20th anniversary Take a cruise on Smith Mountain Lake and visit eight impressive lakefront homes Story

Houng Fralin

The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, in its 20th year, provides an opportunity to combine visits to eight beautiful lakefront homes with a magnificent early fall boating outing – all to benefit eight charities which serve the communities around SML. This year’s tour will take place Oct. 1-2 and features homes that are fairly spread out across the lake. Seeing all eight homes in one day may be a bit much for all but the hardest-running boaters, particularly on Saturday when heavier traffic and occasional waits for docking space can make for slower going. Depending on your starting point, this may be a year to go by car for some portion of your tour, especially should weather become a factor. The directions and map on the following pages will help you plan your trip, so be sure to take a copy along. You also may want to pre-mark home locations on a free SML Visitor Info Map (available in Laker Magazine racks throughout the SML area) as an additional navigational aid. 54

While your departure point will be a factor in determining where to go first, our directions begin at Hales Ford Bridge. Heading upstream (away from the dam), evennumbered (red) channel markers will be on your right and oddnumbered (green) markers will be on your left. Lower numbers are closer to the dam. Channel markers do not indicate distance; they may be very close together or fairly far apart. Remember that not all lake maps show roads completely or accurately. Boat courteously; wear life jackets or have them readily available on deck; take along docking lines, fenders, a cellphone and plenty of drinking water. Orange balloons will mark the dock of each home tour house as well as neighboring docks that can be used. All will have attendants to assist boaters. Do not tie up to any dock which has no balloon flying except when there is an emergency. If you plan to take the tour by car, pick up an official Home Tour brochure at the SML Visitor Center at Bridgewater Plaza or dowload driving directions at smlcharityhometour.com.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE SML Charity Home Tour homes are profiled on the following pages in an order that provides an efficient trip by boat. We start with the Noonkester home (No. 5 as it corresponds to the official Home Tour brochure). From there, the homes follow in the order they’re found running down the Roanoke River to and beyond Hales Ford Bridge. Before setting out, consider plotting the home locations on a navigational chart or full-size SML Visitor Info Map, available at Laker Media and in many locations where Laker magazines are distributed. Large orange balloons at each dock will help pinpoint locations.

THE NOONKESTER HOME

#5 on Home Tour Brochure GPS: N 37° 11.0 95’ W 79° 43.162’ The home of Eric and Sallie Noonkester is vintage Mediterranean with many distinctive features. The beautiful arches, tall ceilings (some 15 feet), graceful columns, corbels and sun-drenched interior create a warm, soothing atmosphere. Expansive covered verandas enhanced with pillars and stone flooring provide serene lake viewing areas on two levels. There are three tiers of curved stone walls for gardens. Earth Craft construction techniques were used for energy efficiency.

“Our trips to the Mediterranean were our inspiration for the old-style Italian villa we designed. You can see the creativity and skill Eric used to build it on this steep lot.” Sallie Noonkester 56

Several furniture pieces made in the homeowners’ expansive woodworking shop can be seen throughout the home. View more photos at smithmountainlake.com

The Stroebel home was featured in the July/August 2010 issue of the Smith Mountain Laker. To read an in-depth feature and view additional photos, log on to smithmountainlake.com.

“John put together a DVD with music and photos about the lake and its beauty, and we gave copies to friends and relatives saying, ‘Here’s your invitation to visit.’” Denise Stroebel 58

THE HALL HOME

#8 on Home Tour Brochure GPS: N 37° 05.962’ W 79° 38.812’ The home of Michael and Laurie Hall has been remodeled outside (adding stone and HardiPlank) and inside, which was completely gutted. Updated and new items include all bathrooms, the kitchen, two screened porches and decks, wine room and attractive distressed hickory flooring throughout. The homeowners reworked the landscaping twice — once eight years ago when they bought the house and again just recently. The home features a changeable artificial golf green.

“Michael, who formerly owned a kitchen business, redid the kitchen first; then a contractor did the rest before we moved here permanently.” Laurie Hall 60

DIRECTIONS: Return to the main channel and turn right to head down river. Pass under Hales Ford Bridge and continue on to R25, where you will bear right into a cove past the condos in The Waterfront. Turn right into the second smaller cove on the right. Dock is on the right at the end of this cove. Docking is limited with little maneuvering space, so attentive boat handling is required. There are many steep stairs to the house. This may be one house to save for a trip by car.

THE GAFFNEY HOME

#2 on Home Tour Brochure GPS: N 37° 03.298’ W 79° 32.531’ Jim and Mary Lou Gaffney’s home renovation doubled their living space. The couple opened up the original house to create a large area of living, dining, den and kitchen with a huge mountainfacing dining room large enough to accommodate the many family members who visit. The view is spectacular. The Gaffney home has a large dock with a comfortable area for lounging, entertaining and enjoying water sports.

“Jim walked in with the realtor and said, ‘We’ll take it.’ Asked if he wanted to see the rest of the house, he said, ‘The house can be changed; this is all about the view.’” Mary Lou Gaffney 66

September • October 2010 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

DIRECTIONS: SML boaters who have never ventured all the way down to Witcher Creek get their chance this year. Head downstream toward the dam, passing between Vista Pointe and R8, then keep R6, R4 and R2 to your left. Angle left after passing R2, pointing your bow toward W1 in the distance (to the right of the distant island). The Gaffney home is the second one to the left of W1; The Piatt home (#3, next page) is just to the right of W1. Tie up at either dock to see both houses.

#6 on Home Tour Brochure GPS: N 37° 00.786’ W 79° 37.199’ Wayne and Joan Peppers’ home has an open design for easy entertaining with a bar/grillroom off the kitchen opening to the deck. Green features include use of recycled materials such as kitchen and wine cellar tiles made from crushed wine bottles, easily renewable materials such as bamboo and cork flooring and a three-zone geothermal system. An elevator, walk-in shower and three-foot-wide doors and aisles make the home handicapped-accessible. Droughttolerant plants minimize the need for landscaping irrigation. The Peppers home was featured in the March 26 issue of our sister publication, Laker Weekly. To read the story and view additional photos, log on to smithmountainlake.com.

“When designing the home with the draft person, our goals were to accommodate large gatherings, be handicapped-accessible, ‘go green,’ and make maintenance easy.” Joan Peppers 70

DIRECTIONS: Return to the main channel and head past Vista Pointe condos, leaving marker B1 to port. Angle across the mouth of the Blackwater and to B2, B4 and B6 in quick succession. At B6, turn left toward the mouth of Bull Run, keeping Christmas Tree Island well to the right and entering Bull Run near marker BU1. Follow the left-hand shore (leaving room to port for oncoming traffic). Pass BU3, then turn left around BR1 into Little Bull Run Creek. You’ll pass a series of townhomes and condos at The Water’s Edge on your left and Palmer’s Marina and Penhook Boat Dock (blue buildings) to your right. The Peppers home is the second single-family residence past the condos on the left.
