proximately 9:07 p.m., police were called to attend a disturbance on Main Street West. Police say an investigation revealed that one of the involved individuals, a 47-year-old male suspect of Smith Falls, was breaching his recognizance of bail and probation order release conditions. The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest and held for a bail hearing to answer to these charges.

Smiths Falls police charge man with drug offence On Saturday, July 28, at approximately 2:49 a.m., Smiths Falls police attended a call for service on Beckwith Street North for a report of an injured male. Police said they located a 29-year-old male of Smith Falls, injured and intoxicated. The male was transported to hospital by ambulance to treat his injuries. Police say "a quantity of a controlled substance"

was located on the man while in hospital. The male was later arrested for possessing a controlled substance once medically cleared. He was released by way of a promise to appear in court and officer in charge undertaking to answer to this charge. The charges in any of these matters have not been proven in court. The Smiths Falls Police Service urges anyone with further information regarding this incident, or similar incidents, to contact our service at 613-2830357. COUNCIL

FUTURE OF SMITHS FALLS' WATERFRONT IN VISIONING PHASE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Floating restaurants, illuminating the falls, revitalizing the abandoned lock, oh my. There are lots of ideas for the future of Smiths Falls' waterfront. In March, a full day "visioning workshop" was held with various stakeholders to bring together government at all levels and the private sector to explore and identify ideas for "placemaking" along the Rideau Canal. The results of the workshop were presented to Smiths Falls council at their committee of the whole meeting on Monday, July 23, by the town's chief administrative officer, Malcolm Morris. The goal of the brainstorming workshop was to better understand the context for the Rideau Canal within Smiths Falls: 1) To learn about global canal development and local ideas for tourism attraction and innovation

2) To apply placemaking principals to the Rideau Canal. 3) To brainstorm on uses, activities, amenities and features that would position the Smiths Falls waterfront to be a highly desirable destination. The exercise resulted in 90 suggestions to enhance the waterfront and the Rideau Canal's tourism draw in Smiths Falls - including the possibility of lighting up the falls and the canal, having a floating restaurant, and turning the very unique abandoned lock into an attraction by potentially turning it into a performance space. "It's not just a physical place to be, but it's a place to build social and emotional ties," said Morris. "It's a place that people locally hold dear to their heart, and tourists will talk about and come from a long distance to experience something unique. The abandoned lock the best example of a very, very

unique feature, nobody else has that - we do." Other ideas for the waterfront, which came out of the brainstorming, included more accommodation including higher end accommodation, farmers' market around the water, having live theatre performances, offering inflatables - like a trampoline - in the water, creating more recreational and waterbased activities like paddling, illuminating the falls above the dam structures, lighting up the canal or the Bascule Bridge, creating more places for people to walk and sit. Additionally, there were also suggestions for enhancing the canal side experiences through art, theatre, buskers, festivals and opening the Parks Canada Museum, which now functions as a visitor's centre. "The group felt that this was a missed opportunity," said Morris. "It was a beautiful museum at one time. I took my kids there, they

loved it." The raw list of ideas will be narrowed down by council to allow the town to focus on key priorities. These key priorities should also focus around the creation of "10 things to do" in Smiths Falls and area. Morris said there could be priority put on marketing the hiking in the area by promoting the access to the Cataraqui Trail, Rideau Trail and the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail. Increasing tourist development potential of the Rideau Canal to benefit all stakeholders is a goal of the town's official plan. Waterfront development to improve the facilities, services and public access to the waterfront is in the strategic plan. Listed with the town's approved strategic plan are tasks that include the redevelopment of the former water treatment plan, relocation of Victoria Park Campground, water-based infrastructure (including

docks, boat launching), and open visual connections to the Rideau. "We have a beautiful waterfront, it's not obvious when you come into town," said Morris. "And, it really is, and could be, a magnet for people to stop and get out of their vehicles and open their wallet and look around." The downtown revitalization and waterfront integration master plan also prioritizes waterfront revitalization which strives to protect and enhance the unique natural environment and extensive cultural heritage. The plan also provides a strong framework for social interaction, land and water-based recreation and tourism and encourages mutually supportive investment in the public realm and private development sites. This visioning exercise and the long-term plans will act as the framework moving forward to create a cohesive environment in-

stead of piecemeal development. "We want to look at it as a whole to make sure those attractions stitch together to form a much stronger whole," said Morris. Right now, he said, while town might be perfectly geographically positioned to take advantage of the Rideau Canal as a tourism draw, it needs to work to position itself from a branding perspective. Ten years after the Rideau Canal was given UNESCO designation, some feel that the town could be promoting itself and leveraging the asset better. But, said Morris, the town can't do this alone and will also be relying on private sector investment and government grants to help make the vision a reality. The guiding principles for the waterfront development include connecting waterfront sites with the urban environment by conSee IDEAS, page 19

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Canada Homestay International, a non-profit organization that works with the Upper Canada District School Board, is in need of more host families for international students to stay with when they come to the local area. Mary Clayson, a relationship manager with Canada Homestay International, says the organization is in desperate need of hosts in some specific areas. "We really, really need hosts in Almonte," she said. Four students, coming from China, Italy and Spain, will be heading to Almonte this August - but still need host families. “Although there is a desperate need in Almonte, Clayson said, there is need specifically for international students that will be

attending high schools in North Grenville, Carleton Place, Perth, and Smiths Falls. "We're always looking for hosts," said Sonja Robert, also a relationship manager with Canada Homestay International. "People's situations always change." Canada Homestay International explains that hosting an international student helps to promote understanding and acceptance of other cultures among the community's youth, as well as showcasing to foreign students all the wonderful aspects of the communities that they stay in. INCREASE FINES FOR BUTTHEADS One of our reporters had every reason last week to fume upon seeing a smouldering cigarette butt lying on the gravel shoulder of a local road, likely thrown out of a passing car's window. Prior to recent rains, the woods and fields throughout the Ottawa Valley were tinder dry. In fact, Mississippi Mills remains under a partial burn ban. Several fires broke out in Lanark County, including a 10-acre blaze on a farm outside of Perth, as well as the loss of livestock and a barn in a July 17 Toledo fire. So with the possibility of forest fires so high, it's plain stupid to flip cigarette butts into the grass or bush along our roadways. And illegal too. Fortunately more and more smokers realize that it's not acceptable to leave their butts lying around. Remember when gathering places in our communities had piles of butts littered outside after a major event. Gross. Especially for those tasked with cleaning them up. Now most smokers deposit their butts in receptacles provided for their convenience. But there are still those who think it's acceptable and safe to litter the landscape with their butts. They seem to think that one cloudburst will erase all worries about roadside fires. However, it's apparent that while Smiths Falls can get a dousing, an area a few kilometres down the road can be missed completely by the storm. Our careless smokers seem to believe that because of our deciduous forests Ontarians don't face the danger from fire they do in B.C. and Alberta. Wrong. Serious forest fires up the line from Petawawa and now in the Parry Sound area have affected traffic and air quality in those areas. It's just fortunate no homes have been lost, so far. Last summer's devastating fires in British Columbia and Alberta sparked those provinces to crack down on motorists who throw 'lit debris' out their windows. In B.C. fines under the wildlife and highway acts can range from $175 to $575 for offenders. Vancouver has boosted the fine to $500 for those drivers caught "tossing smoking material in a hazardous way." Willow Creek in Alberta has instituted fines from between $500 and $10,000 if your butt starts a bush or grass fire. And it's not just Canada. Washington State has boosted the fine to $1,025 during fire bans. The $500 fine in Western Australia rises up to a maximum of $25,000 and/or 12 months in jail if the offence happens during fire season. Ontario's police tend to levy littering fines ranging from $110 to $180 if they notice flagrant instances. As the danger from forest fires grows in Ontario, it's time the province follows the lead of many other jurisdictions in giving police the discretion of imposing much higher fines if butts are thrown out during a fire ban. The danger is real. That has to be impressed on the few who are still oblivious to how perilous and unsightly their habit is of improperly discarding cigarette butts.

Ford, Gwen and Lexi are three of my favourite "humans." Ford, or Sweet Baby as you all know him, is a Newfoundlander. Gwen, my mom, is not - she's just feisty and doesn't care what she says or who hears her otherwise! One day I hope to be just like her. Heck, who am I kidding, I am already there! And Lexi, of course, is my doggy child who keeps us on our toes. Nope, she's not a TV-watching dog, my wonderful vet, Kevin, told me when she was just a wee lassie. Between the three of them, there is never a dull

moment. It's a sideshow half the time. The other half, I'm trying to figure out what one said, or the other meant, or I'm on a road/foot tour with Lexi. Get Sweet Baby on the phone with one of his sisters and I have no idea what they're talking about. (Side bar, I think we are married ... pretty sure he said 'I do.') Mom was visiting recently, and was sitting at the kitchen table. Lexi, now 75 pounds of 'tude, was trying to get on her lap, or at least up in her face for kisses. She loves her grandma and won't settle until Mom gives her some attention. "Go sit down dog, you're worse than your mother! Pacing and yapping."

agree with Mom or his wife (I think we're married ... see above). "No comment," he says, smiling. It is true: I am like my dog - yappy, protective and ferocious - and I'm OK with that. But she's also like Sweet Baby, who loves a good steak. He often saves her a sandwich from his lunch, but heaven forbid if he forgets. This causes sleep talking sometimes. "We've got to get that dog a steak," he said while in a deep slumber one night. "She's eating way too many sandwiches." COUNCIL

NEW LOCATIONS FOR CROSSING GUARDS IN SMITHS FALLS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com As the next school year grows closer, Smiths Falls considers crossing guard locations with the opening of the new Catholic elementary school closure of two others. Smiths Falls town staff proposed to keep four of the current five crossing guard locations - Russell and Elmsley, Brockville and Ross, McGill and Chambers and Queen and Anderson - and the addition of two more - one on a permanent basis and another on a temporary basis. The crossing guard review, in consultation with Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO), management team, police chief and fire chief, comes

as the new Catholic elementary school, St. Francis de Sales Catholic School on Ross Street, and the closure of St. James the Greater on Catherine Street and St. Francis on Elmsley Street. Nadine Bennett, the town's deputy clerk, reported at council's committee of the whole meeting on Monday, July 23, that due to the closure of St. James, a crossing guard will no longer be required at Brockville and Oak streets. Town staff have proposed the creation of a new crossing guard location at Broadview and Brockville Street to ensure that students attending Chimo or the new St. Francis on Ross Street can safely cross the busy intersection. "I'm confused about hav-

Lorraine Allen, who questioned what role the guard would have with there being traffic lights at the Broadview and Brockville location. "I've never seen that." Bennett said a guard will be placed there because there is concern, with it being such a busy intersection, that something could happen without someone placed there. She said the town's community safety officer from the Smiths Falls Police Service will be on hand to help educate children on proper road crossing practices. "We have a great community police officer who

helps educate the students," said Bennett, who reported that the officer will be helping to educate the children crossing to wait and cross in a group with the assistance of the crossing guard together. If there is need for an additional guard or no need for a guard at that location, the issue could come back to council again, she said. "We'll continue to monitor this," said Bennett, who stressed the importance of ensuring the safe passage of children across the town's many streets. Additionally, it was noted in the town's report presented to council that the intersection at Ross and

Percy streets is "very busy and congested" with traffic and pedestrians walking to Chimo with a "significant" number of children crossing the intersection - including concern about how the children were crossing. Town staff have proposed putting one of the town's backup crossing guards at this location starting at the beginning of the school year on a temporary basis to determine if there is a need for a permanent guard at Ross and Percy. The new crossing guard location at Ross and Percy Street will result in an expenditure of $2,532.54 from the 2018 budget. If council wants to maintain a permanent crossing guard at Ross and Percy streets, $8,232.77 will be added to the 2019 budget. Signage and pavement markings would be installed at an estimated cost of $1,500. Signage and pavement markings also may need to be installed at Brockville and Broadview. Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow wondered whether there had been consideration for a guard to assist the students coming in from the Merrick, Aberdeen area that come down Broadview and cross at Harold. Bennett said that, while there wasn't consideration for this particular crossing, it could be reviewed and monitored as the school year kicks into gear. Allen also raised concerns about the distance students will be walking

this fall. "Both Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and the Catholic system have increased the distance that young children have to walk," she said. "This September there will be more children walking and younger children walking than before." STEO's general manager/chief administrative officer, Janet Murray, explained in an email to this newspaper that the walk distance has changed for students in grades 7 and 8 only and has been increased by 400 metres, to align with the secondary panel walk distance of two kilometres for grades 9 to 12. The walk zone for students in the primary panel, from JK to Grade 6, remains unchanged, she said. The walk zones are as follows: grades JK-3: 800 metres and grades 4-6: 1.6 kilometres. "Changes to transportation policies are approved by the STEO board of directors, which is comprised of representatives of both CDSBEO (Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario) and UCDSB," said Murray. "STEO and the boards understand that transportation is an important service for students and families. In the face of rising transportation costs, we remain committed to ensuring that safe, reliable transportation service remains available for eligible families and for those who need it most."

URBAN JUNGLE OCR SET TO CONQUER THIRD YEAR EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Are you ready to conquer the jungle? The Urban Jungle Obstacle and Fitness Challenge is taking over Smiths Falls on Sunday, Aug. 12, for the third time, thanks to the initiative and efforts of powerhouse couple John and Maria Maloney and their supporters. "This is a really exciting year," said Maria. "It's really turned into a nice family event." This year, Obstacle Course Racing Academy, out of Ottawa, is bringing more obstacles to the already exciting, tough course. The jungle is a five-kilometre-plus race of cars, trains, walls, stairs, trails, water, roads, hills, obsta-

cles, and of course, mud. There's also an option for 10-km-plus run for those who want to go to the extreme. More than 300 people have registered so far. This year, a king and queen of the jungle will be awarded for coming in first place in the main event. "There is no second in the jungle," said John. But, remind the organizers, this obstacle course and fitness challenge is for all levels. Kids race for free. So far, more than 250 kids have participated. John said the race encourages kids to be physically active. "I think it's good encouragement," he said. And, say John and Maria, this event couldn't happen without the support of the community. "The community invol-

vement has been great," she said. All funds for this race will go to Lower Reach Park and other local charities. And this year, the anticipated fitness equipment for Lower Reach Park is expected to be installed. "People can finally see what the money is going to," said Maria. Art Manhire, the town's director of community services, is working to get the fitness equipment into the park. Manhire said the town has scouted some locations. "We wanted to have something close to the water," he said. The preferred location is adjacent to the beach and volleyball courts and the tennis courts. Once the type of equipContinued on page 13

ment is agreed upon, it will either go to tender or for council to solicit quotes to ensure a competitive process. The vision for the equipment is to have a circuit of static equipment, that uses your body weight for resistance and that works the whole body.

Manhire said the town is trying to install equipment that would be accessible for the entire community. The total project, which Manhire hopes to be installed this fall, is estimated to cost around $60,000 with funds to be contributed by the Urban Jungle and the Town of Smiths Falls.

Manhire reported that $47,000 was allocated for the project in the 2018 budget. A reserve from the Urban Jungle valued at about $13,000 has been earmarked for the project. "It (the fitness equipment installation) fits with what we're already doing with parks development," he said. "It's another com-

ponent for people to do in our parks." This year, the Urban Jungle is on course to raise about $10,000. The Urban Jungle has also contributed funds to Jumpstart, the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, the Gordon Pipe Band, St. John Ambulance, Rideau Search and Rescue,

and Smiths Falls & District Crimes Stoppers. This year, John said, the Jungle looks again to donate to local causes, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County, WAK Youth Program and others. All participants receive a T-shirt and a medal. Kids 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. Heats begin at 9:30 a.m. To contact the organizers, email at urbanjunglechallenge@outlook.com, or call at 613-430-4114. Call or text for kids promo code. For more information, or to register, visit www.theurbanjungleocr.com/.

mile to deliver exquisite service!

The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the job at hand as easy as possi-

ble. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves - raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't

for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thoroughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those Continued on page 15

very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough, they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the

kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors slanted against the side of the house. The cellar was nothing more than a pit dug out of the ground. How I hated to go down those few steps into that space under the house! My hateful brother Emerson said he knew for a fact snakes lived in the cellar, and he also said spiders as big as bullfrogs loved the damp darkness. Every year Father brought fresh sand from the gravel pit and replaced what was down there, and

this is where carrots and parsnips were buried, and most amazing to me, they never froze over the long winters. When Mother and Audrey finished, and all the jars were sealed tightly, Mother kept a bowl of chili sauce out for our supper that night. Father loved chili sauce but he didn't eat it like the rest of the family. He poured his into a fruit nappy and dipped thick slices of buttered fresh bread into it, and ate it that way. He never failed to say, 'By gar, that's good, let me tell ya', and the bowl would be empty by the time supper was over.

I would look over at all the sealers ready to be taken down to the cellar, and I would know, and be thankful, that that day's work would help us get through another winter. OPINION

Have you ever wondered how the world would be if every cultural and language barrier were broken and all people could communicate and get along? This question is especially relevant between the Canadian government and Indigenous people in Canada. My name is Cassi Bennett, and my school, Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) has been very eager to try to connect with a community in a very different part of Canada. Our project was to provide 14 Smiths Falls students and 12 Dene students from a fly-in community on a First Nations reserve in northern Saskatchewan the opportunity of a lifetime to meet each other and engage in an exchange trip to each others' homes for one week. Throughout a week in early June program, I was pleased to have had three beautiful, kind Dene girls staying in my home. We got to go to aquariums, museums, Parliament, shopping malls, and, my personal favourite, Wilderness Tours for the night and got to sit by the fire and get to know these student's culture and rituals a little better. We had an extraordinary time getting to know each other throughout the week they were here, and we are extremely excited to go to Fond du Lac Saskatchewan with them in September! Throughout the week, I learned a

lot about how different our cultures are, yet how amazing each one is in its own way. I learned about how close these students are with their elders and how much respect they had for each other and toward us. No matter how many hours you spend in a history class, it does not teach you as much as one week, hands on, with their beautiful culture. My partner told me about how crazy it is for them having access to a Tim Hortons in the morning, because in their community, the only place you can buy things are

EAT IT! Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season. Support your regional farmers and farming industry: buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods that have been shipped hundreds of kilometers to your local market.

at the Northern Store, a couple chip trucks, or online - which takes weeks to ship in. My partners also explained to me that since they live in such an isolated community of only about 800 people, the majority of the students on the trip were cousins. My partners and I got along very well, and at the end of the trip, one of my partners gave me a beaded dream catcher and told me that if I kept that, I would not forget her. Sending these kind-hearted students back to the airport was very emotional for a lot of us, as

we made sure to take lots of selfies with each other before they boarded their bus. The teachers, parents and students hosted a "going away brunch" with a couple fun slide shows made by Alexandra Suchan, a visiting student from Germany who is part of the project group and hopefully going to Saskatchewan. We all shared some yummy food to say goodbye to our new friends. Thanks to our Innovation grant, Experiences Canada and to our community for all the grants and donations we re-

ceived, we all got to make new lifelong friends and learn so many new things. I will never forget the moment we saw them coming down the escalator at the Ottawa airport, greeted by dozens of signs with their names on them! It sure was an experience and a half, and we are anxiously eager to go to their home town and be welcomed into their culture this upcoming fall!

“For the Future of Montague”

Klaas VanDerMeer For Deputy Reeve of Montague Township

As the candidate running for Re-Election of Deputy Reeve in the upcoming Montague Township election I would like to introduce myself to those you who do not know me and say thanks to those who do and have supported me in the last four years during my term as your Deputy Reeve. In the past four years we have had many challenges which I believe we were able to resolve with the support of the council, the office staff, and the residents of Montague Township. We have many excellent staff members who go above and beyond to keep us all working together with our council in making our township“Country Living at Its Best.” Thank you to those who have supported me in the past four years. I hope you will continue that support. To those who do not know me or supported me I would be happy to meet with you to discuss our visions for the future.

HUGE PRIZE TABLE FOR MEN'S LEAGUE GOLF AT SMITHS FALLS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB The Aug. 2 edition of the Thursday Night Men's Twilight at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club was sponsored by Corby Spirit and Wine Limited. A beautiful evening for golf and a huge prize table; it doesn't get any better. The scramble format was back, and the patrons were eager to play. Graham Merpaw, Colin Brown, Mike Patti, Billy Crawford, Jeff Jones, and Bob Gauthier showed they were "Wiser" golfers, posting the low score on the front nine. Mark Wiltsie, Jordan McKenna, Shane Johnson, and Curtis Kerfoot had a spirited back nine, also claiming victory. The Roosteraunt closest to the pin prizes went to Jack An-

derson and Shawn Crosby for their tee shots on holes eight and 14. Tim Seed and Dennis Moore took home the Burns Jewellers prizes for the best approach shots on hole four and 12. Travis Shelley won the Milano's Pizza prize for a great tee shot on hole three, the Valley Custom Cutting gift certificate went to Richard Crowe for his beauty on hole 16, and the Town and Country Chrysler longest drive of the evening was launched by Ryan Carty on hole five. The fabulous test of skill was performed by Mike Patti and Art Rent. Their ventriloquist act had the patrons in stitches. This week's Rocky's Road Rash ball went to Nic Vaillan-

court. He'll try for a hole in one to win the $15,000 Hunt and Dopson prize at the closing. Good luck! Last week's Obsessed With Golf trivia question: How many magnolia trees line the roadway at Augusta National? Answer: A. 61 This week's question: The highest average score of any round in a U.S. Open was a 93.0, which came in the first round. In which U.S. Open venue did this occur? A. Newport Golf Club, 1895 B. Chicago Golf Club, 1900 C. Myopia Hunt Club, 1898 D. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, 1896 See next week's article for the answer.

necting the downtown, including the town's cultural institutions such as the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario and Heritage House, to the waterfront through pedestrian, cycling and vehicle links as well as vehicular connections that the town says will develop a cohesive and permeable core area of Smiths Falls. In addition, Morris said the town could reconnect and strengthen access to public recreation areas along the canal by improving pedestrian connections across and around the canal, including the south side of the canal, and potentially relocating seasonal camping sites to another suitable area. The town says that this could help provide the opportunity to develop Victoria Park and surrounding public lands into premier waterfront areas for all people to enjoy. Coun. Joe Gallipeau took issue with the planned relocation of Victoria Park Campground listed in the town's strategic plan. "I don't remember that ever coming up at council," he said. Gallipeau said the town should invest in the Victoria Park to put in concrete pads for the RVs and maybe put in some sewer lines and do some work to make it a "first-class park." The chamber can't do much, or doesn't want to invest, because their lease is going to expire in December. Gallipeau said the town needs to look at making a decision on the park's location and lease agreement. Dawn Quinn said she is adamant about keeping the Victoria Park and adding "a wow factor." Quinn too said that she didn't remember the issue of moving the park coming before council.

Morris said council, which approved the strategic plan, could always choose to keep the campground in its current location and confirmed that the strategic plan is a living document. He said staff were working on the direction outlined within the plan.

FUTURE OF VICTORIA PARK CAMPGROUND The Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce, who run the Victoria Park Campground, came before council on Monday, July 16, to request an extension of their lease agreement in order to plan for the park's future. The chamber reported in their delegation to council that Victoria Park is a tourism asset for the town, attracting more than 10,900

overnight tourists in the 2017 season. Victoria Park attracts visitors from all over, including Ontario, Canada, North America and overseas. In June 2018, the park had 20 campers from across Canada including British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and New Brunswick, four campers from the United States, and 12 international visitors from Austria, Germany, Ireland and Australia. This year, the campground has also hosted one Le Boat client group and looking forward to hosting more. The chamber emphasized that the Victoria Park Campground provides much-needed accommodation options to support events happening in Smiths Falls - providing group blocks for event

such as the Spirit of the Drum Powwow, Rideau Rendezvous and Tweed's Front Yard Shindig 2018. Becky Allen, the chamber's executive director, explained that the campground has also provided short term accommodation to five Tweed employees, when housing was difficult to find in Smiths Falls. Allen explained that the campground has a "significant" economic impact on the town - especially because of their overnight visitors. Allen spoke about the future vision for the campground, including the potential to offer unique accommodations such as "untented tents" - little yurt cabins - more flattering landscaping by adding more greenery and improving on-

line booking capabilities. Barbara Black, the chamber's president, called the campground a "tremendous" asset to the town and community with an "invaluable" economic impact. "We must secure the future of Victoria Park Campground," she said. Black, and other chamber members in attendance at the July 16 meeting, were eager to get an answer from the town on their requested lease extension. The chamber's current lease agreement with the town expires on Dec. 31, 2018. "It's pretty obvious that the first thing to do first thing we need to do is get a lease for the chamber," said Coun. Jay Brennan. "We need to have some surety about Victoria Park." Victoria Campground will be brought up at a future committee of the whole meeting for discussion.

Turner Onion found his passion when a basketball was placed in his hands as a youngster. It all started at a hoops camp in Smiths Falls when he was in Grade 4. That camp was run by Coach Angel Valentin, a local (now retired) pastor. Valentin started the camp 15 years ago. "He was my mentor," Onion said. "With the basketball camp, he taught many life skills, not just basketball. He taught me how to be a good man." Raised by a single mom, Cindy, Turner said she did her best, but having that father figure in his camp coach helped him develop his passion for basketball, and some important life skills - which is the purpose of the camp. Turner, now 22, is a graduate of Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, where his older brother, Curtis - also a former RedHawks basketball playergraduated just ahead of him. He's been the director of Total Athlete Basketball Camp (TABC) for the past two years. High school coach, Todd Spen-

During the month of July, members of the Smiths Falls Police Service stopped youth who were seen wearing helmets while riding their bicycles. Officers then handed out coupons for frozen treats to the kids, under the age of 18, and there were also weekly prizes. The grand prize was two new bicycles donated by the Smiths Falls Canadian Tire store, and, out of 65 ballots entered, Coutts and Giff were the proud winners. The duo picked out their bikes on the morning of Friday, Aug. 3. "We could not have given them to two better kids," said community service office Aaron Tompkins. Under Ontario law, every cyclist under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet.

Joining them in the background are, from left, Smiths Falls Police Service Chief Mark MacGillivray, Canadian Tire employee Allan Chouinard, Deputy Chief Rick LaBelle, and Community Service Officer Aaron Tompkins. Emily and Ayden were the winners of the bicycle helmet safety draw for two new bikes for 2018.

Since we lost you, Life has never been the same. In our hearts your memory lingers, Sweetly tender, fond and true. There is not a day, dear Whammy, That we do not think of you. Forever Loved and Missed Marsha, Jacob, Breah, Mike and Sophia Jackie and Dennis Tracy and Jeff, Dennis, Allison, Colton, Clark and Cain

CARROLL, Gerald In memory of a dear husband, father and grandfather Gerald Carroll who passed away 5 years ago on August 09, 2013.

10th ANNIVERSARY KATHY (FORBES) EVOY August 13, 2008 In memory of our beautiful daughter Kathy, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. A light from our family is gone, A voice we love is still, A place is vacant in our hearts, No one can ever fill. Life is eternal, Love will remain, In God’s own time, We will meet again. Lord put your arms around her, And kiss her smiling face, For she is very special, And can never be replaced. In our hearts and thoughts always Mom and Dad Pat and Sue Maya and Malcolm

SADLER - In loving memory of a dear Mother and Grandmother, Iva Margaret Sadler, who passed away August 2, 1988 Loving and kind in all her ways, Upright and just to the end of her days; Sincere and true, in her heart and mind, Beautiful memories, she left behind. Lovingly remembered by the family

Share your special moments with your friends and our readers with an announcement in Social Notes.

They say it’s a beautiful journey, From this world to the new. Some day I’ll make that journey, Which will lead me straight to you. And when I reach that garden, In which there is no pain. I’ll put my arms around you, And we’ll never part again. So loved & missed, Betty He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just kept right on working, For those he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And if he had some worries, They went unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation, Through all our storms of life, A sturdy hand to hold unto, In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, The man that we called DAD. In our hearts forever, Susan, Pat, Peter, Chris & families.

SUDOKU

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It can be challenging to silence your suspicious mind, Aries. Not everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Avoid gossip whenever possible, and you’ll be fine.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a prime time to nurture business relationships that could push your employment career into a new direction, Libra. There are many possibilities at your disposal.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Wear your heart on your sleeve, Taurus. Doing so may endear you to others. It may seem like you’re putting all your cards on the table, but you’re showing you’re genuine.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It can be difficult for your detailed-oriented self to draw the line at what to include in a task and what to leave out. You strive for perfection in all you do, Scorpio.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Toning things down is not necessarily your style, Gemini. But this week you may want to keep a few details to yourself. Maintain a low profile for the next few days.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are wondering if you should play it safe or dance closer to the edge this week, Sagittarius. It may be because you are feeling trapped by routine. Change can be good.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it is very easy to get wrapped up in the problems of others. But sometimes you have to let others work things out on their own. Offer advice if it is sought.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you want to be there for all the people who may need your assistance. But avoid stretching yourself too thin so you can approach each situation energetically.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, behind the big lion’s roar beats the heart of a pussy cat. Your sensitive side is bound to come through this week, when you may provide comfort to a person in need.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Choose your battles, Aquarius. There are not enough hours in the day to be an activist for every cause. Only select the ones that you truly feel strongly about.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 What you show to the public may not be the true Virgo you keep close to yourself. Let a few intimate details sneak out, and you may be surprised at the reactions.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Try not to record every moment on social media, Pisces. It’s good to leave an aura of mystery from time to time and enjoy the moments.
