When do you do your holiday shopping? Maybe you’re a planner who scours stores year-round to find the perfect present for everyone on your list. Or perhaps, like me, you wait until retailers start their post-Halloween marketing blitz to realize it’s time to get on the stick. Regardless of your preference, I hope you’ll make Smith Mountain Lake stores your go-to spots for holiday shopping this year. Our area has a wide variety of shops with distinctive merchandise and friendly owners and employees. And when you commit to shopping local, you not only avoid long lines and traffic, you support SML retailers during the non-tourist winter season. It’s a win-win! Find more info on a growing national effort to encourage support of small businesses, as well as our annual guide to retail shops at the lake, beginning on Page 64.

In June, Bill and Sandy Ohlerich of Hardy made a stop in Mykonos, Greece, where they posed for this photo with the Laker in front of the island’s iconic windmills. Built by the Venetians starting in the 16th Century, the windmills were used primarily to mill wheat. The trip was part of an 18-day Mediterranean cruise the Ohlerichs took, which covered 3,144 miles and included stops in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Croatia. “It was the trip of a lifetime,” Bill said.

Roger Rohweder took this photo of Lucy Alexander with the Laker at Quinta de Bolivar in Bogota, Colombia. The pair, from Huddleston and Durham, North Carolina, toured the colonial house, now used as a museum dedicated to the life of Simon Bolivar, a Venezuelan military and political leader who was instrumental in revolutions against the Spanish empire in the early 1800s.

In June, Danny and Lynne Morris of Staunton enjoyed a family vacation in the Tetons, Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “We had a great time horseback riding, floating the Snake River and hiking Yellowstone,” Danny said. The couple took this photo at 10,600 feet with part of the Teton Range in the background.

Union Hall neighbors Tom and Bev Scott and Jean and Ken Hurt visited Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Russia, Finland and Sweden during an extended trip in May and June. The couples took this photo with the Laker in front of Catherine the Great’s Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Lib and Charlie Walker of Moneta display a copy of the Laker at the Cathedral at Bayeux, France. The couple traveled in June with 50 fellow members of the Bedford International Alliance to the Normandy region of France to attend the 70th anniversary celebration of D-Day.

hen it comes to Christmas trees, some might consider Scott Sayre a bit over the top. The Idlewood Shores resident has six tall trees, two that measure 4 feet and several smaller trees that make the home he shares with husband Jeff Wetter a holiday spectacle to behold. It took Sayre five full weekends — all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday — to decorate the trees. He started in October. “I guess I got my love of Christmas trees from my mother,” he said. “When I was growing up, she’d put up a traditional tree in every room of our house. The house looked great.” And these are not your run-of-the-mill Christmas trees; each has a distinct theme. The Disney Tree — the one that started it all – dates back about 15 years, Sayre said. “I had started collecting Disney ornaments five years earlier, so I had enough for a small tree.” Now, in addition to ornaments he has amassed in the years since, Sayre adds a top hat, mouse hands and feet to the tree so it resembles a larger-than-life Mickey Mouse. Sayre explained, “My family went to Disney World every year or two, starting when I was 4. By the time I was 18, I had been there about 10 times, so I feel like this is my special tree.”

“When I was growing up, [my mother would] put up a traditional tree in every room of our house. The house looked great.” Scott Sayre, homeowner

RIGHT Even the dock gets a tree decorated with festive lights at the Idylwood Shores home of Jeff Wetter and Scott Sayre. BELOW Clockwise from top left, a glowing globe tops the travel-themed tree in the lower-level game room; Wetter works in his home office, which includes a small tree decorated with ornaments from his alma mater, Virginia Tech; Mickey Mouse’s magician’s hat is perched atop the Disney-themed tree.

Sayre said the travel-themed tree is among his favorites because ot the happy moments it evokes from trips the couple has taken over the years to China, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, St. Maarten, Grenada, Canada and Alaska, among other destinations. The Chef Tree, in the open kitchen/great room, has no actual ornaments; everything on it is cooking gear, including a traditional chef’s hat which, naturally, is at the top. Garlands of mini-muffin papers encircle the branches. One of Sayre’s newer trees, it’s only in its second year. The Family Tree, a standard for many years, is decorated with framed photos of family members, as well as dogs – past and present. This tree is the only live cut tree and one of the last to be decorated. Trees put up in October need the staying power that artificial provides, Sayre explained. 20 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

The Virginia Tech Tree, one of the smaller ones, is located in Wetter’s home office. A retired dentist, Wetter received a Danbury Mint VT ornament each year from the employees at his dental practice in honor of his alma mater. Roanoke College, where Sayre earned a degree in music and business before embarking on a banking career, does not, so far, warrant its own tree. The Snow Buddies Tree sports pale blue and white snowmen amid blue and silver ornaments. The tree is white and looks striking against the deep blue walls of the bedroom where it is located.

The Monkey Tree is a tall palm tree with large monkey ornaments hanging from its branches. Calling it a Christmas tree might be a bit of a stretch, but it does emerge only for the season, and it does have white Christmas tree lights on it. Why monkeys? They are Scott’s favorite animal. The tree is in a bedroom decorated in a tropical theme. The Bar Tree, which sits on the bar in the home’s lower level, is festooned with ornaments that include miniature wine goblets, martini glasses, cocktail shakers and umbrella-topped tropical drink glasses. The Occupation Tree is small with special handblown ornaments from Germany, most of which were gifts from Wetter’s parents. The ornaments depict tools used in dentistry and hair styling, a nod to the three hair salon franchises the pair owns. The Silver Foil Tree evokes memories of the 1950s. Now considered an antique, Sayre bought

the tree, complete with ornaments, at Yellow Dog Antiques in Rocky Mount. He couldn’t find the large revolving colored light that typically accompanied such trees, so he has a mini version of it shining on his tree. Two Wilderness Trees are nestled next to the rustic lower-level fireplace. They are tall and thin, resembling real trees, and adorned with white lights and three climbing stuffed bears. They are the only trees that stay up all year, Sayre said. The Travel Tree, on a table in the lower-level game room, is encircled by luggage and topped with a globe. The tree is covered with ornaments the couple purchased on travels to China, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, the Bahamas, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, St. Maarten, Grenada, Canada and Alaska, among other destinations. Sayre first set up the tree in 2001 and said it is among his favorites because of the happy memories it evokes. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The Scuba Tree, which reflects a favorite travel activity, sits on a table in the great room to accommodate the high ceilings and put the ornaments at eye level. The tree is decorated with sea creatures, sand dollars, starfish, snorkels, fins, scuba flags and an ornament that includes a photo of Sayre and Wetter in dive gear. The Dock Tree, an artificial one with bows, is one of several outdoor trees decorated with festive lights. Because Sayre displays so many trees, one can’t help but wonder if he just covers them up and whisks them away to storage with all the ornaments in place. “No,” he said. “I break down the trees, take off the lights, pack everything neatly away and put the boxes in the attic. I redecorate each time they come out.”

ABOVE LEFT A boat ornament Wetter and Sayre purchased on a trip to Southwest Harbor, Maine, hangs on the Travel Tree. ABOVE The Monkey Tree, a palm located in a tropical-themed bedroom, is home to a Curious George ornament.

Plant Nanny uses a recycled wine bottle to water when you’re away Plant Nanny takes the worry out of keeping your containers watered with a simple system. A porous, terracotta stake set into the soil holds a wine bottle. Fill the bottle with water, set it in the stake and your job is done. One stake will distribute water in a pot up to 18 inches in diameter. Depending on how hot and dry it is, the water will last from two days to a week or more. Add a dose of natural liquid fertilizer, such as Drammatic K Earth Friendly Liquid Fish & Kelp, to the water and you can provide a gentle, constant supply of nutrients to your plants at the same time. Even when you’re home, this system ensures regular watering for your plants, distributed directly to the roots, which is a sure formula for healthier, more vigorous plants. The stakes also come in a smaller size designed for soda bottles. Also look for sets with blown glass spheres for insertion into the stakes. They are beautiful, decorative water vessels. Plant Nanny is available at nurseries and on amazon.com starting at $8.95 for a single terra-cotta stake, but vary by product.

Books to beguile A surprising number of succulents are cold-hardy, able to survive temperatures well below freezing, a fact that opens up for Virginia gardeners a world of intriguing plants, both in ground and in containers. “Debra Lee Baldwin’s Succulents Simplified: Growing, Designing, and Crafting with 100 Easy-Care Varieties” is a great starter reference. In addition to valuable information on growing and caring for succulents, the book is rich with ideas for container planting designs and craft projects using succulents. Check out the succulent topped pumpkin and the framed, living vertical garden ideas. $24.95

Biography, children’s literature, and gardening converge in Marta McDowell’s “Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children’s Tales.” McDowell interweaves Potter’s biography with descriptions of various important gardens in her life, describing each and establishing how they influenced her work. The book is rich with historic and contemporary photographs, as well as reproductions of Potter’s beloved illustrations and lesser-known botanical watercolors. Any Beatrix Potter fan planning a trip to Great Britain will want to study the chapter, “Visiting Beatrix Potter’s Gardens.” It’s a valuable roadmap for a Potter pilgrimage. $24.95

Photographer Robert Llewellyn reveals unexpected dimensions to flowers in his latest book, “Seeing Flowers: Discover the Hidden Life of Flowers.” Using an unusual photo process that includes stitching together large macro photographs so that the entire image is in full focus, Llewellyn reveals floral details that few have ever seen. They include the amazing architecture of stamens and pistils, the subtle shadings on a petal and the secret recesses of nectar tubes. Author Terri Dunn Chance’s accompanying essays about each flower family, as well as her photo captions, are rich with fascinating details about the floral kingdom. This is a gorgeous book that gardeners and non-gardeners would be delighted to receive. $29.95

Run rings around your weeds No longer does weeding have to damage your manicured hands and nails. Thanks to the ingenious Ring Weeder, you can effectively pull out small weeds, without digging your fingers into the ground. This simple, but indispensable tool features a small plastic fork that is slightly bowed to give you good purchase for burrowing underground and pulling up the weeds by the roots. The fork is attached to a ring that slips over your forefinger. Even when wearing gardening gloves, this appendage lets you get down to the roots and lever them up, making weeding a breeze. This simple but effective tool is the perfect stocking stuffer or hostess gift for gardening friends. Available at theringweeder.com for $7.99 plus $3 shipping.

Smart pots for smart gardeners Smart Pots are an inexpensive, versatile and practically foolproof way to grow plants in containers. Made of fabric, they provide needed air to the soil and excellent drainage. Roots stay cool, a plus on hot days when potted plants can become very stressed. In standard pots, mature plant roots grow in a death spiral circle around and around the pot’s perimeter; in the Smart Pot the roots are naturally air trimmed, allowing for a healthy root structure that never becomes pot bound. Plants are healthier, and you’ll be happier. Set the pots on paving or directly onto the ground. Consider putting one filled with herbs next to the kitchen door. Choose from sizes ranging from 1 to 400 gallons. Available at Blue Ridge Hydroponics & Home Brewing in Roanoke starting at $2.19 for a one-gallon pot.

Writer’s

KATHLEEN RIORdAN

“The mind of a writer can be a truly terrifying thing. Isolated, neurotic, caffeine-addled, crippled by procrastination, consumed by feelings of panic, self-loathing and soulcrushing inadequacy. And that’s on a good day.”

- Actor Robert De Niro during a speech at the 2014 Academy Awards

36 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

T

he image is familiar of the writer as a tortured soul, hunched over a keyboard or frantically scribbling on a yellow legal pad, unleashing some inner demon. And yet, despite the perception, many among us have dreamed of writing the Great American Novel. We envision pouring our hearts out onto the pages, stories mystically developing as characters speak to us from some nether region of our core being. As part of the artistic process, writers can be very particular about where they find their inspiration. Many have discovered that Smith Mountain Lake provides the perfect backdrop for feeding the creative writing muse. Writers possess a long and distinct history of being drawn to water as a source of inspiration. For example, the Lake District or commonly known as “The Lakes” is a mountainous region of

England famous for its association with early 19th Century poets such as William Wordsworth. Henry David Thoreau poetically described a lake as “the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.” It’s little surprise that Smith Mountain Lake, with its scenic shorelines and majestic, tree-covered mountain, has become a haven for fledgling writers, as well as established authors. “Writing at SML is a two-edged sword. It’s so beautiful with so many things to do that procrastination is easy, too easy,” noted New York Times best-selling author and part-time SML resident David Baldacci, whose latest book, “The Escape,” was released in November by Grand Central Publishing. “But the solitude and sheer beauty of the place can never fail to be inspirational.”

But, how does one begin? The ever-present writer’s block lurks in the shadows and writers can struggle with self-doubt and concerns centered on the great detractor: Is my writing any good? At Smith Mountain Lake, a community has evolved that offers encouragement and guidance for both seasoned and newbie writers.

You CAN Write

It’s 10 a.m. on the fourth Friday of August, which means the Lake Writers are assembling in the conference room at the Westlake Library. Founded in 2000, Lake Writers is a local chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. Lake Writers, which also meets on the second Friday of each month at the Moneta/ SML Library, is an eclectic group of poets, essayists, novelists and others who don’t quite fit into any one particular writing category. LEFT David Baldacci, a New York Times best-selling author and part-time SML resident, describes writing at the lake as a double-edged sword. “It’s so beautiful with so many things to do that procrastination is easy, too easy,” he says. BELOW The cover of “Voices from Smith Mountain Lake,” an anthology of SML-related poems, essays and short stories, published by Lake Writers in 2013

Lake Writers meetings are open and free to attend, intentionally designed to promote an atmosphere of inclusivity. Many of the introductions offered at the beginning of each gathering are humorous and reflect the spirit of those assembled around the table: “I see dead people.” “I kill people.” “I try to make people snort.” With a spirit of camaraderie, the group has created a safe place where writers can not only share their work, but also their fears about the writing process. Chuck Lumpkin and Becky Mushko loosely lead Lake Writers meetings with feeble attempts to keep the group on task. With such a creative bunch, the decorum does sometimes break down a bit. The primary purpose of the group is to offer critique for those at the meeting brave enough to share their latest creations. Advice always is offered through the lens of encouragement. Suggestions are offered as positive feedback as a means to improve a story, essay or poem. “Another plus is that Lake Writers members share warnings about publishing scams and help each other one-on-one with technical problems, query letters or manuscript formatting,” said Mushko, a Penhook resident. “Members also share how-to information. We’ve had workshops on using Microsoft Word, creating a blog and other things aspiring writers need to know.” At this particular gathering, James Morrison of Moneta is sharing his newly published novel, “Class of 1940: Coming of Age in World War II.” He circulates the book with its colorful cover depicting the contrast of a lovely farm scene juxtaposed with a black and white image of the D-Day invasion. “The Lake Writers, the Valley Writers in Roanoke, and the parent, statewide Virginia Writers Club are wonderful support groups for writers in this area,” said Morrison. “These groups offer help with the craft, host contests and writing projects, and provide all forms of encouragement, support and networking. “A word I associate especially with Lake Writers meetings is ‘fun,’ which helps explain why I have kept coming back for nearly 15 years.” Lake Writers also has developed group projects, including 2013’s “Voices from Smith Mountain Lake,” an anthology of stories, essays and poetry

With the holiday season upon us, writers have connected with venues in the lake area willing to promote and sell their books. The full literary process not only includes developing and publishing a manuscript, but also marketing the work and getting it into the hands of readers. These can be daunting tasks for newly published authors who might not be particularly comfortable with self-promotion. Luckily, the SML retail community has embraced its role in aiding and promoting local writing talent. Gifts Ahoy, at Bridgewater Plaza, a mainstay in the SML community for the past 25 years, also occasionally offers author book signings, such as a recent event featuring writer and veterinarian Bruce R. Coston and his book, “The Gift of Pets.” “We happily carry many local authors here at Gifts Ahoy,” said store manager Lesley Kocsis. “The writers find us; we don’t have to go looking for them. We are glad we can support the community and feature local talent.” Southern Roots, a gift and home décor store at Westlake Corner, is another venue that sells the work of local writers. Shoppers can find a large collection of books penned by local authors prominently displayed on a shelf at the front of the store.

“One of the hardest things for a local writer is finding an outlet for her books,” said Moneta resident Betsy Ashton, author of “Mad Max: Unintended Consequences,” and president of the Virginia Writers Club. “The lineup of gift shops around the lake has been so helpful in stocking and selling our books.” This holiday season, as you work to check off all those items on your holiday gift-giving list, consider that books by local authors make great presents for lake dwellers. And, if your New Year’s resolution includes writing that family history, memoir or novel, there is no better place than Smith Mountain Lake to find your muse.

Each month, SMAC offers an array of activities that support all types of artistic endeavors, including events that feature local writers. SMAC also offers $2,000 annually in college scholarships for those who demonstrate talent in the performing, visual or literary arts, as well as exhibit academic qualifications. This year’s winners were noted bluegrass musician Sage Wright from Franklin County High School and Julia Robertson, an artist from Staunton River High School.

ew renditions of classic songs such as “Greensleeves” and “Ukranian Bell Carol” will be available to enjoy this holiday season, thanks to the talents of David Stewart Wiley, music director and conductor of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Through gliding melodies and chiming chords, listeners of “Piano Bells” may pick up on the music’s particular sense of tranquility – a familiar feeling to many who live at or visit Smith Mountain Lake. 42 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

That’s because, when the maestro needs a recording studio for his projects, or a trustworthy sound engineer to capture the distinctive performances of the orchestra, he doesn’t seek it in cities such as New York or London. Instead, he opts for the calming influence of Blackwater Recording Studio in Wirtz and the capable skill of its owner, Harold Thompson. “Harold has been recording our symphony for 25 years,” said Wiley. “He was the [sound] engineer under the tenure of my predecessor, Victoria Vaughn,

and was my first choice to record the symphony. We could go anywhere in the world to record but we have a world-class engineer here in Wirtz, Virginia.” “Piano Bells” is Wiley’s first Christmas album and the seventh recording in partnership with Thompson. Included in the duo’s recordings is the orchestral score for Lake Effects, a 2011 movie developed and filmed at Smith Mountain Lake. “The fun thing about the recording process is I can take some wild chances, unlike a performance. In the studio you can go back and re-record anything that

After recording part of Wiley’s piano performance, Thompson (right) engineers the music in the control room at Blackwater Recording Studio. “Piano Bells” is the seventh recording the duo has worked on together.

doesn’t work. There’s freedom with it,” said Wiley, noting that Thompson’s engineering talent keeps the sound fresh, not over-produced or mechanical. It’s a skill not easy to come by, Wiley said, in even the best audio experts. “He really anticipates what his artists need and always makes myself and the symphony sound really, really good. He’s so good at what he does,” Wiley said. Becoming an accomplished engineer was a feat in and of itself when Thompson took an interest in the career in the early 1970s. At the time, technology was clunky, education nearly non-existent and his pursuits put on hold by a stint in the Vietnam War after he joined the Army. “I started doing this in 1972 and at that point there were no schools for audio engineering. The way people learned was just by diving in and figuring it out,” he said. “You have to learn a lot of things about music, electronics, physics and how sound behaves, which is basically acoustics.” 44 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Thompson’s music background is as a woodwinds player, commanding the clarinet, bassoon and saxophone. The rest, as he puts it, he had to scratch and claw and dig to learn. “I discovered I was a whole lot better at twisting knobs than blowing a horn,” said Thompson. “I started with an 8-track machine and have been through modular and digital devices and now computer recording.” Born and raised in Roanoke, Thompson said his parents purchased land at SML in 1965 before the lake reached full pond. The 7-acre property with 600 feet of shoreline went for $3,500. The family built a home on the property, and later Thompson and his wife, who have two daughters, built their home next door. Next came the studio Thompson had always wanted. “The opportunity to build here at the lake answered a dream of mine,” said Thompson. “One of my main goals was to build a space where the environment made people feel comfortable and relaxed to work in.”

ocal talent will take center stage when the Smith Mountain Lake Arts Council (SMAC) presents “Right in Our Backyard,” a coffeehouse-style concert featuring members of the Southwest Virginia Songrwriters Association (SVSA), on Dec. 5 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. Comprised of 50-60 songwriters – full-time professional musicians, part-time semi-pros and others who just write for fun and don’t perform – the SVSA represents a wide range of musical genres, including country, rock, jazz, Americana, blues and contemporary Christian. The group meets the fourth Friday of each month at 3rd Street Coffeehouse in Roanoke for socializing, educational workshops and lively critique sessions with members providing feedback verbally on the spot and later in writing. At least six members live at Smith Mountain Lake and often ride-share to meetings. “It’s not easy to subject your work to close scrutiny from 20 or more of your peers, but it always results in a better song,” said Mike DeGiorgi, a guitarist, songwriter, SVSA member and chairman of SMAC’s special events committee, which is organizing the Dec. 5 event. At the concert, original tunes will be performed by several musicians, including: Greg Trafidlo A seasoned performer who has played and written with the likes of Tom Paxton and other folk heavyweights and recorded multiple 46 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

CDs in solo and with the popular group “TriFolkal.” Trafidlo’s songs have a country/Americana bent, DeGiorgi said. Cleverly rhymed, they’re often humorous and showcase innovative guitar-playing techniques. Marc Baskind Said DeGiorgi: “Perhaps one of the best guitarists in the Roanoke area, Marc performs more than anyone I know, writes very catchy songs that Marc Baskind showcase his skill as a guitarist and has recorded several CDs. He majored in tuba in college.” Mike Franke A software developer for GE and martial arts black belt, Franke is a blues player who writes insightful and funny commentary. He’ll play “Tombstone News,” a humorous number cowritten with DeGiorgi. Mike Franke David Simpkins A veteran of several Radford-based bands who now has a successful solo career, Simpkins said he’s inspired by Roy Orbison and Bruce Springsteen, who can be heard in his music. A graphic designer at Virginia Tech, Simpkins often performs with his David Simpkins wife, Kathy Acosta, as well as Greg Trafidlo and Britt Mistele, known as “David Simpkins and the KGB.” Simpkins has recorded several CDs.

Fall in Love with SML Call me today!

Mike Pearell Pearell’s songs are loaded with great imagery and his guitar playing is reminiscent of the late Buddy Holly, according to DeGiorgi. “You’re gonna love seeing this guy perform,” he said. Larry Sakayama SVSA president, a member of “The Panini Brothers,” luthier, photographer, and SMAC webmaster, Sakayama’s songs usually have “a lot of air in them,” DeGiorgi said, meaning he doesn’t overload them with lyrics. His melodies, though, are complex and often jazz-infused.

Fit & Healthy A guide to wellness At smith mountAin lAke

Since Laker Magazine introduced its first wellness guide two years ago, the healthcare sector at Smith Mountain Lake has continued to grow, responding and adjusting to the ever-changing needs of area residents and tourists. In this installment of Fit & Healthy, we look at a new $24-million medical facility in Gretna that will provide preventative and emergency care to the region, offering a convenient alternative in particular to those who live on the south side of the lake. A guide to area health service providers in the SML region follows on Page 55. Each issue of Laker Magazine will continue to include local stories relating to health, fitness and nutrition. If you have story ideas to share, please email them to editor@smithmountainlaker.com.

entra Health’s new Gretna Medical Center, a 50,000-square-foot facility costing nearly $24 million, will open on Dec. 15 and provide access to numerous new critical healthcare

services. “The new Gretna Medical Center models Centra’s vision of expanded services,” said facility administrator Shannon Knight. “In addition to Gretna, this facility will support the southeastern section of Franklin County and Smith Mountain Lake with quite a few additional healthcare services and open 80 new jobs.” The center will offer an emergency room, full core laboratory, expanded physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation gym, specialty clinic, wellness programs, helipad and 24-hour ambulance on site. An imaging center will include a 64-slice CT scanner, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, bone density, mammography and two digital diagnostic X-ray rooms. Knight said healthcare is trending toward preventative care. Companies are intentionally moving services previously found primarily in hospitals into primary care offices where patients can receive the specialized care they need before it becomes an emergency situation. “Healthcare is an industry in transition,” said Knight. “Our new healthcare delivery model focuses on reducing expenditures by improving efficiency

within our delivery system. Our success will no longer be measured by providing high volumes of profitable services; instead we will coordinate within all services of the healthcare organization with the overall goal of improving quality outcomes, utilization and the patient experience.” Dr. Alex Wilgus, a family physician who has practiced in the Gretna community for four years, will become director of the medical center. He said the facility Shannon Knight will accommodate two major needs his patients face. “One of the biggest issues here has been access,” Wilgus said. “For every patient that I see regularly, there are always several more who don’t have the resources to be seen or are prevented from being seen for other reasons. The new center will put more affordable, specific medical services closer to community members and should help those people get the regular preventative care they need.” The second need it will meet is emergency services, he said. “Quicker access to emergency services will be a tremendous improvement. Before, patients had to go to Danville or Lynchburg for that, which is a little far away,” he said.

An architectural rendering shows how the exterior of Centra Health’s new Gretna Medical Center will look when complete. The facility is slated to open on Dec. 15.

Knight said for some Smith Mountain Lake residents, this means instead of a 30-minute drive to larger city hospitals, patients can get to the Gretna center in half the time. But she said she hopes the increase in continuity of care services at the facility will decrease Dr. Alex Wilgus the community’s need for emergency services. “Our model is changing from an illness-based model to a preventative care model. The ultimate goal is to see more community members living healthy, productive lives,” said Knight. No one is more eager to receive help achieving that goal than area residents. “The intensity of interest in the community has really surprised me,” Wilgus said. “My patients have been following the progress for more than

a year now, showing up for meetings and events. They are really excited to have it open.” The Gretna Medical Center’s grand opening ceremony, which will include building tours, is scheduled for Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. Knight said once the building is open and running, Centra will consider opportunities to further expand it by 20 percent. “There has been and continues to be a positive outpouring of comments and support regarding this new facility. We are grateful and humbled by all of it,” she said. “Centra feels blessed to be able to continue to provide healthcare to the Gretna and Smith Mountain Lake areas.” Gretna Medical Center is located at 1220 W. Gretna Road, near the intersection Virginia 40 and U.S. 29. Starting on Dec. 15, it will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Wednesday when hours are 8 a.m.-7 p.m.) On Saturday, hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (434) 656-1274 or visit gretna.centrahealth.com.

H e a l t h y p a r k s, healthy people Carilion Clinic teamed up with Booker T. Washington National Monument this year to offer Walk and Talk, a monthly program that combines a nature walk and health presentation. Free and open to the public, the initiative has included topics such as stress, sleep, cardiovascular disease and nutrition. “We’ve tried to mix it up with different health professionals leading the topics,” said Gail Nordhaus, Carilion’s community outreach coordinator, explaining that each program includes an easy walk along the 1 ½-mile Jack O’Lantern Branch Trail with stops along the way for discussion. “We’ve had participants from toddlers to retirees. We’ve had bird watchers and master gardeners. It’s an interesting mix from the community, which makes the walk more interesting and enjoyable.” Part of the Healthy Parks, Healthy People initiative of the National Park Service and supported by an Active Trails grant from the National Park Foundation, the program is designed to get more people into Booker T.

Washington National Monument to exercise and enjoy nature, according to park ranger Janet Blanchard. The final Walk and Talk of this season will take place on Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. Nordhaus said a Carilion physical therapist will lead discussion about the mechanics of walking and best practices for preventing injury. Walkers also will celebrate with a healthy lunch and T-shirts will be awarded to those who have participated in at least one other time with the group. Those who participated in all but one walk will be awarded free movie tickets donated by Carilion.

Gail Nordhaus

Plans are already in the works to start the program back up again next April. “We’re hoping it will continue to grow,” Nordhaus said. “We want to attract more families and anyone in the community interested in wellness.” For more information, call Blanchard at 721-2094. – Andie Gibson

Glenda Wynne (left) and husband Brett Keister, who own and operate VitaZen and the Centre at Vitazen yoga studio, promote Small Business Saturday as a way to encourage SML residents to shop local.

T

his holiday season, twinkling lights on Christmas trees around the Smith Mountain Lake region won’t be the only things to shine. On Nov. 29, the holiday shopping spotlight will be on SML’s small businesses and local retailers around the country with the fourth installment of Small Business Saturday. A holiday shopping event conceived by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which provide benefit primarily to big-box and e-commerce stores. Small Business Saturday takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and is designed to encourage shoppers to patronize businesses that are small and local. Brett Keister, owner of VitaZen, a health and

wellness store at Westlake, has promoted the event in the past and said he hopes it will give his holiday sales an early boost this year. “Small business owners like me are the ones that actually live in the community and want it to prosper the most,” Keister said. “When less money leaves the community, it is good for everyone.” Pam Bryant, who recently purchased The Little Gallery, said promotion for Small Business Saturday helps consumers remember small retailers as they’re checking off items on their gift lists. “It’s the perfect time of year to have a day like this because people are shopping for gifts, and the malls are so busy that smaller local stores have a stronger appeal,” said Bryant. “The event also lands on the weekend we usually have Santa [visit Bridgewater Plaza], so it has become a double attraction.”

BELOW Joanna Hudzik, coowner of Haywood’s Jewelers at Westlake Towne Center, says one of the best things about the event is listening to customers share the reasons they enjoy shopping locally.

66 November • December 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Joanna Hudzik, co-owner of Haywood’s Jewelers, which moved to larger quarters at Westlake Towne Center in October, said she’s excited about how much the response to Small Business Saturday has grown over the years. “My business model is I want to do all I can to give back to the community that I live and work in. Small businesses are the ones that are donating back into their own communities,” she said. “The more we support the businesses that are here, the more conveniences we’ll have here.” Keister said while customer response to the event has grown, there is still room for improvement. “I would like to see more businesses at the lake participate, because the more that participate, the less likely people are to leave the lake to do their shopping elsewhere,” he said. “Customer awareness is good, but businesses have to take advantage of the date as well.” Hudzik said one of the best parts about Small Business Saturday is that it provides business owners a special kind of holiday cheer. “It’s a refreshing day because we get a very verbal group of customers saying they’re excited we’re here, telling us why they’re supporting us and that they recognize the importance of shopping local,” Hudzik said. “As a local merchant, it makes you feel good.”

Gift ideas for Libation Lovers Story

When it comes to holiday presents or host/hostess gifts, wine is always a great go-to choice. But if you’re interested in branching out beyond the standard bottle, there are a bevy of gift items available – including distinctive ones for sale at Smith Mountain Lake-area retailers and wineries – that enthusiasts of beer, wine and spirits are sure to enjoy.

Gordon Kendall

1} Virginia Wine of the Month Club

2) Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club

If you’re shopping for someone who likes Virginia wine, consider a gift membership to the Virginia Wine of the Month Club. Wine and an informative newsletter are shipped to the recipient each month. There are no dues, only the price of the wines, and the selections can be tailored to the tastes of the recipient. Wines are selected based on quality and some are often hard to find. The cost is $24.99 for one bottle, $39.99 for two bottles, $52.99 for three bottles or $65.99 for four bottles. Combinations of up to eight bottles per month are available. Appropriate sales tax also is added. vawineclub.com

For the beer connoisseur on your list, consider the Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. The craft beer scene has exploded in recent years and membership in the club is an opportunity to try new and creative styles. Choices offered include those brewed nationally and internationally and rare beers. For example, the U.S. Microbrewed Club includes three bottles each of four selections for a total of 12 bottles. Tasting notes and pairing selections are included. The cost is $24.95 per month, plus $15 for shipping and handling. The import and rare clubs are a bit more expensive. beermonthclub.com

3) Sunken City Merchandise Sunken City Brewing Company is a great place to pick up gift items at SML. The brewery offers Dam Lager, Red Clay IPA, Brown Porter and seasonal brews. The brewery uses environmentally friendly cans, which use less energy to ship than glass bottles and protect the beer from the damaging effects of light. T-shirts, hoodies, glasses and other items with the Sunken City logo also are available. Another fun gift idea is a growler – a gallon ($15) or half gallon ($10) brown glass jug that can be purchased filled with beer. The cost to fill a growler with one of Sunken City’s brews is $13 for the half gallon and $23 for the gallon. When the growler is empty, your loved one can return to Sunken City for a refill or to try a different style of beer. sunkencitybeer.com

4) Sparkling Wine Sealers Some folks do not finish a bottle of wine or bubbly at one time and are faced with the dilemma of how best to preserve it. Champagne offers a special challenge because the sparkling wine will soon become flat if the bottle is not sealed securely. Capa Bubbles is a new sealing system that features a threaded ring that attaches to the neck of the bottle below the flange, along with a screw cap that can be tightened down to create a secure seal. When you are ready to drink the rest of the bubbly, simply unscrew the cap, the top of which is emblazoned with tasteful designs or slogans. The product is available at Gifts Ahoy at Bridgewater Plaza for under $20. giftsahoyfudge.com

5) Wine Stopper Candles

7) A Sampling of Cigars

If you have a pretty wine bottle that you would hate to throw away after finishing the wine, The General Store on Scruggs Road has Tag Wine Stopper Cork Candles that turn an empty wine bottle into an attractive candlestick. A set of four in a gift pack tied with raffia sells for $11.99.

Ramulose Ridge Winery in Moneta has the distinction of being on the Virginia Wine and Cigar Trail. The winery sells Panacea cigars, a high-quality smoke noted for burning cool and having rich and spicy flavors. Ramulose Ridge offers wine pairings for various styles of cigars. Four cigar sampler packs are available from $34 and up. You may also want to check out the “Moonshine Jar,” a mason jar filled with an assortment of 13 cigars for $83, an exceptional gift if there’s a cigar aficionado on your list.

6) Upcycled Wine Bottles The gift shop at Hickory Hill Vineyards and Winery, tucked inside the Moneta establishment’s circa-1923 restored farmhouse, offers a wide range of wine-related items, including art, ornaments, cocktail napkins, books, apparel and accessories. Owner Wendy Furrow-Scott says cheese boards made from recycled wine bottles are particularly popular. Melted flat and hand-painted by former Bedford artist Linda Exley, each board is unique and sells for $19.95. smlwine.com

8) Hand-Painted Wine Glasses The Little Gallery at Bridgewater Plaza, which specializes in the works of local and regional artists, offers hand-painted wine glasses that are a step above ordinary. Roanoke artist Walt Hodges has painted glasses that feature bunches of purple or white grapes depicted on them ($64/pair). Glasses featuring an SML scene (pictured left, $28) also are available from regional artist Sherry Barefoot. Other painted glasses pair with Nancy Blankenship’s pottery, including appetizer plates with a notch that holds the glass, leaving one hand free for eating. thelittlegallerysml.com

9) A Medley at Brooks Mill There are so many charming items available at Wirtz-based Brooks Mill Winery, known for its fruit wines, that it’s hard to pick just one. Stop by to see the family-run operation’s collection of stemless wine glasses, water bottles, beverage napkins, magnets, cork cages, cork key chains, decorative bottle stoppers, candles, wine glass markers, wooden ornaments and trinket boxes, kitchen towels, garden flags, and painted wine and shot glasses. brooksmillwine.com

10) Christmas Ornaments Wine-related Christmas ornaments always make great gifts. In the tasting room at White Rock Vineyards and Winery in Goodview you’ll find distinctive holiday ornaments ($12.50 each) featuring an angel, reindeer or a sleigh that include a small cage designed to hold the cork you have removed from your favorite wine. whiterockwines.com

11) Apparel & Accessories Bedford’s Peaks of Otter Winery, which specializes in a vast array of fruit-flavored wines, is well stocked with a variety of gift ideas, some of which are beyond what you would expect at a winery. Peaks of Otter offers sports accessories emblazoned with the winery’s logo. Among the selections are Oakley billed caps for $30, a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls for $16, a bucket hat for $42 and a five-pack of clay composite poker chips for $10. peaksofotterwinery.com

12) Perfectly Paired Chocolate Many hosts and hostess enjoy concluding a holiday dinner by pairing wine and chocolate, which can be tricky. Southern Roots, a new gift shop on Scruggs Road, offers a solution to this dilemma called Brix, chocolate in four flavors formulated to pair with specific types of wine. The chocolate ($6 per box) comes in the form of a block and can be chipped off with a knife on a wooden board. Each chocolate flavor lists the type of wine it is meant to pair with, and the packaging allows you to hang the box on a bottle of wine. For tips and pairing ideas, visit brixchocolate.com.

Cheers!

uring a 30-year career at the Pentagon, Jim Morrison authored countless studies and papers related to international relations and Army intelligence, along with two books he readily admits are real snoozers. “Keep this on your bedside if you need help falling asleep,” he said, referring to “Vladimir Zhirinovsky: An Assessment of a Russian UltraNationalist.” But in 1995, after trading the stress of the Beltway for the soothing shores of Betty’s Creek, Morrison was ready to tackle new writing challenges that would appeal to a broader audience. He published the historical drama “Bedford Goes to War” in 1999, turning it into a book in 2004. It sold more than 3,000 copies, was nominated for the 2005 Library of Virginia Literary Awards and was selected as one of five finalists for a People’s Choice Award. Morrison’s latest work, “Class of 1940: Coming of Age in World War II,” is his first attempt at a

The Silver Star By Jeannette Walls Set in 1970, “The Silver Star” centers on the lives of narrator Bean Holladay, 12, her older sister, Liz, and their whackedout mother, Charlotte, who abandons the girls to pursue a singing career. The resourceful sisters show up unannounced at the home of their uncle, who lives in a small Virginia town rife with racial tension. The girls form a relationship with the unscrupulous foreman at the town mill, which results in tragedy and violence. While not as captivating as Walls’ memoir, “The Glass Castle,” I found this a quick and enjoyable read. — Lori O’Connell, Moneta

The Auschwitz Escape By Joel C. Rosenberg This compelling and emotional book set in Nazi Germany revolves around Jacob Weisz, a shy Jewish boy whose life is changed dramatically when he finds himself part of the Jewish Resistance movement. After a raid goes horribly wrong, Jacob finds himself trapped, part of Adolf Hitler’s “final solution” at Auschwitz. He plots to find a way out to alert the world to the barbaric actions of the Nazis. Though difficult to read at times, I found “The Auschwitz Escape” gripping. — Mary Kuhn, Moneta

novel. He describes it as a story of adventure, service, heroism, sacrifice and love. Set in fictional Halesford County in Southwest Virginia, the book follows several high school graduates at home and on the battlefields as they begin their lives against the backdrop of war. “I had written short stories, but was ready for the challenge of writing a novel,” he said. “I also wanted to share information about Bedford and World War II with people who wouldn’t read non-fiction.” “Bedford Goes to War” and “Class of 1940” may be purchased online through amazon.com. They’re also available through the public library systems in Bedford and Franklin counties.

The Other Boleyn Girl By Philippa Gregory Those who enjoy tales of ambition, intrigue, love and sex interwoven with historic events (think John Jakes’ “North and South”) will find “The Other Boleyn Girl” entertaining. The novel focuses on little-known Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne, who comes to the glamorous 16th Century English court at the age of 14. Driven by their family’s ruthless ambition, the sisters pursue the affection of King Henry VIII – one driven by true affection and the other with her sights set on becoming queen. Gregory makes no bones about the fact that her book is fiction, based on historical events. While a little long and somewhat repetitive, I enjoyed it, as did the majority of the members of my book club. — Andie Gibson

y mama always says you can discern a lot about a fella from your first visit to the place where he lives. Is he a neat freak or super slob? Are the walls covered in “GO RED SOX!” paraphernalia? Can you tell what he had for dinner last night by what’s left in the sink? So, it was with great interest that I entered future hubby’s apartment 17 years ago. Would this guy be a keeper or would I be backing slowly toward the exit, almost certain I was dating an ax murderer? Crossing the front-door threshold and into the kitchen/dining room area, nothing initially set off any alarms. Sink clean: check. Bills stacked neatly on the counter: check. So far, so good. But then I came around the corner and there it was – perched in the living room bay window, decorated with bright multi-colored twinkle lights and tinsel, was a 7-foot artificial Christmas tree. It was May. Now, many will say I entered into marriage with Hubs in possession of full knowledge that he is a crazed connoisseur of all things Christmas. It’s true, I have little room to maneuver or complain about the two dozen Santas he drags out of our basement storage area each December to be artfully placed throughout the house. I have had to put my foot down and declare that two trees to decorate are more than enough – a tree in every room is overkill. But, you’re right. I knew he was this way when I married him, so I shouldn’t grumble. However…

When we purchased our second home at Smith Mountain Lake, it was with absolute intention that its main purpose would be for relaxing. Hubs gets to boat and fish and I get to read and write and make margaritas. With this in mind, you can imagine my surprise last December when, as we perused the beautiful holiday décor at Trocadero, Hubs wondered aloud if the tree at the lake house should have multicolored or white lights. Bursting into tears and running from the store may have been a wee bit of an over-reaction on my part. Being the intelligent man that he is, Hubs did not bring up the subject again. He did what all good sensible spouses do: he sic’d the kid on me. “Geez, Mom, what’s the big deal? It’s just a tree - nothing else. We’ll take care of everything. You promise to stay away, REALLY stay away, and we’ll do all the decorating. Pleeeezzeeeee…..?” Well, damn, what’s a girl to do? I yielded, and the boys took over. I was shooed out of the house, and when I returned, was greeted with what you get when you leave the men folk in charge. There, teetering precariously in the corner of our beautiful, open, two-story sunroom, stood a 12-foot, pre-lit tree. The top tip was within inches of the vaulted ceiling. The lights were so bright, I was sure our neighbors across the lake at Bernard’s Landing could see them. The only things in the room bigger than the tree were the smiles on the faces of my son and hubby. “Well, Mom, you said we could be in charge.” Yes, yes I did. This year, I’m trying to hold the battle line, but the troops are pushing forward: “Come on Mom, just one little ‘ol string of outdoor lights.” Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was in Love with a Short Man Once: And Other Tales from a Crazy Southern Irish Gal.” Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
