, an enhanced, more efficient version of this engine is used; it’s rated at 140 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the L and S trims. Optional on the L is a four-speed automatic transmission, while a CVT is optional on the S and standard on the LE and LE Eco. When equipped with the CVT, the S model features steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters as well as a Sport mode that sharpens transmission and steering response. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 31 mpg combined (28 mpg city/37 mpg highway) with the six-speed manual and essentially the same with the L’s four-speed automatic. With the CVT, you’ll get a slightly better 32 mpg combined (29 city/38 highway for the LE, 29/37 for the S). Finally, the LE Eco, thanks to its special engine and fuel efficiency tweaks, earns an estimated 35 mpg combined (30 city/42 highway). Safety Standard Toyota Corolla safety features include stability and traction control, antilock brakes (front discs/ rear drums for all, rear discs available on the S trim), front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag and a passenger seat cushion airbag. A rearview camera is standard on all versions except the base L. Interior Design and Special Features The 2014 Corolla’s cabin is not exactly exciting, but controls are easy to find and use. The radio features tried-and-true volume and tuning knobs, for example, while

the climate control has large knobs and buttons. The upgraded audio system and navigation systems boast a touchscreen with similarly large virtual buttons and simple, clear graphics. Materials quality is average, and overall, the interior of the Corolla doesn’t look or feel as expensive as the cabins of the Ford Focus and Kia Forte. The Corolla’s optional suite of smartphone-connected services includes the Bing search engine, Pandora streaming radio, traffic data, and sports and stock information. Getting started with Entune can be a hassle, though, since you have to install an app on your phone and register for an account; plus, you always need an active data connection to use Entune. The touchscreen interface has straightforward menus, but it’s sometimes unresponsive to user touch. As with most Toyotas, the front seats are soft and comfy, while those in the S version are firmer and have more pronounced side bolsters. There is plenty of space here, even for taller drivers, and the backseat also boasts impressive space. Indeed, at 41.4 inches, rear legroom bests that of most midsize sedans. The Corolla’s trunk capacity is average at 13 cubic feet, but the wide opening eases loading and unloading. If more space is needed, the rear seat splits and folds to increase capacity.

There’s some drone during acceleration, but it’s not particularly irritating. Ultimately, the latest Corolla drives much like the previous one. That means the steering is precise but rather numb (and not the least bit sporty), while the suspension provides a comfortable ride, though you’d never describe it as luxurious or coddling. Similarly, the fourcylinder engine tries hard but begins to feel winded during aggressive passing maneuvers or when climbing mountain grades. The best thing about the new Toyota Corolla is that it never feels as if it’s straining to keep up with traffic or unable to deal with the unexpected. In place of inspiring performance, the redesigned Corolla offers unpretentiousness that expresses itself as character, and that coupled with its legendary reputation for reliability should ensure that the latest version of Toyota’s compact sedan finds a home in plenty of garages. What’s New for 2014 For 2014, the Buick Enclave sees just a few changes. All Enclaves gain an additional pair of charge-only USB ports, while the Premium package picks up forward collision alert and lane departure warning systems. Introduction Large crossover SUVs have become the vehicle of choice for many large families. It’s easy to see why, as these crossovers offer plenty of room inside for passengers and their belongings, as well as the availability of all-wheel drive to get them confidently to their destinations in foul weather conditions. Among these new-age station wagons, the 2014 Buick Enclave stands as a sensible choice, particularly if you want something that’s upscale but still significantly less expensive than the full-on luxury crossovers from various European and Japanese automakers. Like its Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia platform mates, the Buick Enclave offers a spacious cabin, a variety of seating configurations, a pleasant ride and sufficient V6 power. The Buick boasts fancier styling, however, as well as richer interior furnishings than its cousins. It also comes with more equipment, as all models feature amenities like xenon headlights, triple-zone automatic climate control and the IntelliLink touchscreen electronics interface (which includes smartphone app integration) as standard. Naturally, there are plenty of choices out there. Checking out the Enclave’s aforementioned Chevy and GMC relatives is still a good idea, as you may like their styling or lower base prices. The Ford Flex, with its wagonlike styling and available turbocharged V6, is a funkier take on the same theme and definitely worth a test-drive, as is the more athletic-handling and nearly as spacious Mazda CX-9. And if you’re willing to drop down a bit in size, higherend rivals like the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60 have even nicer interiors, advanced features, and in the case of the Infiniti, an available hybrid powertrain. The MDX, meanwhile, offers the best overall driving characteristics of any three-row SUV in this price range. These are all worthy vehicles, but with its handsome styling, enormous cabin and competitive pricing, the 2014 Buick Enclave easily holds its own in the current population of family-friendly crossovers. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Buick Enclave is a full-size crossover that essentially comes in three trim levels that are referred to as groups: Convenience, Leather and Premium. Every Enclave comes standard with second-row captain’s chairs and sevenpassenger capacity. A second-row

bench seat is optional on the Leather and Premium groups and increases the seat total to eight. The Enclave with the Convenience Group comes with 18-inch wheels, automatic xenon headlights, rear privacy glass, a power liftgate, heated mirrors, rear parking sensors, remote ignition, cruise control, tri-zone automatic climate control, an eightway power driver seat (plus two-way lumbar adjustment), a two-way power passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Standard electronic features include OnStar telematics, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, Buick’s IntelliLink electronics interface (which includes voice control and smartphone radio app integration), dual USB charge ports (on the rear of the center console) and a six-speaker sound system that includes a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod/USB audio interface and satellite radio. Stepping up to the Leather Group adds 19-inch wheels, a blind-spot warning system, cross traffic alert, leather upholstery, heated front seats and an eight-way power passenger seat. The top-of-the-line Premium Group includes all the above plus adaptive headlights, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, a blindspot monitoring system, a rear crosstraffic alert system, forward collision alert system, lane departure warning system, a power-adjustable steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and a 10-speaker Bose sound system (optional on Leather Group). Options on the Leather and Premium groups include 20-inch wheels, a dual-panel sunroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, a 110-volt power outlet, a Bose surround-sound audio system and a navigation system integrated into IntelliLink. Powertrains and Performance Every 2014 Buick Enclave comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is an option. Properly equipped, the Enclave can tow 4,500 pounds. In Edmunds performance testing, an allwheel-drive Enclave went from zero to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, which is on par with other large crossovers with a base V6. EPA-estimated fuel economy

stands at 19 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) with front-wheel drive and 18 combined (16 city/22 highway) with allwheel drive. Safety Every 2014 Enclave includes antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front outboard side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. Also standard is a large airbag that deploys between the front seats in the event of a side impact. The standard OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, an emergency button, stolen vehicle locator and active intervention, and remote door unlock. Rear parking sensors are standard on all versions. The Leather and Premium Groups include a blind-spot warning system and a cross-traffic back-up warning system. The Premium Group also includes forward collision alert and lane departure warning systems. The latter two are optional on the Leather Group. In Edmunds brake testing, an Enclave with the optional 20-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 126 feet, which is an average distance. In government crash tests, the Enclave earned a top five-star rating for overall performance, with five stars being given for total front-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. The Enclave also aced the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, where it earned the highest rating of “Good” in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roofstrength tests. Interior Design and Special Features The Buick Enclave interior exists in a realm between regular- and luxurybranded crossovers. Materials are attractive and of good quality. We particularly like the padded vinyl trim on the dashboard: Thanks to contrasting stitching, it looks like real leather and contributes to the Buick’s classy ambience. The climate controls are operated by three easy-to-use knobs, while every Enclave features Buick’s IntelliLink 6.5-inch touchscreen display. IntelliLink allows smartphone radio app integration, and features a clean layout and intuitive menu structure. The screen itself is mounted low in the driver’s sight line, however, and requires a longer glance away from the road than we’d like. In addition, the system is sometimes slow to respond to

touch inputs (and occasionally misses them entirely), making the interface a bit frustrating. As for more practical matters, the Enclave (along with its GM cousins) is one of the most spacious crossovers available for both people and cargo. Front-row passengers will enjoy abundant head- and legroom, as will second-row occupants. But the middlerow seat cushions are mounted a bit low, which impacts comfort for adults. Sliding those seats all the way back helps alleviate this issue, but doing so effectively kills third-row legroom. The narrow, flat-cushioned third-row seats are easily deployed and stowed, though they’re really only suited for kids and smaller adults. Some competitors, such as the Ford Flex, are a bit better in this regard. As is invariably the case with three-row vehicles, rearward visibility is almost nonexistent when you have a full crew onboard, so the standard rearview camera is a huge help. The Enclave bests all of its competitors when it comes to cargo capacity, though. Even with the third-row seats in place, it can carry up to 23.3 cubic feet of luggage. That figure jumps to 68.9 behind the second row and a cavernous 116.3 cubes with the

second- and third-row seats stowed. Driving Impressions The 2014 Buick Enclave weighs close to 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive, so it’s not exactly light on its feet. The V6 engine provides adequate performance but lacks punch during authoritative passing maneuvers. In addition, the automatic transmission can be slow to react when a quick downshift is needed, though its gearchanges are at least smooth. On the highway, the Enclave is well suited to transporting people and cargo in abundance thanks to its smooth ride and low levels of wind and road noise. Driven around turns, this big crossover SUV still feels reasonably secure and planted, but it’s by no means sporty.
