Angelique Francis may not be a name that you know yet, but once you hear her, you won't be able to forget it! This talented young woman has had many highs in her musical career and still has a lifetime of them to come. Starting her career at age seven, she made her television debut at 13, when she wrote and composed an original song for the Gayle King Show on the Oprah Network. She has toured the world and has become well known for her multi-talented, multiinstrumental playing, singing, songwriting and composing. She is known for her eclectic mix of musical genres including blues, soul, folk, jazz and rock.
Francis has toured all over and this summer is no exception. The Station Theatre in Smiths Falls is pleased to have her fit us in to her very busy summer schedule. In between stops at the Ottawa Jazz Festival and Bluesfest, which will have much larger audiences, we are thrilled to have her here in our intimate 140-seat theatre. Not only is this talented musician known as one of Canada's top emerging blues artists, she is also recognized for her volunteer work with various charities and youth mentorship programs. Over the past few years, Francis has received the following recognition for her volunteer efforts: An Ontario Leading Women Building Com-
munities Award (this award honours women who have made a significant difference in their communities in the province of Ontario), a Global Alliance Community Builder Award (for giving back to the community through music), and an Art Child Award (youth making a difference through art). Francis is at the Station Theatre on Friday, June 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $30, all in, and can be purchased with cash at Special Greetings, 8 Russell St. E., or with a credit card online at www.smithsfallstheatre.com or by phone at 613-2830300. – submitted by The Smiths Falls Community Theatre

On Saturday, June 23, the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) invites you to Discover Dragonflies and Butterflies at the High Lonesome Nature Reserve. This outing is being led by local ecologist and nature enthusiast Ken Allison, who has been studying these insects for more than 30 years, after being introduced to them by his children. There are more than 120 species of dragonflies (including damselflies) and more than 100 species of butterflies in eastern Ontario, and by late June, adults of many species of these insects should be flying at the Nature Reserve. With many beaver ponds, marshes and swamps at High Lonesome, we can expect to see many beautiful and interesting dragonflies
and damselflies that breed in these still waters. The wide range of habitats at High Lonesome also ensures that there are many types of plants present, providing opportunities for a wide range of butterfly species. Be ready to be surprised by the beauty of these small creatures as you spend a couple of hours wandering the trails of this gem of a nature reserve, observing the dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies along the way. Take binoculars, waterproof footwear and an insect net, if you have one. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and we'll head out by 10:30 a.m. Admission is by a $10 donation. This event is sponsored by Gilligallou Bird Inc., eastern Ontario's backyard birding specialty
store. Visit gillagallou.com for more. High Lonesome Nature Reserve is one of eight properties and more than 2,700 acres of ecological significant land in eastern Ontario now protected in perpetuity by MMLT. It is located at 867 Carbine Rd., outside Pakenham. Take County Road 29 to Pakenham Village, turn on Waba Road, and continue west for 2.9 kilometres. Turn left on Barr Side Road and travel for 1.6 km. Take the first left at Carbine Road and drive 4 km, to 867 Carbine Road. Please visit mmlt.ca/ event/discover-dragonflies-butterflies for more details and for a map to the property. – submitted by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust

It was June 8, 1948 when the charter was signed for the formation of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 475 Toledo. This was the result of the vision and dedication of 19 area veterans from the First and Second World Wars. They were: Stewart Hamilton, Charles Gray, Kenneth Johnston, Gerald "Joe" Lawson, O. Gardiner, L. Cahill, Ernest Allen, Eldon Mackie, Ronald Mott, Garnet Struthers, Earl Phillips, Gordon Johnston, James "Jim" Bell, M. Thornhill, Wilfred Letourneau, W.E. Bell, L. de Wolfe, Clifford Gray and B. Seeley. Fast forward to Saturday, June 9 when the Toledo legion hosted an open house to acknowledge 70 years in existence. There were exhibits recognizing the history of the branch, some sports demonstrations, hamburgers, hotdogs, cake and lots of visiting. The highlight of the afternoon was honouring 70 years of continuous legion membership of charter member, Eldon Mackie. Eldon is the last survivor of the original 19 members. Unfortunately, due to illness, Eldon could not attend but his son Grant was happy to accept his awards. Eldon was awarded a 70year legion membership lapel pin as well as a certificate of merit. The pin and certificate were presented by legion Zone G2 com-

the Thoms' boys, and Audrey had planned on having her friend Iva over. I was delighted. I got to sit in the front seat, jammed between Mother and Father, and the three boys and Audrey were packed like sardines in the back. They had to take turns sitting on the floor, which my sister had no intention of doing, since she had worn her best white dress to church, and the remains of the last sheep haul were still there. We had barely passed our lane on the way to Douglas when the trouble started. Earl, the youngest had been on the floor since we left church, and he decided he had had enough of the sheep dung, and it was time someone else changed places. When no one offered to change, Earl either bit Emerson on the leg, or jabbed him with his penknife, but the roars could be heard in Douglas still a few miles away. Emerson said he was going to bleed to death, Audrey said he didn't even have a scratch, and Everett asked Father to stop the car, because he wanted to walk back to the farm and get away from all the fighting. All this time Father never said a word, which was his usual way of dealing with a family fight. I could see him starting to chew on his pipe. Without a word coming out of his mouth, he wheeled the old car into someone's lane, pulled a U-

turn, and before you could count to five, we were on our way back to the farm. We were barely stopped when the four in the back seat fell out of the car, Audrey crying that her dress was ruined, Emerson limping and saying he was pretty sure he might lose his leg, Earl heading for the pump where he put his head under the spout and let the cold well water pour over his entire body, and Everett heading for the Bonnechere River. I followed Mother into the house, and Father stayed seated in the front seat of the Model T chewing on his pipe, looking straight ahead like he was in a trance. I was pretty sure it would be a long time before we again went for a Sunday drive after church. – Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? ABOUT US
Caution: roadwork ahead Construction season is upon us and with that comes an increased need for motorists to pay attention and adjust their driving accordingly. The price for not doing so can be devastating. It was just two years ago in April 2016 when Daniel William Milton, 42, was hit and killed by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive in Arnprior. Another worker was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. In the fall of that year, a 70-year-old man was charged with careless driving. This fall, an inquest will be held in Renfrew to examine the events surrounding Milton's death. The jury may then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. And with the many road construction projects underway in the Ottawa Valley and beyond, OPP are reminding motorists of the importance of construction zone safety and reducing speed when entering construction zones. The County of Lanark recently unveiled its summer construction plans, which include $7.75 million in work, including complete pavement preservation on 57.3 kilometres with rehabilitation and paved shoulders on 29.7 kilometres, including portions of Roger Stevens Drive in Montague, Appleton Side Road, Wolf Grove Road in Almonte, as well as major work on the Ashton Bridge, near Carleton Place. Traffic will be reduced to one lane for many of the projects. OPP say drivers are advised to proceed with caution when approaching a construction zone and to obey all warning signs, people and/or devices that are directing traffic through the area. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person. Lower speeds are often posted in construction zones to increase worker safety and to reflect increased road hazards such as construction vehicles, uneven or gravel surfaces and narrowed lanes, say OPP. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. There are ways to be as prepared as possible for what you might encounter on the roads. Information on roads and construction projects in Ontario can be accessed through the Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information Services, which provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario, by calling 511 or by visiting the MTO Ontario 511 website at www.ontario.ca/511. Let's respect workers by making the choice to drive safely this summer.

Resident says mayoral candidates need to 'walk the walk' DEAR EDITOR: Statements by the two candidates for Carleton Place mayor (Louis Antonakos and Jerry Flynn) are quite interesting but hardly credible and somewhat lacking. Both candidates purport "highest level of integrity and honesty" and "keeping tax increases to a minimum" in supporting our community. However, what is said and the actions they take tell a different story. In February 2018 both candidates as members of council voted in favour of the proposed Bodnar lands subdivision just above the

Despite advice from the urban forest river corridor committee and local residents to not approve the plan for this development they voted in favour. The conditions attached to the development of this subdivision are not adequate given the potential impact of the contaminated storm water on the Mississippi River and the safety and security of our drinking water. The developer's solution is based on expensive engineering approaches to control the storm water run-off which use outdated regulations (MOE 2003) instead of the more current guidelines and criteria

adopter. We might need an extra minute to find our courage, but underneath our good-looking bashful exterior is a reservoir of love and wisdom. If you are patient enough to tap into it, we want nothing more than to show our affection. We might need a quiet home and a little more understanding, but we promise once we feel safe we'll be loyal to you all of our days. We don't need to go to the same home. This week's featured pets Dave, Danielle and Dawson Hi, we are Dave, Danielle and Dawson and we're seven months old. We have a lot of love to give but we just need a patient
us, then please meet us at LAWS. Fabio Hi, I am Fabio and I am two years old. I look a bit funny as they shaved my lovely fur because it was severely matted and dirty when I arrived at LAWS. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a cat. Although I enjoy a bit of quiet time, I am no couch potato either. My toys are packed and I'm ready for adventure when you're ready to play.
I like affection, but I am comfortable to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little bit of all good things wrapped up in a steady funny body and as a bonus I come with extra toes. I like other cats too! I suppose you could say I am pretty much 'purr'fect. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the shelter at shelter@lanarkanimals.ca or by calling 613-283-9308.

Jeff Maguire writes about the Ontario election The contentious Ontario election campaign is now behind us and if you are like me you're probably glad it is. By the time June 7 rolled around I was thoroughly sick of the negative election advertising and I just wanted to see the end of the process. And this was a relatively short campaign! Doug Ford and the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party rode a towering wave of voter discontent to a convincing majority win something that surprised many people. Especially those who paid close attention to some of the election polls which are now a daily part of any and every election in Canada.
JEFF MAGUIRE Column I've never been a fan of election polls because I feel they can unduly influence uneducated voters and help swing the vote one way or another. There are a lot of people out there who vote without the benefit of much, if any, information about individual candidates or the platforms of the parties they represent. I think you should know something about the individual and the party you intend to vote for.
Please keep our community clean!
My concern is that certain polls appear to be released with no qualification. For example, what was the methodology used to compile the poll information? What was the sample size? Are certain polls done independently or are they party driven? To me those factors make a huge difference in terms of whether a particular poll can be considered legitimate. In fact what this pre-election hype did was reinforce my strong feeling that the only poll that really matters is the official one on election day. – Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Le Boat celebrates grand opening of North American headquarters in Smiths Falls
On June 13, 150 VIP guests joined Le Boat's international team to celebrate the grand opening of its first Canadian base and the launch of North American cruise operations on the Rideau Canal and Waterway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The launch followed the opening of the Rideau Canal for this season on May 18 and celebrated the arrival of 16 new Horizon boats to Le Boat's new North American headquarters in Smiths Falls, and is the culmination of a multi-year undertaking to expand operations to North America. The grand opening celebrations included one of the hallmarks of any boat launch, a celebratory champagne christening of Le Boat's fleet. Christening activities were presided over by the godparents of the fleet, Smiths Falls may-
or, Shawn Pankow; executive director Ontario and Waterways, Parks Canada, Darlene Upton, accepted by Jewel Cunningham director, Ontario Waterways; and Le Boat project manager, Shannan Brennan. Each played a pivotal role in the initiative. "We're very excited to finally see this day come to fruition, and the first of Le Boat's Horizon fleet heading out on cruises on the Rideau Canal," said Cheryl Brown, global managing director for Le Boat, "This celebration not only marks the expansion of Le Boat's operations, but also recognizes the tremendous amount of effort and collaboration from Le Boat staff and our partners." The event gave the Le Boat's global team of sales and marketing staff from around the world, an opportunity to thank Le Boat's Ca-
nadian partners, and showcased some of the uniquely Canadian experiences Le Boat cruisers can expect while travelling on the Rideau Canal and Waterway. Live music by the Rideau Roundtable Voyageur singers and award-winning fiddler Peter Dawson added a truly Canadian flair to the event, while a Rideau Canal Marketplace featured local artists and unique food and drink artisans; a glimpse at what Le Boat cruisers can expect to experience during their travels. A small marketplace represented communities all along the Rideau, Ottawa to Kingston. Guests enjoyed fine foods from: Wendy's Country Market, Chuckles Jack restaurant, From the Ground Up Culinary and Valley Custom Cutting - and tasty treats from C'est Tout Bakery,
Ridgway Confections, and Temple's Sugarbush. The Smiths Falls & District Arts & Culture Council, and Gray Art Glass Studio staged an outdoor gallery of local fine art and glass. Microbreweries and distillers were also on hand with delicious samples of craft beers and spirits. They included: Perth Brewery, Top Shelf Distillers, Flying Canoe Hard Cider and 4 Degrees Brewing Company. Guests were invited by booming proclamation from Kingston's town crier to follow the Smiths Falls Gordon Pipe Band pipers down the path to Smiths Falls brand-new docks at Victoria Basin. Here they witnessed Brown and godparents cut a ribbon to officially open Canadian cruising and enjoyed evening rides on the new Horizon fleet. "We planned an exciting
day of activities highlighting the unique sights, sounds, and flavours of the Rideau Canal and Waterway," Brown said, "We were delighted to showcase our operations here in North America. This was a day for celebration!" Brewery, Top Shelf Distillers, Flying Canoe Hard Cider and 4 Degrees Brewing Company. TOLEDO WOMAN WINS BIG

Tentative settlement reached quickly by CP Rail workers EVELYN HARFORD eharford@metroland.com More than 3,000 Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail workers across the country walked off the job late Tuesday night, May 29, including some 77-85 employees in Smiths Falls. A tentative negotiated settlement was reached in mid-afternoon on Wednesday, May 30. "Following a very long and productive night and morning we were able to achieve a tentative negotiated settlement with the company including the Kootenay Valley Railway," according to the negotiations bulletin sent out to members. "We (Teamsters) are satisfied that our issues have been addressed." The company announced a tentative fouryear agreement with CP conductors and locomotive engineers and a five-year
agreement with Kootenay Valley Railway conductors and locomotive engineers, ending both strikes that had been on since May 29. The final timelines have yet to be determined for the ratification process. Operations were back to normal by 6 a.m. local time, in every time zone across the country. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference said its workers walked out at 10 p.m. EDT as negotiations continued with the company with the assistance of federal mediators. "First and foremost, we're asking for respect from the employer," said local Teamsters representative and locomotive engineer, Robert Hewitt, prior to the tentative settlement. "We have the right to bargain in good faith." Train operators voted 94 per cent in favour of strike action to back their con-
tract demands in early April and voted 98 per cent to reject CP's final offer on Friday, May 25. Workers in Smiths Falls were picketing outside their CP Rail building on Victoria Avenue on Tuesday, May 29. Hewitt said the Smiths Falls contingent is on the same page with the rest of the company with what they're asking for, including a comprehensive fatigue management plan to be negotiated and applied consistently. Hewitt expressed that the strike could have an impact on the local economy. "We contribute to its (the town's) bottom line the same as everybody else here," he said. "When we're not working, we're not spending." Hewitt said he expects the strike may last about five to seven days - depending on the federal govern-
ment's willingness to allow the negotiating process to unfold as mandated by the Canada Labour Code. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on May 29 that the federal government wouldn't be rushed into introducing back-towork legislation, instead preferring to employ various levers to motivate both sides to reach a settlement. This strike is not impacting commuter trains. Farmers have raised concerns about the work stoppage after coming off of a winter when shipping was disrupted due to extreme cold. Hewitt pointed out that, while farmers will be impacted, so too will any company that relies on the railway to transport products. "You name it, anything you would by at Canadian Tire, Walmart, or anywhere, at some point was on a train," he said.

Some of the kittens in the care of Furry Tales Cat Rescue and Donna MacRae.
There is so much that can be said for animal rescues. Locally, one such rescue lost a family of kittens, along with its mother, recently to distemper. It could have been prevented, said the rescue's owner/operator, Donna MacRae, had a proper isolation room been available. MacRae has done so much for abandoned, sick, helpless felines in Smiths Falls and area. She started Furry Tales Cat Rescue, now a registered charity, in 2015. She works with a team of volunteers whose primary goal is to assist cats (older and middle aged) who have been displaced, abandoned or at high risk of being euthanized in the pound system. Now, MacRae needs the public's help to build an isolation room where sick cats and kittens will get the care they need before being integrated into their forever homes. "We are seeking your help in building an isolation room to pro-
FIREWORKS
tect incoming cats from viral infections," MacRae wrote in an email to this newspaper. Furry Tales Cat Rescue already has a small cattery that is used to assess a rescue, where they are held - sometimes months at a time - until adopted. "Without a proper isolation room we risk viral diseases being passed to other cats in our facility. While it is great that we have a small building for our rescues, the problem we face is that there are times when we get a sick cat or kitten and they need to be quarantined," she stated. MacRae said the new building will allow the rescue to house cats and kittens safely and to ensure that whatever sickness they have does not threaten the other healthy cats. A recent outbreak of panleuk (distemper) resulted in the loss of 18 kittens. "We simply cannot bring in more cats without a secure and sterilized isolation room," she wrote. Furry Tales Cat Rescue has
rescued over 1,200 cats and kittens from dire circumstances abandoned, discarded, left to fend on their own. The rescue has taken seniors, cats abandoned in apartments when the owners moved and have given them full vetting and the chance of adoption. "We have improved the lives of over 1,000 families who have benefited from the love and companionship our Furry Tales Cats offer. We want to keep helping them!" How you can help The rescue has secured a building partner, Jamie Sels, who has offered labour at cost - no profit. A local building supply company has quoted $5,700 for materials so total cost will be $8,500. If you can help - even a little bit - donations can be sent via PayPal or e-transfer to Furrytalesrescue@gmail.com or through the new campaign at chuffed.org/ project/project-healthy-cats. Tax receipts will be issued. Cheques can also be mailed to Furry Tales Rescue, 101 Salter Lane, RR 3, Smiths Falls, Ont., K7A 4S4.

The SFDCI varsity rugby team shows off their broze medals from the OFSAA competition
Bronze medal for Smiths Falls Collegiate girls' rugby team The Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute girls' varsity rugby team earned bronze this week at the OFSAA Girls' A/AA Rugby Championship in Stratford. The RedHawks defeated Trenton High School 32-10 on Wednesday to earn their medal. Coach Jacob Swarbrick said he was proud his girls won bronze, but
added it was bittersweet after narrowly missing the gold-medal game. The RedHawks fell 19-15 to Bayside Secondary School of Belleville in the semifinals. This is the second year in a row SFDCI earned bronze at the tournament. The coach said there were several factors that played into the team's success. "It was, in large part, the team's
physical strength and conditioning," said Swarbrick. "We also won bronze last year so we've been in the big games before." Leadership by players Amy Wynne and Sierra DeVries helped maintain the team's composure during the competition and gave confidence to SFDCI's younger players. – submitted UCDSB
A euchre tournament set up by friends and supporters of a lung transplant patient has delivered a good hand of cash. The tournament collected $3,593 for Jacqui Bowick-Sandor and "it turned out really well," said co-organizer Donna Fleming, on the morning of Monday, June 11. She stressed that "100 per cent of the proceeds," go to Bowick-Sandor, for "whatever she needs." The event was held on Sunday, June 10, in the upper hall of the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre, and featured not only 64 card players but also a silent auction.

Men's night results from Smiths Falls The June 14 edition of the Smith Falls Golf & Country Club's Thursday Night Men's Twilight was almost a wash out, with the intermittent rain making the evening a bit challenging. But enough of the hardcore patrons showed up determined to play the front nine, so the scramble format was on and we braved the elements. It was either that or go home. Exactly. Geoff Watson, Hugh Gillespie, Rick Thompson, and Mike Milks proved they aren't made of sugar, posting the low score of the evening. Links golf is in their blood! The Roosteraunt closest to the pin prize went to George Thomson for his tee shot on hole 3. Scott Devonshire won the Milano's Pizza Prize for hitting it close on hole 8. And the Valley Custom Cutting gift certificate went to Adam Schofield for his beauty on hole 9. The Town and Country Chrysler longest drive of the evening belonged to Rod Parent. He took it deep on hole 5. The fabulous test of skill was performed by Steve Blair and Mike Patti. Their duet of Singing In The Rain was simply amazing! This week's Rocky's Road Rash ball went to Rick Murphy. He'll try for a hole in one to win the $15,000 Hunt and Dopson Prize at the closing. Good luck! Last week's Obsessed With Golf trivia question: What exactly was a stymie? Answer: C. Blocking an opponent's path to the hole with your ball. This week's question: In 1947, at the first

25th annual Smiths Falls Cancer Classic raises $30,000 after suffering personal losses. Blair has lost his mother, his father-in-law and several hockey players he knew to cancer. Merpaw lost his first and second wife to cancer. The Cancer Classic got its start when Merpaw was approached by the Lanark County unit of the Canadian Cancer Society in hopes that he would help raise funds. At the time golf tournaments weren't very popular, but Merpaw had seen first hand success and volunteered to host one in Smiths Falls on the Canadian Cancer Society's behalf. Merpaw recruited his family and friends like Blair and the initial committee - made up of Betsy Currie, Doug Peace, Peter Whitehead, Red Blair, Rick Plontz, Joanne Keays, and Merpaw. The first year, $5,000 was raised. And, so, the Cancer Classic was born. Twenty-five years later, they're still at it. "Cancer touches everybody," said Merpaw.
EVELYN HARFORD eharford@metroland.com A serious cause celebrates its silver anniversary. The Cancer Classic golf tournament held at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club on Saturday, May 26 raised $30,000 - the most money raised in the event's history. The tournament, now in its 25th year, is approaching $500,000 raised for the Canadian Cancer Society. "That's pretty big," said Daryl Black, a committee member. "We were very pleased with how the tournament went." The long-standing charity tournament has maintained its momentum largely due to the widespread impact of cancer on local families. "Everybody has a story," said Black. In 1993, Graham Merpaw and Glenn (Red) Blair made a commitment to fight back against cancer

Bob Mulrooney, chairperson of the Smiths Falls Cancer Classic (left), stands with Doug Kane, senior manager of community for the Canadian Cancer Society. The 25th annual Cancer Classic was held at the Smiths Falls Golf & Country Club on Saturday, May 26, 2018. This year, the tournament raised $30,000. "That's why the tournament is so successful." According to the Canadian Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and is responsible for 30 per cent of all deaths. One in two Canadians is expected to develop cancer during their lifetime and
one in four Canadians is expected to die from cancer. And while this may seem grim, the Canadian Cancer Society notes that the overall cancer survival rate has increased from about 25 per cent in the 1940s to 60 per cent today. In 2016, thanks to the charitable contributions of
our donors, including donations raised in Smiths Falls, the Canadian Cancer Society has invested $40 million in cancer research. "Cancer outcomes are changing," said Doug Kane, community office manager at the Canadian Cancer Society, who was in attendance at the Smiths
Falls Cancer Classic. "A lot of it is due to events like this." Kane said the long legacy of the Cancer Classic in Smiths Falls is unique in eastern Ontario. "It's a testament to the people and the community who have rallied behind the cause," he said. "It's one of the highlights of our calendar." Black thanked all the sponsors, volunteers and participant who helped make the 2018 Cancer Classic happen. "We wouldn't be able to do what we do without them," he said. The golf tournament is looking for committee members and volunteers for next year's event. Black said the organizers need both golfers and non-golfers. "We need help," he said. ie franchise dear to Parker's heart - and will bear signage telling the young boy's story. "When we started this process, it was out of sadness and grief and wanting to do something to acknowledge that he was a part of our lives," said principal Monique Antoine-Hartley. "Now we have moved through that and it has become about honouring Parker and celebrating his life. "It's just so amazing how one little boy has touched so many people's lives." The $22,800 cost is being paid for through proceeds of a successful fundraising drive last spring and summer. A teacher and a student pledged to shave their heads in return for donations. The school also held a Toonie Toss, a Fun Day, and benefitted from the proceeds of the 2017 Brian Burtch Memorial Dance. A large number of personal donations were also received in Parker's memory. Construction on the pavilion is expected to be finished shortly. Signage will be added to the structure and there will be a dedication ceremony in the fall. – submitted by UCDSB

Newest inductees of Smiths Falls Recreation Hall of Fame announced
Newest inductees of Smiths Falls Recreation Hall of Fame announced The newest inductees will be marshalled into the Hall of Fame at the 36th annual induction ceremony at the end of the month. The four inductees are: WILLIAM MICHAEL HAYES Hayes was born and raised in Smiths Falls and as with most kids of his generation, learned to skate on the backyard rink built by his Dad. Growing up at the end of Jasper Avenue, "Jasper" (his nickname) was able to walk to the frozen Rideau for shinny games. Hayes started his SFMHA days with the Peanut Division Montreal Canadiens and he capped it off by winning the ODMHA Midget Championship in 1972. He received Outstanding Athlete Awards in hockey (1972), ball hockey (1973) as well as the Don Thomson Memorial Award. Like his Dad, former Rideau Bill Hayes, Hayes' fearless and tenacious approach to the game made him a favourite of his coaches. He captained and was the leading scorer for the Perth Blue Wings and was selected to the Ottawa Valley Junior League All Star Team in 1974. While attending McGill University, Hayes played for the varsity team and was captain for two years. His coach at McGill compared his style of play to that of Philadelphia Flyers captain, Bobby Clarke. While attending the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario, Mike played intermediate
hockey, winning the 1978 OHA Southern Ontario Championship with the Dorchester Dolphins. He led the team in scoring and also received rookie of the year. Hayes finished his playing career with a championship in the Ottawa RA over 40 league. In 1987, Hayes was instrumental in the formation of the New Zealand Ice Blacks Hockey Team, who competed for the first time in Olympic D pool qualification in Perth, Australia. Hayes has coached hockey at all levels, boys and girls, from initiation to competitive to the OHA Port Stanley Jr. Lions. He coached his daughter's team alongside Brad Marsh to produce a championship in the Ottawa league. As a longtime high school hockey coach, he was proud to take both the Sacred Heart Huskies boys and girls teams to OFSAA, winning the girls D division in 2001. He continues to volunteer behind the bench at Notre Dame High School. Hayes got his start as an instructor with Howie Meeker Hockey Schools in 1976 and conducted on-ice clinics for the Ottawa District Hockey Association. He also referees high school hockey in Ottawa and serves as referee in chief for three Kanata men's leagues. Hayes organizes an annual hockey game in Smiths Falls in memory of his son, Connor, in association with a Huskies Alumni game in Ottawa. The proceeds from these games provide an annual scholarship at Sacred Heart High School, assist-
ing student athletes with their post-secondary education. Hayes considers this to be his greatest hockey accomplishment. KEITH HOLBROOK Holbrook began his love for all sports at an early age, and throughout his school years, excelled at each one. He participated in many sports during those years, including baseball, soccer, track and field, wrestling and football, with many championships and individual awards. But his love was hockey. His hard-working determination, skill and love for the game placed him on the all star teams each year, with many tournament wins and individual trophies. In his peewee year, Holbrook's team had six tournament wins, along with winning league champions. He was awarded the most aggressive peewee player award that same year. In his bantam year, he was the top scorer with 40 points in 29 games, and also received the best backchecker award. Holbrook was definitely a two-way player. His team captured five tournament wins, along with finalists at the Silver Stick tournament. In 1975, his midget team won the Pembroke Invitational Art Bogart Tournament A champs, and Holbrook was named the most valuable forward. In 1975, he moved to the Bears Tier II Jr. A league for the first half of the season, then returned to the midget all stars for scouting purposes. There he excelled, scoring 87 points in 67 games, ending the season as

the third highest scorer while only playing half a season with the team. In 1976, Holbrook was invited to training camps for the Soo Greyhounds, Sudbury Wolves, Ottawa 67's and the Toronto Marlies. At only 16 years of age, he was drafted in the fifth round to the Toronto Marlies Tier I, being the only rookie forward kept by the Marlies. He was placed with the Markham Waxers, and played there until December when an injury sidelined him. He returned to Smiths Falls, and eventually played for the Nepean Raiders, and later with the Brockville Braves. On June 23, 1978, Holbrook received an invitation to sign up for the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team Canada Summer Training Camp, but having received a scholarship to Acadia University, Holbrook headed to Nova Scotia to obtain a business degree. He played on the varsity team, was in the top five in scoring each year, along with being an all star team forward twice and Outstanding Offensive Player. During his time at Acadia, Holbrook was scouted by the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wanting to complete his business degree, he remained in school. After university, Holbrook returned to Smiths Falls to lead the senior Rideaus from '82 to '84. He continues to play hockey in the recreation league in Cobourg, where he contributes back by supporting minor athletics in the town.
KATHRYN RYAN Ryan has been involved in the world of recreation as an athlete, coach, volunteer and organizer. She has been dedicated to the advancement of women in sport. As an athlete, Ryan was a varsity level gymnast at the University of Western Ontario. In her summers off, from 1979-1983, she earned an Ontario grant to start the Summer Sommees Gymnastics Club where she coached over 80 children. It was during her university years when Ryan played her first hockey game, where all the women wore figure skates and no one had played before. This was where her love of hockey began. When she returned to Smiths Falls, she joined the only competitive women's hockey team available, the Dragons. This team eventually collapsed and finding no other options, she realized the importance of a women's hockey league in Smiths Falls. In 1991, Ryan organized, managed and began to play for the Smiths Falls Senior B Wildcats, and still plays for them today. Not only did Ryan participate as a player, she coached the Wildcats, along with several Smiths Falls Cubs teams from novice to peewee. During these years, she was the only female coach in the Cubs organization. She served as an executive board member and certified trainer in addition to her coaching duties. In 2008 and 2009, Ryan chaired the Cubtown Women's Hockey Tournament which hosted over 50 girls teams. In 2009, she
was able to obtain a $25,000 Trillium Grant for the development of female hockey players and hockey coaches in our region. Ryan is an accomplished water skier, having won the bronze medal at the Canadian National Waterski Championships as well as a gold medal at the Eastern Canadian Waterski Championship in 2008. She also assisted with the creation of the Chimo Elementary School Cheerleading Team, helping with coaching, fundraising, uniforms and transportation. Remembering her own struggles to find a hockey team to play on in Smiths Falls, Ryan set out to create a place for women of all abilities to play in an organized hockey league. She founded the Rideau Women's Hockey League which, over the 10 years it has run, has grown to include six full teams averaging approximately 100 players per year. Games run weekly with an end of year tournament and banquet. It is an established league with the Canadian Adult Recreation Hockey Association. Ryan has dedicated hundreds of hours to the creation and maintenance of this league, simply to provide a place for women to come together in a sport that they all love. 1978 BRADLEY'S FLYERS BROOMBALL TEAM The induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre.Submitted by the Smiths Falls Recreation Hall of Fame

ROARING INTO RETIREMENT As I embark on this new chapter of my life called Retirement, I can’t help but recognize the outstanding people that have been part of my Nursing journey. As an RPN at Lanark Lodge for 35 years, I have had the privilege of working with incredible staff. My interaction with every department throughout the years only confirms the utmost appreciation and respect I have for each and everyone of you. I want to thank you for all you do in your work and for you to know that it’s been an absolute honour to have worked alongside you all these past many years. My hope for you is that you continue to be proud of the work you do, the person you are and the difference you make. Another special part of my work life and heart has been the relationships I have formed with our residents and their families. This is what got me up and going every day. They are why I do what I do and I am so fortunate that I have been able to do this for 35 years. Now, onto the next adventure and chapter of Retirement life. Cheers Cindy Young RPN

November 2, 1929 May 28, 2018 Henry passed away peacefully at home in Carleton Place on Monday, May 28th. Born in Holbaek, Denmark, he chose to make Canada his new home and moved here in 1952 with Bente Jorgensen, where they settled and raised their four children on Grandview Road. An entrepreneur extraordinaire, Henry successfully established businesses both in Ottawa and on Vancouver Island. An avid outdoorsman and carpenter by trade, he built Pan-Abode log homes, flew his own float plane to build cottages in eastern Ontario and Quebec, traveled internationally to teach others about constructing log homes, and entertained guests from around the world at a bed and breakfast he and wife of 42 years, Patricia, ran in Victoria. Never one to let any moss grow under his feet, Henry always said there could only be one boss and he lived life his way. Survived by his wife, Patricia, his children [Anita, Kathy (Mark), Sonja (Grant), Brian and Teri], his grandchildren [Davin, Kirsten (Richard), Brett, Braden and Ryley], and his great-grandchildren [Torben and Tecwyn]. He leaves behind of legacy of what it means to live your life to the fullest. He always said he wished he could do it one more time because he had so much fun. We should all be so lucky! Henry’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at 244 William Street in Carleton Place. We invite all who were fortunate enough to have had an opportunity to get to know Henry in some way to join us and share stories and memories. Please stop by and enjoy some Danish-style smorgasbord, the meal he enjoyed the most, and lift a glass and skål the memory of a man who will be missed by many. An RSVP to sonja.garvey@live.ca would be appreciated, but is not essential. We look forward to seeing everyone.

To Mom With Love Norma Rogers - June 17, 2017 Dearest Mom: We want to thank you for all the years we spent together. We miss you every day but gather strength from your memory and the courage to carry on without you here. You instilled a strong will within us and a sharp wit. This gives us the ability to strive to be the best we can be and carry on the family legacy with dignity, strength and pride. This first year without you has been difficult. So many little things bring a smile to our faces which helps to wipe away the tears. We know you are still here, we see the signs. Mom, we will always love you and will never forget as you are our heart and soul and never truly gone because you live within us. Till we meet again Love, Judy, Kevin, Donna, Iris
