Luckily, that last part hasn’t changed. But things definitely are different than they were 23 years ago. Back then, there was one small grocery store (Shoprite), limited medical facilities and slim choices when it came to dining. Heck, there wasn’t even a stoplight at the intersection of Route 122 and Scruggs Road.

There also was no established local magazine. That changed in 2000 when new SML resident Micah Gaudio called and asked if I would help him get one off the ground. I had just quit my job at The Roanoke Times to stay home with my new baby boy and wasn’t particularly interested in a fledgling publication, but Micah was persistent and I agreed.

Jack and Karen Phillips, Sheridan Brown and John Crawford, all of Moneta, traveled to Ireland and Scotland in October. The couples posed for this photo at Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, by Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland. Jack Phillips, who plays and teaches bagpipes, reunited with an old friend and fellow bagpiper at the castle, which dates back to the late 7th century.

In September, Drew Moser and Leanna Daniel of Elon, North Carolina, took the Laker with them on a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where Drew’s brother is a cast member. “We really enjoyed the roller coasters, light show on Cinderella’s castle and the performances, but I would have to say the food and wine festival was everyone’s favorite,” said Leanna.

In July, Steve Payne and Holly Bastian of Moneta took the Laker to Iceland to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple visited Jokulsarlon (a glacier lake), snorkeled in 34-degree water between the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America and chartered a small plane for an aerial tour of the country. The trip concluded at the Blue Lagoon (pictured above), a geothermal hot spring known for its therapeutic qualities.

Nancy and Nat Ostroff took grandson Jonah, 11, on a fishing trip last summer to Whalers Cove Lodge in Angoon, Alaska. The family netted 300 pounds of salmon, halibut and cod, which they had frozen and shipped back to their home in Huddleston. “A lot of it later found its way to other freezers in the neighborhood,” said Nat.

Del and Pat Bailey of Moneta celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary aboard the River Harmony, sailing from Amsterdam to Vienna. They posed for this shot while on the Danube River. “The ship travels through 66 locks on its journey,” said Pat. “The scenery is beautiful and the experience wonderful!”

Twins Laurie Shull and Terry Berner, who both have vacation homes in Moneta, traveled to Las Vegas in May where they showed off the Laker at The Mirage hotel and casino with the Venetian in the background.

To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Sandy (holding magazine) and Don Kelso (far left) of Moneta took their family to Hawaii in July. They visited sites of historical, scientific and familial importance on three islands, including the Univeristy of Hawaii, where Don studied marine ecology from 1965 to 1970. A highlight of the trip was visiting with former SML neighbors Mary and Steve Roland at their home on the slopes of Haleakala. After taking this photo, the Kelsos passed their Laker on to the Rolands.

Joan and Ron Hamlin of Moneta traveled to Alaska in July where they took this shot in Denali National Park. The vacation also included stops in Fairbanks, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. “This was a wonderful trip,” Joan said. “We saw so much beauty and met so many nice people.”

In April, Mary and Stephen Campbell of Moneta traversed Vietnam, starting in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and traveling through Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue and Ha Long Bay to Hanoi. The highlight of the trip, Stephen said, was sailing in a junk on Ha Long Bay (pictured), where more than 3,000 steep islands extend through the Bay of Tonkin to the coast of China.

nyone who has built a house knows the staggering number of decisions that must be made. Small choices involve picking drawer pulls, paint colors and window styles, while bigger selections deal with flow of space, maximizing views and placement of kitchen appliances. Many times in the process, homeowners are left wondering if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be happy with the results.

Sue and Bill Partsch got an uneasy feeling shortly after the foundation was poured and the framing was going up for their home on the shores of the upper Roanoke River channel. Sue said she believed the home just wasn’t coming together as the couple had hoped. She was having second thoughts about the Colonial design with separate rooms and furniture to complement the style, but didn’t know where to turn for help.

She found the answer in John and Theresa Dorlini, certified interior designers and owners of Circle Design Studio in Roanoke. “Theresa got me from the get-go,” Sue said. “She looked at me and my clothes and said, ‘You like the color gray and a contemporary look. And look at your chunky jewelry with pops of bright color.’ She came back with a mood board of colors and ideas for changing the flow of the house. She absolutely nailed it.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

John Dorlini took the original floor plan and modified it to better suit the homeowners’ needs and affinity for entertaining. “Our kitchen really is the gathering place when we entertain family and friends,” she said. “The kitchen that John and Theresa designed was spot on with our vision. Placing the cooktop so that we can enjoy the lake view as we cook, providing ample counter space, having a bar and prep sink and the custom-designed island makes this room one of our favorites.” The kitchen area includes an architectural table, Caesar stone countertops and an island of white quartz. It opens to the living area, which the Dorlinis also reworked. The original plan called for a fireplace flanked by bookshelves, but the Partsches opted for a sleeker, more modern look with an off-center fireplace and bench seating. Other design touches include an oversized ottoman, contemporary recliners and a TV that can be seen from anywhere in the room. “In listening to the clients, we understood how they would use the space for family TV watching, entertaining guests and enjoying relaxing views of the lake over wine,” John Dorlini said. “By eliminating the bookshelves and experimenting

with the fireplace location, we found a truly custom solution that met the Partsches’ desires for less visual clutter and dusting, while finding a home for the TV that was installed at their seated eye level as opposed to above the mantle.” Additional changes were made to improve functionality and aesthetics in the master suite. The area originally had four doors, but the Dorlinis eliminated two by reconfiguring the plan to move the closets adjacent to the bathroom. Doing so provided a better wall against which to place the bed, which features a headboard built from reclaimed wood. “I love the reconfigured master suite,” Sue said. “It is so peaceful and relaxing. Waking up to the beautiful lake view makes it feel like we are on vacation year-round.” The spacious and contemporary master bathroom features a distinctive mirror setup with subtle back lighting, trough sink, floating cabinets, soaking tub

and a powder room that could be converted to an elevator in the future. With two extra bedrooms upstairs and one on the lake level, the home features ample room for guests. When family and friends aren’t congregating in the great room or kitchen area, they’re hanging out on the patio or by the pool, Sue said. “We had people and events here all summer – a 50th anniversary party, a bridal shower, a bachelorette party, a church retreat and a teacher party,” said Sue, who teaches kindergarten in Roanoke. “I can’t say enough good things about Circle Design Studio,” Sue said. “We hired them after our design/build project had begun, and they came in with extreme professionalism. They worked well with the architect/builder, providing him with all the drawings, elevations and source lists he required. Their emails with me, the builder and sub-contractors were prompt, and they addressed any issues that arose.”

Many people use the terms interior designer and decorator interchangeably, but there are significant differences between the two. Interior design, according the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), “follows a systematic course — including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process — to satisfy the client’s needs and resources and create functional spaces within a building. Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability.” ASID defines interior decorating as “the furnishing

Designer vs. Decorator or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things.” Virginia and other states have laws requiring interior designers to be licensed and to document their formal education and training. States also require practicing interior designers to earn NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) certification to demonstrate experience and qualification. The certification involves a three-part exam. In addition, a work experience mentorship must be completed. By contrast, becoming an interior decorator requires no formal training or licensing. – Ferne Hale

In October, the Partsch project earned Circle Design Studio first place in the category of residences more than 3,500 square feet at the Interior Design Excellence Awards. The competition is hosted by the Virginia and West Virginia chapters of the American Association of Interior Designers. “We were very excited to win an award among projects submitted by the best designers around the state. The judges commented on how the minimal changes to the floor plan had an impressive impact on the overall space. The end result is amazing despite our involvement so late in the construction process,” Dorlini said.

What started as a way to spruce up an old house has become an intimate family tradition spanning three homes and three decades.

hen it comes to curb appeal, it’s difficult to top the lakeside home of Wayne and Angie Epperly. There’s the well-manicured lawn, polished landscaping and lovely view of Smith Mountain Lake. But the home’s real show-stopper? It’s definitely the porch. More than just a casual spot to relax on a mild SML evening, the Epperly porch is a charming outdoor oasis, an extension of the home that Angie tends with loving care. Extensive yet tasteful decorations rotate throughout the year, keeping neighbors in The Waterfront wondering what’s coming next. But for the Epperly family, the porch represents so much more.

The tradition started 34 years ago when, as newlyweds, Wayne and Angie Epperly bought a little fixer-upper in Roanoke. “It was in bad shape,” Angie recalled, “but it had a porch. And I thought, if I decorate it, that will help.” She started at Christmas, adorning the stoop with festive ribbon and ornaments. But when the holiday season was over and the colorful decorations put away, the bare porch returned to its dreary state. A few weeks later, Angie came up with a plan, pulling some of the Christmas decorations back out and adding heart-shaped embellishments for Valentine’s Day.

“And it snowballed from there,” she said with a laugh. In 1995, the Epperlys moved to a new home on four acres in Roanoke County. It was large enough to accommodate their growing family, which now included two young boys, and had a huge wraparound porch. “It was on that porch we read the paper, the kids played and if there was an issue or problem, we would say, ‘Take it to the porch.’ We would go out on the porch and sit in the swing and discuss it away from the distractions of TVs, video games or the phone,” she said. “There were many celebrations held on that porch – birthday parties, showers, prom photos and graduation celebrations. We not only celebrated seasons and holidays, more importantly, we celebrated life.” Wayne Epperly also described the porch as the goto spot for family meetings or one-on-one talks. “It provided an entry point for discussions – good, bad or indifferent,” he said.

ON TO THE LAKE

Five years ago, the Epperlys decided to move to Smith Mountain Lake to begin life as empty-nesters. The couple had several criteria when hunting for their new home: It needed to be on the water, in a friendly community and, of course, include a porch. “We wanted a home that created an atmosphere centered around family and friends,” Wayne Epperly said. “Before, we were more secluded. This house is different because we’re in a neighborhood and the porch is a way for us to interact and meet new people. So many have walked by and said, ‘I love what you’ve done with the porch,’ and we’ll strike up a conversation.” Angie said she switches out the decorations 8-9 times per year, developing themes around holidays and seasons. Favorite standards include spring, Independence Day, Halloween and Christmas, but she throws in new motifs, as well. In the summer of 2013, she created a Hawaiian luau theme to complement a large party the couple hosted for family.

Want to try? Add pizazz to your porch with these decorating tips. 1. Choose decorations that can be used multiple times. For example, select a red ribbon you like and utilize it for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Fourth of July.

5. Buy electric lights and candles with a timer to save energy and avoid having to go outside in the cold to turn them on and off.

2. Develop a theme to make decorating easier. Holidays and seasons work well, but any hobby or interest you have can be turned into a theme.

6. Work with odd numbers to provide more visual interest.

3. Stock up on items when they go on sale after a holiday to use the following year. Look for coupons, too, particularly from craft stores like Michael’s and AC Moore. 4. Don’t restrict yourself to craft stores. Consignment shops and antique stores also are great places for decorating finds.

“Although our sons are grown now and our porch at the lake is much smaller, it still gets decorated for every season and holiday,” said Angie, who honed her skills working at Steger Creek, a home décor store in Roanoke. “It’s something I enjoy doing, and that makes it a plus. … My neighbors stop and ask, ‘What’s next?’ It’s so fun. It’s like therapy.” Wayne said the assistance he provides with sons Ryan, 27, and Landon, 22, is limited to carrying meticulously labeled containers up from a lowerlevel storage area and occasionally hanging lights and banners. Credit for the porch’s panache goes completely to his wife, he said. “It is truly her gift and my sons and I have been blessed by that gift, her time and dedication,” he said. “It has been a wonderful tradition for our family.”

mith Mountain Lake is one of the cleanest bodies of water on the East Coast, but development around the lake and nearby watershed areas is putting the lake’s water purity at risk. Fortunately, there is much local homeowners can do to protect this valuable resource. According to the Smith Mountain Lake Association, an organization that advocates for best practices related to the lake’s watershed, one of the major sources of SML pollutants is water runoff from gardens and farms. Fertilizers and other garden chemicals used by the thousands of people who live within the lake watershed area, as well as silt and animal waste, all leach into the lake. The problem is intensified when homeowners strip the land along their shoreline of all or most of its natural vegetation – often planting a lawn right down to the water’s edge in its place. Lawns extending to the shore are bad for the lake for several reasons. Keeping it lush and green requires fertilizer, which exacerbates potential pollution. And because grass roots are relatively shallow, they are not very effective at filtering unwanted chemicals.

butterflies and birds while adding to the beauty of the waterfront view.” Some may balk at the idea of planting trees near the water because they may obscure an uninterrupted water view. In fact, trees are wonderful because, if positioned well, they frame the view and add an additional dimension and depth to the scene, actually enriching the view line. In addition, trees provide privacy. Looking at the lake through a filter of trees is wonderful; being fully exposed to every boater who happens by is not so nice.

What to Plant

In contrast, a buffer planting of trees, shrubs and perennials along the shore will have a positive effect on the lake water quality. The SMLA website explains: “The buffer [planting] acts as a filter for runoff, catching sediment, debris and pollutants before it reaches the water. The plant roots hold the soil, slowing erosion and thus helping water clarity and protecting aquatic habitat. Trees and shrubs near the water’s edge help shade the water, keeping temperatures cooler and improving the habitat for amphibians, fish and other aquatic life. The best choices for shoreline plants are those native to the region. They tend to be deep-rooted (as much as 3-8 feet) so they are superb filtering agents and also help to stabilize the shoreline, serving as living rip-rap. In general, native plants require less maintenance and supplementary water once established, so they are easy to care for. However, any plant, whether foreign, national or native, is better than lawn. If roses and daylilies are your thing, plant them. The palette of available native plants, including many that have showy flowers, is extensive and attractive, so a buffer garden does not have to look like a weedy mess. Nor should it block your view to the water. Create a design so the buffer planting frames your water view, adding depth and everchanging seasonal interest. On a level lot, there may be a tree or shrub that obscures a portion of the view, but that can enhance the overall effect, creating patterns, silhouettes and filtered glimpses of water. A diversity of plant materials both adds to the beauty and interest of your property, as well as reduces the risk of a pest or disease infestation. Opportunists, diseases and pests will gravitate to monocultures, such as a mass planting of spreading juniper, where they can feast uninterrupted.

Low-Maintenance Beauty

The great benefit of growing natives is they require a minimum of maintenance. They don’t want to be fertilized, and once they’re established, all you’ll need to do is tidy up dead vegetation in spring and pull the occasional weed. However, for the first two years, you must be vigilant about seeking out and pulling weeds so the desired plants can get a firm hold. Check every two weeks and pull any weeds you see. Also, provide supplemental water the first year until the root systems are well established. A weekly deep watering is more beneficial than frequent shallow splashes because shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface. A good layer of mulch between the plants will help restrain weeds and keep moisture in the soil. Invest now in a lakeside buffer planting for the long-term benefits of a beautiful landscape that requires less work than the traditional suburban garden, attracts desirable wildlife and promotes a cleaner lake.

en and Valerie LaBrake live with their four children in a sheltered cove on Gills Creek where they have assembled an impressive collection of gear used for all types of lake fun. There are multiple boats and personal watercraft, a water slide, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, circa-1970 wet bike and an Olympic-style 3-meter diving board affixed to a docked houseboat. But the water toy that most quenches the LaBrakes’ thirst for fun these days is a one-of-a-kind, fully equipped floating boat bar. “We’d be lounging on noodles and tubes out there in the cove, and the next thing you know, glasses were empty,” said Ken, explaining the genesis of what Valerie refers to as his “latest unauthorized purchase.” “Why don’t you build some kind of swim-up bar so we can party properly?” suggested friends Nancy and Kelly Alderman, knowing full well that Ken, a veteran of 22 years in the construction business, would be up to the challenge. Ken’s design for the boat bar percolated to paper over the winter of 2014, and he began acquiring parts the following spring. As the summer season approached, he had amassed the necessary materials

to build his floating lounge: slabs of dock foam for flotation; two 4-by-10-foot sheets of inch-thick PVC for “hull” and “deck” (bar top, actually) surfaces; stainless steel tubing to fabricate a “waitress station” at the stern and bow-to-stern hand rails on each side; an easy-draw tap for an enclosed minikegerator; some 60 assorted fittings and fasteners; ten cup holders. Ken built the boat in less than a week and had it ready for its maiden voyage the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. “It comfortably seats 10, so we can party with lots of friends,” Valerie noted. “It actually sits best when all 10 stools are occupied. You can have less, but you need to sit balanced so the bar stays level.” For protection from the sun during the day, Ken outfitted the boat bar with an umbrella as a bimini top. Photo cells on top power a fan below the umbrella and requisite mood lights, as well as running lights for after-sunset use.

Operating gear includes a trolling motor guided by a mini steering wheel mounted on the deck, plus a short boat hook and a pair of appropriately sized paddles. “The operating range is very limited,” Ken said. “We only use the motor to get away from our dock, pick up neighbors at theirs and keep it positioned so the ladies who want to catch the rays can do so.” A handy charging jack lets Ken refresh the trolling motor battery as the boat bar bobs alongside his dock between happy hours. A speaker linked wirelessly to a shore-side iPod supplies music. The craft is clearly a conversation piece. “More than that, it’s a conversation starter,” noted Valerie. “Now that we have it, we find all kinds of occasions to enjoy chatting with neighbors and guests. It’s often spur of the moment, which perfectly fits the lifestyle here at SML.”

magine having a replica of a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse on your waterfront. Tim Gardner did, way back in the 1990s, about 10 years after he and wife Vicki purchased a home built more than 100 vertical feet above a sheltered cove near channel marker R50. “When Tim said he wanted to build a lighthouse down by the lake, I envisioned a lawn ornament-sized decoration that I’d plant pansies around,” said Vicki, who was too busy working to worry much about the details. “Only when he started carrying 60-pound bags of concrete mix down our steep walking path did I realize he had his sights set on something bigger.” What Tim had in mind was a replica of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse that once guided mariners approaching the South River below Annapolis, Maryland. Built and activated in 1875, it’s the country’s only remaining screw-pile lighthouse, now owned and preserved by the Annapolis Maritime Museum and the U.S. Lighthouse Society. Gardner had a special fondness for this lighthouse. It was burned into his memory when he helped bring a ship up the Chesapeake Bay toward New York while he was a cadet earning his degree in marine engineering at the State University of New York’s Maritime College.

Steep lot, Steep challenge

Just creating an anchoring foundation for the 37-foot-tall replica was a significant undertaking, made all the more so by the fact that the couple had to walk a switchback foot path down – and then back up – their steep lot to access the construction site. After several years of that exercise, Tim decided a road connecting house level with waterfront needed to be built. “Several excavators I consulted refused the job, saying, ‘It’s too steep. It can’t be done,’” Tim recalled. A creative problem-solver who’s not easily discouraged, Tim rented a track hoe just to give it a whirl. A week later, he had dug out a terrainhugging cart path that allowed him to make a trip down in his Ford Explorer.

“I thought that truck would never come back up the hill, that it had become a permanent part of our waterfront,” noted Vicki, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce since 2002. “But sure enough, he drove it back up on the first try.” Shortly thereafter, the road was improved to gravel, and Tim built a caisson trailer to haul heavy lumber down behind the Explorer. “The anchoring pilings and some other large joists were floated across the cove from a more accessible lot across the way,” Tim said. “But the vast majority of materials came down the hill.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

About 90 percent of the materials also are distinguished because they’re enjoying a second life. Like many with an engineering bent, Tim has an eye for items that can be re-purposed. “The pilings and decking boards have all been part of other docks at one time,” he said. “Metal siding and roofing are cast-offs from Morton Buildings. Floor joists, studs, appliances, fixtures — all have been used somewhere else.” Despite its 26-foot diameter, the lighthouse has no center post for support. Tim spanned the outer pilings with half-inch steel sandwiched between two 2-by-12-inch joists, managing to raise the beam into receiving slots in the pilings using just block and tackle on a temporary A-frame. “He did that by himself,” Vicki noted. “No helper besides his own ingenuity.” And then there’s the distinctive “boat bow bar” at the lake level — cut as one piece from a 27-foot 1960 Owens cabin cruiser Tim had intended to restore. “I started gutting the interior and discovered that sections of the hull were held together by little more than the paint,” Tim said. “So I cut the forward 9 feet free at the waterline and slid it into place as a feature for the lighthouse’s lower level.” Two years ago, as “decompression therapy” 58 March • April 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

following an extensive run of entertaining family, Vicki grabbed her painting supplies and spent a Saturday creating a mural backdrop for the bar that depicts SML’s mountain view. The result is a unique dock-adjacent spot to enjoy a glass of wine and some beach music. The middle level of the lighthouse provides another spot to relax — this one with a vantagepoint view across the cove and up the Roanoke River. Hexagonal floor space runs 10 feet on a side, creating a breezy under-roof platform that easily accommodates a full-size refrigerator and plenty of counter space. Each fall, Tim mounts an infrared heater above the ceiling fan and positions a 150-year-old coal-burning stove so the couple can enjoy the lighthouse in colder months. Rolldown shades on the four open facets help retain the provided warmth.

A boAtloAd of enjoyment

The Gardners spend time at the lighthouse several times a week throughout the year and almost daily during the warmer months. Among their favorite occasions are what they refer to as the two “notch days” that occur on each side of the summer season — one in early May and one in late August.

“Notch days occur when the sun sets directly into a dip in the tree line on the distant shore,” Vicki explained. “We gather some neighbors, put our feet up on the railing and toast the certainty that the sunset will fall right into that void twice each year.” The lighthouse also is a perfect setting for the Gardner family’s enthusiastic observance of Pirate Days, a relatively new lake tradition that has expanded from a small observance in their cove to a Chamber-promoted weekend theme at venues all around the lake each July. “It all began when I made ‘pirate pancakes’ one Saturday in 2011 for grandchildren Tim and Eloise,” Vicki said, “and Tim declared it was ‘Pirate Day’ down at the waterfront. We dressed the part, in anticipation of an attack by neighbor Ernie Lefebvre skippering a suitably decorated sailboat. The kids and neighbors helped Tim defend the cove with water blasters and a launcher for water balloons that Grandpa Cappy rigged on the main floor of the lighthouse.” “The balloons we use are biodegradable latex, but last year we fired over 800, so we put a penny bounty on each, and the kids scrambled to retrieve their share when the fighting was over,” Tim said.

By 2002, the basic structure was far enough along to be included in an oil painting representing lake landmarks by regional folk artist Pat Dougherty. The original hangs in the Bedford Visitor Center; a smaller copy can be viewed at the SML Visitor Center at Bridgewater Plaza. The lighthouse attracts attention from the water, as well. “I’ll be down there working,” said Tim, a home inspector, “and a stranger will cruise into the cove and ask to take a photo. Recently, one guy hollered, ‘When you’re selling, I’m buying.’” “The lighthouse is one of our greatest assets,” Vicki said. “Tim’s original inspiration — way back when our kids were still in high school — was to build a place to one day camp out with grandchildren. Finishing the third-level sleeping loft is his next project. It’s time now that the youngest [Finley, 2] is about ready.”

Labor of Love

While the structure is a 5/8-scale replica of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse (Tim callipered his original drawing’s dimensions from a scale model he had purchased in a souvenir shop in Annapolis), it is not intended as an aid to navigation. “There’s a small LED fixture near the top,” Tim noted, “but it is only rarely lit for brief periods. We don’t want to confuse any boaters coming down river at night.” With the structure entirely on dry land, only one piling comes close to touching the water. Lighthouse construction in “Tim’s Cove” (named for both Gardner and the couple’s oldest grandchild, 8-year-old Timothy) has been a 17-year project that commandeered much of the couple’s non-working time. “For many years, my only hobby was acquiring materials and nailing wood together,” Tim said. “Year after year, this project was our vacation,” Vicki added. Trek Top To The

Story

We’re all familiar with the iconic view of Smith Mountain from the lake, but not many can say we’ve seen the inverse – the view of the lake from the top of Smith Mountain. Several years ago, veteran Laker freelance writer Jerry Hale ventured to the summit and wrote about his excursion for an article entitled “What’s Up There?,” which ran in our July/August 2005 issue. Over the years, dozens of readers have requested back copies of the story, which led us to decide it was time to revisit the topic and provide guidance for those who wish to make the trek. Please note there are restrictions about when traffic is allowed on the access road, so be sure to check the details in this story and abide all laws. – Andie Gibson, Editor

ll who venture onto Smith Mountain Lake — or, for that matter, drive the roads that surround it — find their eyes drawn to the stretch of high ground that contains the lake along its eastern shore. It’s hard to resist marveling at its unspoiled beauty — sometimes so defined you can pick out individual pine trees, and other times shrouded in a humidity-induced haze that makes it appear out of focus. The name Smith Mountain originally referred to the peak on the Bedford side of where Smith Mountain Dam is now located. Once the lake was formed, common usage transferred the name to the length of the ridge visible from much of the water.

A few Lakers, like Chestnut Creek’s Erich Faber, regard the mountain as much more than a mural-like backdrop for the SML region. Faber regularly visits the mountain with sons Luke (11), Jack and Peter (both 14), who hanker to be on the ground, taking full advantage of its recreational possibilities.

“We’ve been there dozens of times,” Erich said. “By boat, it’s a matter of nosing onto a stretch of exposed beach at the mountain’s base, scrambling ashore and tying a bow line to a nearby tree. Then it’s an energetic climb along one upward sloping shoulder after another until we reach the ridge line. There really aren’t any trails. But in a couple of hours, we’re at the top and can hike along the relatively level fire road [Broad Ridge] that runs the length of the ridge.” The mountain is home to all kinds of wildlife, including poisonous snakes. The Fabers have yet to be threatened, but always are on alert and careful where they step. “We’ve seen rattlers,” Erich said, “but as long as you give them their space, they’ll leave you alone. The boys also look for wild turkeys and the feathers they shed. We’ve seen deer moving about and lots of their leave-behinds. Last trip up, we found bear tracks on a sandy creek shore but never spotted the animal. “We occasionally camp at the top,” Erich added. “We’ve done that in the snow, and the combined view of shoreline lights and brilliant stars is pretty incredible.”

Outdoors-y folks like the Fabers, hunters and steep-terrain hikers may find the mountain appealing nearly year-round, but for the less adventuresome, now is a good time to view SML from atop its namesake ridge. The absence of leaves on the trees opens up the views, and most creepycrawly inhabitants are hibernating. I took a trip to the top last April via the access road with friend Rich Faga, an ideal companion because he volunteered his high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. (The rutted roads on the mountain are not for the family sedan or even a small SUV if you don’t want it to get bounced around or muddied.) In addition, Rich is trained as a firefighter and EMS first-responder, so his company made my wife less worried. She tends to be, shall we say, “creature averse” and visualizes the mountain as a teeming snake pit. Rich and I saw no evidence of that, however. From the Franklin County side, we got to the access road by taking Virginia 40 to Penhook and turning left onto Old Mountain Road (across from Penhook Minute Market). That road intersects Smith Mountain Road where a right turn takes you to Jasmine Road. We turned left onto Jasmine, traveled for 1.6 miles and found the access road on the left. Fifty yards in is the gate and a large bulletin

board with area information posted. From there begins the steeper part of the ascent. Don’t go soon after a rain or snow or you’ll find things slippery and likely impassible for all but the most capable off-road vehicles and drivers. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ posting on the bulletin board indicates the access road gate is open for vehicular traffic two stretches of the year, roughly corresponding to hunting seasons. • Spring: The first Saturday in April through the third Saturday in May

• Fall: The last Saturday in September through the second Saturday in February Outside of these periods, you may park and take a fairly demanding hike to the top. The main climb is about a mile long and winds upward to the vicinity of the southern-most cell tower. The fire road along the spine of the mountain runs about 2.5 miles, ending at the northern cell tower near the dam. There’s not a great view of the dam there, but there is plenty of room to turn around, climb out to stretch, and catch a nice view of Saunders’ Point and the meandering Roanoke channel beyond. Those who wish to catch the views from both sides of the mountain’s “V” can return to Virginia 40, turn left toward Gretna and watch for Climax Road (799) at the old Pure Oil sign, about 5 miles beyond Penhook. A left onto 799 will feed you onto Toshes Road (605) in 1.1 miles. In 2.2 miles, it changes to Ridgeway Road (608) and in 5.5 miles it crosses Leesville Lake, where it becomes Tolers Ferry Road (still 608). The mountain access road, on the left 6.9 miles beyond the Leesville crossing, is called Silver Dollar Lane and is well marked by another DGIF bulletin

board. The first gate is typically open, but the road quickly becomes steep and rutty, eventually reaching a second (locked) gate a steep and rutted mile and a half or so in. Be warned: the small turnaround space is not for the faint of heart. We paused there, climbed out of the truck, and we could see through the leaf buds down to Witcher Creek and a bit of the lower Roanoke in the distance, realizing the view would close in as the leaves mature. Bill and Anna Piatt of Mountain View Shores enjoy hiking on up to a rocky outcrop where the view encompasses Leesville Lake to the right and SML to the left. They park her sedan before the road gets steep and rutty. “It’s a manageable 45-minute walk up to a spectacular view,” Bill said. “And some other good ones on the way up, as well.”

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

The set-aside was made official during a 2008 ceremony in Roanoke where Michael G. Morris, AEP’s chairman, president and CEO, presented the easement declaration papers to then-Governor Tim Kaine,

helping address his goal of placing 400,000 acres of undeveloped land under conservation easements during his term in office. “This tract of land is especially beautiful and a prominent centerpiece for the entire lake area,” Morris said at the ceremony. “The easement ensures that its beauty and character will be preserved from this point forward.” Since then, the land has been managed by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland

Fisheries. Public access for hiking, camping and, in season, hunting is encouraged. Plans are already underway for a 50-mile ultra marathon in the spring of 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Smith Mountain Lake. Organizers said they hope the event, sponsored by AEP and the Franklin County YMCA, will start and finish on top of the dam and take runners on a winding route that will include mountain trails. – Jerry Hale

Since our original story appeared in July 2005, Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, has placed the nearly 5,000 acres of scenic Smith Mountain in both Bedford and Pittsylvania counties under a conservation easement to be managed as wildlife habitat.

Tolers Ferry Road ultimately intersects with Smith Mountain Parkway (626). A right turn and then quick left onto White House Road (608) will take you back to Virginia 122 at Downtown Moneta. If you decide to fully circle the lake on this outing, take 122 south to Diamond Hill Road (655) at the Food Lion; turn right and travel for about 7 miles, then turn left at Diamond Hill Store and then immediately right onto Goodview Road (655). After about 8 miles, turn left on Turner Branch Road (619), which winds its way to an intersection with Hardy Road (634) just north of Hardy Ford Bridge. Turn left to return to Virginia 122 south of Westlake Corner or right to run errands in Roanoke. Rich and I ended our journey thankful we live where such natural beauty is readily accessible, but feeling we should only recommend this excursion to those in good physical shape with a strong spirit of adventure. We would certainly never recommend it at a time when the terrain is anything but bone dry. In fact, we said repeatedly on our trip, “This would be insane if the ground were the least bit slippery!”

For nearly a decade, Russ Baskett has led a community outreach program focused on enriching the lives of children in the Smith Mountain Lake area.

ike many retirees at Smith Mountain Lake, Russ Baskett settled here to enjoy a tranquil life enriched by peaceful waters, majestic mountains and freedom to indulge in favorite pastimes long suppressed by a demanding career. After earning a PhD in microbiology from the University of Missouri, Baskett spent 40 years as an educator, teaching biology, microbiology and environmental studies at Missouri, Texas Tech and two community colleges in Richmond. Through the years, Baskett developed an affinity for kids who were struggling academically. Instead of desiring to teach advanced classes, he preferred to help kids with limited resources, those often overlooked or impoverished. “I’m not certain why I am drawn to this work; maybe it’s in my emotional or spiritual DNA,” said Baskett, who retired to SML with wife Sarah, a psychiatrist, in 2001. “I think all of us have an inner guide that leads us through life. When people are excluded or marginalized because of their race, economic status, gender, religious beliefs and other social justice issues, I try to act or react in positive ways that, in my opinion, further the common good.” Not one to sit around, Baskett immediately got involved in the Smith Mountain Lake Association, utilizing his experience and passion for environmental studies to serve on the board of directors for five years. In early 2006, Sally Johnston, then a staff member at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta, approached Baskett about attending a

gathering to discuss concerns relating to children in the SML community. Johnston told him, despite the apparent affluence of lake residents, more than 500 children attending the five elementary schools closest to Smith Mountain Lake qualified for the free or reduced-cost meal program during the school year. “This figure was troubling,” Baskett said. “We knew that these children were the most vulnerable to falling behind in reading, writing and math over the summer break and that we could provide assistance and support.” Baskett saw the need for mentoring and developing communication skills. Johnston’s interests were cultural diversity and global education. Mike Carr, active with the youth at nearby Resurrection Catholic Church, wanted a peace camp focusing on nonviolence and conflict resolution. Charles Lunsford, a prominent retired Roanoke businessman, was concerned about nutrition for impoverished children over the summer when they’re not in school. Out of that gathering, a committee was formed. It grew to nine members, then 12, and SML Good Neighbors was born. The team worked with a consultant from Eastern Mennonite University to develop a curriculum focused on mentoring in reading, writing, communication, as well as enrichments in peace education, environmental education and cultural Russ Baskett leads SML Good Neighbors, an organization he helped start in 2006 to assist children in need at Smith Mountain Lake.

The plan included using college interns as the primary facilitators of daily programs, providing young adults who desired to help the needy with vocational exploration opportunities, as well. After acquiring 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2007, SML Good Neighbors launched its first initiative, providing sack lunches and weekend backpacks for children in summer programs in five schools in Bedford and Franklin counties. The first day-camp program began the following summer. “The growth of the four-week enrichment programs has been striking,” Baskett said, “growing from 65 children in grades

Baskett noted that 90 percent of Good Neighbors participants maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer, which he attributes to the work of reading buddies, adult volunteers who spend 30 minutes each day working one-on-one with children during the four-week programs. While he is the only founding member still vigorously active in the program, Baskett is quick to point out that the success of Good Neighbors is due to multiple community partnerships. “The two school systems, approximately 200 volunteers, the efforts of a working board, the financial support of churches, civic organizations foundations and a large number of individuals,” Baskett said, makes this seemingly impossible dream a reality each year. Pressed to identify his favorite part of SML Good Neighbors, Baskett hesitated only a moment before replying: “Peace education — especially learning to control anger, resolve conflicts in a non-violent way and be part of the team — is important for the children to see and learn.” One way children in the program experience this is through the interns, the young adults

who serve as teachers, mentors and role models. Baskett smiled as he described how he has seen these college students enthusiastically embrace the curriculum and watched both students and teachers explode with excitement during innovative lesson plans. Over the years, Baskett has stayed in touch with most of the interns. Like a proud parent, he boasts of their career choices, many of them clearly influenced by their summers spent at SML with Good Neighbors. Several have taken local teaching assignments; others have gone on to work for various non-profits like Teach for America and the Peace Corps. Over the past year, Good Neighbors has reached several milestones. Lisa Lietz was hired as the first full-time program director, managing all aspects of the summer enrichment and nutrition programs, as well as several new after-school programs. Early last year, an eight-week, Saturday morning

Student Enrichment in the Arts (SEA) program was launched and continued as an after-school program in the fall. A visual arts program, also on Saturday mornings, was started at Staunton River Middle School and, most recently, Good Neighbors purchased property to house administrative offices and summer teaching staff. What’s ahead for Good Neighbors? Baskett said he hopes to offer more opportunities for exploration of the arts, including dance and music, and the expansion of a partnership with the Roanoke Children’s Theater that began in 2009. He’s also testing the waters for a summer scholars program for kids in grades 7-9. “I want to give the kids time for things schools don’t have time for: more about technology, science, engineering in summer specialty programs; opportunities for kids who don’t have the money to pay extra for these kinds of programs,” he said. Jeremy Kirby, brewmaster and vice president of operations at Sunken City Brewing Co., SML’s first and only craft brewery and taproom, hosts the Smith Mountain Mashers, a club that meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the brewery. For $5, attendees sample four to five versions of a specific beer type at each meeting. Seth Johnson, a brewer at Sunken City, purchased several India and pale ales to be tasted at January’s gathering. Other members, including Dave Swenson of Burnt Chimney, brought in samples of their latest home brews. “I started home brewing back in the ‘70s when it was illegal,” Swenson said. “Now the hobby is legal

and has really taken off. With Sunken City here, home brewers have a place to meet, enjoy beer and share recipes and techniques.” Sara Kirby runs the Southwest Virginia chapter of Barley’s Angels, an organization with a network of clubs around the world dedicated to expanding the appreciation and understanding of craft beer among women. The group, which has approximately 25 women on its roster, also meets at Sunken City for tastings and member-provided snacks. “I’m just trying to organize non-threatening, comfortable and fun occasions where women can get introduced to craft beers, as well as new friends,” said Sara Kirby, noting the group takes

Some Barley’s Angels members also attend the Mashers gatherings. “We welcome everyone who wants to get more familiar with craft beers,” Jeremy Kirby said. “Anyone interested can call Sunken City or visit our Facebook page for details on upcoming club gatherings.” Patti Massey, a friend of the Kirbys who moved to Smith Mountain Lake from Winchester four years ago, said she’s been a Barley’s Angel since its inception early in 2014. “Between our meetings and Mashers’ meetings, I’ve made lots of new friends and had a chance to try beers I never would have encountered otherwise,” Massey said. “It’s been a blast.” Another group of area craft-beer fans pays annual club dues of $50 each to congregate at Jake’s Place monthly in the off-season. During the busy summer season, they meet at a member’s house or take a field trip to an area brewer for potluck meals and beer tastings. Restaurant manager Mike Gordon picks the brews to be sampled, and those that get rave reviews often become standards at the restaurant. “There are about 35 members,” Gordon said. “Eighteen to 20 are at most of our meetings. They enjoy having a say in which beers end up on tap at Jake’s.” Club members also enjoy other perks at Jake’s Place, including discounts on beer and the beer/ food pairing dinners that Gordon hosts monthly, October through May.

Brew your own Batch Several residents around SML also dabble in brewing beer at home, which can involve an elaborate, multi-pot system or a setup as simple as one steel pot and a turkey fryer. The latter is how Steve and Debbie Malone of Huddleston recently started with their homebrewing hobby.

John Zeimer of Glade Hill stumbled upon home brewing 3½ years ago when he was helping clear out the belongings of a close friend who had died. “He had a wine-making setup that used a spigot-equipped bucket. The accompanying literature said it could also be a beer-making kit. Next thing I knew, I was cooking a batch of beer.”

“We’ve done four batches so far and have several kits waiting,” Steve said. “Kits make it really easy to get started. They have all the ingredients you need for a batch — malt extract, hops, yeast and flavorings — in the proper proportions. Once you have some experience, you can adjust or add ingredients to modify the batch to your taste, alcohol content and so on. That’s where we’re headed next.”

Zeimer, who has since created a dedicated area in his basement for brewing beer, also uses a turkey fryer to heat the water. “I’m on batch 36 – a double IPA,” he said. “I like to make stouts and porters, as well.” Moneta’s Hank Irving has been brewing beer for 15 years. He said he averages six five-gallon batches a year, with the varieties matched to the seasons when they will be consumed. Irving dispenses only from the kegerator of his in-home pub, which he said saves him from “messing with the bottling step.” According to Jeremy Kirby, the startup equipment required for home brewing can be purchased for less than $80. “All you need is a cooking pot and a couple of buckets, plus maybe a siphon to help transfer the liquid,” Kirby said. “If you want to move out of the kitchen, invest in a quality turkey fryer for heating the mixture. Then, get an ingredients kit – usually about $40-$50 – and you’re ready to brew.” – Jerry Hale

edford resident John Ketwig first published “...and a hard rain fell: A GI’s true story of the War in Vietnam“ in 1982. Twenty-five years later with more than 500,000 copies sold, Ketwig said the memoir of his time spent in Vietnam, Thailand and his return home continues to make an impact on students around the globe. “I do a lot of talks at high schools and colleges, and I make myself available via e-mail to students who are searching for information to do papers on Vietnam,” he said. “I’ve recently worked with students in Germany, Switzerland, Georgia, Texas, New York, California and Canada via e-mail. I try to tell them the history of the Vietnam War and all that was going on in that era.” Ketwig said the book started as a letter to his wife and kids, a way to record his experiences and begin the process of emotional healing.

“I survived the Vietnam war with no significant damage to my body, but with great damage to my spirit,” he said. “Our firstborn son lived 14 days and died of birth defects I believe were caused by my exposure to Agent Orange. My wife never set foot in Vietnam, and her heartbreak was an unconscionable tragedy.” Ketwig said he’s working on several other books, including a memoir on his career in the automotive industry, as well as a social history of the Vietnam era with emphasis on “the questions that made it all so passionate and important. Plus, I’m trying to bring those questions forward to today’s events and, especially, today’s wars.” Ketwig stressed his books are anti-war, not anti-American. “One loves the sick child but curses the disease,” he said. “I just want to urge young people to think about America’s militarism throughout the

As a young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, she’s put on a train with dozens of other orphans bound for new homes in the Midwest. Me: “Hey Hon, I’ve been thinking.” Hubs: “Rut roh.”

“This lake house needs a spring cleaning.” “What? We’ve only been here for two years.” “Three. The place is getting cluttered. We need to tidy up.” “Aw, geez, what did I do wrong?!” “Come on, it will be fun. We’ll do it together.” “Great.” “We can start with the magazines.” “Fine by me, they’re all yours.” “Oh really? What about all your fishing magazines? Take for example [reaches over to top of the pile next to the bed]: Monster Tackle Boxes.” “Hey, I need that! It has a cool article on making flies out of used beer cans and duct tape. What about this one: Flea Markets, Thrift Stores and Other People’s Trash.” “Can’t throw that one out. Still haven’t read the article on how to repurpose a shower curtain in 27 easy steps.” Three hours later, we’ve thrown away a total of six magazines. And the Hubs is acting a little hinky about giving up that issue of Bass Lovers, Bass Friends. Me: “Moving on.” Hubs: “Okey dokey. I think there a few things in the kitchen we can ditch.” “Like what?” “How about some of those Pyrex pie plates?” “Those are collectible.” “Sure. But do we need 17 of them?” “Oh, we don’t have 17.” Cue the counting. “OK, we have 14. I’ll give up four. Now, about that junk drawer.” “We have a junk drawer?” “Right behind you. Two hours later, drawer still won’t open. However, we have managed to clean out the fridge that contained, among other truly gross items, petrified limes from last summer, some very sketchy looking stuff wrapped in plastic and a pickle jar full of pickle juice (but no pickles). Me: “How about we next clean out the dock house?” Hubs: “Oh no, you said that was MY domain.” “Well then, let’s clean out the garage.” “Dock house it is. But there’s nothing in there we can throw out.” “Fine. We’ll just straighten up a bit.” “Can we take a nap first? I’m exhausted.” Three hours later, we’re finally down at the dock house. Me: “For the love of all that is holy, where did all these rafts come from?” Hubs: “We need all of these.” “Why?” “In case one gets a hole in it.” “We have emergency backup rafts?” “Yep.” “Are you kidding me?” “Nope.” “What about all these fishing lures?” “Do. Not. Touch. My. Lures.” “That’s not what you said last night.” Didn’t even crack a smile. Sheesh. “I think we can agree we need to deal with those nasty cobwebs out in the gazebo. And how about rock-paper-scissors for who has to clean the mystery poop out of the canoe?” “Deal.” “Rock, paper, scissors.
