Laker readers are a dedicated bunch and, over the years, have eagerly shared their affection through one of our most popular features, Take the Laker With You. The gist is you travel to interesting locations, take a copy of the magazine and snap a photo with a cool background — historic landmark, stunning scenery, quirky attraction. From Aruba to New Zealand, the Laker has been all over the globe. For this issue, as part of our special 10th anniversary coverage, we’ve plotted all the submissions we’ve printed over the years (more than 100) and chosen 10 of our all-time favorites to reprint. TAX SMARTS 2011 IS A CRITICAL YEAR FOR TAX PLANNING ROTH IRAS: A SMART TAX IDEA FOR CHILDREN

ersuading your children who work for your business to make retirement contributions may not be easy, but investments in Roth IRAs may be the wisest possible use of their earnings. The nature of Roth IRAs, coupled with the effects of long-term compounding, can create exceptional returns on such early investments. Although contributions to Roth IRAs are not deductible, earnings within the accounts (such as interest or dividends) are not taxed and qualified withdrawals, such as first time home purchase expenses, death or disability, are completely tax-free. Tax-free compounding can result in sizable accumulation in a Roth. For example, if a 15-year-old contributes $2,500 for each of four years, and the account earns 5% annually, the fund will be worth about $85,000 when the child reaches age sixty. Your child’s contributions to a Roth IRA (excluding the earnings) can be withdrawn at any time without triggering taxes or penalties. This flexibility can be used to fund college expenses for your children when needed. The owner’s ability to deduct contributions is the one advantage a traditional IRA offers over a Roth IRA. However, this feature is relatively insignificant for most young earners. The first $5,800 of a child’s 2011 income will be entirely sheltered by the standard deduction, and any earnings above $5,800 are likely to be taxed at very low rates. This year, most working people can contribute up to the lesser of their earned income or $5,000 to a Roth IRA. Couple this advantage with the ability to make contribution withdrawals makes for an effective tuition savings program. Thanks to Take the Laker, I know where Eva Peron is buried, that Oregon’s Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States (and seventh deepest in the world), where Tanzania is located and countless other interesting facts. My co-workers will tell you I get excited (probably too excited) when photos come in featuring Lakers in countries we’ve never included before. Through the years, several submissions have been so interesting we thought they merited stories in our sister publication, Laker Weekly. One recent feature detailed the hectic life of lake resident Josh “J-MO” Miller, guitar technician for pop sensation Justin Bieber. Another chronicled a sweet story about Rod Pitta, a part-time Laker who took out an ad in a Key West, Fla., newspaper while he and wife Bev were there celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. In it, he asked those who saw the couple around the resort city to offer their condolences to Bev for “putting up with me for all these years.” In honor of the magazine’s 10th anniversary, we’ve compiled all of the Take the Laker submissions and pinpointed them on a map, which follows on pages 24-25. More than 100 have run in the magazine and dozens more are posted on our website, smithmountainlake.com (unfortunately, we can’t publish them all). In addition, we’ve chosen 10 of our all-time favorite submissions – ones where readers have gone the extra mile to include famous landmarks, unusual attractions or stunning scenery – and are re-running here. The family traveled to Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and Germany to celebrate Olivia’s graduation from East Tennessee State University, where she earned a degree in engineering. “We took the Laker with us on the whole trip to show friends and relatives where we lived,” Nick said.

Loretta McLaughlin took this photo of her husband, Don, in front of a sign along U.S. 20/26 welcoming visitors to Moneta, Wyo. (population 5). “We never saw anything except a crossroad, not even a house,” Don said. “We did see the sign and had to back up for the picture.” The couple, from Union Hall, traveled 8,500 miles on a 30-day trip in the summer of 2008. Don said highlights included the Pacific Coast of Oregon, Yellowstone National Park and Galcier National Park.

Jack and Mary Kuhn of Moneta took the Laker with them on a two-week tour of China in September 2007. In addition to the Great Wall, the couple (parents of Laker Editor Andie Gibson) visited numerous cities and cruised for four days down the Yangtze River. Mary said another highlight of the trip was visiting the Terracotta Army, a collection of 8,099 largerthan-life figures of warriors and horses that date back to 210 B.C.

For a house nestled in a shady spot of a lakefront landscape, the name Double Sunshine may seem rather odd to some. But for homeowners Byron and Nancy Yost, the moniker always has been a clear reminder of what they treasure most. “It refers to our daughters who brought so much sunshine into our lives,” said Nancy Yost, whose affection for Smith Mountain Lake began in the late 1960s, not long after the lake reached full pond. t was 1968 when Nancy Yostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future husband brought her to Smith Mountain Lake on one of their first dates. Water-skiing was her passion, and she and Byron both loved the lake. After they married, the Yosts enjoyed camping at what is now Foxport Marina on Gills Creek. However, that came to an end with the arrival of twin daughters, Courtney and Tucker, in 1973. A few years later, the couple invested in Double Sunshine, a cozy, nine-year-old A-frame across from Foxport. Through the years, the Yosts remodeled the home numerous times to accommodate their growing girls and changing lifestyle. The biggest modification came in 2006 when they built a large garage and added a foyer and stairway to the footprint of the house. They also expanded upward, adding a second story with dormers for a master bedroom and bath, an office for Byron and a little room Nancy calls her â&#x20AC;&#x153;nest.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I told [architect] Jennifer [Lewis] that I loved our little cabin in the woods, so she helped us keep the rustic feel of the house yet converted it from a weekend place to a home to live in full time,â&#x20AC;? said Nancy. Their new floors, made of recycled antique flooring, help preserve the rustic look.

shorelines | LAKE HOMES At the time of the major renovation, Byron had recently retired from First Union Bank and the couple had sold their home in Roanoke. They put their belongings in storage and rented a condo at Bernard’s Landing for nearly a year. “It was difficult to watch the work being done,” Nancy recalled. “They tore out the drywall when rearranging the rooms, and I felt like, ‘This is my house, and they’re destroying it.’” The Yosts said the best thing about the remodeled home is the additional room for visiting family members. “I love seeing the three grandchildren swim, play, fish and swing on the swings that Byron built in the woods,” said Nancy. The Yosts said they’ve attempted to landscape the shady lot a number of times. “We probably should have amended the soil, but we didn’t,” said Byron. “We were in our 30s and were busy with two little children. Also, we love all the trees, which is part of the landscaping problem. But we have had many lower branches cut off to get more light to the plants and a better lake view.” Nancy said, “For a long time, the lake house had always been a place of escape from Roanoke. When we decided to live here full time, I thought I might be lonely. But we have found the lake community to be very welcoming, and we very much like living here.” RIGHT The distressed dining room table is perfect for crafts with grandchildren. re you hankering for a flower garden, but don’t know where to begin? Creating a display that will delight you from spring to fall with hardworking shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals can be easier than you think.

Start with good soil

Alternatively, you can dig or rototill in the amendments. In some parts of SML, where the native soil is dense with stones, it is helpful to dig the areas where you want your beds to a depth of at least 10-12 inches. Throw away the native material, and fill the space with a high-quality, loamy top soil. Be aware that quality control for top soil at the lake is weak. One supplier delivered me clay and another provided river-bottom sand that dried to a concrete texture and was almost nutrient-free. Whichever soil-improvement method you choose, good selections for organic additives include leaves, compost, rotted manure and weed-free straw.

We are blessed with many good things at the lake, but fine, friable soil isn’t one of them. Good soil is the foundation of a successful flower bed. Without it, your plants will be more vulnerable to insects and diseases, less vigorous, and less beautiful. As Karel Čapek wrote in The Gardener’s Year, “I find that a real gardener is not a man who cultivates flowers, he is a man who cultivates the soil.” Choose Powerhouse Performers There are many excellent ways to build To get the biggest bang for your healthy soil. Gaillardia ‘Oranges and Lemons,’ which mixes well with sun-loving plants, is more commonly known as blanketflower because it used to blanket the North American prairies.

Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a show stopper. It starts flowering in early summer and continues non-stop until frost. One caveat: it’s not deer resistant. However, it’s worth the trouble of protecting them for their incredible garden performance. Considered a must-have among Heleniums, ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ is an award-winning selection that blooms prolifically for months beginning in midsummer. The red petals, which surround a prominent brown cone, are often streaked with orange and yellow, creating a striking technicolor tableau. Deer resistant, it grows 2-3 feet high. Blanketflowers are another good bet in a hard-working perennial border, especially Gaillardia ‘Oranges and Lemons.’ For a dynamic combination, plant it with Geranium ‘Rozanne.’ The clear blue flowers of Rozanne next to the lemon yellow Gaillardia blossoms that are highlighted with shades of tangerine orange adds zing to the garden bed and the colors play well against the hue of the lake.

Mix in Foliage

Even the most industrious flowering perennials take time off to rest, so keep those beds looking lively with foliage that keeps on giving. Good possibilities include Hemerocallis ‘Golden Zebra,’ a daylily with yellow striped foliage and golden yellow flowers in midsummer. Heliopsis ‘Loraine Sunshine,’ a perennial sunflower that grows to about 30 inches tall, has white leaves with deep green veining. The yellow flowers are gorgeous in midsummer; the foliage is spectacular all season. Cimicifuga ‘Hillside Black Beauty’ has striking, almost-black foliage. An added bonus is the arching spikes of fragrant pale-pink flowers that rise above the clumps of lacy leaves in early autumn. There has been a recent hybridizing frenzy for coral bells, and gardeners are the beneficiaries. Foliage colors vary from maroons and reds, shades of purple and pink, yellows and oranges, silvers and blacks. Shrubs, which add needed mass in a perennial border design, also provide both flower and foliage interest. Good possibilities include Loropetalum ‘Purple Diamond’ (purple), Sambucus Black Lace (black), Weigela ‘Eyecatcher’ (electric yellow and green variegated), and ninebark (Physocarpus) hybrids with foliage colors including copper and deep purple.

Reach for the Sky

A big mistake in many perennial beds is having everything the same height. For visual variety and to create a sense of rhythm in the design, add vertical elements. Possibilities include vines growing on tall supports or through shrubs and trees, as well as shrubs with an upright growth habit. Consider incorporating a few dwarf evergreen shrubs, such as a fastigiate conifer, that will also give winter interest. Finally, repeat planting patterns in the border to give the design a sense of rhythm, and vary the textures of both leaf and flower for visual variety.

he pontoon headed at full speed toward the stranded sailor, who was struggling to keep the mast from sinking while attempting to pull the swamped Sunfish back to shore. “The boat ran right over me, I was actually under it,” recalled the man several years later, still astounded at the events of that morning when abruptly switching winds overturned the small sailboat. “Then he backed up and I asked him to throw me a rope.” David Baldacci can laugh now when recalling the scene on Smith Mountain Lake — a scene that could have been lifted right out of one of his best-selling suspense novels. But unlike the protagonist in his thrillers, nobody was on a high-risk mission, nor was there any espionage involved. This was neighbor helping neighbor. The Good Samaritan had called out to the sailor in distress, but failed to realize that the man he was trying to help was the prolific author, part-time lake resident and sailing novice. It all ended well. And contrary to what typically happens in his riveting stories, nobody died. A clay-covered Baldacci righted the boat and got back to his dock, although he sheepishly confessed that the story of his capsize was one story he has shared sparingly. “I was told that everybody has turned over a Sunfish at some time, but it didn’t make me feel any better that day,” he recalled.

LAZY LAKE DAYS

For Baldacci, most days spent at his SML home aren’t anywhere near that exciting. He and wife Michelle travel from their home in northern Virginia to Azalea Point, their refuge on the Bedford side near Smith Mountain Dam, with their two teenage children “off and on all year and at Christmas,” he said. Their six-bedroom home has been remodeled to include a new kitchen (Baldacci is an enthusiastic cook), gym and library/media center with 16-foot rolling book shelves. That room is where the family gathers to watch TV and play games, including euchre, a trick-taking card game similar to bridge that is especially popular in the Midwest, from where Michelle hails. But, most of the time, the Baldaccis’ lake lives are centered around the dock. “We come down around 10 in the morning and stay until it’s time for cocktails,” said Baldacci. They

often entertain friends there, including the author’s publisher, who has a home at Bernard’s Landing. The dock is stocked with fishing gear, although Baldacci leaves most of the angling to his father-inlaw. The slips around the dock are stocked, too. A 28-foot formula bow rider, a 23-foot Monterey ski boat, two personal watercraft, a paddle boat, three kayaks and a rowing shell reside there.

shorelines | PROFILE Baldacci, 50, rates himself an 8 or 9 on a scale of 10 as a water-skier, but not so much when it comes to wakeboarding (a 4 or 5). He said son Collin, 15, is a proficient water-skier, too. “He’s the only person I know who got up on a slalom ski the first time,” said Baldacci.

Community Commitments

The dock is where Baldacci has had to dodge the curious who come by boat to gawk or ask him to read a manuscript or to deliver a request for help with charitable events. Once, a man pulled up in front of his dock, and asked Baldacci over the boat’s PA system to join the board of a boating association. He declined. “That’s not my forte,” said Baldacci. “I prefer to help in other ways.” And he does. Baldacci, who practiced law for almost 10 years before turning to writing full time, is well known for his philanthropy. He and Michelle are avid supporters of literacy, which they fund and promote through their Wish You Well Foundation. Baldacci, a self-described “library rat” in his early years, has donated his time and name to fundraisers for, among others, local libraries and SML charitable groups. “Millions of kids are doomed because they can’t read,” he said. “You can’t read,

then you can’t think. They go hand-in-hand, so kids who can’t articulate end up arguing with their fists or guns instead of arguing with words.” Also drawing the author’s support are Smith Mountain Lake businesses. He and his family patronize them whenever they can, he said. The Baldaccis enjoy eating at local restaurants; The Landing and Blackwater Cafe are favorites. “We go down to Bridgewater [Plaza] to the arcade, or Pizza Pub and to the movies,” he said. “We get our hardware at Capps and our coffee at Bluebird Cafe [now closed]. We’re just like everybody else,” said Baldacci. That would be if everybody else went boating in Maine with former president George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, whom Baldacci met through his literacy campaign, or called Clint Eastwood a personal friend. The author and the actor became friendly during the filming of “Absolute Power,” one of the 22 novels Baldacci has written. It was made into a move in 1997. “Clint and I got to be pretty good friends,” he recalled. “In the book, the main character

dies. But Clint Eastwood told me he couldn’t die and had never died in a movie, so I had to come up with a way to keep his character alive.” Baldacci was a substantial investor, on board from the start, in “Lake Effects.” The movie, set and filmed at SML and produced by lake resident Sara Elizabeth Timmins, is expected to be released later this year.

Baldacci and his wife are avid supporters of literacy, which they fund and promote through their Wish You Well Foundation. Baldacci said he would not be surprised to see more movies filmed in Virginia, in part because it’s a right-to-work state. “I think there’s a future in local, independent films,” he said. “Not everything has to come out of California.” Baldacci said one thing that makes Smith Mountain Lake appealing as a movie location is its chameleon-like characteristics.

Baldacci the Author • David Baldacci’s latest book, “Hell’s Corner,” is the fifth in his Camel Club series. It was released in the fall. He’ll sign copies at The Little Gallery at Bridgewater Plaza on Sunday, June 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. • Baldacci’s next book, “Zero Day,” will be released Nov. 1. Set in West Virginia, it will introduce a new character, John Puller, a Ranger-turned-criminal investigator for the U.S. Army. Baldacci recently returned from Georgia, where he spent time at Fort Benning and at a crime lab in Atlanta researching “Zero Day.” Former president George H. W. “It’s beautiful country and can duplicate so many other areas,” he said. Does the author see another of his books made into a movie, and perhaps, filmed at the lake in collaboration with Timmins in his future? “That’s something we’ll talk about,” he said.

Future Plans

For now, Baldacci is busy finishing up book No. 23, “Zero Day”; promoting literacy; conducting exhaustive research for his books; and traveling around the country and abroad for speaking engagements. With his schedule, it’s understandable why he needs to retreat to the lake for R & R. What’s not clear is how he has the time to do it. When Baldacci does decide to leave the rat race and slow down for good, he won’t settle down at the lake, but in Charlottesville, he said. The University of Virginia law school grad loves the area and paling around with fellow lawyer/ author John Grisham, whom he has yet to invite to SML. Baldacci will still come to the lake, however. And he’ll still write. “It’s such a part of me, it would be like asking me to stop breathing,” said Baldacci. “Why stop something that makes you so happy?” The same could be said of his time at SML. 52 May • June 2011 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

• In October, Baldacci will appear with fellow authors John Grisham and Jodi Picoult on behalf of the Mark Twain House & Museum in New Haven, Conn. Baldacci currently is reading the first volume of Twain’s autobiography. • Baldacci said he sees the appeal of e-readers, but prefers reading hardcovers. “I like to thumb through them,” he said. • In “Simple Genius,” released in 2007, Baldacci includes a transcript of the Beale Cipher. It was inspired by Bedford County’s Beale Treasure, which the author said he finds fascinating. “I tell anyone who asks not to try to find it because the response likely would be buckshot,” he said.

urking in the underwater world of Smith Mountain Lake is one of its biggest draws. Within this dynamic, 20,600-acre reservoir is an abundance of popular game fish. Black bass, striped bass, catfish, white perch, crappie, sunfish and carp teem deep below the lake’s surface, attracting fishermen of all skill levels, yearround. Mike Snead, owner of local Angling Adventures fishing guide service and Virginia Outdoorsman tackle shop, said the range of species in Smith Mountain Lake sets it apart from other nearby fisheries. “The lake has a wide variety of species, which means it accommodates a huge variety of fishing styles,” said Snead. “Also, it doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment or electronics to catch bass here. If people have access to a boat, they can troll on this lake and catch bass all year long.” Dan Wilson, Fisheries Biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), agreed. “Smith Mountain Lake has good fish populations, including an outstanding black bass population,” he said. “And the striped bass fishery is very popular. There aren’t many places in the country that can support good striped bass. It’s the premier striped bass fishery in the state and one of the premier striper fisheries on the East Coast.” The lake’s location adds to its popularity as a fishing destination. Vicki Gardner, executive director for the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, pointed out the importance of its location. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Much of its popularity is due to its pugnacious attitude and willingness to strike a lure or bait with explosive force. 2. Carp A prolific fish, the carp is an excellent survivor and is able to tolerate a wide range of conditions and bottom types.

3. Yellow or White Perch As a food and game fish, both rate high with anglers. 4. Striped Bass The striper is SMLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most prized catch. A wide variety of fishing methods are successfully employed, including trolling, jigging, bait fishing, fly fishing and spinning. 5. Smallmouth Bass This species is easily distinguished from the largemouth by its clearly connected dorsal fins, the scales on the base portion of the soft-rayed second dorsal fin, and the upper jaw bone, which extends only to about the middle of the eye. 6. “Smith Mountain Lake is within a 40-minute drive from Roanoke, Lynchburg and other surrounding municipalities. With 500 miles of shoreline reaching into three counties, its central-Virginia location makes the lake convenient to thousands of anglers, casual or competitive,” she said. Smith Mountain Lake also can be a challenging fishery, according to Jim Shauberger, the chamber’s events manager. “I have fished bass for 55 years and thought I was pretty good until I came here. It took me several years to learn this lake,” said Shauberger. “The bass are hard to catch because they have a virtual smorgasbord of food available. I love fishing this lake.”

Experts agree Smith Mountain Lake is fishing friendly because it is fish friendly. Daniel Berthiaume, also known as Captain Bert, owner of Captain Bert’s Fishing Charters, said the geography of lake provides the kind of dwelling fish love. “Smith Mountain Lake is a big body of water. With it being flooded over houses, barns, it creates a great habitat for fish. They have hiding places, all kinds of ground and deep holes,” said Berthiaume. Local fishing authorities also make sure the lake maintains a robust fishery. A slot limit on striped bass put into effect by VDGIF in 2006 has helped the fishery recover from a significant loss of the species in 2003. The limit – in effect from Nov. 1 through May 31 – requires anglers to release striped bass 26-36 inches to encourage a healthier population of larger-sized striped bass. “The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is doing everything in its power to bring the 30-, 40-pound fish back to the lake,” said Berthiaume. “I think their efforts have definitely been working. I’ve been seeing bigger fish that are healthy. There’s no reason to believe they won’t grow and get bigger and healthier every year.”

Pro Fishing Favorite Over the years, Smith Mountain Lake has hosted numerous professional fishing tournaments that have brought national attention to the area, including the Bassmaster Elite Series’ Blue Ridge Brawl, which was televised by ESPN. In May, the amateurs-only Oakley’s Big Bass Tournament is expected to bring 300-400 boats to SML for fishing competition. Shauberger’s love for fishing has landed him on several bass tournament committees at Smith Mountain Lake. He hears straight from the pros what they think about the fishing scene at SML. “They love this lake because it is the prettiest lake they fish. The people on the shore are very nice to them. The crowds at the weigh-in are the largest they experience shy of the Bassmaster Classic, and the fishery is very challenging. This is a top-choice lake even though it is one of the smallest venues they fish,” he said.

Fishing Fun for Anyone You certainly don’t have to be a professional to have fun fishing at Smith Mountain Lake. Like many who drop a line into SML’s waters, Gardner said she appreciates a leisurely approach. No pressure, just a rod, worm and good friend to share the experience. “I was raised on Cayuga Lake in New York and have fished my entire life,” Gardner said. “I’m basically a sit-on-the-dock-withmy-neighbor, drown-worms, sip-wine, chatand-laugh-until-a-fish-bite-interrupts-ourconversation kind of angler.” Dale Wilson, long-time local resident, former school teacher, and owner of Dale Wilson Guide Service, encourages adults to introduce youth to the fun of fishing. “I work a lot with children,” Wilson said. “I’ll take any age group that’s old enough to have an attention span and wants to learn. If you can get children started at a young age, it’s something that carries over throughout their lives. It’s rewarding to see someone catch a fish who’s never caught one before.”

s Smith Mountain Laker Magazine celebrates 10 years of publishing all things related to the lake, one of the area’s most meaningful attractions is marking a similar milestone. In June, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The memorial’s close proximity makes it a popular destination for SML residents and visitors. Bob VandeLinde of Moneta, a Korean War veteran, author and avid supporter of the D-Day Memorial, has volunteered weekly as a tour guide at the site for the past seven years. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

“The memorial’s purpose is to tell people all over the world the story about the battle that changed World War II,” said VandeLinde, who donates the proceeds of his book “Respect: Forgotten Heroes” to the Memorial. “The guys that went into Normandy were the

Cheek-Messier said the past 10 years have been both rewarding and difficult. While the organization in 2007 became debt-free, as many nonprofits do, it struggles financially. She said one way she hopes the National D-Day Memorial Foundation will become more financially stable is by increasing awareness nationally and internationally. “Fundraising, in general, for a nonprofit is very challenging, and in this economic climatex is even more so,” said Cheek-Messier. “The foundation is working on identifying new donors while also trying to expand its reach.” In honor of its milestone anniversary, the D-Day Memorial is planning several special events, including a commemoration ceremony the morning of June 6, the 67th anniversary of D-Day.

“The commemoration kicks off with the showing of the award-winning documentary, ‘Bedford: The Town They Left Behind.’ The film will be shown outdoors at the memorial and the producers of the documentary, The Johnson Group, will be on hand to introduce the film,” Cheek-Messier said. “The memorial also will present a nighttime illumination on the evening of June 4, as hundreds of luminaries light up the Necrology Wall listing the names of all 4,413 Allied D-Day fallen.” Cheek-Messier said honoring veterans is the most important mission of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation and its supporters. “As more and more members of the World War II generation pass on, it becomes increasingly important to preserve their legacy and to give thanks while they still walk among us,” she said. “The National D-Day Memorial has committed itself to both tasks. In the words of one D-Day paratrooper, for those who ‘gave all their tomorrows that we might have today,’ it is the least we can do.”

With its open-air setting, tropical decor and colorful characters, spending a summer afternoon at Portside is like being transported to Key West. Located at Virginia Dare Marina, the restaurant has a small menu with casual fare such as wings, burgers and peeland-eat shrimp. Not surprising, the margarita is Portside’s most popular drink.

In the Works At press time, several other area entrepreneurs were working to open waterfront restaurants in time for the summer season: >> Tom and Lynn Gordon, owners of The Blackwater Café, said they hope to open Jake’s Place at the Harbour some time in June at the former location of Harrison’s (Camper’s Paradise before that) just above Hales Ford Bridge. >> Waller Perrow, a Huddleston restaurateur, also confirmed he plans to open an eatery at Crystal Shores Marina in the location of the former Finz Bar and Grille. He said he hopes to have the restaurant, which he described as a bar/grill/deli, open in May. >> Mexico Viejo, already a staple at Crazy Horse Marina, could open a second location at Indian Point (the former Vieira’s Restaurant location) in June, according to Rose Halliday, executive secretary. “It is a fun, fun hobby,” said Ralph Brush, an SML retiree who makes his own wine when he’s not enjoying other activities such as golf and sailing. Brush said he prefers white wine such as French Chardonnay, while his wife, Barbara, likes a more substantial red such as Malbec from Argentina. So, they make both. Ingredients are available to make any variety of wine imaginable in any style – from fresh, light and ready to drink, to an age-worthy red or even a rich afterdinner wine such as port. After an initial investment of about $100 for equipment, subsequent batches can be produced for about $4 to $5 per bottle. Brush said one benefit of homemade wine is that it can be produced without using preservatives if it is meant to be consumed within six months. If he intends to age the wine for a longer period of time, he adds some sulfites just like commercial winemakers do. “You have to be patient when you’re making wine,” he said, explaining that he begins by boiling his well water to sterilize it. He then adds grape juice purchased from a supplier. Yeast is pitched, which kicks off the fermentation process, 96 May • June 2011 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. After about a week, Brush uses a hydrometer to check the sugar content. When it reaches the correct level, he drains the wine off the dregs into a clean container where it will rest for approximately four weeks. Brush makes one 6-gallon batch at a time, which translates into about 30 bottles of finished product. He prints and affixes personally designed labels to the bottles, seals them with a cork and finishes them with a foil capsule. The capsule has to be heated to shrink to the bottle. Brush said he initially tried using a hair dryer for this function, but it just didn’t get hot enough, so he invested in a heat gun. The label – Loonfeather – features the same name as the couple’s sailboat, which they’ve owned for 30 years, the past 17 on Craddock Creek of Smith Mountain Lake. “The bottles make great gifts. People really seem to appreciate them,” said Brush. “But you cannot sell them because that is illegal. Making [wine] is not illegal.” Brush, who puts the wine on par with bottles in the $15-$20 range, said most of his wines finish up with an alcohol content of about 10 percent, which makes them light and drinkable. He said some of his winemaking friends, including fellow SML resident Mike Wachter, add sugar, which results in a higher alcohol content. and chocolate-orange port. He makes a 3-gallon batch and adds a sugar or glucose syrup and extra yeast to bring the alcohol content up to a warming 20 percent. Wachter, a retired financial planner and an officer with two local volunteer fire departments, said he was quite proud of recent batches he produced of Barolo and Chianti, Italian-style wines that pair well with tomato-sauce dishes such as spaghetti. “The thing that makes any of our wines better than over-thecounter wine is we don’t add any preservatives,” Wachter said. “It’s a pure taste; I just like it better.” Both winemakers emphasized the importance of sanitation. All equipment that touches the wine has to be sterilized with a sanitizing solution. If the wine becomes infected, it could result in a secondary fermentation in the bottle, which would ruin the whole batch. Brush and Wachter used to purchase equipment and supplies through catalogs but now are able to buy from several nearby shops that offer products and advice, including Pints O’ Plenty in Forest and Blue Ridge Hydroponics in Roanoke.
