Taste of the County fundraiser June 4 in Beckwith This year marks the 13th year for the Taste of the County food, beer and wine tasting gala - all proceeds going to our locally run Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program, which supports 143 differently-abled riders across the county.

Taste of the County Monday, June 4 starting at 6 p.m., is a fun filled evening that boasts participation from the area's top food and beverage providers including; Café Postino, The Black Tartan Kitchen, The Picnic Café, Constellation Wines, Cabano Kitchen, The Perth Brewery, The Waterfront Gastropub, Black Fly Beverage Co., Corby Spirits and Wine and the baking expertise of the temptations crew

and several riders themselves.

The 2018 Taste of the County will once again be hosted at the lovely Stonefields Estate on the 9th Line of Beckwith. Last year's fundraiser was a great success with a sold-out crowd of 200 people. All proceeds from this event will go directly toward the riding program and the care of our 10 beautiful horses.

On Saturday, May 26 at 1 p.m., the public is invited to visit the High Lonesome Nature Reserve for a demonstration of how Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) is scientifically utilizing sound recordings to improve the management of their wilderness properties.

Under a one-year pilot project, MMLT, with the support of citizen scientists, has developed and field tested best practices for bioacoustic data collection, analysis and interpretation.

Representatives of the

Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant Review team, including Louise Heslop, funders of this pilot project, will be on hand to congratulate the team on this new application of bioacoustic monitoring and present a plaque to mark the work done as a result of receiving a grant from the foundation in July 2017.

Mary Vandenhoff, MMLT board director, will explain how bioacoustic monitoring will provide MMLT with a deeper understanding of habitat diversity and changes over

time, including early warning of changes in ecological integrity.

Project scientists will be available to explain the process and analysis.

High Lonesome Nature Reserve is located at 867 Carbine Road, Pakenham.

The spotlight was on candidates in the Lanark-FrontenacKingston candidates for the evening at Brunton Community Hall, presented by the Lanark Federation of Agriculture, in partnership with the Carleton Place & District Chamber of

Commerce. Squaring off against each other were incumbent Progressive Conservative Randy Hillier, Liberal Amanda PulkerMok, Ramsey Hart of the NDP and the Green party's Anita Payne.

Pulker-Mok, appointed to the vacant Mississippi Mills council seat in 2016, announced her candidacy on Dec. 22. The Almonte mother of two boys said that her vision for Ontario includes rural ridings. "We need to see a strong voice when it comes to representing the unique challenges," she said.

She indicated the Liberal government would continue to invest in new job creation, health care, innovation for farmers and food manufacturers.

Hart, nominated as candidate on April 7, is the current executive director of The Table Community Food Centre in Perth.

"One thing is very clear and that's that Ontarians want change. The question is, what kind of change do you want?"

Hart said the NDP provides a fully costed platform that looks to provide access to housing, extension of health care to include den-

tal and drug coverage.

Payne is no stranger to the Green party, having run provincially in three previous elections and federally in 2015. The Tay Valley Township resident is a retired high school teacher whose focus is addressing the climate crisis.

"The Green party wants to do politics differently...we will tell you the truth and fund the programs that Ontarians want and need," she said, noting the platform surrounds jobs, people and plant.

Hillier, who lives near Perth, has been MPP of the riding since 2007. One of the former founders of the Lanark Landowners Association, he remains "active in challenging unfair and unjust government laws and policies and I continue to do so and will continue to do so if given the opportunity."

He said people expect government to better and improve their lives and with a PC government, the waste and mismanagement by the Liberals will be reversed.

Questions were submitted in writing to candidates. They surrounded everything from why

people should personally vote for candidates, their views on an integrated school board, natural gas infrastructure expansion, to high speed Internet, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and health care wait times/bed shortages.

A few fireworks were produced when a question asked about ensuring policies, regulations and legislation has been properly evaluated prompted Hart to bring up comments made about him by PC leader Doug Ford. During a leader's debate on May 11, Ford called Hart a professional anti-mining activist due to his work with MiningWatch Canada.

"I'm a scientist by trade...Mr. Hillier's leader has a special problem with facts and I've experienced this personally when he called me an environmental extremist..."

"You are," interjected Hillier. "...and that I have a personal crusade to shut down mines across the country. It's a complete fabrication bordering on slander," continued Hart. l See CANDIDATES, page 11

I've just returned home from interviewing four of the stars of the Studio Theatre's upcoming spring show, Sister Act, the Musical, and I'm still buzzing. Being in the presence of these phenomenal young actors was like sitting next to a Van de Graaff generator: the air was charged, flowing with energy, like liquid joy.

Cait Porteous (née Morton), Lindsay Rewi, Brent Maguire and Amber Mitchell are just four of 22 cast members in Sister Act, The Musical. (Visit studiothereatreperth.com for the full list.) It's the largest show ever put on at the Studio Theatre, and with 10 full performances, it will also

have the longest run of any Studio Theatre production to date.

"This show is a monster!" says Rewi, who shares the lead role of Deloris with her friend Porteous, each starring in five of the 10 performances. "For Cindi" (director Cindi Bates), it's a big job working with a cast this size, especially since nearly everyone is on stage at any given moment. It's like herding cats."

Hold parties to their future broken promises It's one thing to see a car commercial give us all the glitz and glamour with none of the hard numbers. The company is softening us up, luring us in with speed and flashy colours. Don't think about the ticket price, payment plan, your pocketbook. It's about the dream, not the reality. That's fine until we walk into the dealership. They have to tell us the price then. Why would anyone sign on the dotted line without knowing it?

No, we would demand to know the full cost.

Yet many appear willing to walk into the voting booth and sign on without knowing the cost of the next government.

At one point in the not-too-distant past, parties put out fully-costed platforms. Last November, former PC leader Patrick Brown unveiled his 78-page 2018 election platform, calling it The People's Guarantee. It included guarantees to cut income tax rates for middle- and low-income earners. Hydro bills would be slashed by 12 per cent. There was something for child care, mental health, an accountability act: you get the picture.

The party's new leader, Doug Ford, promised a "solid platform that is fully costed," but had yet to release one nearing the midway point of the June 7 election campaign. It seems the plan now is to make a scattering of announcements, each including a price tag.

The Liberal Party back in 2003 bragged about their fully costed platform, saying it was verified by a forensic accountant and two bank economists. Of course, once elected, Premier Dalton McGuinty more than doubled the promised deficit spending and raised taxes (in the form of the Ontario Health Premium.)

The Liberals have had a platform ever since. It is the government's budget released prior to every election. They are piling onto it with - among other promises - a pledge to ban auto insurance rates based on driver postal codes; an idea they voted against at Queen's Park.

So it seems the choice is between a platform that, based on past actions, would be abandoned once the party wins power; or no platform at all, meaning no promises to break, by a party that wants you to vote in ignorance.

The difference between a broken promise and no promise? At least we can hold them to a broken promise.

The Ontario NDP has offered platforms, including in 2018, and has not broken a promise in decades, if ever. That may have to do with holding precious little time in power, who knows?

We could dream a little too. Maybe that car will go as fast and shine as brightly as in the commercials.

Maybe cost doesn't matter. Ready to sign?

Not until we've seen the broken promise first.

Kudos to heritage fair participants Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the well put-together story about the Perth Heritage Fair last week. The information was well presented as well as acknowledging the work of the students, but I would like to provide some further details.

In the beginning the students in all the schools in the region ranging from grades 4-8 were given the task of selecting a topic pertinent to some aspect of Canadian History/Heritage. The topic could be on a local, provincial, national or international level.

The student had to select the topic, research the information, document this

Each school had their own Heritage Fair where students displayed their projects and were judged by three individuals at three separate times thus the student had to be well prepared to answer questions on their topic.

In conclusion a number of students were then selected to go to the Perth Regional Heritage Fair on May 10 at the Perth legion.

Examining all the projects on display was an eye opening experience. It was very easy to see that these students had worked very hard and each deserved recognition.

This region has some extremely talented students and they truly put themselves out there and gave it their all. Their demonstrations were extraordinary and each child took their turn expressing their knowledge concerning their subject matter before three indi-

vidual judges (three sessions of judging). Quite a challenge to say the least and each student stood up to the task.

I was extremely proud to see our area students do such an outstanding job and in my opinion each one was a winner. Yes awards were handed out and rightfully so but each students should be very proud of their achievements.

These students of today did a top-notch job of reviewing our yesterday.

Not only do the students need to be recognized for a job well done but also all the teachers, volunteers, organizers, the Perth Curling Club and the Perth Royal Canadian Legion for hosting.

When asked what they will do to curb the costs of electricity for residents and businesses, Payne noted that there needs to be a shift from nuclear generating stations to renewable energy options.

"Instead of rebuilding our aging plants, we could import hydro from Quebec. It would be one-third of the cost and they have an excess amount of power," she said.

Hart said the NDP's plan is to buy back Hydro One and place it back into the public's hands.

"The NDP isn't necessarily going to go forward with the refurbishment of plants, we'd have to evaluate the costs of that," he stated. "There's also a discrepancy in delivery charges to rural customers.

Pulker-Mok said residents should have seen a 25 per cent decrease in their hydro bills from the Liberals. "The Liberal government has invested $70 billion to have a viable electrical system in Ontario where we don't have rolling blackouts or brownouts anymore."

Hillier acknowledged the hydro crisis in the province as a "clustermuck."

"There are 250,000 families that can't afford hydro. Last year, 60,000 families were disconnected," he said. "This is a third world problem, not what we would expect in the richest province in the country." "...We have to do better or our kids will be in the dark eating cat food in another generation," Hillier added.

Another area of concern for local businesses is Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, which has had a big impact on employers. Candidates were asked how employers can be expected to absorb these costs and remain competitive.

“It was introduced to create fairness across the board,” Pulker-Mok noted. “Part of it was making sure that workers were given equal opportunity.

Businesses should be proud when they have employees who are making a living wage and having vacation they have earned. Those employees give more back to the business…invest in your employees and you’ll see the return.”

Hillier said that when the act was introduced on Jan. 1 of this year, there were 59,000 fewer jobs in this province by Jan. 31.

“Bill 148 has had a direct effect…one in 10 of every jobs in this province is a minimum wage job.

Having the highest rate of minimum wage workers is not a record to be proud of,” he said. “We should be a growing and prosperous province, not one where we strive to meet the minimum.”

Acknowledging that no one should have to work full-time and be under the poverty level, Payne said “too many people are in part-time jobs working beneath what they’ve been trained for.”

“We (Greens) will focus on helping employers provide good jobs that allow people to have a living wage,” she continued, adding this will be done through employer health tax and by reversing corporate tax cuts for big business by one per cent.

Hart said the NDP are committed to sticking with the Liberals’ plan for increasing minimum wage to $15 next year.

“We believe that people should live with dignity,” he said

When she came for her yearly visit, she turned the whole place upside down.

She brought enough clothes to last a year, even though she would only be visiting a week, and she never appeared in the same outfit twice. When she came downstairs for breakfast, she was dressed fit to kill, with every hair in place, and enough makeup on to sink a ship.

We always had a Saturday night party when Aunt Lizzie came. That gave her a chance to visit those she had grown up with, and as Father said, to show off, and put on the dog, and generally to show how well she had done since she left Renfrew County.

Well, there she was. Father spent as much time as he could in the barns.

Avoiding Aunt Lizzie as much as possible became his mission for the week.

He welcomed the Saturday night house party because that would give him one other night when he didn’t have to sit and hear his sister brag about her money in the bank, the big house, and the new car Uncle Jack bought every year. l See VISIT, page 13

Everything was ready for the party. Neighbours would bring eats, the big white pots were simmering on the back of the Findlay Oval, filled with green tea, and we five children were dressed in our nextto-Sunday best. Then we heard the roar from the upstairs bedroom.

Mother, my sister Audrey and I took the stairs two at a time, and Father never took his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal.

There was Aunt Lizzie, ramrod straight, half dressed, with something around her middle that had more strings and laces than I had ever seen in my life. She was hanging on to the bed post for dear life, and was so red in the face, I thought she was going to explode. I sat on the bed and looked her over from

head to toe. I had never seen one of those contraptions before, and I couldn’t imagine why anyone would put themselves through such torture, if it wasn’t necessary.

She was telling Mother to pull the laces tighter.

Mother tried, but it still didn’t suit Aunt Lizzie.

“Tighter Mabel,” she ordered. “If I pull any tighter, Lizzie, your back will meet your front,” Mother answered.

The laces were tied in the front, and big wads of cotton that had been sitting on the wash stand were being stuffed into her bosom. Finally, the ordeal was over. Her white silk dress was slipped over her head, and she looked ten pounds lighter than she did before she got laced up.

On the way downstairs I said to Mother I couldn’t

wait to tell the whole family what I had just witnessed in the bedroom ... I was sure it had something to with a sore back. Mother said I wasn’t to mention the corset to anyone ... the secret would just be between us.

I said I thought Father would like to know how much pain his sister was having, and maybe it would soften his feelings toward her. Small gathering remembers missing and murdered Indigenous women LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Flora Riley said she was thankful to those who joined her and her husband Michael, on May 8 to remember her sister and other missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The Smiths Falls woman held her own memorial tribute to the Red Dress Project, and hung six red dresses in the big birch tree on her front yard just outside of town.

"It was nice to remember my sister," she said, as the four women, and a couple husbands, gathered round the tree. "She would have been 72 today."

On April 25, 48 years ago, Riley's sister, Daphne Brown was murdered at the hands of her husband, Andrew Brown, now deceased.

Daphne's murder was the first in Goose Bay, Labrador.

Even though the group was small in numbers, Flora said it was nice to have a few moments of silence, as the light breeze blew off the Rideau Canal causing the dresses to billow and spin.

At the base of the birch sat Daphne's photo, a potted plant ... and a wooden angel propped up against the tree.

Flora said she hopes to honour her sister in a similar way in years to come, and would like others to do the same to remember those who are missing, or have been murdered.

EVELYN HARFORD eharford@metroland.com When Stephanie Mather walks through the foot subway underneath the train tracks, connecting Lanark Street to Robinson Avenue on Smiths Falls' east side, she's found numerous used needles littered on the ground.

The tunnel, known as the foot subway, is used by pedestrians as a quick way to get downtown. It's also a secluded place, away from view, where people use drugs.

It's apparent that some intravenous drug users cast aside dirty needles after injecting, leaving harmful litter in their wake.

Mather wants to see this change.

"It actually cringes me," she said in reaction to the most recent needle she found in the foot subway.

Last month, Mather recovered a needle in the tunnel on her way downtown.

"It was my boyfriend who saw it," she said. "So, we put it in a plastic bottle and put it in the nearest garbage can we found.

"It's disgusting. I was scared and upset it was there."

In total, Mather said she's found four or five nee-

dles. In fact, while walking through the foot subway during an interview with the Record News, she found another.

Her message for those who might be leaving used needles on the ground: "Please, please, dispose of them properly. There are children around."

Jennifer Adams, harm reduction co-ordinator and registered nurse with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, said that the unsafe disposal of sharps, including needles used for intravenous drug use, is a "huge issue" and why the health unit, in concert with the municipal drug strategy group, is trying to combat the issue.

Another needle deposit box will be installed downtown in the next couple of weeks.

The town currently has two needle drop box locations: one at the health unit and the other at Lower Reach Park. The drop box downtown will be the town's third.

"We've been getting quite a range of stuff in

there," she said.

Since the needle drop boxes have been installed, there hasn't been nearly the number of complaints received about dirty needles on the ground, said Adams.

"I rarely get a phone call from Smiths Falls," she said.

Last year, about 6500 sharps were collected in the two boxes alone.

Adams said that all kinds of sharps are recovered from the boxes, including equipment used by people with diabetes, home care, and veterinarians, in addition to needles from intravenous drug use.

"It's for anybody," she said.

The more people that use the boxes, the more it will show others that it's for everybody, she explained. This, said Adams,

could help reduce the stigma that can deter people from using the boxes in the first place.

Mather said that, while she's happy that there's another needle drop box being installed in town, there should be one installed near the foot subway.

The larger vision is to have drop boxes in all areas of town - including the south, west, east, north, and central. So far, the drop boxes, including the newest one, will cover the south, central and northern areas of town. The town also has a needle hunter group, whose members collect sharps littered in town.

Adams said it's good to know where needles are being found because it will help dictate where another drop box goes, and perhaps the health unit could look

at installing one in the east end of town next.

"The more the community takes on, the better it will be," she said. Let's take ownership of this. There's a lot of stuff we can do."

INTRAVENOUS DRUG USE The number of intravenous drug users in town is nearly impossible to count, said Adams. But, she said, the health unit's individual visits have increased steadily over the last five years.

Though, it's hard to know whether the uptick in people accessing the health unit's programs directed at the drug using population is because they're coming in more frequently as the stigma for accessing services is reducing, or whether the actual rate of intravenous drug use is on the rise.

Drug addiction and use cross cuts all sections of the population and doesn't discriminate based on age, gender, class or race.

"We see everybody," said Adams. "We're no different than any other town."

However, Adams said, heroin, an opioid commonly injected, but also smoked and snorted, is now in the top three drugs being used in town.

"It would appear that there are more needles being used in general," she said.

Widenmaier, Hoffman win volunteer awards

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com When it comes to volunteers, Smiths Falls town council has just one message: "Thank you for all you do and, please, don't stop!"

That was the message from Mayor Shawn Pankow on Thursday, May 17, as he handed out the community leadership recognition awards during the volunteer appreciation evening at the Smiths Falls Station Theatre that evening.

Municipal Volunteer of the Year Award Bill Widenmaier has served his community for many years, most recently as the board chair of the Smiths Falls Public Library board, from 20072014, having first been appointed as a member in 2005. He was vice-chair from 2015-2018. During his time as board chair, "Bill focused his efforts on

mittee, and served as a town councillor from 1992 to 2003. He was "highly regarded and respected for wordsmanship, insights, informed opinions, and more importantly, his happy-go-lucky attitude."

added that it has come to his attention that "his home was known throughout town as the best stop to make for Halloween trick-or-treaters!"

Widenmaier has served in various educational roles, from teacher to

vice-principal to principal, at schools around town, from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute to Chimo Elementary School, and others.

"I was caught unawares," said Widenmaier, who said he has

lived in town since 1968. "It has been my privilege, all these years, to be a part of this community. I've enjoyed it all."

EVELYN HARFORD eharford@metroland.com Police week kicked off at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute on Monday, May 14, with a focus on community partnerships.

The Smiths Falls Police Service (SFPS) were on site to educate students about the dangers associated with impaired driving, both by alcohol and drugs, and distracted driving, among other things.

The SFPS attended the local high school with other community partners to provide information to students on their respective services.

Const. Aaron Tompkins, the SFPS' community safety officer, was on hand to answer students' questions and to help educate and facilitate experiential learning.

Tompkins explained that students were given the opportunity to try on "marijuana goggles" to

simulate impairment, while their fine motor skills were tested. Students were asked to walk a straight line and then open a lock on a doorknob attached to a wooded apparatus made by the Grade 9 shop class at SFDCI. Police week runs from Sunday, May 13, until Saturday, May 19.

On Wednesday, all four Smiths Falls elementary schools headed down to the

Lower Reach Park Kinsmen Club for the SFPS' second annual Junior Detective Day, where students took part in several policerelated activities.

At the end, they received their Junior Detective certificates.

On Saturday, Cops, Crime Stoppers and Victim Services Lanark County and Coffee was held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Coffee Culture in Smiths Falls.

Traffic accident in Smiths Falls leads to impaired driving charge On Monday, May 7, at approximately 10:08 p.m., Smiths Falls police were called to attend the area of William Street West for a report of a motor vehicle accident.

of alcohol could be detected coming from her breath. Police said the driver was administered an approved screening device sample, which resulted in a "fail" reading. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to hospital by ambulance and later provided suitable samples of her breath to a qualified breath tech-

nician.

The driver was released by way of an appearance notice, left in care of hospital staff and stands charged with operating a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The charge in this matter haven't been proven in court.

Rideau Lakes woman dead after driving off boat launch Wendy Holmes, 57 of Rideau Lakes, died May 15, after driving off of a boat launch in Rideau Lakes Township on May 11.

OPP Rideau Lakes responded about 11:55 p.m. on Friday, May 11, that a female had driven off a boat launch at Forrester's Landing.

They found her submerged vehicle about 50 meters out from land in the Upper Rideau Lake.

An OPP Emergency Response Team member and a volunteer firefighter dove into the water and assisted the female from her vehicle to safety.

Police said alcohol was a factor.

Lifesaving efforts began and the woman was transported to hospital in Kingston in critical condition.

Montague students learn diversity first-hand with international student visit

In the build up to Education Week, which carries the theme of Equity in Action!, students at Montague Public School received first-hand education on what it's like to live in other parts of the world.

Nine international students from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI), representing Germany, Mexico, Spain, China, Hong Kong, France and Switzerland, spent time in classrooms from kindergarten to Grade 4 at Montague Public School last week, teaching students about their cultures and languages.

The Montague students were engaged in this learning interaction and were eager to ask questions and

share their knowledge and experience with the international students.

The initiative was co-ordinated by teacher Cynthia Gilmore, educational assistant Eiryn Harmison at Montague Public School, English language learner instructor PattiBree Harmison and teacher Emma Heart at SFDCI. "This opportunity provides the students with a wealth of knowledge about other countries and it gives them a sample of diversity at a young age, which helps to build tolerance and understanding," said Harmison of the Montague students.

"It puts (the international students) out of their comfort zone, push-

es them past their learning borders, and teaches them compassion," said Harmison of the SFDCI students.

She added that allowing the high school students the opportunity to act as the experts on their countries proved to be a positive experience for them. It put the international students in the role of teacher and allowed them to show true leadership skills and "come out of their shells a bit."

In preparation to the international student visit, Montague students did several social studies units and artwork that focused on different cultures.

The health unit also runs a needle distribution program to provide people with safe, clean needles.

Adams said that providing needles to drug users is in the interest of public health, and meant to lessen infection rates of Hepatitis C and HIV. If you take away the needle distribution programs, rates of Hepatitis C and HIV will rise in the community, since drug use will continue in the community with or without access to clean needles, she said.

The Smiths Falls Police Service are supportive of the needle drop drop boxes.

"I believe the drop boxes are an effective and safe method of disposing of used needles in our community," said Smiths Falls Police Chief, Mark MacGillivray.

"If it prevents a child from picking it up in a park and being infected or an unsuspecting person from accidentally getting stuck by a discarded needle, then this is a positive step for a safer community.

Putting sharps in the regular trash can expose waste management staff unnecessary risk, explained Adams.

You can take sharps to a pharmacy, but there is a wide range of policies when it comes to accepting them.

Your best bet: use one of the town's needle deposit boxes,

contact the health unit or your local pharmacy.

If you do find a needle, don't pick it up with your hands, don't put the cap back on it, don't force used ones into a container, don't fill a sharps container past the fill line, and don't put used ones in the garbage, recycling or on the ground.

Adams said the likelihood of getting an infection from a dirty needle is low.

"It's next to nothing," she said. Though, Adams acknowledged that there is real fear surrounding dirty needles, especially if people don't know how to safely dispose of them.

If you do get a needle stick injury, allow the wound to bleed freely, clean the wound well with soap and water, disinfect the wound wipe with an alcohol swab and cover with sterile bandage - and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

All used needles and syringes should be placed into a sharps container.

These containers are available at your local pharmacy. Used needles can be dropped off at local pharmacies, a community needle drop box, the health unit through the Smart Works program.

Adams said she can remember when it was common for people to put used sharps in the regular garbage, or use an old Javex bottle to put the sharps in and then dispose of it in the regular trash - which people shouldn't be doing.

"No matter how big or small the good deed, they were shooting for a Gordie Howe hat trick," said Pankow.

"They were determined to make a positive impact in our community, and in turn feel great at the same time." They created a "ripple effect" as they volunteered with the Salvation Army's Christmas campaign.

"They just didn't realize at the time that the ripple would turn into a tsunami," Pankow said.

Several team members spent their P.A. Day on Nov. 24 serving Christmas lunches to members of the community who might not otherwise have such a festive meal. During their annual hockey tournament the next day, Nov. 25, the team held a food drive, reaching out to all of the teams playing on the ice that day. They ended up collecting more than 1,000 lbs of food, which was delivered to the Salvation Army on Nov. 26.

The team kept up the pressure, volunteering for the Christmas kettle campaign, putting in 10 hours at five locations across town. A lighter fundraiser idea came to life on Dec. 8, during a teddy bear toss at a Smiths Falls Bears home game.

The day after New Year's Day 2018, the team found out that they were in the top 10 semifinalists, but the news was kept secret from the players until Jan. 5, when the announcement was made on TSN as they watched Team Canada in the World Juniors gold medal game.

By Jan. 30, they discovered that their online video was one of the top three contenders with the most views, and that the team would be moving on to the finals, with the final winner to be determined by a panel of judges. No matter what, they had won $6,000 for the Salvation Army, as well as $1,000 for the Smiths Falls Minor Hockey Association, and $1,000 for the Upper Canada Minor

Hockey Association.

"It was soon announced that the Salvation Army would use the funds to send less fortunate local children to camp," said Pankow. "(That) program that had been cut back due to lack of funding."

However, this was not good enough for the team. They organized a tailgate party, where they collected 4,000 lbs of food, and, with donations, sent three more kids to camp.

On Feb. 26, they learned that, despite their best efforts, the judges awarded the prize to the Le Pas Huskeys from Manitoba.

"There was absolutely no shame in missing out on the big prize and, in the next few hours, the team decided that sending 18 kids to camp would not do. In six days, the team rallied enough money to send all 33 kids to camp," said Pankow. "And that is what Smiths Falls is made of #Smithsfallsstrong."

The team would later be winners in another way, as part of what Pankow called their "Cinderella season," when they won the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League peewee House B Championships on April 2, with a 4-3 victory over the South Grenville Rangers at home in Smiths Falls.

"It seems so fitting that the hockey gods returned the good deeds favour for the incredible goodwill they shared in our community," Pankow said.

The youth award was created by golfer Brooke Henderson and her caddie sister Brittany and is presented annually "to a young person, or young persons, who have exemplified the tremendous commitment to excellence we continue to see from Brooke and Brittany. It recognizes the work ethic and commitment to community demonstrated by the Henderson sisters."

The award was established by town council three years ago.

Widenmaier was described as an "active participant who does his homework in preparation for meetings." He was also known for being "the type of volunteer who is often overlooked but is a consistent contributor to the community on so many levels."

Charles Gilhuly Award Katie Hoffman was described as "a relative newcomer to our community," having arrived in town 15 years ago. "(Hoffman) loves our community and is a great advocate for so many causes in our town," said Pankow. She chose to "spend her golden years in our community, but did not move here to sit back

and relax. Rather, she became involved in a variety of causes, including organizing lunch programs at a local school, serving with the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Auxiliary, and prenatal clinic, and serving as a board member for Open Doors."

In her nomination, she was described as "kind, caring, selfless, and generous." Her current community commitments include: • Chair of the Friends of the Smiths Falls and District Public Library • Organizer and participant in the Duncan J. Schoular School's children's breakfast program • Helping out with the library's annual book sales and trivia challenges • Front-of-house volunteer with the Station Theatre, where she is also a show organizer and host for the theatre's interna-

tional film nights • A member of the hospital auxiliary's baby blanket quilting group • Provides fresh baked goods, and healthy snacks, to the youth of our community, as part of the "Baking Angels" program "I now want that glass of white wine I turned down," joked a humble Hoffman as she took to the stage. "I appreciate it very much. It's just crazy," she said, noting that she likes to fill her time with worthwhile causes.

The award was donated to the Smiths Falls recreation committee by the Gilhuly family in 1975, and is presented annually to those who have been deemed to have "worked tirelessly behind the scenes for nothing more than the self-satisfaction of bettering the quality of leisure time for people in Smiths Falls."

"Katie, you are a shining example for others in

our community and your commitment to the children and youth of our town is deeply appreciated," said Pankow.

Pankow began the evening commending all those who took the time to give back to their community.

"Those who volunteer their talents, time, wis-

dom and more would suggest that they get more out of giving, than the community does from their benevolence," said Pankow. He cited a study published by Forbes magazine, which found that while "the power of volunteering has been documented for centuries, recent research is shedding

even more light into its surprising benefits."

As though that were not enough, volunteering can create a stronger, wider social network, which is why "many retirees comment that they wonder how they ever had time for work when their golden years are filled with volunteering."

Shirley passed peacefully with her family by her side on Monday May 14th, 2018 at the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth, ON in her 82nd year. She was the loved wife of the late Morris William Ashby (Sept 2010) and dearly loved Mom of Wayne (Kathie), Cathy (Dan) Trotter and Sharon (Ken) Scanlon. She was the special Nana to Trevor Ashby (Randall Greer), Megan Ashby (Phillip Thomas) Gregory Trotter (Alli Blunt), Hayden Trotter (Megan Pass), Jamie (Jerry) Diaz, and Michael Scanlon and very proud Great Nana to River and Canaan Ashby, and Noah Diaz. Shirley will be missed by her sister, Barbara Renaud, her brother Steve (Edie) Burke, sisters-in-law, Reta Burke, Louise Burke, brothers-in-law Ivan (Shirley Crosbie) Ashby and George Hawley. “Jo” Delphine Barbara Creighton (Jarvis) (nee Clark) passed away Saturday, May 12th, 2018 with her loving daughter by her side at the Rosamond Wing of the Almonte General Hospital. She was born in Smiths Falls on May 16th, 1927. Delphine was predeceased by her husband Willie Creighton of Rosetta/Lanark way, all of her fourteen siblings, also an infant daughter Mae and infant son, and her son Neil Jarvis. Jo will be greatly missed by her four surviving children Ralph (Freda) of Napanee, Keith (Marg) of Perth, Brian (Yvonne) of Athens and Kathy of Carleton Place/Almonte. She will be remembered with love by her seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and eight great-great grand-children (with three of those already in Heaven to meet her).

Irene Boudreau Long Irene Boudreau Long passed away on Jan 5, 2018 at the Palliative Care unit of the Brockville General Hospital. Irene is mourned by her husband, Brady Long, her daughter Colleen Gowan (Chris), grandchildren Keira, Jordan and Adam, her sister Marie Smith (Leo), her brothers Alan (Sandy) and Ronald Boudreau and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was a teacher for many years in Montreal, Ottawa and Alberta and ended her career as Principal of the School of Hope, a home schooling program in rural Alberta with over three thousand students enrolled at one point. She leaves behind many friends and colleagues across the country. Deacon, Randall Willis ‘RW’

On Monday, May 14th, 2018 following a lengthy and brave battle, Randy passed away peacefully at the age of 62 years.

Amazing father and best friend to his son Willis.

Oct 19, 1931 May 13th, 2018 Gordon passed away in Kingston hospital on Sunday, May 13th, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

He was the loved husband of Norma (Ferrier-Hogan) Scott. Gordon was predeceased by his first wife Arlie (McParland) Scott in 1979 and his second wife Joyce (McIntyre-Jordan) in 1995.

He was the cherished father of Ann (Jim) Martin of Osgoode, Elaine (Pete Noonan) Barber of Perth and Sandra (Mario) Caya of Perth and adored grandfather of Amanda (Samnang), Stephanie (Andrew), Kate (Chris), André and Nathalie and great grandson Atticus. Gordon was the stepfather of Janice Kerr and Michael Jordan (Joyce’s children); Karen Laur, Janet Huston, Dan Hogan (Norma’ s children) many step grand and great grandchildren and niece’s and nephews.

Gordon was predeceased by parents Thomas Bell Scott and Charlotte (Simpson) Scott and siblings Bruce, Isabelle, Raymond, Irene, Dorothy, Myrtle and Douglas.

He was a long time employee of Wampole Ltd and Canada Post. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St., West, Perth on Wednesday May 16th, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral service will be held in the Blair & Son Chapel on Thursday at 1:00 P.M. followed by a reception in the St. Paul’s United Church Hall.

Interment St. Bridgets Cemetery. In remembrance of Gordon, contributions to the Cancer Society Wheels of Hope or the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

Passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at the age of 94 years, with his beloved wife by his side, at The Grove Nursing Home in Arnprior. Doting and loving husband of 69 years to Frieda Helene. Son of the late Jan and Waleria Szkarlat (nee Kosecka), and predeceased by siblings Josef, Stanislaw, Maria, Stanislawa, Jan, Franciszek, Tadeausz, and Zdzislawa, all of Poland. Wladyslaw, fondly remembered as “Wally”, will be sadly missed by his wife, Frieda; a brother Ludwik of Poland; his children Edward of Arnprior, Robert (Diana) of Carleton Place, Elsa Scott (Robert) of Arnprior, Henry (Brenda Carter) of Ottawa, Barbara (McKeddie) Szkarlat of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, and Irene Sauvé (Paul) of Arnprior. Wladyslaw will also be missed by his grandchildren: Nicholas Szkarlat, Colin Szkarlat, Katrina Szkarlat (Tom Graham), Jonathan Scott, Ryan Szkarlat (Michelle), Kayla Szkarlat (Wesley Morris), Heather McKeddie, Donny Jr. McKeddie, Brianna McNulty (Ryan), and Nychelle McGrath (Sheldon); and great-grandchildren Connor and Liam McNulty, Paisley and Ava McGrath, Payton, Camden and Ryker Szkarlat, Skyler and Riley Leroux, and a precious greatgranddaughter soon to arrive. Born in Lyczanka, Poland in 1924, Wally spent a several years in a European army as a truck driver. It was there that he met the love of his life. They married in Kiel, Germany in 1948.

Wally came to Canada in the 1950’s to work for Gillies Bros. Lumber Mill in Braeside for a number of years, then moved onto the Kenwood Mills (also known as Hyuck Canada, and Weavexx) from where he retired. He enjoyed a good card game with friends, gardening, and time spent with his grandchildren. A private visitation for family took place at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior. Interment followed at the Malloch Road Cemetery, Arnprior. In his memory, please consider a donation to The Grove Nursing Home Redevelopment Fund.
