The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has reported elevated levels of bacteria at Junior Beach - the beach area at Murphy Park, according to a Town of Smiths Falls notice issued on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The health unit's weekly beach reports say the water is not recommended for swimming because the latest bacterial tests of the water indicated unacceptable levels of bacteria. The town says that because of the elevated bacteria levels, the beach area is closed. However, they say the main swimming area remains open. The town says this closure will be in effect until at least Monday, when the water will be retested. Signage is in place.

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Sometimes in life, you need help. A new program being offered in Smiths Falls, Bridges out of Poverty, helps participants assess their lives and give them the agency, confidence and a plan to move beyond their current circumstance. And while the program is new in town, it's not new to the world. "Bridges out of Poverty is a movement, a movement that calls on the entire community to help build bridges out of poverty for local families," said co-facilitator of the program, Kelley Denham. "It's in six countries now. In Canada, it's big in Sarnia and Lambton area." The Adult Learning & Training Centre, along with Lanark County Mental Health, Ontrac, Lanark, Leeds and Grenville
Health Unit, Rideau Community Health Services and Health Link Rideau Tay, brought the Bridges out of Poverty initiative to Smiths Falls for the first time this spring. The group, made up of seven people, including two youth, a senior, somebody in housing who was a mother of three young kids and three people on Ontario Disability Support Program, participated in the inaugural run of the program. All seven participants graduated in June. The group met once a week for 12 weeks. The program is based on the work of Ruby Payne, American educator and author known for her work on the culture of poverty, including the invisible rules of the social classes. "It's really cool stuff," said Denham, who has real-world experience dealing with poverty, she realized the effectiveness this program could have on others. "It made a lot of sense to me having
Kelley Denham been poor, and then not poor, and then poor again, and then not poor. "I know how hard it is because you're living day-by-day, you're just surviving," she said. "You're not going to think about tomorrow if you don't know what you're going to eat today. It's impossible." Before the Bridges out of Poverty program, Denham had been trying to help people on a one-onone basis. But after seeing a Bridges out of Poverty workshop, put on by Gayle Montgomery, while
just it." The aim of the workshop is to help individuals identify which of their resources are low and work toward building them with whichever resources they have that are high. HOW TO PARTICIPATE In order to get as many people through the door, the Bridges out of Poverty program takes care of everything for their participants - including child care and lunch. Along with donations from involved agencies, the Bridges out of Poverty program has received donations from Andress' Independent Grocer and Apple House Art Gallery. Apple House Art Gallery founder, Patricia Mosher, has also volunteered her time to provide the child-care and has developed an artistically-focused curriculum. The Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute's hospitality class has provided lunch, while Glad Tidings church in Perth is providing snacks which is likely breakfast for many participants. The second round of Bridges out of Poverty will start this September. If you would like to participate reach out to Kelley Denham at kelley.denham@altclanark.com. attending Algonquin College she knew there could be potential to bring the program to town. "She's explaining how to get out of poverty and I'm like: 'That's exactly what I did. This is the road map. This is how you do it.'" Last August, a working group formed in town and the program was born. Participants work on creating their "future stories" as well as thinking critically about what poverty means, how to break the cycle of poverty to create life choices, and what nuances exist when thinking about class structures. "This model defines poverty as the extent someone does without resources," explained Denham. Poverty isn't solely defined by income; the reasons that keep people in a cycle of poverty is complex. "Most organizations either say it's individual choices that keep people in poverty and others say it's systemic barriers that keep people in poverty," said Denham. "The reality is it's a mix and in order to address poverty we need to address it at all of these levels. "A lot of people in poverty believe they are faded - nothing will ever get better, there's no other options, I had kids young I'm always going to be poor and that's

OPINION EDITORIAL
BROKEN PROMISES ALL TOO COMMON Don't make promises you can't keep. The classic song by Three Dog Night has a simple message, but unfortunately it's one that politicians all too often ignore. And when you mix in an electorate that demands unrealistic promises, you have a recipe for disappointment and cynicism. The buck-a-beer promise made by Conservative leader Doug Ford during the recent provincial election campaign comes to mind. As does the 10-cent reduction in gas price pledge. As well as the revoking of the sex-ed curriculum. Many beer-drinkers across the province have been excited at the prospect of buck-a-beer since it first became an election issue. But it won't be long before disillusionment sets in. The brewery industry has already realized there is much froth but little substance to the promise. If Ford's gang really wanted to give us a $1 beer, they'd drop taxes on pints, not expect brewers to either provide it at a loss or come up with a new cheap rotgut brand (or smaller cans). How is reducing the minimum companies can charge for beer from $1.25 to $1 going to give us buck-a-beer when the best we get now is a $1.60 beer? Given the rapid rise in the popularity of craft beers, it's not likely there will be much of a market (or stomach) for any beer that costs less than $1 to make. Same goes for cheaper gas. If the provincial government really wants to give us a 10-cent break on gas, drop the taxes. Despite Ford’s promise, gas prices in Ontario are about 20 per cent higher this summer than they were last year under the tax-happy Liberals. Then there's the new government's promise to scrap the school curriculum for health and physical education (or sex-ed to those obsessed with the sex-related material part of it) and replace it with something more “age-appropriate.” But there isn't enough time to properly consult with parents before the new school year begins. So it's unlikely we'll see a full repeal of the sex-ed part of the curriculum, which will infuriate a small but vocal group of Conservative supporters for whom the sex-ed issue is paramount. Let's not get carried away with expectations. It's hardly a matter of our homegrown minister snapping his fingers and it will be done. The new government is facing some serious challenges when it comes to bringing the province's finances under control. It's not going to be as easy as our premier seems to think to find all the savings he has promised.
Despite Ford’s promise, gas prices in Ontario are about 20 per cent higher this summer than they were last year under the tax-happy Liberals.

WHO WE ARE
HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR CANADA? INTRIGUED BY A MYSTERY LETTER, LAURIE WEIR RE-DISCOVERS SOME HISTORY LAURIE WEIR Column
I received a letter in the mail Aug. 17. I always enjoy receiving letters – be they hate mail, for print, or a thank you card (these are rare gems that are treasured!) but this one was a mystery letter, addressed to ‘Editor Ms? Laurie Weir and Staff’ – yes, the question mark beside the honourific was a cute touch. There was no return address, nor was it signed. One of the stipulations for letters to the editor, if they are to appear in print, is that they need to be signed. There also needs to be a phone number so that we can call the writer and verify it. There were some stickers – stars on the front of the envelope, a singing bird on the back, along with a shiny ‘Canada’ sticker, under which the writer had penned in red ink and un-
derlined, ‘THE MAGNIFICENT LAND.’ Intrigued, I opened it, found a letter and a card. It was a note card, pink with swirls, and inside was written: “Kindness is like a boomerang, it always returns. Enjoy your day, from a glad and grateful Canadian.” I opened the orange piece of paper and found the hand-written note, entitled, “Do you know your country, CANADA? There were some triviatype questions that I read aloud, and not many were answered by myself or the newsroom staff in the office today. So I ask you dear reader, how well do you know your Canada? 1. Where is the Norman Bethune Memorial House? 2. Name five fathers of Confederation. 3. What is The Queen’s Plate? 4. Where is the Bush Pilots Memorial? 5. Name the Chief of the Blackfoot who signed Treaty 7.
6. Who were The Riders of the Plains? 7. Name Canada’s highest mountain, and for whom it was named. 8. What and where is Rideau Hall? 9. Name five islands in our Artic Archipelago. 10. What and where is The Golden Boy? 11. Who was E. Pauline Johnson? 12. Who designed the outstanding Vimy Memorial? 13. Who was Sir Samuel Cunard? 14. What and where is the Tower of God? 15. Name 10 Canadian Rivers. 16. Where are Peace, Spirit, and High rivers? To find the answers, I resorted to Google, and my entire column can be found with the answers on our website: www.insideottawavalley.com. COUNCIL
STAFF PROPOSE 2 BRIDGES TO COMPLETE PEDESTRIAN LINK EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com A bridge too far? Two bridges have been proposed to create a pedestrian link across the Rideau River from Abbott Street to the park on the north side of the Rideau River. The proposed bridges, presented to council on Monday, Aug. 13, by Art Manhire, the town's director of community services, would link Duck Island to the spillway and the spillway to the water treatment plant. The first structure on the north side of the river, crossing to Turtle Island was installed in 2015, connecting pedestrians to Turtle Island. In 2016, a second structure was designed and installed from Duck Island over the spillway in the river. Manhire reported that after the structure was installed there were changes made to the way water levels and controls take place

and, thus, the town saw a "dramatic increase" in flow rates coming down the river during the spring thaw in 2017. The high water event in the spring of 2017 caused the bridge to be submerged by surging waters at their peak. Manhire said that, while the south structure didn't sustain any damage, staff were concerned about the long-term viability of the bridge. So, in consultation with engineers and the manufacturer of the bridge, the decision was made to remove the structure in the late fall of 2017 to avoid potential risks this past spring. When the bridge was removed, the manufacturer, Links Bridges, and the town began to look for other options to span the river that would be high enough to keep the structure out of the water, even during high water events, such as the flooding that occurred in the spring of 2017. Manhire said many considerations led to the brid-

To accomplish this, he said, a span of approximately 49 metres is needed. The report delivered to council represents what town staff feel is "the lowest cost and easiest solution to keep a year-round structure that sits above the

high-water mark." Manhire said bridging the span presents a "significant challenge." The project's total cost is estimated at $223,757. However, Manhire reported that the same company who built the previous bridge would reuse the salvageable parts of the old bridge to use in the new construction. The compa-
ny, Links Bridges, would be offering a credit for the new bridge, which will further reduce the project cost. With the proposed bridges, pedestrians will still be able to access Turtle Island using the south bridge. Coun. Joe Gallipeau questioned why water level considerations weren't considered with the previ-
ous structure, and also questioned whether or not the company who constructed the previous structure, which he called a "total disaster" should be trusted to construct the new one. "This needs to go out to tender," he said, explaining that the bidding process needs to be competitive. Gallipeau questioned whether the town really was getting a good deal. Manhire explained that the water levels had changed since the bridge was installed. Other councillors echoed Gallipeau's request to have the bridge construction go out to a competitive bidding process. Manhire, though stated that the town had already had been through a process to find the company who constructed the previous bridge was competitive, agreed to begin the request for proposal process for the newly proSee LINKING, page 14

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY INSTALLED IN SMITHS FALLS' VICTORIA PARK EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com There's a new, tiny library in town. A Little Free Library has popped up in Smiths Falls' Victoria Park after initiative from community members. Little libraries are a global phenomenon with about 70,000 around the world in 85 countries, and, now, the town has its very own where users can take a book, leave a book or exchange books - all for free. "The interest in this has been huge," said Dave Pringle, who helped to bring the Little Free Library to fruition. "I put the word out (asking people to donate books) and kaboom - the garage was full." Pringle says the unique project is good for the town. "Books stimulate your imagination - you've got to think about what you're reading." Pringle just installed the library in Victoria Park on Wednesday, Aug. 15, and it's already getting used. "I love it," said Larry Bradford, who started using the library the day it was installed. The newly installed Little Free Library was handpainted by Heather Griffith of Heather's Studio, which features images of iconic Smiths Falls landmarks including the Station Theatre, the Smiths

Constellation Brands is acquiring the new shares at a price of $48.60 per share, which is a 37.9 percent premium to Canopy's five-day volume weighted average price of the common shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and a 51.2 per cent premium to the closing price on Aug. 14. As a result of the new shares Constellation is acquiring, Canopy Growth will immediately upon closing have proceeds of approximately $5 billion to bolster its leadership position in the global cannabis industry. This investment, the largest to date in the cannabis space, will provide funds which Canopy Growth will deploy to strategically build and/or ac-
quire key assets needed to establish global scale in the nearly 30 countries pursuing a federally permissible medical cannabis program, while also rapidly laying the global foundation needed for new recreational cannabis markets. Canopy Growth's Canadian platform doesn't require additional cannabis cultivation assets, and management views other jurisdictions, including the U.S., as strategic priorities requiring significant capital. "Through this investment, we are selecting Canopy Growth as our exclusive global cannabis partner," said Rob Sands, CEO of Constellation Brands. "Over the past year, we've come to better understand the cannabis market, the tremendous growth opportunity it presents, and Canopy's market- leading capabilities in this space. We
look forward to supporting Canopy as they extend their recognized global leadership position in the medical and recreational cannabis space." Canopy Growth will benefit from Constellation's deep understanding of consumer trends and shifting preferences, and proven ability to translate those insights into distinct brand positionings that build strong connections with consumers and foster brand loyalty. Constellation's disciplined approach and capabilities in areas such as mergers and acquisitions, finance, large-scale production, marketing and sales as a leading Fortune 500 company, combined with Canopy's entrepreneurial approach and bestin-class knowledge and expertise within the emerging cannabis sector create a powerful combination that will ensure Canopy Growth is set up for sus-

tainable, long-term success as the company and sector evolve. Founded in 2013, Canopy Growth has cemented itself as the industry leader in Canada's legal cannabis market. Through its subsidiaries, Tweed and Spectrum Cannabis, Canopy Growth has established a global presence in 11 countries which is driven by product innovation, a robust intellectual property portfolio, and clinical research programs targeting both human and animal health. In Canada, Canopy Growth has established sophisticated operations to support recreational sales by raising capital and making the strategic investments required to maintain and accelerate its market leadership position at a critical time in the company's evolution. Substantial capital is required to fully capitalize on Canopy Growth's market-leading position in Canada and establish similar leading positions in markets around the globe. "Our business can now make the strategic investments required to accelerate our market position globally," said Bruce Linton, Chair and Co-CEO of Canopy Growth. "Constellation's concentration of global cannabis activities exclusively through Canopy, coupled with the investment and its expert capabilities in brand-building, marketing, consumer insights and M&A will be a huge benefit as we look to expand our portfolio in Canada, the U.S. and emerging cannabis markets around the globe. We view this investment in our business as an endorsement of our execution since forming our initial strategic relationship in October 2017." As part of the proposed transaction, Constellation will nominate four directors to Canopy Growth's sevenmember board of directors, chaired Linton, the founder of Canopy Growth. Canopy Growth will remain a proudly Canadian publicly-traded company headquartered in Smiths Falls and will continue to be led by its existing management team, who will continue to manage all international cannabis operations.

posed bridges. Manhire said some estimates came in when the town was first exploring bridge options as high as $1 million. Mayor Shawn Pankow, who said he "liked the concept" of the proposed bridges, pointed out that, after credits provided by Links Bridges, the town would be at a net loss for the old bridge of around $13,000 if they decided to allow the company to build the two new structures. But, he too agreed that the town should shop around to see if Links Bridges are giving the town the best deal. Pankow also questioned the location of the bridges - pointing out potential accessibility issues for people who might be heading to Abbott Street. Coun. Chris Cummings questioned the need for the bridge at all. He also questioned why the money for this pedestrian link could be used for Confederation Bridge. Previously, council had agreed to find out what the future of the old water treatment plant will be before seriously discussing the future of Confederation Bridge. Currently, the town is in negotiations with Bruce Linton, CEO and Chairman of Canopy Growth Corp, who has proposed plans to redevelop the site. Depending on the outcome of those negotiations, and the plans for the development, only then will council discuss the future of Confederation Bridge because then they will have a clear and accurate picture of what the need for the bridge will be moving forward - a pedestrian-only bridge or a bridge that could accommodate vehicles too. Coun. Jay Brennan expressed that he wants both bridges, but that that discussion should wait until the fall when the municipal election kicks into highgear and the new council is elected.

FITNESS TESTING FRIDAY, AUG. 17 LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears and the Westport Rideaus have been sold Ottawa brothers, Joshua and Nicholas Filoso and they will be on the ice this weekend to open camp. The brothers purchased the two teams from Chris Cassell recently, for an undisclosed sum. Cassell said in a statement from his lawyers that he struggled with the decision to sell. "Selling the Smiths Falls Bears and the Westport Rideaus was a difficult decision," Cassell stated. In a followup phone call, Josh Filoso said he's looking forward to coming to Smiths Falls Friday to kick off the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) season with fitness testing.
"We're taking over pretty late in the summer so we don't have a lot of time to get a new roster together," Filoso said. "We're going to keep the same roster as last year and we're going to try and compete as much as we can this year. We hope to be a playoff team, and hopefully once we make the playoffs, we can surprise a couple of people." The roster may be the same, but the bench has been almost cleared. Gone are head coach/ general manager Mark Grady and associate coach Walt Dubas. Grady, in a phone interview, said he facilitated his own future. This week he is coaching Team Canada at the Junior Club Sirius World Cup in Sochi, Russia. "I tried to place all my guys with places to go; the triple A midget team (which is operated by the branch), he's going to put in his own group of guys

They are Tom McLaren, who is now in Kanata; head coach Mark Grady, who is currently coaching Team Canada in Russia, and Walt Dubas, who is now with the Brockville Braves. The only bench staff staying is Rob Dopson, not pictured. there," Grady said. "They have decided they want to put their own people in there, and that's their prerogative. It's real late in the process to do that, but I have no real opinion on it. I made sure I contacted all my staff with all my teams and let them know if they
were staying or going. I felt that was my responsibility." Dubas, who will be heading to the Brockville Braves this year, said he is looking forward to a new job. "I am thankful and appreciative for the opportu-
nity that Chris Cassell and Mark Grady gave me to coach the Bears for the last seven years," Dubas said. "I am excited to work with Dustin Traylen, Jesse Winchester and Devin Payne in Brockville. It is a great opportunity and I cannot wait to get started."
Assistant coach Tom McLaren found new work with the Kanata Lasers prior to this deal. Grady said he felt McLaren needed to get more experience. "I really enjoyed my time with the Bears," McLaren said in an email statement to this newspaper. "Without the opportunity that the organization gave me, I wouldn't be where I am today as a coach. I learned so many things about the game and about the administrative part involved." "They need to get more experience with different coaches," Grady said. "You learn positive and negative with everybody you work with. I've worked with some high-end guys, including the NHL, and you learn things about yourself and what you need to change because of what you learned. You see things from guys - even with guys

DOPSON RETURNS TO SMITHS FALLS BEARS BENCH a hard decision to pass up," he said about their purchase. "Last year (Armstrong) was the associate coach in Hawkesbury," Filoso said of his new head coach. "He's got a big background in coaching. I've known him five-six years now." The Filoso brothers are from Ottawa South (Gloucester), and just last season, Josh Filoso, 21, completed five years of junior hockey. Nicholas Filoso is 23 years old.
"Now that I've finished playing, I didn't really want to step away from (hockey)," Filoso said. "I wasn't ready to step away. I heard of this opportunity and we pounced right on it." The Bears have been struggling over the past few years, and last season, failed to make the playoffs. During the 2016/17 season, they were ousted in the first round. Fan support is huge, but sometimes, the Bears had a hard time getting them into
the area, Filoso agreed. "We have a couple of plans that we're not going to announce just yet, but we're going to get into the community." Community is a big thing for the brothers, and they will continue their outreach. Grady said he is thankful for the community's support - be that from his coaching staff, to the players, sponsors, fans and volunteers. It has been "outstanding" over his tenure. "We're looking forward to this," Filoso said. "It's going to be a great time ... I'm looking forward to the sea-

As for the Westport Rideaus, the brothers will retain the current coaching staff. "They did a hell of a job last year," Filoso said. "So I'm going to keep those guys around." I've coached against. You learn something. I don't think that Tom was doing himself a service by working with Walt and I all the time. “He is really good as an assistant general manager and I think he needs more growth and development as a coach, and he's going to work with another guy I know and I'm happy that they're all placed. They all want to coach." Grady said the new group of owners coming on have been "very respectful of the process - they took in all the information I gave them, and the fact that I was trying to make this a real seamless transition. I owe it to them, the community and the league." The Bears will retain the services of Rob Dopson, who said he is honoured to stay with the club. "With new ownership comes change," Dopson said. "New direction, new culture." Dopson said he's "over the moon" that they asked him to come back to the bench. "I live here, I played here; I have a lot of ties here." Dopson said playing for the Bears was the catalyst to his professional career, which included a stop with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. "I have coached at a number of other places since I retired," he said. "But I always want to come home." Dopson had opportunities to coach elsewhere, but said to do so in Smiths Falls means a lot to him and to his family. "I'm thrilled with the opportunity to be back on the bench in Smiths Falls," he said. "Now it's important to move forward in whatever direction they choose to go and to continue the tradition that the Cassells have had for the last dozen years. There is a lot of pride in ownership. Mark has been a tremendous asset to the team. Walt is a tremendous hockey guy and personal friend of mine and I'm going to miss him." Dopson said he's met
with the new head coach, Alex Armstrong, and from what he's seen and heard, he's impressed so far. "I'm looking forward to working with him, and with Josh," Dopson said. Filoso said their longterm goal for the Bears is to get back over .500 hockey and compete for a championship. "The opportunity was brought up to us, and because it was this organization and the Bears with all the history they have it was

And while she acknowledges there is an increased cost to switching to more eco-friendly materials, especially in the food industry where profit margins are smaller, and costs are a consideration, it doesn't deter her from doing what she can. "I think it's our responsibility to do our part despite the cost," she said.

Rensby said that while the decision to use more environmentally-friendly materials does cost more, it fits with her values to reduce her footprint as much as possible. "We put out a lot of waste as it is, so my objective is to offset that as much as possible," she said. The bakery, as much as possible, uses environmentallyfriendly to-go containers, includ-

The environment sometimes draws the short straw - but the Rideau Environmental Action League is trying to change that. A group of Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) volunteers set out to visit each Smiths Falls store that distributes straws on Wednesday, Aug. 8, to try and convince them to switch from plastic straws to paper straws as a way to reduce their environmental footprint. "This was one little thing we could do," said REAL volunteer and board member, Katie Hoffman, of the volunteers' efforts. The movement was spearheaded by REAL board member, volunteer and town councillor, Lorraine Allen. Each business that was visited were given two packages of paper straws to try and a business card for the supplier that they could use to purchase the straws in bulk. Right now, according to REAL, it costs $180 for 2400 paper straws they sourced. Hoffman said many businesses were already aware of the plastic problem. Recently, the issue of plastic straws and the need for al-
ternatives have been circulating including the decision of the U.K. to ban all single use plastic, including plastic straws, next year. "Everybody is aware, it's very enlightening," she said. However, said Hoffman, some businesses, with corporate offices, expressed that they aren't able to make decisions at the store-level and often the head offices of the national stores will choose to use plastic, including plastic straws, over environmentally friendly options, like paper. The locally owned businesses, she said, are more interested and able to make decisions like switching to paper straws to help reduce their environmental footprint. But one company appeared to be ahead of the curve. C'est Tout Bakery on Beckwith Street has already jumped on the paper straw train. In fact, the store got their first shipment of paper straws before the REAL volunteers paid the bakery a visit. Owner of C'est Tout Bakery in Smiths Falls, Amy Rensby (left) and Coun. These are this week's featured pets at LAWS: Momma1 Hi my name is Momma1 and I am as sweet as I am beautiful and I can't wait to meet my new best friend! I am living with other cats at the shelter since October last year. I think a quiet home with a regular routine where I can quickly get in the swing of things would suit me best. Boots Hi, I am Boots and just two years old. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a kitty. I enjoy a bit of quiet time, but I am no couch potato. Melita Melita is a very friendly threeyear-old cat who was found astray walking the streets with Mikaela, who meanwhile, has been adopted. This lovely black beauty is always ready for playtime but prefers to have her paws on the ground. She likes to sit next to you for much appreciated affection. Melita is good with the other cats in her room and would welcome a loving home to move in to. She is available at LAWS.
Sneakers Hi, I am four-month-old Sneakers and I'll be sent to Perth Pet Valu, with my three siblings, on Friday, Aug. 24 for the adoption weekend. I am a whirlwind of energy and quite entertaining to watch while I race around chirping to myself. I am extremely curious and rambunctious. It would be great to be adopted into a home with at lease one of my siblings or a home with another cat or dog. I grew up in a foster home and my foster mom loves to snuggle with me as she listens to my loud happy purr. Submitted by LAWS

GARRY INTRODUCES HIS SONG - FROM THE GREAT BEYOND LYLE DILLABOUGH WRITES ABOUT MAKING A LATE COUSIN'S DREAM COME TRUE LYLE DILLABOUGH Column
Sometimes there is nothing else one can do but smile. This is a true story about that. It involves my late cousin, Arthur Garry VanDusen, a song he wrote and a prediction he once made. You see Garry (he was always known as Garry to me) was a big truck-driving, back hoe-operating, mechanical type of a guy who could fix anything. A couple of his mottos were: "If we can't find the part then we will just have to make it" or, "A car ain't a car unless there's a piece of barnyard wire hanging from it somewhere." Garry was also a songwriter. Who would have guessed it? This big, kind of loud-mouthed truck driver -- a love song writer? Yep. One evening back in 1984, he shows up with the lyrics to a song he'd titled
Weekend Lovers. It was about a girlfriend he had at the time who he saw on weekends. He wanted me to put music to it, which I did, and it was recorded onto a cassette tape. (Remember them?) Soon he came up with other songs and one of those was a little ditty called Get Out Lout. This was a phrase, or demand, he'd apparently heard directed his way a time or two over the course of his life. Garry really loved Weekend Lovers and Get Out Lout. He used to say, "One day I'm going to introduce my song on the bona fide airways!" The "bona fide airwaves" to him referred to the AM/FM channels where commercial radio stations broadcast. Garry died on Jan. 3, 2004. Before he died, he came by my place with a CD that had Get Out Lout on it. I sent it to my friend at CHIP-FM in Fort Coulonge, Quebec. And shortly after, I heard it played on the air. I smiled with a bit of a tear in my eye when I thought of how this tune (recorded on a "ghetto-blaster") somehow found its way onto mainstream FM radio. However, the best was yet to come. I recorded a version of Weekend Lovers in Almonte in 2002. Garry
didn't like this version, but I included it on my Sounds Along the Line CD in 2002 anyway. Just to rub it in, you might say. I took a "rough introduction" in Garry's voice that he'd taped to introduce an older version of the song and then edited it onto the newer track. On Jan. 3, 2005, the first anniversary of his death, Linda Elliott announced on CHIP-FM at exactly 4:51 p.m. that she was going to "play a song by Lyle Dillabough." (Both Garry's CB radio handle and favourite number was 451) And what came on the air? None other than Garry's voice introducingWeekend Lovers. And sure enough, the song began to play, just like Garry said he would one day do. He introduced his song - in death nonetheless! Which only tells me one thing: that faith is one mighty force. And no matter what else we may endure in our lives there are times when all you can do is sit back, wonder, shake your head, and just smile. Lyle Dillabough is a local musician who writes for the Ottawa Valley newspapers. He can be reached at 613-257-9002 or email: lyleproductions@gmail.com.

MARGUIRITE'S OVERNIGHT VISIT COMES TO A SUDDEN END FATHER FORCED TO DRIVE HER HOME AT MIDNIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Why bad Marguirite would want to come to my house to spend a night was beyond me. She would be leaving electric lights and flush toilet! But her mother had phoned and said the long summer holidays would soon be over, and her young daughter (who nobody liked at the North-
cote School) would very much like to sleep over one night at my house before school started back in September. My sister Audrey wasn't at all pleased. She would have to sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen to give up her bed she shared with me. Mother telling her it would only be for one night did little to stop Audrey's complaining. Marguirite arrived with her mother in their brand new car, and she bounded out with a little leather suitcase, which caused my brother Emerson to wonder if she planned on moving in. The boys had been warned to behave, and supper, to my complete surprise, went
off without a hitch. Marguirite even had seconds. She and I played house with my dolls until it was bedtime, and then we climbed the stairs, Mother making sure the three boys were settled down first. I saw her wag a finger at their doorway. She didn't have to say a word. They knew what that meant. I should have known the night wouldn't pass without Marguirite causing a stir. Mother barely had her foot on the last step going downstairs with the coal oil lamp, when Marguirite said she had to use the privy. The chamber pot under the bed, she said, was out of the question. Of course, I had to go with her. We
passed through the kitchen where Mother and Father were still sitting. Audrey glared at Marguirite from the creton couch. The trip out to the back house was followed by three others, one right after the other. The fourth time down, Marguirite stopped dead right in the middle of the kitchen floor and started bawling her eyes out. "I want to go home," she wailed. Well, there was no way you could call her mother on
the phone at that hour of the night. The ring would waken the entire neighbourhood of Northcote. Father knew what he had to do. He pulled his overalls on over his long underwear, while Marguirite tore upstairs to get her genuine leather suitcase, passing Audrey who was on her way upstairs to reclaim her bed. By the time Father got the old Model T out of the drive shed, Marguirite was already outside on the back stoop. Everyone but Audrey was wide-awake, and Mother said there was no reason we all couldn't have a cup of hot chocolate before going back up to bed. By the time Father got back, the old kitchen clock was just about to strike midnight.
Emerson said we might as well stay up the rest of the night and play euchre. Father never said a word. Looking like a thunder cloud, he headed right into the bedroom off the kitchen. Mother said at breakfast the next morning, he didn't even stop long enough to take his clothes off. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? BARNDOOR'S 'WILLM SHAKSPER' A SURPRISING TREAT AT FULL CIRCLE THEATRE A hundred years ago, H.F. Rubinstein and Clifford Bax's Shakespeare was an adventurous play for its time, daring to imagine William Shakespeare as an actual man, rather than as a legend. Perth's BarnDoor Productions has taken that now-public domain play and reworked it extensively in light of the many items about the life of Shakespeare that have become known since. The result is Willm Shaksper, a two-hour journey through the life and mind of the English language's greatest writer. In five "episodes," the play goes from Shakespeare's first attempts to gain fame in London through his middle years until just before his death in 1616. Its eight cast members
play nearly 20 roles, most of them historic characters; the one or two that aren't may be found in Shakespeare's plays, if you look hard enough. First nighters offered comments like: "An amazing production," "This play is a marvel" and, "Simply wonderful." In particular, the play's language caught the audience. "When you think of Shakespeare, you think of complex language. Here it is, but it's just everyday conversation." Rubinstein and Bax created characters that spoke in Shakespeare's language. BarnDoor Productions' new version extends that into characters who lapse into poetry when needed and back again - all of it perfectly understandable and all moving the play along at a rapid pace. The set for the show is
deceptively simply, starting with the players entering and turning the pile of furniture on the stage into the setting for the first scene. Just when the audience get used to the idea of the play's skeletal pillars and panelled backdrop showing Elizabethan London, it suddenly is transformed into the enclosed stage of the Globe and then again opened up to show the green fields of rural Stratford. Each scene change takes about five seconds. The costumes, by Leslie Henderson Armstrong, with additional pieces by Marilyn Bird and Sarah Cochrane, are a treat for the eyes. The characters, particularly The Dark Lady and W.H., sparkle and shine. The Elizabethan ruffs and collars instantly place the show in its time.

It's the energy and commitment of the cast that make the play work, however. Each cast member has their own moment (or moments) to shine. Ian Jenner gets to play both Ned Alleyne and Richard Burbage, the two greatest actors of their time: the pompous Alleyne is balanced by the sincere Burbage. Tyler Street provides fun in Act One as Poor Tom, a beggar, and The Stage-keeper of the Globe Theatre, before reappearing in Act Two as The Poet, a young man who may take Shakespeare's place, now that Will is old and feeble. Brian Atterbury is Will Kemp, the most famous clown of Shakespeare's day, so dedicated to his clowning that he wears his motley costume day and night. He also provides some musical interludes at the end of scenes with a charming baritone. As Shakespeare's attorney in Act Two, it's he who draws up Will's will, including the famous item of "my secondbest bed" left to his wife. Slade Stoodley gets to romp through the play as a pair of playwrights and a lord: he is Christopher Marlowe in the first scene (author of Doctor Faustus,
among others); W.H., the "fair youth" of Shakespeare's sonnets, in scenes two and three; then Ben Jonson, the only real rival to Shakespeare as a playwright, in scene four. Ursula Rice-Leech starts off as Joan Henslowe, the object of Will's transparent attempts to gain favour from her producer father; then she becomes he being she, as actor Dick Robinson, playing The Queen in Hamlet. Then in Act Two, she is Judith Shakespeare, Will's daughter, who comes to rescue him. Grace Poltrack is The Dark Lady, a mysterious figure from Shakespeare's sonnets who may have been any of several women. Here, she is Bess, a lady-inwaiting to Queen Elizabeth and she leads Young Will on a heartbreaking ride, before leaving him for good. In a nice twist, Bess pretends to be Shakespeare's Stratford wife, Anne Hathaway, at one point in Act One, and in Act Two, Poltrack returns as Anne, who is every bit the harridan that was predicted in Act One. That leaves a pair of Wills. Garrett Pipher is Young Will in Act One, go-
ing from a brash young man willing to do almost anything to become recognized to a disillusioned, angry man. David Bird is Older Will in Act Two, a man who finds his talent leaving him, his life grown desperate and finally, his health gone. Bird's 50-year-old Shakespeare is physically almost identical to the portraits we know so well, a costuming and makeup achievement, but it is the performance that makes the role. Willm Shaksper is something very different from what you will see elsewhere this summer. It is fast, bright, funny, colourful, dramatic, musical, full of delightful characters and wonderful language and a set of performances that bring William Shakespeare to very vibrant life. Willm Shaksper runs Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the air-conditioned, ground-level, barrier-free Full Circle Theatre, 26 Craig St., Perth. Tickets are just $20 reserved. To reserve, call 613-267-1884 or visit www.barndoorproductions.ca. No credit card required; cash at the performance is requested. Submitted by BarnDoor Productions

MURIEL OLIVE YOST (nee White) Aug. 9, 1927 - Aug. 10th, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Muriel Olive Yost, beloved wife and best friend of the late Nickolas Yost. Predeceased by her parents Russell M. White and Myrtle E. (nee Benedict) and by her brother Milford B. White. She is sadly missed by her twin sister Marian Mingham and sisters Hazel Harry, Evelyn White and brother William White. She will also be missed by her many nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces. She will also be missed by her very dear community of friends in Carleton Place, where she had lived in her home for nearly a half century. She had also lived briefly in Toronto and Ottawa. Muriel was born in Port Hope and grew up on a farm west of Elizabethville in Hope Township. Following graduation from Port Hope High School, she became an occupational therapist. She served with the Red Cross in Japan during the Korean War (1950 - 1953) under the direction of the Canadian Army. She was recognized for her service in this capacity. Muriel was a lifelong and active member of the Canadian Legion and participated in the activities of the Carleton Place Legion Branch and where she had many friends. Soon after returning from Japan, wanderlust struck and she travelled to England to live for a while. Her twin sister Marian came to visit her in England and then stayed to live there permanently, while Muriel returned home to Canada. Muriel was an artisan who specialized in stained glass, painting, crafts and was passionate about gardening. The intricate stained glass works that Muriel and Nick built into their home made it beautiful and special. Muriel very much enjoyed Tai Chi and going to the local gym. She was a philanthropist and over the years has faithfully supported many causes, charities and organizations which supported her beliefs. She loved the theatre and was a supporter at both the local level and at the National level in Ottawa. The twin sisters Muriel and Marian were re-united in Carleton Place for their 91st Birthday on August 9th, 2018. The following day, Muriel passed on. According to her wishes, Muriel has been cremated and there is no visitation or service. Muriel valued her privacy and truly believed in her own distinct philosophy of life.

McMULLEN, Loretta August 13, 1999 God saw you were getting tired, And a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you, And whispered “Come to Me”. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Always remembered Elmer and girls

DECLINE OF RAIL SERVICE HAS BEEN DIFFICULT, WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE. JEFF MAGUIRE Column
In Carleton Place, where we live, there are a few remaining tributes to the town's once proud railway history. One wall of the former Edward's Grocery store at the corner of Franktown Road and Coleman Street features a large mural depicting "the last train to Carleton Place." Town Council here was wise enough to purchase the local railway station which was once such a hub of activity in the community. Our station escaped the fate of so many others across Canada which have long since been demolished. Nearby another large stone structure is now home to the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers which, among other things, is a clearing house for the vast majority of wool produced in Canada. Previously the expansive building was a railway roundhouse and repair centre. The Wool Growers' owners have been good enough to incorporate what amounts to a small railway museum featuring photos, advertisements and railway paraphernalia from the past. Sadly there are no lon-
ger any railway tracks in Carleton Place. Soon after they closed both local rail lines had the tracks removed. The corridors have since been turned over for use as public trails. I have always been a huge fan of trains. I've travelled extensively on them in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Continental Europe. So for me the decline of passenger rail service in this country has been difficult to witness. Trains are such a fast, cost-efficient way to travel and much of our region is crying out for light rail commuter service. With no tracks and the right of ways turned over for other uses the likelihood of that happening is virtually zero! Last week my faith in train travel was renewed when my son Craig and I took a baseball trip to Toronto. We travelled to and from Canada's largest city using Fallowfield Station in Ottawa, near our son's Barrhaven home. On the way to Toronto the VIA train arrived exactly on time! Three days later we were 20 minutes late travelling home but we couldn't have cared less. The train was comfortable (far more comfortable than an aircraft for example) and the amenities and services were excellent. The problem is how limited passenger rail service is in Ontario and across the country. Our nearest station is in Smiths Falls, a 20 minute drive south. VIA Rail claims to serve more than 450 communities
across Canada. But a quick check tells me there are nearly 3,600 places in the country that are subject to some form of municipal government. I'm sure those municipalities can, in many cases, be subdivided into multiple communities. On visiting Regina, when my daughter and her family lived there, I was shocked to find the city is not served by VIA Rail. The capital of Saskatchewan and the province's second largest city has no passenger rail service. I was told the best VIA Rail option is in Saskatoon which is nearly a three hour drive. We are fortunate to live close to the Quebec City-Windsor rail corridor, the busiest passenger route in the nation. At its best VIA Rail is excellent in my experience and I highly recommend it. For most Canadian communities, however, passenger rail and commuter rail service is an unattainable dream. I think that is disgraceful, especially considering the times we live in when removing as many motor vehicles as possible from our overburdened highway system could provide a major boost for the transportation network as a whole and ultimately help our environment.
