SMITHS FALLS WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH COMES TO THE AID OF THOSE IMPACTED BY KENYAN FLOODING EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com There's always help for Kenya in Smiths Falls. Smiths Falls Westminster Presbyterian Church came to the aid of those impacted by Kenyan flooding, donating milk bag mats, Izzy dolls, and about $500, to those in need through Kenya Help. Kenya Help founder, Smiths Falls native Nancy Stevens, came to down to pick up the donations on Saturday, Aug. 11. When Stevens travelled to Kenya to see her projects this past February, she said, it hadn't rained in that part of the country for about a year. After she left, the area got three months of rain causing flooding that damaged homes and left people without food and water.

Flooding in Nairobi, Kenya. Photos courtesy of Abzed Osman "People lost everything," she said. "You can't get a break. It's one extreme or another. It makes me feel sad. It's heart wrenching. You make so much progress and then you get knocked back and people have no food and water." When the church heard of the flooding, they decided to help. The milk bag mats create a barrier between the ground and skin for people sleeping on them. There are parasites that can enter the skin by simple contact with the skin. "These mats have gone all over the world," said Lorna Stewart, a member of the Smiths Falls Westminster Presbyterian Church. "These are wonderful. They stop the parasites." The church has been involved in making the milk bag mats

Lorna Stewart photo Founder of Kenya Help, Nancy Stevens, collects milk bag mats and Izzy dolls donated by the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Smiths Falls. since 2011, when they donated mats to Haiti after the devastating earthquake. The mats are made using the bags that three litres of milk come in. "I really think it was God's way of using us for his work," said Stewart. About 175 bags are needed to make a child-sized mat. Residents at Van Horne assist with cutting the bags, which is very labour intensive. "I can finish a mat in about three hours," said Cathy Thom, another of the church's members, who is also the "master knitter" responsible for creating the Izzy dolls. "With the frame, it's faster."

The church hopes to get a couple more frames, that act as looms, to help weave the mats more quickly. Church members thanked all of the people who have been dropping off bags and weaved mats at Modern Thymes Natural Foods in town. The milk bag mats are being donated to people who live in Mathare and Ngong informal and formal settlements in and around Nairobi, where Kenya Help operates. Mainly, they'll be given to the grandmothers that the organization works with. "These mats are going to become someone's home," said Stevens. "I'm grateful to the church

and Smiths Falls for the support." Luckily, none of the Kenya Help's were completely ruined by the floods. However, Stevens said, a massive amount of food was lost at one of her projects during the floods. As a result, a raised storage shed was built to keep the food high and dry in the event of another flood. There was also concerned about the livestock at one of the projects. "I was scared the goats were going to get hoof rot," said Stevens, of the animals who would have been wading in the flood waters. So, the eight goats ended up staying indoors. Stevens said the local support for her organization has been so good, that she's "overwhelmed" with donations. "Right now, I have nowhere to put supplies," she said. In 2019, Stevens is headed back to Kenya to distribute items she's been stock piling. If you would like to donate, monetary donations are accepted. Other items are welcomed, but Stevens asks that they only be offered if they can be stored somewhere. To learn more about Kenya Help visit: https://kenyahelp.ca/.

HOLLIE PRATT-CAMPBELL hpratt-campbell@ metroland.com Natural, organic, artisan and local. That's what the NOAL stands for in Smiths Falls' NOAL Pantry, and the restaurant's owner, chef and baker, Laurie Anne Brennan, says she makes sure all the food she serves fits at least one of these categories. One of NOAL's signature meals, a chicken salad sandwich with mixed green salad. The organic chicken comes from a small organic producer, White Rock Farms, the Kloosterman family; the greens are a mix of local greens from Burt's Greenhouses, Odessa ON and certified organic greens from Bluegrass Farms, Bradley Wright and Leela Ramachandran. The salad dressing is made with Kricklewood's sunflower oil and honey. - Hollie Pratt-Campbell/Metroland

Hollie Pratt-Campbell/Metroland NOAL Pantry owner, cook and baker, Laurie Anne Brennan, with her neice, Gracie, who is a regular at the restaurant. Brennan and her nine siblings were born and raised in Smiths Falls, and as of Aug. 13, NOAL has been open for three years. The Smiths Falls Record News asked Brennan about her work as a cook, baker and business owner. SFRN: What inspires your cooking and baking? LAB: My inspiration for cooking comes from all of the chefs and cooks I have worked with over my 35year hospitality career, and

from the farmers and the food producers I get to work with every day. My baking inspiration comes from working with traditional and family recipes passed on to me from my mother and my sisters who are wonderful home bakers. SFRN: What makes NOAL Pantry a unique place to eat on the Smiths Falls food scene? LAB: NOAL Pantry, a local food eatery is a place where customers can come

and enjoy food that is prepared on site from raw product. The menu items have been created using as many local foods as we can access. Customers can be assured they are eating food that is prepared fresh to order. SFRN: What is your personal favourite thing on the NOAL menu? LAB: This is a tough one. I am a soup lover, so my daily soups are probably my favourite item to prepare and to eat. I often prepare the soups with my father in mind, who eats my soup most days. We serve our daily soups with our housemade all butter tea biscuit, something we make daily and are known for. SFRN: What has been your favourite moment at the café so far? LAB: There have been so many moments. Perhaps a catering done for Tweed and Martha Stewart was the guest of honour. Rumour has it, she liked my mixed berry pie and a tomato salad using local

afraid. If something does not work out, try it again and again until it does. NOAL Pantry is located at 6 Russell St. E., Smiths Falls. Find them on Facebook or give them a call at 613-706-2188. Check out more local restaurant profiles on Sweet Scoops and The Opinicon.

The open container system keeps items separated in a loose format for ease of collection, dumping, sorting and processing. The practice of placing recyclables (cans, glass and plastics) within clear bags has resulted in numerous issues at the facility that processes these materials at the end of the line in Renfrew. Plastic bags are not a recyclable material and as such should not be used to hold recyclables at the curb. If you are finding that you may have more than one recycling container per week, please consider one or more of the following options: • flatten as many of your metal cans and plastic bottles as possible; • place out a second container which may be easily dumped (such as a cardboard box); or • consider purchase of a second blue/yellow bin container at a local hardware store or local Town Hall. Her father, Dave Henderson was the first on the 18th green to douse his daughters - Brooke and sister/caddie Brittany - with champagne. Mom Darlene Henderson was also in on the celebrations. "It's amazing," she told lpga.com of the moment. "The crowds here have been amazing all week and it's really a dream come true. It's been a tough year, and to get this for Canada I'm really happy," she said struggling to keep her emotions in check. It's the first time since 1973 that a Canadian has won this national championship. Henderson fought the ele-

ments, as the temperature dipped about 20 degrees Celsius Thursday to Sunday, and the rain started. She said she was used to this kind of weather, as she won in New Zealand last year under similar weather conditions. Henderson shot a final round 7-under 65. Her four-day total was 267 (-21), earning her the

US$337,500 prize. In a tight race through much of Sunday with American Angel Yin, Henderson hit her stride on the back nine, as she strung together four birdies to pull away with the win. It's her seventh win on the LPGA tour - her second this season. Yin was second at 17under par.

NEW VISITOR CENTRE OFFERS AN EDUCATION IN CANNABIS AND A GLIMPSE OF TWEED'S INNER WORKINGS TWEED OPENS A NEW VISITOR CENTRE AT THEIR SMITHS FALLS HEADQUARTERS HOLLIE PRATT-CAMPBELL hpratt-campbell@ metroland.com Just shy of 10 years after the Hershey plant closed in Smiths Falls in December 2008, folks are once again able to tour the iconic building at 1 Hershey Dr. The product may be a little different, but the mission is of the same spirit: To give members of the public a glimpse of what goes on within the factory's walls and educate them about the products and how they're made.

"We now have something to do for all the U.S. licence plates that turn up here and drive around the lot slowly, trying to figure out what the hell's going on," remarked Bruce Linton, Tweed co-founder and CEO of Canopy Growth Corp., at the grand opening of Tweed's new visitor centre on Thursday, Aug. 23. "They come knock at the door and say 'I was here about 15 years ago, do you guys do tours still?'" Indeed, Linton noted that part of the aim is to keep those beloved chocolate factory memories alive. "We want that nostalgia of this is where you walked when you were 10 years old and grandma and grandpa brought you to the chocolate factory," he said as he guided members of the me-

"The good news is the last person who exited that door was exactly nine years old, and it's 10 years later, which makes them exactly 19, so we'll be able to welcome them back," he said, explaining that the visitor centre is "an age gated access area." And for those looking for even more nostalgia, there's now chocolate being made in the factory once again, in addition to the cannabis production. Hummingbird Chocolate, an award-winning chocolatier out of Almonte, is now producing at 1 Hershey Dr. "I think it's perfect," Lin-

Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow said that when council approved Tweed to set up shop in the empty factory four years ago, the hope was that it would inject renewal into the community. "But never in our wildest dreams would we have anticipated what we have here today," he noted. "In the back of our minds we thought 'what if - what if recreational cannabis would someday be legal in Canada? What would it mean to this facility?' And we've seen this incredible transformation over the past year." Originally, Linton and his team hoped to take up approximately one third of the building and employ about 100 people, Pankow recalled. "And where are they today? Well, Hershey had about 625 people when it closed. The Tweed campus locally is I believe over 700 and well on their way to over 1,000. What kind of impact does that have on our community? Absolutely incredible."

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

The Smiths Falls Record News visited Tweed's new visitor centre. We took a look at how it educates members of the public about cannabis and what the centre's presence will mean for the town of Smiths Falls.

accurate, accessible and interactive way, explains Rachelle Campbell who is both a cannabis subject matter expert and a registered nurse. "Not many people know that we all have a system in our bodies for cannabis," Campbell said of the exhibit she worked on about the endocannabinoid system. The exhibit explains how thephytocannabinoids in cannabis work with this system to produce the desired effect. Craig Munro, another cannabis subject matter expert, is a horticulturalist by trade. "I worked on the content with our creative team in terms of plants," Munro explains. "I helped with terminology, some of the sliding pieces and stuff and some of the animations to make sure we could get it as accurate as possible." Other exhibits include a terpene bar, which demonstrates the different aromas of various plants, an educational film and displays about the history of cannabis use, and an upper-level walkabout where visitors can view the cannabis growth areas and the chocolate being made. Linton says that education is key when it comes to cannabis use. "We did survey of some of our patient base [and asked] do you

qualify yourself as really knowledgeable, moderately knowledgeable or not knowledgeable on cannabis. And the interesting thing is people who said they were really knowledgeable were in fact just really confident. So what we have to do is put information where that confidence is because that's kind of a dangerous thing." Of course, the question on everyone's mind was, when will Tweed's core products be available in the visitor centre's gift shop, among the various sweatshirts, water bottles and other swag currently for sale? Tweed's parent company, Canopy Growth, and the Town of Smiths Falls have lobbied the province to allow for a retail store at Tweed's production facility in town. However, the former Liberal government denied the request. Recently, they resumed their lobbying efforts with the new Conservative government. Linton says he hopes the cannabis itself will be able to be sold in the gift shop within the next year. His vision is for people to "come here, see it, leave with it. If you go to any brewery you can do that, any distillery, any wine producer. We're governed by the same set of rules as they are. It seems kind of odd that they wouldn't allow us to have that same amenity." Tweed's products will, howev-

ABOUT US

I recently read Sarah Selecky's new book, Radiant Shimmering Light, and it got me thinking about what has become known in popular culture as "wellness". What does it mean to be "well" and how much should it cost? Are there items you can purchase that will allow you to achieve this aim more efficiently? If there are, count me in. I will gladly fork over my hard-earned dollars to live a more serene existence. The trouble is, I'm also a bit of a skeptic. My mom always told me that if something seems to good to be true, it usually is. How amazing would it be if rubbing lavender essential oil on my feet before bed helped manage my insomnia, or if taking a specific vitamin cocktail at the first sign of a throat tickle banished the common cold virus? I have spent more money than I wish to admit on these and other items because I want, so badly, for these cures to be true. Yet in my heart, I know it's all a sham - which is probably why this novel made me literally laugh out loud more times than I can count on my two hands. If anything in this world needs to be satirized, it's the "wellness industry". It's ridiculous enough to be funny, but also not *too* destructive at the same time. Unlike the current political climate, which is becoming increasing difficult to effectively satirize because it itself resembles

satire and that's just sad, there is nothing particularly dark and sinister about someone purchasing a vaginal jade egg on a quest for better orgasms. It's not like Gwyneth Paltrow is out to actively harm and mislead people with Goop. She makes (A LOT OF) money selling an aspirational brand. If people want to pay twice as much for a bottle of water that's not stripped of electrons, and that makes them feel better and healthier in their own skin, there is nothing particularly *wrong* with that - but few of us would deny it deserves to be mocked. Moreover, at what point does profiting from your passion become off-putting commodification? Who is really at fault for the appalling number of people who waste an astonishing amount of money on largely ineffective wellness products? Are those who profit from them evil marketing overlords or are these consumers responsible for their own regrettable purchasing choices? Perhaps more to the point: if questionable wellness-related purchases genuinely make one happy, and maybe even offer a slight benefit (even of the placebo variety) is there really a huge problem here? Some people waste their money on beer, others on essential oils. I've never heard anyone accuse craft beer makers of being evil marketing overlords. So what is the difference here, really? WHO WE ARE OPINION

IT'S FUN TO BE A BROOKE HENDERSON SUPPORTER LAURIE WEIR IS A HUGE FAN OF THIS TOWN'S SUPERSTAR GOLF PHENOMENON. LAURIE WEIR Column

If you missed the LPGA's CP Women's Open, then you missed history being made as Smiths Falls golfing phenomenon Brooke Henderson hoisted that illusive cup Sunday afternoon in Regina, Sask.Brooke, along with her sister/caddie, Brittany Henderson, was the first Canadian to win this national championship since Jocelyne Bourassa did it in 1973. "That's a long time," she said, her trademark smile blossomed.

That three-foot birdie putt prompted a champagne bath by her father, Dave, who, along with mom Darlene, were in attendance to make the victory that much sweeter. It was nice to win it for Canada, she said, for her family, who has had a tough summer, as both Darlene and Dave lost their fathers this year. Both men, Bob Moir and Clem Henderson were huge supporters of their family, and were especially proud of both Brooke and Brittany. It was tough to lose them this year, just a month apart, but Brooke said she had some special angels looking out for her. She said it was like everything aligned as she held the lead throughout the final day, chased only by Angel Yin, who ended up four back for second

place. It was nice to see Brooke handle herself with such poise, grace, humility and humour: "I still have some (champagne) in my ear, so it wasn't that fun." What a great role model! She makes us all proud to say we're a fan.

SNOOP DOGGING For those enjoying the Tweed Shindig on Saturday, they were in for an extra "surprise" as Snoop Dogg made a guest appearance. It was the worst-kept secret in town. But he hooked up with Mayor Shawn Pankow for dinner at Chuckles Jack, where both the mayor and Chef Ram smiled from ear to ear in their photo ops with the popular rapper. Snoop, when you could see him through the purple haze, rocked the crowd of more than a few thousand people. Well done, Tweed on another successful event. LOMBARDY NATIVE CO-FOUNDS VIRTUAL PERSONAL TRAINING COMPANY EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Personal training moves into the 21st century. Lombardy native Leslie Richardson and her cofounder Jessica Lawton, both new moms, have created and launched boldr, a virtual fitness experience using video technology to connect clients with a personal trainer online. In Smiths Falls, Richardson said she grew up playing a lot of sports. But as you get older, it's harder to organize sports with friends and fitness can become more isolating. "Your fitness needs change," she said. Often the gym becomes the only option. As a new mom, Richardson went to a "big box gym" and spent thousands of dollars on personal training sessions after trying to lose some extra weight by working out using online videos. But, neither worked. So, one day, while waiting for her trainer on the treadmill the idea for boldr came to her. "I wanted the benefits of personal trainer without having to pay $8,000," said Richardson. "I just couldn't stomach it." Richardson credits her entrepreneurial spirit to her small-town upbringing and passing the values that came from rural living down to her children. "I think all the best things come from small towns. It makes you industrious and hardworking. It's a different mentality," she said. "If it's broken, fix

it." While Skype trainers and fitness apps have entered the market, Richardson said boldr is taking the virtual training sessions to the next level offering group and single personal training sessions at an affordable rate. You're just three clicks away to a personal training session wherever you are with an internet connection. "It really is a streamlined process," said Richardson. Boldr was first launched last summer and has been gaining momentum. So far, 130 members have joined. And, Richardson said, there has yet to be anyone who's fallen off. "We're quite pleased with it," she said. "We're the only fitness company doing this." Video technology has evolved so that all you need in an internet connection to link up with a personal trainer and get your fitness goals on track - even allowing you to connect with people in your life while you work out. "It doesn't matter where your friends and family are, you can get together and workout," said Richardson. "I think we have really upped the game." Being a woman in tech makes Richardson proud. "I think we're changing it up. I think it's great when women are leading a new undertaking," she said, of herself and her cofounder. The virtual fitness company is based on three pillars: affordability, convenience and results.

Richardson said while anyone can use the service, it's particularly helpful for people in rural communities who might have a limited number of fitness facilities that you have to drive to get to. "You probably have one gym and a country road you can walk on, which is great," she said. "But when you get to the gym, you might not know how to work out." While you can get personal training at the gym, the economy of sale works in boldr's favour allowing the company to charge $8 per session in a six-month package offering 48 sessions, and $99 for unlimited sessions. Up to six participants can participate in a session with one personal trainer. Working out with others, is a good way to share the pain and results. "You're just happy to have other people suffer with you," joked Richardson. "Why sweat alone?" You can also access static videos that target certain parts of the body that you can explore at your leisure. No equipment, aside from a yoga mat, is needed to workout with boldr - creating a nofrills fitness experience in your own environment. "Our motto is to motivate, not intimidate," said Richardson. Clients use their own body weight to workout with minimal space required. "You can make your body work for you," said Richardson. To check out boldr fit visit: www.boldrfit.com.

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com

Evelyn Harford/Metroland Smiths Falls police officer Const. Mitchell Salmon will be participating in the 2018 Ride to Remember - Memorial Tour in September - a 700 km treck from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ont., all the way to Ottawa. "I think the longest that I've ever rode, prior to this, was maybe 40 kilometres," he said. But Salmon is up for the challenge to conquer 900 kilometres next month. Salmon said the challenge of endurance riding gives you something to work for. "You have to will yourself through the hurt," he said. Salmon started cycling after trying a triathlon, when he realized he really liked the bike leg. He's been training since the beginning of this year for this endurance ride, training indoors, and going on group and solo road rides. "I'm really excited," Salmon said. "It's heartwarming to know all the guys and the ladies and gentlemen that take part in it, because you're not only going to commemorate the fallen police officers, but you're going to support the families ... which is huge for me." By doing the ride, he said, it will help raise awareness for all the police do in the communities they serve and the scarifies they make - including the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives - to fulfil their duty. The tragic events in Fredericton, where two officers, Const. Sara Burns

and Const. Robb Costello of the Fredericton Police Force, were killed in the line of duty, underscore the ride's importance for Salmon. "The female officer had actually concluded her shift," he said. "It's refreshing to know that she was there doing her job, but she was willing to serve her community even though her time was up. That's what we do, and that's what we strive to do." When other officers are killed in the line of duty, like the two officers in New Brunswick this August, officers in the Smiths Falls Police Service talk about it, said Salmon. "While Smiths Falls is only a population of 9,000, all it takes is one person to be upset and for something to happen, or for somebody to have a bad day," he said. "It can happen to anybody, anywhere. It's just something you have to be prepared for and train for." The Smiths Falls Police Association, the Smiths Falls Police Services Board and Smiths Falls Police Chief Mark MacGillivray are fully behind Salmon, the only officer from town who's participating. "I can't thank everybody enough for all the support," he said.

Smiths Falls police officer Const. Mitchell Salmon is participating in the annual Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember in honour of those killed in the line of duty. The official ride is 700 kilometres, but Salmon is a sucker for punishment and will be tacking on another 200-kilometre leg from Niagara Falls to the Ontario Police College, located in Aylmer, Ont., where the four-day ride begins on Sept. 26. Riders depart from the college, where they'll cycle down the Path of Honour, a path lined with maple trees - which commemorate fallen police officers - and ends at the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial on Parliament Hill, which honours the 800 names of fallen officers. Salmon will be riding with about 50 other people, including officers from the Kingston Police Service and the Brockville Police Service - where he got his start as a young a special constable in 2012. But it's not just police officers cycling to Ottawa; the ride is open to anyone who's been impacted by someone killed in the line of duty. "It's a family ordeal. It encompasses anybody who's ever lost anyone in the line of duty," said Salmon. "We're one big family, so we take care of our own." And as a new father of two young kids, family is very important for him. "Family is massive," said Salmon. "I have two small kids. God forbid, (if) anything should happen to me or one of my colleagues, it's very nice to know that there's so many people out there to support you and continue living for your husband, wife, brother, sister, daughter, and so on." The ride is longer than anything Salmon, who has only been cycling seriously for about three years, has ever done before.

SMITHS FALLS-BASED CHESS FEDERATION OF CANADA GOVERNOR ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO JOIN THE LOCAL CHESS COMMUNITY EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Jeremy Sztuka, a Chess Federation of Canada governor from Smiths Falls, has been playing chess his whole life, now boasting an impressive rating of above 1600 - about 900 shy of the Grand Master rating of 2500. Sztuka is hosting a chess tournament in town this month and encourages others to get involved in a game that he has passion and love for. "If I want an adrenaline rush, I play chess," said Sztuka. "A lot of people wouldn't think that." While most people would pass chess off as being a boring game, Sztuka says it's the furthest thing from the truth - comparing

his rush he gets from chess to the satisfaction his brothers get from racing cars. "It's a lot of tactical, strategic thinking," he said. And, when games of chess can last five hours, it can really become a form of meditation. "It's crazy," said Sztuka. Sztuka began playing chess in his early childhood. "My father got me into it," he said. Chess runs in the family. Sztuka's dad learned from his father, who was a Polish prisoner of war. There came a time when Sztuka's grandfather and father would play chess all Sunday. Finally, Sztuka's dad got good enough to beat his own father. History would repeat itself. Sztuka

struggled to beat his dad in his younger years, but around 13 years old, he learned to beat his own father. "It was very challenging," he said. "Chess is more enjoyable when there's a significant risk of defeat." Because there were no chess clubs when Sztuka was in school, he relied on games with his father to improve his skill. "The only person who could beat me was my dad," he said. It was only in July 2016 that Sztuka started playing at organized chess tournaments after not playing for many years. "Twenty years went by and I didn't play a single game - not online - nothing," he said. But over time,

his skills didn't appear to waiver. When he first started in 2016, his chess rating was above 1200 and now it's above 1600. "That puts me in a whole different class of play," he said. Sztuka plays about four to six moves ahead. He said if you want to improve your ranking, you need to be playing four moves ahead. "The top people in the country probably play many more moves ahead than that." Sztuka, who now plays out of the RA Chess Club in Ottawa, after being encouraged by his wife who noticed how passionate he was about chess, is one of about 23 Chess Federation of Canada governors, and one of four in eastern Ontario. Sztuka has played in tournaments in Toronto and across eastern Ontario, usually, doing quite

He even competed in the Canadian Open Chess Tournament last year in Sault Ste. Marie. "It's like the Stanley Cup of chess," he said. Sztuka tells would-be newcomers to the chess community not to be intimidated by other players. "The only way you're going to get better is playing against people stronger than you." Sztuka is hosting a chess tournament - the second annual Smith Falls Open on Saturday, Aug. 18.

He encourages people to come out, even newcomers to the chess community. If you're interested in getting involved with chess, Sztuka suggests first playing online and see how you like it. If you like it, you can test your skills in real life. Every first, third and fourth Tuesday of the month, in most cases, a small group of people meet at the Smiths Falls Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. to play casual (nonrated) chess.

Smiths Falls Police Services Board In our busy lives, seems there’s so much to do. Our minds often race, and our vehicles too. Consumed with ‘whatever’ is coming up next; the meeting, the deadline or incoming text. But sharing our roads, on their very own journeys, are students embarking on a voyage of learning. Each of them precious, with dreams yet untold. And each one deserving, of care on the road. So as we travel life’s roads, though our minds may deride us, let us be mindful of those, who journey beside us.

EXPERIENCE LOCAL FLAVOURS, OLD SCHOOL CHARM AT THE OPINICON HOLLIE PRATT-CAMPBELL hpratt-campbell@metroland.com The Opinicon has long been known for its rich history in the Rideau Lakes area. A historical photo of The Opinicon - photo courtesy of The Opinicon Located on the lake of the same name, the resort was originally built as a private residence in the late 1870s, and the site opened as a commercial operation in 1921 as the Opinicon Club; shortly thereafter, the property's first cottages were built, many of which still stand today. Over the decades that followed, the resort became a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Families, boaters and cottagers would stop by for a meal or an ice-cream cone, or stay for an extended period of time at one of the cottages on the picturesque property. One of these people was Fiona McKean, who spent time at the resort as a child and longed to restore and modernize "The Grand Old Dame of the Rideau" after it fell into disrepair in more recent years and closed in 2012. In 2015, she purchased the property with

her husband, Shopify CEO Tobi Latke, and their efforts to reinvigorate the resort while also maintaining its signature historic charm have once again made The Opinicon a destination in the area. The dining room today at The Opinicon. - Photo courtesy of The Opinicon Today, The Opinicon employs over 100 people, most of whom are locals. Head chef Angela Baldwin is a native of the Lansdowne area, and was raised on a small beef farm. The Smiths Falls Record News asked Baldwin about what inspires her as a chef and life at The Opinicon in general. Here are her answers: Opinicon head chef Angela Baldwin. - Photo courtesy of Angela Baldwin SFRN: What drew you to the profession of chef ? AB: We always had a garden so from an early age I had a great appreciation of growing vegetables. I always enjoyed baking with my mother. The smell of fresh bread is one of those smells that brings me right back to my childhood. I always had a sweet tooth so I was always making cakes and cook-

I loved having family and friends taste my creations and delighted in the reactions. SFRN: What inspires the food at Opinicon? How did you choose what to put on the menu? AB: I try to use as many local ingredients as I can. There are many suppliers from the local area that we love to support. Summertime brings so many wonderful flavours and combinations. We keep it simple, trying not to mess with those already beautiful delicious ingredients. The

menu is a bit different - I try to have something for everyone. The fresh salads are a favourite as all of the ingredients we use are from the local area. I have picked up a style over the years from different kitchens that I have worked in, but I mostly stick to Mediterranean style cooking with a few twists. Every day, we have market features, and we base these on whatever is coming in the door from our suppliers. My wonderful sous chef James Bryce is typically in charge of See SOMETHING, page 25

AMY HIMMELMAN HAS WORLD CHAMPION BUCKSKIN IN VALLATA LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Amy Himmelman has a good male in her life - several actually, but there is one shining star who has captured her heart and that of many others in the equine world. Dale, or Vallata as he's known in the show ring, is a two-year-old buckskin stallion, owned and worked by Himmelman of Little Rock Farm between Perth and Smiths Falls. "He's a world champion," Amy said. "He's got a playful side and he bits a bit too," she added with a laugh. It was in July when she, and her son and his wife, Eddie and Jenna Stewart, loaded up the horse trailer for the International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) World Show in Cloverdale, Indiana. Himmelman said she was hoping to get into the top five.

She said the arena was five acres in size and had 500 stalls, including the riding ring. During the warmup event, the judges unanimously agreed that Vallata was the best of the best. "On the Wednesday, Brooklyn (Burke) did some live streaming so everyone back home could watch," she said. "I was getting pretty excited when they kept announcing the number eight in the world, number seven, and he still hadn't been called." It was when they announced Vallata as the Grand Champion that the elation overtook them. "I was there to watch it all unfold," said Jenna. "It was amazing! When she entered the ring for her preliminary world show I thought I was going to puke! I was so nervous for her ... very stiff competition. When they called out

Don Trout/Submitted Amy Himmelman and her buckskin, a two-year-old named Vallata, is a World Champion. her number for Grand Champion I cried. Her face lit up ... a feeling only one can imagine." Jenna added that so much hard work goes into showing horses. "She is certainly one to give to the community it was nice to see her dreams come true." Vallata earned Grand Champion Stallion at the

IBHA Warmup to the World, IBHA World Champion Open, two-year-old stallion, and IBHA Reserve World Champion, amateur stallion - all ages. Himmelman said she found her horse at four months of age in Iowa. He won as a weanling last year. She has shown horses all her life, but on her farm,

she offers lessons, boarding, trail rides and camps. She had extra training help from Katy Drummond as Vallata prepared for this competition. "Katy helped me in March and April," she said. "It's been very rewarding to raise them and show them. Exciting for a small farm like ours to have a grand champion." So who was looking after the farm while they were away? "Mason was," she said. "I told him he was in charge to tell (me) what was going on while we were away. He's out salmon fishing today (Aug. 16)." Mason, who is nine years of age, has been active on the farm since he was born. His younger brother, Casey, 17 months, is also an avid horseman. "Casey has his own stallion," Himmelman said. "He's got a yearling named Kash."

Vallata was sired by Ckade, a four-time ABRA/ IBHA World Champion Stallion with an AQHA World Show top three horse, and five-time AQHA honour roll top 10. In 2016, Vallata earned the IBHA World Champion Stallion, the IBHA Reserved World Champion Amateur Stallion, two and under; OQHA High Point Open, yearling; OQHA High Point Amateur, EOQHA High Point Stallion Open and the EOQHA High Point Amateur Stallion. As for Vallata's immediate future, Himmelman said she's going to take a break from the show ring for a while and let him enjoy the barn life - and he'll be a father soon. "I'm so proud," Himmelman said. "We have a number one stallion and he's been bred to three mares this year and they'll drop foals in the spring. We'll see how he produces."

AB: We do cater to our house guests, and we have up to 100 people staying with us at one time. That being said, our guests only account for one third of the customers we see in a day.SFRN: Do you source your ingredients locally?AB: As I said, a lot of the ingredients we use come from the local area. 90 per cent of our produce comes from local growers, most of our chicken comes from Glenburnie and our beef from Tweed and Harrowsmith. I am also now looking into some local lamb, which is really exciting. We use many processed ingredients as well that come from local growers and producers. Everything from mustard to pasta we source from the area.SFRN: What is your absolute favourite dish of all time?AB: My favourite

dish would have to be fresh linguine and clams, the ultimate Italian dish, with some fresh tomatoes, herbs and Parmesan, served with some fresh bread and wine. Delish! SFRN: Do you have a favourite ingredient (to cook with)? AB: My favourite ingredient would have to be flour. I know it may sound strange, but I love bread. There are so many styles and types of bread and there's just something so gratifying about making a fresh loaf. I also love fennel. The fragrant little bulb is so versatile I can put it in practically anything. SFRN: Anything else you want to add? AB: The Opinicon Kitchen is a very young kitchen with lots of room to grow. Our commitment is to evolve and continue to use local ingredients. The Opinicon is located at 1697 Chaffeys Lock Rd. in Elgin, Ontario. FULL LIST OF ELECTION CANDIDATES FOR RIDEAU LAKES TOWNSHIP

In July, a story ran in this newspaper about the candidates who will be running in the municipalities in Leeds and Grenville. In Rideau Lakes Township, Ward 3 and 4 were inadvertently missed. Those seeking a seat in these wards include: Claire Klein-Gunnewiek, Linda Carr and Joan Delaney in Ward 3, and in Ward 4 (amalgamated with Ward 5 - Newboro), candidates include incumbents Bob Lavoie and Ron Pollard, along with newcomers Keitha Burtch and Wendy Talbot. There are two councillor positions for each ward. In Ward 1, Cathy Livingston (incumbent), Paula Banks, Carolyn Bresee, Kimberly Dawn Brown, and Kris Sheldon are in the running. In Ward 2, Jeff Banks (incumbent) will try for another win against Ron Holman (current mayor), and Marcia Maxwell. Running for mayor will be Rob Dunfield and Arie Hoogenboom. The configuration in Rideau Lakes has been restructured with the elimination of the Newboro (Ward 5) ward.

Candidates Debate The Upper Rideau Lake Association has created a web page and is hosting an All Candidates Meeting on Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the North Crosby Community Centre (875 - 8th Concession Rd). RIDING WITH GRAMPA WAS ALWAYS A BUMPY RIDE EARL LEARNED A RUMBLE SEAT LESSON ON NORTHCOTE ROAD, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Halfway to Briscoe's General Store, there was Earl standing on the side of the road waving frantically with one of his running shoes in his hand.

- Mary Cook

I started to cry, wondering if Earl was laying dead in the ditch, or at the very least had broken his legs ... both of them. But Grampa didn't seem to be the least concerned. I turned in the seat, and there were Emerson and Everett, as calm as you please, as if we lost a sibling every day while driving in Grampa's rumble seat car. Their hair was flaying all over their faces, and they were grinning like they had just been given a dollar. They didn't seem to have a care in the world. Just before we came to that part of the Northcote Side Road, before the last long stretch into Renfrew, where we left the

gravel, and the road turned into cement, Grampa, looking neither left nor right to see if any other cars were coming, pulled a U-turn and headed back home. Halfway to Briscoe's General Store, there was Earl standing on the side of the road waving frantically with one of his running shoes in his hand. Grampa ground to a halt, Earl climbed into the back and slid right down into the very depths of the hole. It looked like he wasn't going to take any more chances of diving into the ditch. Mother didn't even ask Earl how he got a scraped knee. She was more interested in the green grass stain on his good Sunday shirt. She did get out the iodine and dabbed the cut and ordered him to go upstairs and change his clothes. Earl limped around a bit, but didn't seem to have any injuries other than the skinned knee. He did say though, the iodine hurt a lot more than the scrape he got when he nosedived into the ditch out of Grampa's rumble seat car along the Northcote Side Road. It wasn't the first time we lost my brother Earl out of the rumble seat of Grampa's car. The first time, it was Emerson's fault. Wrestling in the rumble seat for the best position, much bigger than Earl, Emerson gave him a mighty push, and like a loon diving into a lake, Earl went sailing into the ditch on the Northcote Side Road. But this time, it was Earl's fault, plain and simple. Every time Grampa came from Ottawa, we five kids had to have a ride in his rumble seat car. My sister Audrey and I were content to sit in the front with Grampa, listening to his tales of Ottawa where he lawnbowled, played golf and ate at Bowles Lunch. The day that Earl took the second dive was entirely his fault. The three brothers had climbed into the back, and Earl decided he would sit on the outside of the seat, with his back against the window that separated the rumble seat from the front of the car. Audrey kept rapping on the window, making mad gestures at Earl, trying to get him to sit down in the hole, but of course, he couldn't see her with his back to the glass. The Northcote Road was full of holes and ruts, which should have slowed down Grampa, but he seemed to get special delight in hit-

ting every one of them, as we bounced along at a good clip. We tore past Briscoe's General Store like a bolt of lightning, my teeth chattering from the rough ride with my eyes glued to the road. It was Audrey who saw the whole performance in the rumble seat, and she almost caused Grampa to leave the road when she grabbed his arm and told him to stop the car, we had lost Earl. Grampa never eased the gas a fraction, and simply said, "We'll pick him up on the way back."

36th Annual Smiths Falls and District Muscular Dystrophy Voluntary Boot Drive

Saturday September 1st, 8am to 3pm on Beckwith St. About Muscular Dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is the name for a group of neuromuscular disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles that control body movement. As muscle tissue weakens and wastes away, it is replaced by fatty and connective tissue. Each form of muscular dystrophy is caused by an error in a specific gene associated with muscle function; however, specific disorders within this group vary in many ways. The

muscles involved are different from one disorder to another. The severity of the symptoms, the age at which the symptoms appear, how fast the symptoms progress, and what pattern of inheritance the disorder follows, are all factors which differ among the various forms of muscular dystrophy. Even within a specific disorder, several individuals with the same disorder may experience the disorder and its symptoms quite differently.

Muscular dystrophies are genetic disorders. Forms of muscular dystrophy can be passed on from generation to generation, or they can occur

spontaneously in a single individual as the result of a mutation of a particular gene. Contrary to popular belief, muscular dystrophy is not exclusively a childhood disorder - anyone can be affected. While some types of muscular dystrophy are first evident in infancy or early childhood, other types may not appear until later in life. Over time, persons with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some individuals, the disorder is fatal. There is currently no cure.

DREAM TEAM

Dawson Hi, I am Dawson. I was brought to Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) on a cold day in March. I have a lot of love to give but just need a patient partner. I might need some extra encouragement, and treats will help, I can assure you of that. Underneath my handsome, bashful exterior is a reservoir of love and wisdom. If you are patient enough to tap into it, I want nothing more than to show my affection. I might need a quiet home and a little more understanding, but I promise, once I feel safe I'll be loyal to you all of my days. Will you take a chance on me? Please meet me at LAWS. You'll won't regret it!

Plumpkin Hi, I am Plumpkin and they think I am about six years old. I was found as a stray cat, and so far no one came looking for me! I'm a voluptuous beauty ready for my forever home! I am super quiet and rarely meow unless I want a person to notice me. I'd be very happy to share a quiet home with someone who can offer me a daily brush which I enjoy especially if you allow me to rub my face against the bristles too. I would benefit from some playtime and have no access to food all the time. A reward after playtime would be great too, it doesn't have to be food. Food is not love they said. I am happy to lounge the days away and would love to sit next to you to watch TV. Would you please give me a chance? I am available at Pet Valu in Almonte and can't wait to meet my new forever family.

Ulyss Meet Ulyss, who arrived in April. His transformation since his arrival has been remarkable. He's is very comfortable with all his cat buddies and enjoys human touch. Although he's not a lap cat and can be a little shy at times, we are confident that, with the right owner, he will continue to feel more at ease and will make a good pet. Please meet this black beauty, with his sleek, shiny fur and amazing green eyes, at LAWS.

LAWS photos

Meeting Harmony is going to be a pleasure, as she's a friendly, about two-year-old female cat with great personality. Harmony arrived very thin and with a patchy fur. She's working on looking pretty again, with our help. Your reward will be to see her to continue to blossom once you take her into your heart and home. Please meet Harmony at LAWS -- she's worth the trip! Follow us at www.facebook.com/lanarkanimals and/ or lanarkanimals.ca. LAWS is located at 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.

JEFF MAGUIRE WOULD RATHER TAKE A FERRY THAN A BRIDGE JEFF MAGUIRE Column

Ferries have always fascinated me! To be truthful any vessel that carries cargo across wide bodies of water is of interest to me. But ferries are different than ships or barges. Ferries specialize in moving human cargo, most often with owners' vehicles or bicycles stowed safely below. Ferries are also big commercial carriers taking vans, cargo trucks, tractor trailers and buses from

FLYERS

point A. to point B. and often trimming conventional road trips considerably in the process. Recently Kathleen and I embarked on our latest ferry trip. Well, it was very short so perhaps I should call it a "ride" rather than a trip. We were on our way to visit our good friends Frank and Wendy LeBlanc at their new home in Picton. For those unfamiliar with the Lake Ontario community it is located in Prince Edward County (PEC) an area which, in recent years in particular, has become a magnet for

COUPONS

tourists. If you look at a map you will see that PEC is, in effect, an island. A wide swath of land connected to the rest of Ontario by bridges and yes, by the Glenora Ferry. We had a choice of routes - several in fact - but we deliberately headed for tiny Glenora just so we could enjoy the experience of another run on that particular vessel. What makes the Glenora Ferry unique is that it is part of the provincial highway system. Follow Highway 33, better known in the region as the 'Loyalist Parkway', southwest from Kingston and you will pass through small centres such as Bath and Adolphustown. The highway ends at

the Adolphus Reach, an inlet from Lake Ontario. That's where the ferry takes over. The free, yearround service, operated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), moves vehicles of all sizes and their passengers across the narrow strait to Glenora. From there it's a short nine kilometre hop into Picton. The Glenora Ferry is not unique in Ontario. There are other services operated by MTO including one from Kingston to Wolfe Island and another from either Leamington or Kingsville to Pelee Island in Lake Erie. I have travelled on both those ferries over the years. Certainly the short run

Michigan from Ontario along the picturesque St. Clair River as well. Closer to home, along the Ottawa River, ferries transport vehicles between Ontario and Quebec. The locally famous Quyon Ferry is a good example which I also recommend. It runs from Fitzroy Harbour in rural west Ottawa to the Quebec village of the same name. We've taken ferry trips for decades on our travels. I can't recall one that I didn't enjoy. I'll take a ferry instead of a bridge any time!

FERRIES ENJOYABLE PART OF THE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

to and from Glenora is picturesque. You have just enough time to get out of your vehicle and take in the spectacular views including the huge bluff that rises to Lake on the Mountain near Picton! Three days later we made the reverse trip on the way home. I never miss the opportunity to ride on a ferry. I will go out of my way to enjoy another ferry excursion. Kathy has largely overcome a childhood fear of ferries resulting from a stormy excursion to Walpole Island in the St. Clair River. Now there is yet another good Ontario ferry trip, from Walpole to Algonac, Michigan. Kathy and I have made the crossing many times since her childhood adventure and highly recommend it. There are other ferry crossings to

horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 If you want to get out and see the sights, you have to plan an excursion, Aries. Start planning a vacation and don’t forget to invite a pal along for the trip.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, indecisiveness may cost you in the days ahead. Try to come to a decision on an important situation so you can begin moving forward once again.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Do not be quick to accept the word “no,” Taurus. If you are seeking a promotion, it may take another round of negotiations to sell your position to a supervisor.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Sometimes you don’t see the purpose behind certain actions, Scorpio. Don’t hesitate to ask questions to clear things up. Forge ahead and things will become clearer.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, some things are at play and you may need to gather some facts. Don’t try to piece things together, but rather start at the beginning and get a comprehensive view.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sooner or later, if you try different things you are bound to stumble on the right course of action, Sagittarius. It just may take longer than you initially expected.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You have to hunker down and work through tasks that hold little interest for you, Cancer. Success comes from tending to all of the details, even those that are less interesting.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

This Special Feature will be published in Full Colour on Thursday, September 6th, 2018

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Don’t worry if you cannot get your act together just yet, Capricorn. You will find your groove soon enough and everything will ultimately fall in place.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Plenty of opportunities to make big changes are on the horizon, Leo. You need to figure out what it is you want to do with yourself and where to make change.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Some things can’t be avoided forever, Aquarius. If you feel like you are running away from problems or things you don’t like, you may need to confront them.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, sit quietly aside and let others talk while you listen. Listening can be a great way to learn about others as well as yourself. Use this time wisely.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Funny things happen when you least expect them, Pisces. Just when you may have thought a situation was dire, some fun will change your opinion. 0830
