GOOD
Intentions – it provides direction for gifts you can buy without ever leaving the lake area. Best wishes for a happy – and stress-free! – holiday season.
Every year around this time, I resolve to find ways to reduce the stress that accompanies the holiday season. I’m going to get my cards out earlier, simplify the decorations, finish my shopping well in advance and cut back on the baking. (Do we really need four different varieties of homemade cookies?) That way, when the end of December arrives, I can sit back, relax and enjoy the company of friends and family. Will this finally be the season I implement my master plan? Probably not. It’s just too hard to resist indulging when it comes to the holidays. And, as you’ll discover while reading through this issue of the Smith Mountain Laker, I'm not alone. If your weakness is holiday decorating, you’ll want to check out the section that starts on Page 28, where four area interior designers share their ideas for creating a spectacular holiday table. To satisfy foodies (and who isn’t one at the holidays?), we asked several of the lake’s top chefs to share holiday recipes and the stories behind what makes them family favorites (Page 60). If you need inspiration in the shopping department, you’ll want to keep our annual Holiday Gift Guide (Page 41) handy. Organized into four categories – Home and Garden; Clothing and Accessories; Pampering; and Sports, Outdoors and Entertainment

TAX SMARTS 2010 IS A CRITICAL YEAR FOR TAX PLANNING
Changes in the tax rules for 2010 and the coming sunsetting of the 2001 Tax Act in 2011 make this year a critical one for tax planning. Whenever significant changes occur in the tax law, there are both opportunities and pitfalls to analyze if you want to manage your tax liability. First, take a look at a few of the 2010 changes that you need to factor into your planning: • Required minimum distributions from retirement plans are back for individuals aged 70½ and older. December 31, 2010, is the deadline for taking the required distribution for this year. However, if this is the first year you’re required to take a withdrawal from your retirement funds, you may choose to delay that first distribution until April 1, 2011. Doing so means you’ll have to take two distributions in 2011. Distributions are taxable, so depending on your income and the tax rates in both years, delaying may not be to your advantage. • Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is now allowed for everyone, regardless of income. The prior $100,000 income limit ended this year. If you do a conversion this year, you can choose to report the taxable income on your 2010 tax return, or split it and report half on your 2011 return and half on your 2012 return. Again, the likelihood of higher tax rates in 2011 and beyond must be considered in your decision. • The phase-out of itemized deductions and personal exemptions for high-income taxpayers ended this year, thanks to a provision in the 2001 Tax Act. Because that law sunsets next year, the phase outs return in 2011. In deciding whether to bunch itemized deductions into this year or next, consider again the tax rates for both years and a full deduction vs. a partial one. Second, realize that this might be the last year to take advantage of certain credits, deductions, and other familiar tax breaks. Tax rates will change next year, making the timing of income and deductions important. Take the time to plan now while you still have two months for your actions to make a difference. To discuss your tax-cutting options at this critical time, please give me a call if you would like to discuss this or for any other assistance concerning your individual and business accounting and tax needs; please feel free to contact me at (540) 297-4204.

O
ne beautiful autumn day in 1993, Skip and Ulita Taliaferro took a drive along the upper Roanoke River part of Smith Mountain Lake to enjoy the fall foliage and look for fishing huts for sale. When they didn’t find anything suitable, the couple ventured to the Union Hall side of the lake in search of a home that had caught their eye during previous on-water excursions up the Blackwater. When the Taliaferros finally located the home, it appeared vacant. “We walked down the lane and peeked through the [glassed] front doors, and I was just blown away,” Ulita exclaimed. “You could see right through the opposite windows to the lake and the glorious fall colors. What a setting.” Their 13-year-old daughter, Shar, pointed out a for-sale sign. “Let’s buy this, Daddy,” she said. They all laughed, but the next day Skip tracked down the homeowner’s name, contacted him and, unbeknownst to his wife, made an offer on the property. It was accepted on the condition that the house would sell “as is.” The owner hoped to avoid the expense of much-needed repairs to the damaged residence that had been used as a party house. Skip, a salesman by trade with an evident gift of gab, was a veteran of major construction on the couple’s mountainside home in Roanoke. Undaunted, he sealed the deal and then broke the news to a shocked Ulita that he had purchased the home on what they had always referred to as “the best point lot The great room’s French doors and high windows invite the on the lake.” With nearly 500 feet of shoreline, the property has outside in. picturesque views up the Blackwater River, not even obstructed A tree-lined walkway leads to the front door of the Taliaferro home. by the dock, which is located to one side.

“Can you believe we would buy a home before we ever set foot inside?” she said. Built in 1984, the home indeed needed a lot of work. “The cedar siding was covered in black mildew and the inside — well, when I finally got to see it, I said, ‘The worse the condition, the better.’ It offered lots of opportunities,” recalled Ulita, an artist and decorator blessed with the ability to see creative potential where others see disaster. The Taliaferros gutted and remodeled the kitchen, replaced many of the windows, moved interior walls, added light fixtures and completely repainted. “You can do a lot with nothing,” said Ulita, pointing out a huge mirror bought at an antique outlet for $5. There are also a large, sturdy dining table and eight chairs she bought secondhand, then sanded and refinished. Twisted willow branches emerge from large pots, and massive floral centerpieces created by Ulita make an inexpensive decorative statement. While the house is only 1,400 square feet, walls of French
doors on the lake side make it seem more expansive. All of the ceilings are cedar-planked, adding warmth. Outside the French doors, an expansive deck accommodates an intimate coffee gathering or a substantial number of party guests. The deck faces west, allowing sunset views, but numerous tall shade trees provide an umbrella against the afternoon sun. A screened-in, eight-sided gazebo on one end of the house is a cozy spot with a view of the lake. “It’s always been one of my favorite spots to relax,” said older daughter Decca, so named because her parents had been married a full decade before her birth. According to Ulita, the location of the house was planned according to the trees on the lot, giving it the feeling of a house in the woods. The deck is even built around a large tree. In 1993, their lake view was only of trees and fields with no other houses visible. Although some homes now can be seen in the distance, the outstanding lake view and colorful fall leaves on the many trees remain. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Winter is toughest season of the year for those of us who love to garden. The blooms of summer have faded, the days are shorter, the air is cool. Even in Virginia, the weather often keeps us confined to the indoors, able only to dream of spring when we can get back outside to dig in the dirt. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

With a good basic design – which includes trees, shrubs, and grasses that look beautiful in all seasons – your garden can please the eye and provide the promise of fresh wonders in the coming spring. Following are some qualities to look for in a plant that brings joy to the winter months.
Evergreens
Evergreen trees are an obvious choice for maintaining color in the cold-season garden, and there are a host of options, including golden or yellow-tipped conifers that bring the light of sunshine to the drabbest winter day.
Ornamental Grasses
There is a wide selection of hardy perennial varieties to choose from ranging in size from low-growing plants good for edging to tall, stately clumps reaching 10-15 feet tall. Miscanthis sinensis is an invasive, overused grass. Instead consider some of the new sedges (Carex), fountain grass (Pennisetum) hybrids, feather grass (Stipa tenuissima) and rush (Juncus) hybrids. These are graceful grasses that 24

lend themselves to many landscape uses, including containers, and come in a delightful range of foliage colors and textures.
Silhouettes
In the deciduous realm of plants, choose ones with that have fascinating silhouettes once the leaves have dropped. Japanese maples are a wonderful choice as are quince trees (Cydonia oblonga) and the contorted willow (Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’). Plant willows near the water in a spot where they can grow to their full natural size.
Berries
Berry-bearing shrubs and trees are a delight in a winter landscape. Hollies, nandina, cotoneaster and pyracantha all hold their berries into winter. Another good choice is winterberry (Gaultheria procumbens), a native ground cover for shady woodland areas. Other berry-bearing natives include beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) which produces clusters of vivid purple bead-like berries, and winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata). Within the Viburnum genus are many native as well as imported options that produce attractive winter berry displays. In addition to their fruiting interest, berry-laden trees and shrubs
WINTER wonders Following are a few plants recommended for winter interest in Smith Mountain Lake-area gardens. For a more comprehensive list, visit smithmountainlake.com/homes.
Evergreens
•Cedrus atlantica (Atlas cedar): Look for cultivars such as ‘Argentea’ (pale silvery bluish gray), ‘Aurea’ (yellowish needles), ‘Fastigiata’ (upright form), ‘Glauca’ (blue), and ‘Glauca Pendula’ (blue weeping form). •Ilex spp. (holly): There is a wide choice of suitable evergreen hollies. Check with your favorite nursery for selection.
Ornamental Grasses
•Carex flagellifera ‘Toffee Twist’ (sedge): Elegant, trailing habit with mahogany colored foliage accented with green and red hues. Noninvasive and low maintenance. • Juncus decipiens ‘Curly Whirly’ (corkscrew rush): New dwarf cultivar with clump-forming, shiny dark green, corkscrewing and spiraling foliage.
Silhouettes
• Acer palmatum (Japanese maple): Size and shape vary with cultivars; check with local nurseries or on the internet for selections. • Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ (Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick): Deciduous shrub with twisted and spiraling branches, twigs and leaves.
Berries
• Callicarpa americana (American beautyberry): Metallic violet berries clustered around stem in autumn.
attract birds such as cardinals, which are like living Christmas ornaments – a joy to watch at any time of year.
Interesting Bark
Many deciduous trees and shrubs have multicolored and/or peeling bark that stands out dramatically in a winter landscape once the distraction and screen of leaves is gone. Excellent choices for colorful bark are the red-barked dogwood (Cornus alba), a small, multistemmed shrub, and its cousins, the red osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera ‘Flaviramea’) and the bloodtwig dogwood (Cornus sanguinea). Because these dogwood species are not particularly attractive in the summer, plant them at the back of the perennial border so they’re hidden when the perennials are starring, and can then take the lead role in winter when the perennials go underground. Mature crape myrtles have beautifully mottled bark.
Winter Flowers
For winter and early spring flowers, consider hellebores. The deer won’t touch them, and the flowers persist for months. For blooms the first year, purchase larger, more mature plants. Witch hazel, which you can grow as a large, vase-shaped shrub or a small tree, produces spidery flowers very early in spring. Flower color possibilities include yellow, orange or red. Also consider the native witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana.
• Viburnum: Many viburnums do well in our area, although in most species the berries turn black by the end of summer or are eaten by the birds. V. dilatatum ‘Erie’ is a round shrub 6’ tall by 10’ with prolific red fruit that turns coral after frost, growing pinker through the winter.
Interesting Bark
• Acer griseum (paperbark maple): Cinnamon brown to reddish brown exfoliating bark reveals lighter tan or salmon color underneath. • Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ (coral bark Japanese maple): Cold weather intensifies the color of the coral red winter bark. Sometimes mistakenly called ‘Corallinum’
Winter Flowers
• Chionodoxa luciliae (Glory of the snow) • Hamamelis x intermedia (witch hazel): Deciduous shrub or small tree produces fragrant blooms in February and March. Cultivars recommended by Lakescapes Nursery include ‘Arnolds Promise’ (yellow), ‘Jelena’ (copper), and ‘Diane’ (red). The native witch hazel, H. virginiana, with yellow flowers, is available, but hard to find.

Together S
ome of our most treasured holiday moments are spent around the dinner table enjoying the company of cherished family and friends. From a traditional Thanksgiving feast to an elegant Christmas dinner, November and December provide a number of opportunities to entertain and celebrate. Whether it’s a large gathering or an intimate affair, you want the center of it all – the holiday table – to truly shine. But for many, the thought of coming up with a decorative look that’s fresh and unique (without breaking the bank) can be daunting. So, to provide a little inspiration, the Laker enlisted the help of four of the area’s top interior designers. Two showcased ideas for Thanksgiving while two focused on Christmas. All provided easy and affordable tips to help you create a beautiful and memorable holiday table. - Andie Gibson, Editor
Outdoor Elegance ɶɶIf the weather permits, consider placing your Thanksgiving table outside or on a covered porch or gazebo to truly take advantage of autumn’s brilliance. ɶɶNature provides many decorating items at this time of year – acorns, pumpkins, gourds and leaves are abundant. Incorporate them in your tablescape to add textural interest. ɶɶCreate drama by using pedestals and other objects to vary the heights of your decorations. ɶɶDon’t limit yourself to typical table coverings. Experiment with burlap, quilts and scarves to create interest. Janice Thurman and Sally Cosgrove Envisions Distinctive Interiors Lakewood Professional Center 540.719.1500 envisionsva.com

Nature’s Bounty ɶɶTake a trip around your yard to gather natural items. Pine cones, dried berry twigs, sunflowers and dried hydrangea all make beautiful accents, and they’re free! ɶɶTurn a bowl or basket upside down and drape a runner over it to get your centerpiece started. Continue layering on accents to add height, texture and color. ɶɶIf you have additional materials, consider decorating your buffet or a nearby side table to complement your centerpiece. Use a pumpkin for height and then keep filling in with assorted garden elements. Pat Cundiff P.A.C. Interiors & Floor Fashions LakeWatch Plantation 540.719.0001 pacinteriors.com

Sophisticated Simplicity ɶɶDon’t be afraid to deviate from traditional holiday colors. Incorporate burgundies, oranges and cinnamons, or choose colors to complement your home’s existing interior design. ɶɶKeep it simple and elegant, but add a punch of color with bright napkins and a little sparkle with beaded placemats. ɶɶTo give your table more interest, vary the textures with items such as iridescent glasses and feathered napkin rings. Classic Charm ɶɶAdd a little sparkle by scattering holiday ornaments around your table. It’s also fun to use ornaments or other colorful decorations as whimsical napkin rings. ɶɶDon’t be afraid to mix and match table settings. Using a variety of patterns and colors with linens and dishes adds depth and visual interest. ɶɶPlace a small ornament or box of chocolates at each place setting as a favor for your guests. Have it double as a place card by securing a personalized name tag with holiday ribbon. Kris Willard Interiors by Kris Westlake Towne Center 540.721.8354 interiorsbykris.com

Warm welcome Lake residents have quickly embraced Old Oak Cafe
Story by Andie Gibson • Photography by Huong Fralin
Despite being relatively new, Old Oak Café has already made quite an impression on the Smith Mountain Lake dining scene. While most eateries at the lake rely heavily on tourists, Old Oak, which opened in March, has focused on building a loyal following of locals looking for a relaxed atmosphere to linger over a fresh, hot breakfast, enjoy a quick, hearty lunch or grab a specialty coffee to go. Clockwise from right: Patrons gather for lunch in Old Oak Cafe's rear dining room; specialty drinks made from a custom blend of coffee can be enjoyed in house or to-go; the restaurant's “All Things Onion” burger includes carmelized onions and fried onion rings. Opposite page: The popular soup and salad bar features a variety of fresh items.
WELCOME CONTINUED “I like the price range, the atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly,” said Moneta resident Mandy Martin, who meets friends at Old Oak for meals 3-4 times a month. “I love the choices on the menu. It’s just a nice, well-rounded place that I thoroughly enjoy.” The response has come as no surprise to owners Randy and Lila Watson. “We designed the restaurant for locals, not tourists,” Randy Watson said, “and all the response has confirmed that we did the right thing.” The Watsons aren’t newcomers to the restaurant and hospitality industry. They owned and operated a Minnesota lakefront resort for five years before selling and returning to Lila’s native California. But the state’s high cost of living and depressed economy soon had them looking for business opportunities elsewhere. “We researched all 50 states,” Randy Watson said. “We came up with our top five, and then broke it down into other categories like recreation. We decided on Virginia because it has four seasons, a moderate climate and a combination of mountains and water.” Randy visited the state on a sightseeing trip in the spring of 2009, made a detour to SML, spent three days and decided he liked what he saw. The Watsons quickly made the decision to move to the area despite Lila having never visited. “I said, ‘Let’s just go for it,’” she said. While on his initial visit, the one thing Randy Watson said he found lacking at the lake was “a good, quality breakfast. I 58

was able to come in with a fresh set of eyes and say ‘What can I do to fill this niche?’” The couple moved to SML the following July and soon noticed the space at Lakewood Professional Center left vacant when Reds, Wines and Blues closed. They signed a lease and got started on a major remodel to give the restaurant a more comfortable, country feel. And the food at Old Oak, where breakfast is served all day, matches the atmosphere. The most popular item is the Old Oak Breakfast – two eggs, choice of hash browns or country potatoes, choice of sausage, bacon or ham for $5.95. Other top sellers include the cinnamon sweet potato pancakes ($3.99 for three or $5.75 for five) and the Old Oak Burger ($6.25 with your choice of one side item), the most basic of 10 burgers on the menu. Randy Watson said customers also enjoy the menu’s distinctive sandwiches (salmon croquette BLT, grilled portobello panini, and teriyaki steak and cheese melt for example) as well as the soup and salad bar, which is $5.95 on its own or $2.50 when added to any burger or sandwich. The salad bar includes a variety of fresh items and the soups are made from scratch daily. “[The salad bar] is really getting popular,” he said. “We knew we’d hit a home run if we did it well. We make it a display piece. It’s centrally located and adds to the overall ambiance.” Old Oak also offers an assortment of goodies baked daily by Lila Watson and the kitchen staff she manages behind the scenes. The items vary by day and include scones, muffins and cookies.
“We designed the restaurant for locals, not tourists, and all the response has confirmed that we did the right thing. Randy Watson, owner of Old Oak Cafe
The restaurant also serves a variety of hot and cold specialty drinks such as espresso, latte, cappuccino and mocha. The coffee is a custom blend created by Honest Coffee Roasters, a local company operated by the former owners of the now-defunct Solid Ground Coffee & Tea. The couple also plans to offer dinner on Friday and Saturday nights starting in November. New entree items such as steak, seafood and turkey will join some of the heartier items from the lunch menu. The soup and salad bar will also be beefed up. “We’ll give it a try and see how it goes through the winter,â€? Randy Watson said. Old Oak CafĂŠ is located at 400 Scruggs Road, Suite 900, Moneta. The restaurant is open Tuesday-Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, including a complete menu, visit oldoakcafe.com. 540.719.3388

Family Traditions
h Every family has its treasured recipes, the ones so special they’re often only prepared at the holidays. For this issue of the Laker, we asked some of the area’s top chefs to share their culinary traditions, the stories behind why they’re family favorites and the recipes. Enjoy! – Andie Gibson, Editor
Grandma’s Swedish Apple Pie 1 1 1 1½ ½
cup sugar cup all-purpose flour egg sticks of butter, melted cup chopped walnuts Pinch of salt 8 medium apples, peeled and cored Cinnamon for sprinkling
g Mix by hand the first six ingredients to create a batter. g Butter the pie plate and add apples a layer at a time, sprinkling the cinnamon between each layer. After all the apples and cinnamon are in the plate, pour the batter over the apples and give it a little shake. g Bake in a 350-degree oven for about 45 minutes or until the edges are crust and dark golden brown.

y grandmother always made this pie for the holidays because it’s a huge family favorite. Each year, we would drive the 16 hours from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Grandma would bake for days in anticipation of all of her holiday house guests. It didn’t matter if we arrived at 2 a.m., she always had pies ready just in case we wanted a nibble when we got in. If we said we weren’t hungry, she would insist, and we would lovingly oblige, piling around the table to eat apple pie at two in the morning. The next day, we’d help her make more pies for after dinner! Cara McClaine, Sous Chef The Blackwater Cafe SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

his is a recipe my mother and aunt would make for Christmas brunch. On Christmas morning, my mother, father, brother and I would open presents, and when the rest of the family showed up around 11 a.m., we would heat the stratta. Grandma and my aunts would bring other dishes to complement the brunch, but the main course was always the stratta. It’s a very simple dish, open to several interpretations. I make it year-round using seasonal produce – fresh asparagus, morel mushrooms, heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, baby spinach, fresh herbs. Christopher Mushall, Executive Chef Jonathan’s Restaurant
Christmas Stratta 42/3 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced 42/3 cups bacon, cooked and chopped 3½ cups breakfast sausage, cooked and drained 3 cups fully-cooked ham, cubed 21/3 cups green onion, chopped 21/3 cups green pepper, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced ½ cup plus 1 teaspoon grape seed oil 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened ¾ cup half and half 19 eggs 6¼ cups day-old sourdough bread, cubed 42/3 cups cheddar cheese, shredded 1½ teaspoons salt ¾ teaspoon pepper 62

g In a large skillet, brown sausage and bacon. Render fat and reserve meat. In the same skillet, sautĂŠ the mushrooms, sausage, bacon, ham, onions, green peppers and garlic in oil until vegetables are tender. Drain and pat dry; set aside. g In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and half and half until smooth. Beat in eggs. Stir in the bread, cheese, salt, pepper and vegetable mixture. (If preparing for the next day, cover mixture and refrigerate until ready to bake.) g Pour into three greased baking dishes (11-by-7-by2-inches each). Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Yields 32 portions. g For a lighter, vegetarian version, replace the meats with zucchini, tomatoes and artichoke hearts.

Add enough dill pickle juice to cover the breast with about three inches to spare. Marinate overnight (or up to three days) covered and refrigerated. g Remove the breast and measure the pickle juice/ marinade (this is how much oil you will need). Let excess juice drip off of turkey and rub down with two tablespoons of salt and two tablespoons of pepper. Heat oil to 350 degrees (temperature is important so use a thermometer to test). g Very slowly and using protective gloves, lower the breast into the hot oil. Fry breast for 3-5 minutes per pound, plus an additional 5 minutes. Carefully remove from oil. Allow to drain. Carve and serve.

ix years ago, after being served a traditional oven-roasted turkey for Thanksgiving since the beginning of time, my brother Sam and I decided to get creative with our first attempt to fry a turkey. We used a dill pickle bucket from the restaurant and totally submerged the breast in the juice for three days. Our family members thought we were crazy and were hesitant to try our creation. That year, a traditional turkey was roasted as well (just in case the experiment went wrong). After the first bite, everyone was unanimous in their opinion that it was the best turkey they had ever eaten. We have continued the tradition each year since, and have even featured the turkey on our annual Thanksgiving buffet served at the restaurant. Benjamin McGehee, Owner Benjamin’s at The Pointe

his is a dish that my family always has at our holiday gatherings. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Peru, but Christmas is a time when everyone gathers. I am the youngest of 10 children, and when everyone gathers we number 50-plus people. This means a lot of family, a lot of food and a lot of fun. In Peru, Christmas falls in the beginning of our summer. This dish is light and can be served with poultry, beef or seafood. It was always a favorite of my parents, and I remember it was always one of the first dishes to go. Bruno Silva, Owner and Executive Chef The Landing Restaurant

Oh, you shouldn’t have... Gift recommendations for the wine lover on your list
Story by Gordon Kendall
B
ack when I worked as a retail wine consultant, I was frequently asked to recommend a wine or wine accessory that would make a noteworthy gift for someone. I would generally respond with the same question: “Do you know what kind of wine the person likes?” The answers would range from knowing exactly what Napa Valley Cabernet the gift recipient preferred to not even being aware of whether or not the person drank wine. Knowing the type of wine someone prefers is critical. Just as every person has a unique fingerprint or eye iris pattern, everyone has their own distinctive preferences when it comes to the myriad of wine styles out there. Every wine has its own unique aromas, flavors and texture. Some wines are sweet and some dry (not sweet). A wine described as off-dry or semi-dry will have some sweetness. The classic wines such as Bordeaux, Chianti, California Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are all dry wines. Since red wines are made by crushing whole grapes including the skins and the seeds, they contain tannins, which can taste course and bitter to some. Think of unsweetened 68

tea. Some very advanced wine drinkers appreciate firm tannins because they complement the fat in meaty dishes. Other tasters who prefer sweet wines will invariable respond that tannic red wines, “Taste like vinegar.” Questions need to be asked such as red or white, sweet or dry, and, if red, big and bold or light and fruity? Most wine buyers have a price range in mind. This is where finding a wine shop with a knowledgeable associate is very important. Be wary if a wine salesperson starts making suggestions without asking any questions. I would very frequently be confronted with a shopper who had no idea what kind of wine the person liked. At this point the selection process turns into a game of chance. I often would recommend Chardonnay since it is a very popular variety. If the person is someone who prefers the lightly sweet and fruity White Zinfandel, try an estate bottled German Riesling which, while sweet, displays more interesting and complex flavors. Don’t be afraid to select something. People are always excited to receive the gift of wine.
Suggestions for the Season
On the following pages you’ll find wine selections in various price ranges to give you some ideas for holiday gift-giving. The number or stars following the price indicate where the wine can be purchased locally:
* Available at Westlake Kroger ** Available at Laker Beverage and Tobacco

budget-friendly ENTRADA MALBEC Mendoza, Argentina | $6** This wine illustrates why Malbec from Argentina is a great value. At just $6, this red wine offers up bold, rich flavors of berries, plums and spice delivered in a full-bodied package. The Malbec grape originated in the Cahors region of France, but prospered immensely in Mendoza after being imported and planted by European immigrants. Serve this dry, tannic red wine with a grilled ribeye steak.
CHOCOVINE Holland | $10* I must admit I was extremely skeptical of this product until I tasted it. After all, what kind of combination is French Cabernet Sauvignon, Dutch cream and Dutch chocolate? The answer is delicious. The libation is creamy and rich with sweet milk chocolate flavors and a warm finish. Picture an Irish cream liqueur with a dollop of chocolate added. This wine is guaranteed to please a chocolate lover and will only set you back about $10.
CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE CHARDONNAY Columbia Valley, Washington | $11* This wine has everything a Chardonnay drinker desires and is presented in an elegant package. The Columbia Valley’s long, sunny days ripen the grapes to perfection. The wine is aged in oak barrels on the yeast lees, resulting in a wine that has a creamy texture and aromas of apples, peaches, oranges and vanilla. The wine is silky on the palate with notes of apple, vanilla and Crème Brule. This dry wine pairs well with roasted chicken. CONTINUED ON PAGE 70

mid-range treats MONCHOF RIESLING Urzig, Germany | $17* If you’re looking for a high-quality wine to give to a White Zinfandel drinker, consider this German white wine. Monchof, meaning “Monk’s House,” is an estate wine with history dating back to 1177. The vineyards are situated on precariously steep slopes facing the Mosel River. The wine is lightly sweet with bracing acidity and complex mineral notes derived from the soil. Serve this versatile wine with beef roulade stuffed with bacon, onion and mushroom.
VILLA APPALACCIA AGLIANICO Floyd, Virginia| $19** The Aglianico grape is indigenous to southern Italy where it produces robust, hearty red wines. Grape grower Stephen Haskill has adapted it well to Virginia. The wine is full bodied and complex with plum, cherry and earthy notes and a lingering finish replete with fine tannins. It is European in style with more emphasis on complex aromas. This wine would make a great gift for a sophisticated wine drinker because it shows that Virginia is capable of producing world-class wine.
FERRARI-CARANO CHARDONNAY Sonoma County, California | $28** Cindy Gray, co-owner of Laker Beverage and Tobacco, said this wine has become extremely popular with customers. After the grapes achieve perfect ripeness, they are gently pressed so as not to extract bitter components from stems and seeds. The wine is cold settled for a several days before being introduced to French oak barrels where it ages for 10 months. The silky wine displays notes of pear, butter and honeysuckle with a toasty finish. Pair it with seafood such as grilled salmon.

upper-end delights WINE GIFT BASKET
For a more substantial gift, consider a tasteful basket composed of an assortment of wine, gourmet treats and wine accessories. If you’re not skilled at creating your own, Cindy Gray at Laker Beverage can help select items and customize a basket starting at around $25.
D’ARENBERG SHIRAZ (“THE DEAD ARM”) McLaren Vale, South Australia| $51** Don’t let the morbid-sounding name of this massive red wine scare you. The grapes are harvested from old Shiraz vines where one branch (or arm) of the vine has suffered a slow death from a fungal disease. The remainder of the vine produces grapes with an amazing intensity. The wine is concentrated with notes of blackberry, pepper, leather and spices. It would make a great gift for a connoisseur. Serve with hearty red meats such as prime rib of beef.
VEUVE CLICQUOT CHAMPAGNE BRUT NV* Riems, France| $52* This authentic French Champagne is consistently fresh, lively and delicious. The name is derived from the fact that the house was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron. It passed to his son, who married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. When Clicquot died in 1805, the widow (veuve in French) assumed management of the firm and directed it on a successful path. Today, the popular mark is recognized worldwide as a luxury brand. Serve this crisp, dry, sparkling wine with oysters on the half shell or crab imperial.

Holiday fun... Laker style! Story by Jerry Hale and Lindsey Wagnon • Laker Staff Photogrpahy
Families looking to kick off the holidays with fun-filled activities need not travel beyond the Smith Mountain Lake area. Seasonal events are plentiful around the lake, and most are free. The possibilities get even more abundant for those willing to venture a little farther into surrounding communities. So bundle up, grab your camera and head out to make some memories! Virginia Dare Flotilla for Toys Nov. 27, 7 p.m. Virginia Dare Marina 540.297. 7100, vadarecruises.com The lighted boat parade that has kicked off the lake’s holiday season in early December for the past 12 years is moving to the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. The change, like the event itself, is driven by the needs of local children who depend on the generosity of area residents during the holiday season. “In many cases, what these kids receive as a result of this effort will be their only gifts this Christmas,” said Lynda Imirie, who serves as the coordinator for gift distribution at Lake Christian Ministries (LCM), the Moneta-based charity that qualifies area families for participation. Flotilla founder Alice Swain, who operates Virginia Dare Cruises and Marina with her husband, Lynn, said the date change is a reaction to the growing needs of the community. “The sluggish economic recovery and high unemployment rates mean there are even more struggling families in our area this year,” Alice Swain said. “Last year, we noticed that the stores and shops around SML were bustling on Thanksgiving weekend, but that traffic dropped off the first weekend in
December. We thought, ‘Maybe having the boat parade on the holiday weekend will generate more participating boats and crew members, more parade viewers, and thus, more people donating toys.’” Swain said they hope to collect 2,000 new, unwrapped gift items (toys and clothes) from parade participants, those who come out to watch and those who can’t make it but still want to contribute. “We hope to be a significant factor in the Christmases for over 600 needy children in Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties,” she said. Twenty toy-collection boxes will be placed throughout the SML area. Swain also is placing 24 decorated containers at store checkout locations to collect donations to buy additional toys. The Swains are recruiting additional sponsors for the first time and will use the extra revenue to help promote the event. CONTINUED ON PAGE 74 SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

HOLIDAY CONTINUED “We’ve realized that Virginia Dare Cruises can’t continue to drive this effort alone. Without additional businesses as sponsors, the Flotilla for Toys will come to an end, and that would be tragic for the area families that desperately need us,” Swain said. Lakers who wish to take in the splendor of the beautifully decorated boats from SML State Park shorelines will be welcomed with hot apple cider, roasted marshmallows and fellowship by the fire on Nov. 27, beginning at 7 p.m. Just bring a new, unwrapped toy, warm coat, gloves or cap to donate in lieu of park admission. The Flotilla starts at 7 p.m. at the Virginia Dare Marina, cruises up the Bedford side of the lake to Bridgewater Plaza and then back down the Franklin County side. For more information, including locations of toy collection points, call 540.297.7100 or visit vadarecruises.com. Santa Claus at Bridgewater Plaza Nov. 27, 1 p.m. Bridgewater Plaza 540.721.1596, thelittlegallerysml.com At Smith Mountain Lake, Santa doesn’t only arrive by sleigh on Christmas Eve. The jolly old man also cruises into Bridgewater Plaza by boat for an early season appearance Thanksgiving weekend. “It always brings a large amount of people out,” said Carol Swain, co-owner of The Little Gallery, which sponsors the event that is free to the public. “Grandparents, mothers, fathers and people visiting for the Thanksgiving weekend come and wait outside for Santa to arrive by boat. The children follow him to a spot we have set up where he can greet everyone.”

Swain said many Bridgewater Plaza stores and businesses schedule an open house on the same day to offer refreshments, drawings and gift specials to shoppers. Westlake Tree Lighting Dec. 2, 5-7 p.m. Westlake Towne Center 540.721.5288, westlaketownecenter.com Kicking off the holidays with a tree-lighting event is the favorite choice of many lake residents. Fortunately, nearby Westlake Towne Center makes doing so fun and convenient. On Dec. 2, the shopping center will host its fourth holiday treelighting ceremony. The Smith Mountain Lake Harmeneers as well as noted vocalists Phillip and Tara Bouknight will perform at the free event. There will be light refreshments as well as a photo opportunity with Santa. The holiday tree, located in front of the Westlake Library, will be lit around 6 p.m. The first 150 people who donate a new, unwrapped toy for We Care of Franklin County will receive a ticket to a holiday movie showing at Westlake Cinema that evening. “This event provides a wonderful forum for the community to come together and celebrate the spirit of the holiday season while at the same time assisting those who are less fortunate,” said Chris Finley, Director of Marketing for The Willard Companies, which operates the shopping center.
