AREA FIREFIGHTERS SALUTE LATE MONTAGUE FIRE CHIEF, RON HASKINS VETERAN FIREFIGHTER PASSED AWAY AUG. 5 AT AGE 73 ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Late Montague Township fire chief, Ron Haskins, was given a heartfelt send-off by his peers Thursday, Aug. 9. Haskins, 73, passed away Sunday, Aug. 5 in hospital in Kingston. He dedicated more than 40 years of service to the Montague Fire Department and had a helping hand in its inception on April 1, 1976. Thirty of those years were as chief. Haskins officially retired in September 2016. At 5:30 p.m., led by an escort from the Smiths Falls Police Service, more than a hundred firefighters from area brigades including Montague, Smiths

Falls, Carleton Place and BBD&E made the silent march from the Smiths Falls Fire Hall, along Beckwith Street North toward Blair & Son funeral home for Haskins' visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Another visitation was held earlier, from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral service was held at Blair & Son on Friday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. In an interview with the Smiths Falls Record News in July 2016, Haskins was proud of his final two equipment acquisitions for the fire department securing an ATV and creek truck, to assist with fighting bush fires. Haskins was also deeply involved in recreation within Smiths Falls and was a member of the inaugural Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears hockey team of 19611962. He played alongside late See COMMUNITY, page 11

LEEDS, GRENVILLE AND LANARK DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT REPORTS INCREASE IN OVERDOSES OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS IN TRI-COUNTY AREA Visit ucdsb.on.ca for details

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has issued an alert in response to an increase in opioid overdoses in the region. The health unit says they've received five overdose reports since July 26, and a total of eight reports in the last two weeks, including one suspected fatal overdose. In contrast, the health unit says that they've been averaging three to four overdose reports a month in 2018. Most of the overdose reports received in the past two weeks from Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark have been linked to the use of purple heroin, the health unit says. The health unit advises people to be aware and use safely since there has been an increase of drug overdoses in the area.

For 21-year-old Brandon Hill, the thought of having the first Pride in Smiths Falls is exciting. But, Hill says, that excitement comes with fear, too - fear that could hold him back from coming out to the Pride festivities. Hill, who grew up in Smiths Falls, wasn't until open with his sexuality until the end of high school, first coming out as gay to his supportive parents in 2015. "I was shocked when I saw there was going to be a Pride here," he said. "I was shocked but also excited - I was like finally, it's 2018. That's another reason why I'm kind of afraid for safety is just because it's 2018, it took this long to finally come here." Hill said right now he's unsure if he'll attend the first Pride festival in town because he fears there could be a risk to participants' safety, not just at the event, but also after the festivities have concluded if they're identified by people who aren't supportive. "Having those concerns are kind of crippling my ability to go - I'm in the middle," he said. Hill said that while he was in high school, he experienced moments where he realized that people weren't accepting of the LGBTQ+ community in Smiths

Falls- seeing homophobic and transphobic comments written on bathroom walls. "It's messed up," he said. "I feel like I'm very comfortable with myself. so it doesn't really affect me. But ... I don't want other people to get hurt and get triggered by certain things." That is also why, Hill said, Pride events are important.

However, said Perkins, when he was younger he would have never attended a Pride festival. Fast forward to today, and he's putting on a Pride festival in his hometown. "I'm not afraid about being open," he said. "I don't fear retaliation." "Anywhere you go in life, no matter who you are there's always going to be someone who doesn't like you. Just focus on who does." But, Perkins said, he acknowledges that coming out to a Pride event is a very personal thing for some. And, while Perkins doesn't know how the turnout will be for the inaugural Pride event, the support has been rolling in so far. The Urban Jungle Obstacle and Fitness Challenge returned to Smiths Falls on Aug. 12, offering fun for all ages and abilities and raising money for fitness equipment in Lower Reach Park and local charities. The popular event, now in its third year, is thanks to the creativity and efforts of local couple John and Maria Maloney and their supporters. John is a town councillor in Smiths Falls. Sunday's obstacle and fitness challenge was five kilometres (km); however, there was a 10 km option for those who wanted to go to the extreme. Over and above 300 people registered for the jungle in 2018, with many being children. Kids raced for free. The first run of the day was the King of the Jungle race.

BE PROUD, SMITHS FALLS EVELYN HARFORD ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY TO SHOW THEIR PRIDE While speaking to a young gay man, recently out, who grew up in small town eastern Ontario, I learned that being different in a small town was probably just as difficult and isolating as expected and why the inaugural Pride in small Smiths Falls is extremely important. In my life I've heard people ask: why do they even need a parade? So, here's my chance to answer as a life-long ally for the LGBT community. But, before I begin, I must acknowledge my privilege as a white, cisgendered woman in a heterosexual relationship. It's true that some people might not feel the need to have a Pride parade or festival. But they're missing the point. It's not about them at all. It's needed for a lot of people around the world and for reasons that rise above anyone's lack of comfort with, in most cases, what they don't know. When living in Toronto, I always attended Pride. It's a wonderful event to foster community, acceptance and support systems for the collective community. And, if we're honest, it's a great party. I'll never forget walking north on Yonge Street along the parade route at WorldPride, which Toronto hosted in 2014, trying to get to my friends who were closer to the gay village, located at Church and Wellesley my old neighbourhood. I walked through a sea of

people who fell everywhere on the spectrum of sexuality and gender. People were dressed up, colours were everywhere, water was raining down, the love and community in the air was palpable. That day, we watched the rest of the parade, and later, we danced in the streets and embraced each other for our differences - including people I didn't even know. The streets overflowed with over 12,000 of marchers and thousands of supporters - it was Pride on steroids. Bars in the area were flooded with good vibes, great people, and a spirit of not just tolerance, but true acceptance. Our voices dwarfed those who have ever try to silence or hurt us. I believe there were protesters there, but, to be honest, I don't remember - probably because they're not important and their opinions are mostly based on hate, bigotry and misguided religious beliefs. Pride isn't about one person. It's about what it means for those folks who might not feel supported, too. If the LGBTQ + community is more visible, especially in a small town, it can change people's lives who might be struggling in silence. So, Saturday, come out and support those in your community who need you. Be part of history the first Smiths Falls Pride parade and festival. Be a voice for acceptance and support. WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY RALLY 'ROUND THE FLAG Dear Editor, In the July 25 issue of the Smiths Falls Record News was a column written by Evelyn Harford with regards to the Confederate flag. A hobby of mine is the study of history and with that goes flags and of course, patriotic music hence my title. The Confederate States of America emerged through many differences with their government (the Union) not only slavery. Some being presidential term limits, state armies and who should have the right to levy tariffs and many more. With succession and a new country came a new flag, the stars and bars. Several thousands died for their belief. Were they all wrong? The United States government at the time called them rebels because of succession from the Union. (Rebels - the rebel flag, a symbol of rebellion.) From 3500 BC to present day, there have been many countries, many causes some good, some bad - and

rebellions have claimed millions of casualties along the way. The swastika was around for 5,000 years before the Nazis and is a sign of good fortune and prosperity in many countries and religions including Christian and is still used today. Due we ban the swastika symbols and the flags its on, due to the ideology of a nation in the 1930s and 1940s? The French rebelled causing the French Revolution and removed King Louis' head. Do we ban the French flag? Maybe ban the Japanese flag for WWII actions or the Chinese flag for past and modern-day actions we do not like. See how fast they pull their money out of the country. Let's ban the Canadian flag for the way we have treated the first Canadians of this country, or the United States for Vietnam and more, or all of the Christian/Papal flags, remember the Crusades. Every country in the world has a past they would like to forget but still fly their patriotic flags. Mine proudly is the Union

Jack - I am Canadian by birth but with British heritage. History is history - it cannot be changed. It is part of each country's heritage and we should learn from past mistakes and carry on, learning from the past to each be better in the future. Each of us is a rebel at heart and sometimes in our life stand up for a cause we believe in as did those who formed the Confederate States of America 150 years ago. It's not eh flag (although probably easier to attack) that I hateful and intolerant, but people with a different ideology that is long rooted throughout thousands of years of history and removing a flag will change nothing except to dishonour those who died under it.

SMITHS FALLS ARTIST FINDS STROKE RECOVERY HELPFUL WITH PAINTBRUSH LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Joyce Vallee is a selftaught artist who lives in Smiths Falls. She enjoys dabbling with crafty things - miniatures and the like, but her latest passion is watercolour painting. Her paintings have garnered a lot of attention recently with hundreds of likes and shares on Facebook. Vallee paints photos most of the time, her latest creations coming from a Smiths Falls Facebook group taken by Vince Hamilton, and creates beautiful replicas in

watercolour. She draws with pencil first, then she adds an ink to get the intricate details. Once the picture is to her liking, she picks up the paintbrush and adds the colour. "I like painting," she says, as she struggles to find the right words. They don't come out of her mouth, but they do come from a pen to paper quite easily. She grabs the reporter notebook to jot down her thoughts. "I like the historical buildings; the old ones have such character," she said. Many of her paintings are of heritage buildings

around town, captured perfectly on six-by-eightinch watercolour paper. She also enjoys painting animals - dogs especially, as her little chihuahua, Taco Belle, sits protectively under her chair. Vallee paints with acrylic as well, and has some experience with oils. "I learned on my own," she said, as she has no formal teaching. Two years after suffering from a stroke, her gait is a bit slower than it used to be, but she uses painting to help her with the hand-eye coordination. You would not know

she suffered any ailment. Last year, she went through a bout of radiation for lung cancer. Vallee moved here from Vancouver Island to be close to her family. Born and raised in the North Gower area, she lived out west for about 20 years before coming back to Smiths Falls. Her husband, who suffers with Alzheimer's disease, lives at Broadview in town. She said she will do commission work, but would love to see her paintings in a calendar for the town, as suggested on one of the Facebook posts. Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray. Haskins, as a member of that team, was inducted into the Smiths Falls Recreation Hall of Fame on June 24, 2012. According to his obituary on the Blair & Son website, "Ron volunteered countless hours coaching minor hockey over the years and was a former trainer with the Smiths Falls Bears. He loved music, model trains and collecting sports memorabilia and photos for his rec room." Haskins is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Pat, brother Craig, children Mark and Michael, as well as grandchildren Rhyannon and Finn.

Mother had more than one way to fight the common housefly, which she hated with a passion. She was convinced before coming into the house, they had collected enough germs from the barns to send us all to our sick beds. So when they managed to get into the kitchen, they were short-lived, let me tell you! Her favourite procedure to kill them off was the spray can of Fly-Tox which she got from Scott's Hardware in Renfrew. When she used this powerful spray

method, the kitchen was closed up for the better part of the day, as Mother attached the invaders with such force, that for hours after, you could smell the strong Fly-Tox all the way to the ice house, and the fumes hung from the ceiling like gossamer clouds. Father said it was more deadly than the housefly, even those that came first from the barns. She absolutely refused to use those hanging sticky coils that attached to the ceiling, since, after letting Father talk her into them, a fly fell off and landed in the butter dish, which, of course, had to be thrown out - butter and all! Just about every farmhouse in Northcote used the hanging coils. Even those farm wives who were immaculately clean, which Mother could never understand. If we were invited to tea and cookies on a summer day to a house where the coils were used, Mother never took her eyes off

them, waiting for a fly to fall onto the kitchen table, which would immediately cause her to say we had to rush off to do some urgent chore at home. She even had Father make homemade swatters for we five kids. Square pieces of fine wire mesh were tacked to a thin strip of lath, and we each had our own, with orders to keep it close at hand, so that we could swat any fly that came within a foot of us. Of course, we were never allowed to kill a fly that was anywhere near the kitchen table! We had to shoo it away, and, hopefully, it would land on the back of a chair or a windowsill where its splattered body was well away from where we would be eating. Then we had to take wet rag and scour the spot afterwards. On hot days, it wasn't unusual for us to have our noon meal out in the grape arbour, where a long table,

ergy would be better spent fighting a war she could win. He said, as long as he lived on the farm (born there, he would remind her), nobody ever won the war over the summer invasion of the flies. Cassell, who has owned the CCHL franchise for 12 years, has sold both teams to brothers Nicholas and Joshua Filoso. "Selling the Smiths Falls Bears and the Westport Rideaus was a difficult decision," Cassell said in a press release through his representatives, Howard Kelford & DuBois LLP. "It is with some sadness, but also a sense of pride that I say goodbye as owner ..." Cassell said the decision was made easier knowing the teams are in good hands. "I want to thank the coaches, trainers, scouts, volunteers and the communities of Smiths Falls and West-

port for all the support they've given me and their hometown teams over the past 12 years, and I wish both teams great success." The Filoso brothers say they are looking forward to continuing the rich history of the teams which have had some strong support in their communities. "We are really excited to be involved with the (teams), they said. "We look forward to continuing the strong relationships with the people in both communities who support these teams, including volunteers, sponsors, billet families and fans." TWO DEAD FOLLOWING TRAGIC OCCURRENCES NEAR PORTLAND LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Two lives were lost over the August long weekend as a result of tragic incidents near Portland. Jordan Yuill died suddenly on Monday, Aug. 6 just shy of his 35th birthday, and Monica Chant, 29, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, as a result of a car accident. Ontario Provincial Police Det. Staff Sgt. Brad Collins spoke with the Record News on Tuesday, Aug. 14, to say the investigation is ongoing. He is the major case manager with Criminal Investigation Bureau. “We really don’t know very much at this point as to the cause of death on Yuill,” he said. “I think with Chant, it’s fairly obvious that there was some blunt trauma to the body in the traffic accident.” The two occurrences were not related, Collins said, but the parties did know each other. “The Yuill death is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Branch,” Collins

Jordan Yuill said. “We’re still waiting for toxicology analysis from his blood to find out what substances were in his system. That’s going to be important for us to find out and hopefully help us to establish a cause of death.” OPP issued a missing person alert, saying Yuill was last seen on Aug. 4 on Cedar Valley Road near Portland, wearing baggy jeans, no shirt and no shoes. A subsequent OPP release stated he had been found Monday, Aug. 6 with the help of an OPP Canine Unit, along with the Emergency Response Team and a helicopter; however the press re-

lease did not state if he was alive. Collins said it was “very obvious” that Yuill was found deceased at the scene and can’t speculate as to why it wasn’t stated in the press release that followed. Collins said that when there are multiple deaths in a small area like Portland, it’s going to garner a lot of public speculation. “This is the reason why Criminal Investigation Bureau is overseeing the investigation at this point,” Collins said, adding that it is not a murder investigation. “We want to make sure we have everything covered off and to ensure the public that we are doing everything that we can to unpack the circumstances of the death,” he said. Collins confirmed that police are still actively searching the scene where Yuill’s body was found. Lannin Funeral Home of Smiths Falls posted Yuill’s death notice on Aug. 11. He was the son of Glen and Jan Yuill; brother of Shannon, Kristi and Kerri; uncle of Kody and Teagan. He was the grandson of Walter and Doris Lyon and William and Anita Yuill, and nephew of Steve Lyon and Rob Marshall. Yuill was the cherished friend of Chantel and fondly remembered by Matt, Darren, Tyler, Eric, Melissa and Breanna. A celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95, Smiths Falls on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, 1 p.m.

Chant succumbs to injuries after collision Monica Chant died as a result of a car accident during the early morning hours of Aug. 7. OPP said in a press release that Chant, 29 of Smiths Falls, died from injuries sustained in the two-vehicle collision on Highway 15 near Portland. The other driver, a 58year-old Monica Chant Kingston man, was taken to hospital in Kingston with non-life threatening injuries. Highway 15 between County Road 5 and Cedar Valley Road was closed for several hours while members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit conducted their examination. Chant was the daughter of Teresa Edwards and the late David Chant. She was the sister of Amelia Chant (Romano); granddaughter of Margaret and the late Stuart Chant; Carole and the late Robert Edwards; niece of Barb (Stephen) DeLisle, Vicki (Mike) Ogilvie, Linda Greenley (Doug Gilfillen), the late Les Chant, Susan Latimer and Richard (Beth) Chant. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 13 at Lannin Funeral Home

FORMER BEARS' HEAD COACH, MARK GRADY, PILOTS JUNIOR TEAM AT WORLD CUP IN SOCHI LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Smiths Falls Bears will be represented at the upcoming Junior Club Sirius World Cup, Aug. 18 to 27 in Sochi, Russia. Together with Central Canada Hockey League and Hockey Canada the 22-man roster will include head coach Mark Grady, former head coach of the Bears, and forward Alex DiCarlo. The team will consist of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards, and it will have CCHL representation from 10 of its 12 member clubs. In the middle of this adventure there was the sale of the Smiths Falls Bears, where Grady was head coach for 12 years. Grady helped orchestrate the sale of the team - including the Westport Rideaus - to Joshua and Nicholas Fisolo of Ottawa, with the team owner Chris Cassell, who is also his boss at Glenview Iron and Metals in Smiths Falls. Grady may be finished as the head coach of the Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears, after the team was sold last week, but he's got one more important assignment before contemplating his next moves. Marilyn passed away peacefully in the Perth hospital on Friday, August 10th, 2018 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her parents Mae Florence (Buckingham) and Clarke Moore Killam and her loving husband of 53 years David Alfred Bradford. Marilyn was the loved mother of Dawn Elizabeth (Bill) King of Lanark, and David Clarke (Claire) of London, Ontario. She was the loving Nana of Sarah Dawn and William David. She will be sadly missed by her brother William (Corrine) Killam of Florida, nephews Peter and Stephen of Florida, all her family and friends. Marilyn was living in Perth after spending many years in Ottawa and Brighton. Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and many good friends. Clem alongside his beloved Beverly owned the Hobby Shop & Variety Centre for over 40 years. He was a quiet and kind gentleman holding the highest integrity in business and in family life. He loved going to the racetrack in the early years and really enjoyed it with the modern facility combined with a good meal and the slots at the casino. He liked watching a good hockey game, catching Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights and loved following Brittany and Brooke’s journey on the LPGA. Clem was above all passionate and proud of all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alexander, Charles Maxwell, AFC, CD, BA Commercial Bank of Scotland 1949 to 1953, RAF 1953 to 1956, BA Carleton University 1977, RCAF/CF 1956 to 1976 May 5th, 1931 in Denny, Scotland to August 7th, 2018 in Perth, Ontario. Charles was predeceased by his father William and his mother Elizabeth Somers (Maxwell) Alexander both of Scotland and his first wife Barbara (Parliament) Alexander Schaldemose. He is survived by his second wife Frances (Arbuthnot) Alexander of Perth, Ontario and his sons Geoffrey of Delta, B.C. and David of Trenton, Ontario and a daughter Katherine of Richmond, Ontario. Charles is also survived by his grandsons, Shawn Michael, Jason Sean, Ryan Mathew and Jonathan Blair. As Charles wished there will be no visitation or memorial service. His cremated remains will be scattered off the coast of Kintyre in Argyll, Scotland. Charles started off his military career with five years service in the RAF which included national service and eventually received his training as a long range navigator in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1953. In 1956, he enrolled in the RCAF as an airborne interceptor navigator with service that included 433 Sqn in North Bay, 408 Sqn in Rockcliffe, 425 Sqn in Bagotville and 414 Sqn in Ottawa. Alan Ashby, age 88, died in the early hours of August 5, 2018, at the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital in Smiths Falls. Alan is survived by his wife of 66 years, Olive Ashby, of Merrickville; his son, Graham (Janet Anderson), of Merrickville; his daughter, Zoë (David Hoffman), of Smiths Falls; and his son Vernon, of Russell. He is preceded in death by his father, Oliver Ashby, of Ramsgate, Kent England; his mother, Grace Clackett, also of Ramsgate; and his sister, Phyllis Allum, of Richmond , Ontario. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Skye, Robin, Adam, Nathan, and Charlotte and his great grandson Caio. Also greatly missed by his step-sister Margaret, and nieces and nephews in England and Canada. Born in Ramsgate Kent, England, Alan brought his family to Canada in 1967 seeking greater opportunities and to have a new beginning for his family. Alan was an unassuming man who was a man of love. He had a great love for his wife, his family, and for listening to jazz music. Alan was a jazz drummer as a young man and was also a gifted artist, creating pastels of places and things that held a special meaning to him. He enjoyed watching the Senators play while he enjoyed a good beer and cuddling up to Suzie the family cat. His family and friends will always remember him as a kind and generous person with a great sense of humour (were they fork handles or four candles Dad?). Alan’s family take this opportunity to thank the kind caring staff at the hospital. DONNA SEARLE 1934 - 2018

With the passing of Donna Lorraine Searle (nee Patterson) in her 85th year, we pause to celebrate a life well lived. Donna enjoyed several successful careers as an educator, a farmer and an office administrator. Donna, the only child of Dr. Walter Henry Patterson and Evelyn Carr Patterson of Holland, Manitoba, was born on August 17, 1934. After earning a B.A. at the University of Winnipeg, Donna enthusiastically pursued a career in Christian Education with the United Church of Canada in a variety of communities in Manitoba and Ontario. Her next calling was farming near Clayton, Ontario. Donna and Stan were married under the apple tree at their farm in August of 1971 and forged a successful partnership which introduced Charolais beef cattle to eastern Ontario. Not only was Donna adept at showing prize winning cattle in the ring but also kept busy showing her best in class Boston Terriers at major competitions in Ontario and the United States. When Donna retired from farming, she began a career in office administration. Her dedication and organizational excellence provided a valuable contribution to the work of Almonte cabinetmaker John Brathwaite and area lawyers, Mike Ross, Allan Jones and Brooke McNabb. Donna lived a long and happy life thanks to the support of her wonderful husband Stan and her family, friends and neighbours. In recent years, she treasured the caring professionalism of a wonderful human being, Dr. Roger Drake, and the loving care of the staff at Stoneridge Manor nursing home in Carleton Place, Ontario. A private family celebration will be held.

Surrounded by friends and family, Patricia Anne Jeeves passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2018, after a long courageous journey with Cancer. Born in Scarborough on January 18, 1946, Pat was the eldest daughter of Bill and Elsie Jeeves. Pat is survived by her younger brother Gord Jeeves and his wife Beverly, along with Heather and John Scott. Aunty Pat will never be forgotten by her nephews/nieces Gregory, William, Robyn, Shauna, Lyndsey and Andrew, and grand-nephews Grayson and Aiden. After leaving David & Mary Thompson High School in Scarborough, Pat attended Teachers College. She then attended Carleton University in Ottawa and received her Master’s in Social Work and settled In Carleton Place. Pat worked for Amethyst House, Ottawa Mental Health and Lanark Mental Health. When Pat retired, she went to work at Lanark Interval House where her passion and sensitivity to Women’s Issues helped to develop and create a new Building addition to the shelter for women and children. Pat’s dedication to the many Committees and Boards made her a much loved member of the Community. We, her family and friends, have fond memories of Pat for her love of her cats, gardens, teapots, gourmet cooking and baking, photography, collecting, shopping and travelling. Each of us have post cards, stories and treasures from Pat’s trips to China, Portugal, Africa, England, Sweden, Cuba and so many more places. Pat was loyal and committed to her friends. Her brother Gord and family would like to extend a sincere thanks to “Team Pat” (Heather, Judy D. Joan, Judy JC, Maureen) and the “Cat Whisper” Miaretta for their loving care with and for Pat during her journey these past five years. Of White Rock, BC (formerly of Perth, Ontario) died peacefully under palliative care at her residence in the Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care facility on July 17, 2018 at the age of 99 with her daughter Linda at her side. Born in 1919 in Perth, Ontario to Alexander and Blanche ( Thornton) Drysdale, Marion grew up on the family farm in North Elmsley township. She attended the one room school house at the end of the family farm and then went to High School in Perth. Married on December 18, 1941 to Hubert Armstrong of Prince George, BC, she lived on Drummond Street in Perth until 1965 when her family moved to Prince George then to the Greater Vancouver area. Predeceased by her husband, her brothers Elmer and Arthur Drysdale, her sister Joyce Syniuta of Boston and her eldest son Bruce Armstrong, Marion is survived by her sons Ron ( Marilyn Hunley) of Ottawa and Brian (Judy Cordick) of Perth, and her daughter Linda (Gary) Patterson of Surrey, BC. Marion is also survived by her eldest son’s widow, Gisele Armstrong of Windsor ON, her grandchildren Angie (Eric) Dupre of Windsor and Brooke and Nicole Patterson of Vancouver, BC and by her great grandchildren Ryan Dupre of Bedford NS and Kathleen and Alexandre Dupre of Windsor. Marion was a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed having a good laugh. She was a loving, kind and generous mother and will be missed by her family and friends.

Born in Liverpool England on April 20th, 1926, educated at Shrewsbury School in England and graduated from Cambridge University. Moved to Canada in the 1950’s, worked as an Electrical engineer, Professor at University of Ottawa (1966-1976) and then left to start the engineering firm, ThompsonFoss. They moved to Perth in 1990. Philip and Susan enjoyed Scottish Country Dancing for many years. He was an active participant and volunteer with the Canadian Ski Marathon, Nakkertok Ski Club and Tay Valley Ski Club. He enjoyed cross country, downhill and Telemark skiing into his late 80’s. He sailed and raced Albacores at the Gatineau River Yacht Club and on Calabogie Lake. Also as a young man, he was an avid pilot. Many people would recognize him walking with purpose around Perth wearing his backpack and straw hat. There was a family only green burial held in Cobourg, ON. In remembrance of Philip, memorial donations to the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Perth and District Union Public Library would be appreciated. Grady came into the Team Canada fold a little later, replacing Carleton Place Canadians head coach Jason Clarke, who had to decline the offer to coach. "It took them three or four days to convince me that this was going to be a good opportunity," Grady said. There's a lot of work that goes into a trip like this, he said, "and you really appreciate Hockey Canada. When I've been on my other trips, all within Canada, what they do for you - you can't just go to Russia. Every player has to have an invitation letter, every player has to apply for a visa, then there is family, flights, medicals - there's a lot that goes into it, not to mention equipment and the logistics of shipping equipment." Grady said it's a trip that would cost the players a lot of money, "but it's significantly less with the sponsorship of the AHL, the Russian Hockey Association who is looking after our flights, hotel rooms." The Canadian juniors will have an excursion to the Red Square and to the Kremlin while in Russia. They will fly out of Moscow on Aug. 16 to Sochi and will practice on Aug. 17 to prepare for Saturday night's opening game against the Russians on

Aug. 18. "Regardless how we do, it's all about competing, especially early on, considering the amount of travelling we've had to endure," he said. "I'm hoping their bodies will have settled down by that game and we're ready to go." For DiCarlo, a 19-year-old forward, he said in a previous interview that he was looking forward to the tournament. "I'm really excited and honoured to be chosen for the team. I hope to represent the CCHL to the best of my abilities, and to help the team win." DiCarlo said he knew making the grade wouldn't be easy. "There are a lot of great players in this league so I knew coming in it wouldn't be easy, and I would have to work for a spot," he said. "My coaches in Smiths Falls show a ton of confidence in me, which really helps me to build on my game." DiCarlo said his mother, Stacey, and brother, Michael, will be heading to Russia with him. "They're really excited as well. I'm very grateful for the opportunity and excited for the whole experience," DiCarlo said. Grady was named as Team Canada's head coach twice in his hockey career. He turned it down his last year as he took an assignment in the OHL. He was assistant coach twice for Team Canada, but because of the quality of this tournament and the travelling, and logistics, Grady said this one is "pretty up there" as a highlight of his coaching career. Grady said he's been offered a few jobs elsewhere on the ice, but he's not quite sure where he'll land once he returns from Sochi. "I didn't turn them down, but I wanted to get this tournament finished first," he said. "There are people who want to talk to me when I get back."
