BUCK OR TWO OPENING IN SMITHS FALLS A FAMILY AFFAIR EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Once again there's a dollar store in the south end of Smiths Falls. Buck or Two Plus opened its doors in the Settlers Ridge Centre, formerly the County Fair Mall, on Monday, Aug. 20. Co-owners and siblings, Christine Bles, who works as the store's manager, and Chris Saumure, also the vice-president of The Saumure Group (which owns the Settlers Ridge Centre) wanted to bring a dollar store back to the property, deciding to purchase the franchise in late 2017. A Dollar Tree had been in the mall before being evicted when the mall's demolition was put into motion, prior to Saumure Group step-
ping in at the 11th hour. "It's a leap of faith to jump into a building that's been sitting vacant for a long time," said Bles. "So, Chris and I had discussions and chatted and said, 'You know what, the best way to do it is lead by example.'" This is Bles' first foray into the world of retail. "I jumped in with both feet," she said. "It's been a huge learning curve." Though, Bles credits the great training from the Buck or Two franchise for how things have being going so far. "What I'm enjoying is that it's so community based. It's not unusual for me to see people that I know, or acquaintances," said Bles. "It's really great See BUCK, page 7

PORTLAND SUPERWALK ADVOCATE HONOURED Parkinson Canada has announced that Pat Evans from Portland is this year's winner of the Parkinson SuperWalk National Hero Contest. The contest celebrates "everyday heroes" whose extraordinary hope fuels SuperWalk in communities across Canada. One must be nominated to be considered, and the winner is chosen from nominations from across the country. Since her diagnosis 12 years ago, Pat has met so many people with Parkinson's and their care partners who have faced their own "new reality" with courage and determination.
"I have always believed that one person can make a difference but what has kept me going are those who face many more challenges than me with such grace," she said. "They are the true heroes." Evans first became involved with the Parkinson SuperWalk in 2008, organizing the first walk in Lanark North Leeds in 2017 and raising over $31,000, a considerable amount for a first time walk in a rural area. "With the number of people with Parkinson's expected to double over the next decade, the need for support is urgent," she said. "That's why a successful SuperWalk is more important than
ever. It is also a wonderful opportunity for people, whose lives have been touched by Parkinson's, and their friends and family, to come together to celebrate their successes." Joyce Gordon, CEO Parkinson Canada said: "Pat Evans is a strong voice in our Parkinson's community. Her passion and dedication exemplify the spirit of people living with Parkinson's. Each day, they overcome so much, and live life to the fullest, no matter what. I'm pleased to honour Pat as the National Hero for Parkinson Canada SuperWalk. These champions make our work possible." The Lanark North Leeds Parkinson SuperWalk takes place on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at Conlon Farm in Perth with registration starting at 10 a.m. Visit donate.parkinson.ca/lanarknorthleeds or call Alan Muir at 1-800565-3000 ext. 3427.

to know that we have so much community support. We're very, very thankful for that. “Our best form of advertising right now has been word of mouth." Having the dollar store close to residential communities, including a seniors' retirement residence, and a high school, make this an ideal location to bring people through the mall's doors and into the store, said Bles. "We just needed something that would attract everybody," she said. And, it's working."It's getting people back into the mall," said Bles. The Buck or Two has a dual entrance, allowing patrons to enter from inside the mall or outside, leaving the store with the flexibility to stay open later or open earlier than the mall's regular opening hours.Saumure said that increasing traffic in the mall is still a big concern. The Saumure Group bought the then County Fair Mall from RioCan, saving it from demolition in 2016. Since then, they and their team, including the late Pat Wiseman, have worked to bring the centre back to life - something that is still a work in progress. Wiseman, who focused his efforts on filling the mall, passed away this June. "He was certainly the heart and soul behind the whole revamping. He worked tirelessly for a year and a half selling this place and he's done a wonderful job. Like everything he (Wiseman) did, he did it 150 per cent," Saumure said, now that the fruits of Wiseman's labour are becoming clear. A national restaurant chain also plans to set up shop at the Settlers Ridge Centre. Saumure said at this point the name of the chain couldn't be made public, but will be announced in the near future. Saumure credits the restaurant coming to town to Wiseman, who had done some leg work with the company. Wiseman also wanted to bring something like a Buck or Two to the mall to get some traction. Since the Saumure Group took over the mall, other stores have opened too, including a Telus store, The Artisan Loft, the Hawks Nest Cafe (opened by Wiseman) and the North American Trucking Academy. Other retailers, like the Remedy's RX Pharmacy, and the Food Basic have stayed. Dentistry @ Smiths Falls and the DriveTest location have stayed as well. The entire footprint of the old Target store is also being used for temporary warehousing storage. "It is our vision to bring some retail components back to that space," said Saumure of the old Target store. "Our vision now is to start from the Food Basic's end and move north toward Target." Saumure said retailers like Winners, TJ Max, and a startup company call Hart, will be approached. The Saumure Group tried to bring in a Bulk Barn but have been unsuccessful at this point. Saumure said the mall's decreased assessment from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) will only help with the revamp. "I think the mall will be very successful now because of the tax reduction," he said. The town was ordered to pay back MPAC after the mall's value was reassessed from $15 million to $1.5 million. "I feel sorry for the town, but it's completely MPAC's fault," said Saumure. A grand opening for all the stores that have come to the Settlers Ridge Centre since the Saumure Group took over is expected in late September. Part of the grand opening will be dedicated to Wiseman.

DON'T LET SEX-ED HIJACK SCHOOL DEBATE School's back, with at least some relief from the uncertainty whirling about the health and physical education curriculum. But by turning back the clock, the new provincial government is in danger of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. In a news release in late August, the government spelled out its plans for a provincewide consultation with parents in advance of implementing a new back-to-the-basics curriculum. There are both positives and negatives in the announcement co-made by Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Lisa Thompson. It's positive the government made its intentions known before the new school year began, and some of the aspects of the curriculum review are well deserving of scrutiny and debate. It's never a bad idea to consult parents (and the rest of the citizenry), but it has to be an inclusive process that guards against being hijacked by a vocal minority. It's positive that town halls are being held right across the province, but exactly what 'telephone town halls' are and how effective they will be remains to be seen. Regarding the list of topics on the government's consult list, there isn't much argument over whether or not the curriculum should be reviewed to determine if Ontario's schools are doing enough to prepare students with needed job skills. Not every student is suited to go to university. More emphasis and stature should be put on learning skilled trades and new technologies. Most people surely agree that the curriculum could do more to educate students in important life skills such as financial literacy. And the question whether to ban cellphone use in the classroom is certainly worth debating. Discussing how to improve student performance in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics makes sense, especially considering the latest results of the standardized testing released last week. In anticipation of changes, the government is making changes to the math curriculum, but the focus on "traditional formulas and memorization techniques" appears vague enough not to complicate things for teachers. Unfortunately that's not the case with the health and physical education curriculum. In a knee-jerk reaction to a few strident sex-ed objectors, teachers are being forced to revert to an out-of-date curriculum from the 1990s. The strides made in including such important topics as mental health, bullying, cyberstalking, sexting and the soon-to-be legalization of pot in the curriculum are being relegated to the back burner because of misguided concerns that discussing gender identity or making babies will scar our children. The school curriculum could do with a review. But people and the government shouldn't allow themselves to be sidetracked into focusing on the sex-ed issue. Despite attracting so much attention, it's only a small part of the equation. In fact it's not even the most important part of the health and physical education curriculum. Fill in the consultation surveys, attend the town halls and make detailed presentations if so inclined, but don't let apathy give the government an excuse to set a systemwide curriculum only a small group embraces.

WHO WE ARE
BACK TO SCHOOL PICS ARE ALWAYS A HIT NEWSPAPER ROLE IN SCHOOLS IS CHANGING, WRITES LAURIE WEIR LAURIE WEIR Column
Hey parents, grandparents, guardians, it is backto-school time. I can't wait for my social media feeds to be inundated with photos of young people doing great things in our communities. As such, I'm putting a call out to all you awesome photographers to send us your best shots. That way, we won't be pestering students and staff at the school, looking as lost or out of place as those kinders or Grade 7/9 kids. In years past, we in the
newsroom have been tasked with back-to-school assignments. There is a lot more to it these days. We need five levels of approvals (a little exaggeration, but not much), as they also go on the World Wide Web. Children's safety is paramount for all involved here so we are always mindful of getting proper approval before the photos get printed in the newspaper. We understand that you may not want your child's photo to appear in print or on line. As our industry has developed in recent years, we can't just put something in the paper these days without it also being on our websites and social pages. This is why we will be leaving a lot of school events' coverage up to the school boards communication departments, whose
personnel are inside your schools more regularly than we are, and are a lot more familiar with who can and can't be photographed. Your school board communication departments are doing bang-up jobs covering important events and milestones and they always share those stories and photos with the newspaper. We are appreciative to them for that. So as we head back to school, don't forget to snap a photo of your child as they wait for the bus, hug their dog, or display their new backpack - we'll save some space in a print edition, as long as we know they are good to be published. We will, of course, still be on hand to cover major events or profile key milestones and achievements. And we will always be wary of your children's safety when it comes to newspaper coverage. A TRIP TO REMEMBER FOR SMITHS FALLS MAN IRIS WINSTON A milestone birthday deserves to be marked in a special way. With this in mind, Michael Patti decided to take his father, Bruno, to visit his heritage in Italy to celebrate his 90th birthday. Bruno Patti, a longtime resident of Smiths Falls, and his son were both born in Montreal. However, Bruno's parents, who met in Canada, immigrated here from two different towns in Italy. As a defining marker of Bruno's upcoming 90th birthday, Michael organized a father-son trip to their paternal ancestor's hometown of Staiti, a small community of 300 in the Calabria region in southern Italy, some 500 kilometres south-east of Rome and close to the Ionian coast. Michael had not told his father that when he contacted a relative, Domenico Tuscano, who still lived in Staiti, they had arranged to make this truly a trip to remember by arranging a special cere-

Heralded by the local band and a crowd of Staiti residents, the mayor of Staiti presented Bruno with a certificate of honorary citizenship of the town where his father had been born. He was also given a print of a water-
colour painting of Staiti by 19th century artist Arthur Strutt. Following the ceremony, which included a speech from Bruno in Italian, the mayor and her husband joined the Pattis and the Tuscanos for a traditional Ital-
ian meal on the terrace of one of the local restaurants. "Both the meal and the view were beautiful," says Michael, pointing out that because the town of Staiti is located on the side of a mountain, views from every angle are spectacular. "Everything about the trip was special," says Bruno, his eyes sparkling with joy at the memory. "Michael looked after me on the way there. My cousins looked after me while we were in Staiti. I was overwhelmed by the treatment I received. I'm still not over it. It was very wonderful." Now back home in Smiths Falls, Bruno will celebrate his actual birthday on Sept. 30 and continue with his favourite pastimes, among them playing bridge at the Smiths Falls Duplicate Bridge Club. The club meets in the Royal Canadian Legion on Monday evenings and Tuesday afternoon, for more information, contact Don Grant at 613-283-7164.

LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Adrianna Foster has had heart issues since she was a young child; already had a transplant at age two. Now at age 20, she needs another one as she's been on the transplant list for more than a year. On Sept. 21, there will be a fundraising/awareness night at the Perth Civitan Club, starting at 8 p.m. A live DJ, Kevin Carnrite, along with a silent and live auction is slated for the evening's entertainment. Proceeds will be donated to Toronto Sick Kids and the Ottawa Heart Institute, Adrianna said. "On June 15, 2017, Adrianna was placed on the transplant list once again," said her best friend Brandy Varcoe who is spearheading the fundraising event. "She is stable for now, but is followed closely with weekly blood tests and trips to the Ottawa Heart Institute. Her heart is small and finding a match will be a challenge, but not impossible. Her mother never left her
side while in hospital, meaning she was off work for quite some time. She has to constantly take time off for doctors' appointments. She works part time and tries to take as many shifts as she can while still being there with Adrianna as much as possible." Adrianna said she is thankful to all those who have helped her along the way, including doctors and nurses at the Perth hospital, the heart institute and at CHEO in Ottawa. In a phone interview on Aug. 23, Adrianna said she's keeping positive, but she may not be at the event. "I have to go into the hospital to try a new heart drug," she said. "They want to monitor me and if it works, I'll have a defibrillator put in." That is to help keep her heart pumping as the drugs they're going to be using on her are pretty strong, she said. "I have a wedding I'm in Sept. 1 and I want to be there for that," she added. "But it depends on how it all goes."
Submitted/Adrianna Foster Adrianna Foster and her best friend Brandy Varcoe are enjoying each other's company in this photo. Brandy is organizing a fundraising event in her friend's honour on Sept. 21 in Perth at the Civitan Club. The fun starts at 8 p.m. Adrianna said she will probably be in hospital for a while following the wedding, but her doctor wants to send her home as soon as possible for home care. "It's always better to be at home," she said. "I hate it in the hospital. It's like a prison." Adrianna said she has had a
difficult summer trying to live through the extreme heat that has been prevalent. "I have slept a lot in the air conditioning," she said. "I have to watch my sodium/salt intake." She's on a lot of diuretics for fluid retention, which in turn, is hard on her kidneys. The young woman said she credits her family and friends with her positive attitude. Everyone, especially her father, has been so supportive, she added. "My dad (Allan Foster) is amazing for taking care of everything at home while I was hospitalized. Also my family and friends have been amazing at supporting me in any way I need." Adrianna said she may be video linked into the event on Sept. 21 via Facebook Live with Brandy. In the meantime, she's now able to help plan the event, as it's no longer a secret. "Brandy tried to keep this a secret," she said with a laugh. "But I am glad I know about it
because now I can help with planning." She's ordered black hoodies, gray T-shirts, vehicle stickers, and camo hats. Jeff's Windows and Doors off Highway 511 have the stickers and wristbands, she said. "And I'm ordering some more hoodies from Blade Sports in Carleton Place." Prodecal in Perth also has items on sale. All the swag will have the 'Adrianna's Army' logo. For the price of a $10 ticket to the Sept. 21 event, guests will be given one of these bracelets. FOUNDATION GEARS UP FOR 'A NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS'A NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com If you want to enjoy a night of 'Big Easy' living, with vibrant live music, spicy cuisine and a glimpse into your future, then you won't want to miss a Night in New Orleans. Hosted by the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation and dubbed as its new signature fundraising gala, the black tie affair is sure to please - especially those on the receiving end of proceeds raised as it will be used for new hospital equipment. "It's going to be fabulous," said Lise Smith, executive director of the hospital foundation, and organizer of this event. "We were looking to do something fun, and different. It will have a little bit of everything." Slated for Sept. 15 at Hanley Hall, cocktail hour - featuring the signature drink, 'The Hurricane' -
starts at 6:30 p.m. There will be magicians, tarot and palm reading, a showcase dance duo, and live entertainment. "You don't have to wear a mask, but we'll have some available. They will be part of the decor," Smith said, adding that people also don't have to go out and purchase 'black tie' clothing; it's casual dress - just no jeans, please. Attendees can also have some fun in a photo booth.
LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC The ambience will be set for roaming magicians who will be dazzling the guests with their mystical slight-of-hand tricks. One of them is Ottawa's Kevin Smith, known as "Mr. Smith", who is an illusionist, dazzling the mind and evoking laughter and awe from his audience. Smith got into magic after watching a coin trick up close that blew his mind. And that was only a few

He got into performing at restaurants in Ottawa unannounced after unsuccessful pitches. He was such a hit with the pa-
trons that he's been honing his talent and travelling around the world ever since. Ottawa psychics Steve and Darlaine of Orbital Talent, will offer guests tarot and palm readings for donations. An interesting twist from their repertoire is a strolling face reading. They do on-thespot and spot-on palmistry and handwriting analysis as well as give you humorous insights, not to mention, some 'OMG' moments. For dancing entertainment, TL and Chris Rader from Ottawa will show off their jazzy moves and may even get the audience to participate. These TV personalities put the 'TLC' in Latin and ballroom danc-
ing and are self-professed gypsies, workaholics and playaholics. Ed Lister and the Rising Sun Sextet, featuring vocalist MacMenzie DeMillo will delight guests with their jazzy blues. The band will start after dinner, around 8 p.m. featuring the sounds of the trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass and drums.
GOOD EATS Speaking of food, what night in New Orleans would be complete without the flavours of the south? Enjoy the spicy offerings of a low country boil, creole crab cakes, red beans and rice, jambalaya, Cajun mac 'n cheese, and cornbread. Salads of blackeyed peas, coleslaw, Cajun
potato, Louisiana sunburst will tantalize those spicy tastebuds. If Cajun is not your thing, don't be alarmed, as there will be a smoked hip of ham to satiate the palate. The best part for some may be dessert and the Catholic Women's League will not disappoint with their Southern take on the pecan pie. Each table will also have a complimentary bottle of red and white wine. Tickets are $60, and are available at the Rideau Candy Shoppe on Russell Street, the Roosteraunt at 60 Lombard St., and at the Dominion Lending Centre on Main Street. PADDLE FOR PTSD GETS SUPPORT FROM LOCAL FIRST RESPONDERS IN SMITHS FALLS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Evan Rose and Jason Godin, correctional officers at Millhaven Institution maximum security facility located just east of Bath, Ont., are paddling from Kingston to Ottawa - just over 200 kilometres - all in an effort to raise awareness and spark discussion about post-traumatic stress disorder. Rose and Godin arrived at Smiths Falls' Lower Reach Park with a large gathering of emergency services personnel, including members of the Smiths Falls Police Service, the Smiths Falls Fire Department, OPP and Lanark County paramedics on Wednesday, Aug. 29 - marking halfway in their long journey. Rose and Godin have been correctional officers with the Correctional Service of Canada for just under nine years and have know colleagues who have struggled with PTSD. "Corrections, in general, has a high rate of people suffering from PTSD," said Godin. Now, he said, people are more willing to talk about it more but there is still stigma attached to it in all law enforcement. Community service officer, Const. Aaron Tompkins, with the Smiths Falls Police Service, explained that until about three or
THE ISSUE: PADDLE FOR PTSD MAKES A STOP IN SMITHS FALLS. LOCAL IMPACT: AREA FIRST RESPONDERS SPEAK OUT ABOUT THE IMPACT POST TRAUMATIC STRESS CAN HAVE IN THEIR JOBS.
Evelyn Harford/Metroland Emergency services including the Smiths Falls Fire Department, the Smiths Falls Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police and Lanark County Paramedics came to welcome correctional officers, Evan Rose and Jason Godin, to Smiths Falls - the half-way point on their Paddle for PTSD - an over 200 km journey from Kingston to Ottawa to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder. four years ago, law enforcement hadn't focused on internal mental health concerns, making it more difficult for people suffering to get the help they needed. Now, he said, that has changed. Training, adopted by the military, is being used in police services. The Smiths Falls Police Service also debriefs after distress-
ing calls. The service also has peer-to-peer support, and checks in on their own after traumatic situations. Tompkins said that the situations those working in emergency services see on a day-to-day basis can lead to PTSD. "It isn't normal for the average person," he said. "You see some horrific things. These aren't

things regular people see. It takes its toll." Tompkins said that he knows a few people who are close to him that have been diagnosed with PTSD. Local organizations, like Project Trauma, are helping those that are suffering. "They're saving lives," he said. Tompkins' advice for people who are struggling: Get treatment early. "You have to get the help and support," he said. But despite the advancements in training and improved awareness about PTSD, including initiatives like the Paddle for PTSD, Tompkins said there is still a stigma that surrounds it. Tompkins explained that if you're coming up for a promotion you might not disclose, or your fear of not wanting to seem "crazy" may hold you back from coming forward. Regardless, Tompkins emphasized that people should reach out. "It's OK if you're suffering," he said. "It's OK to ask for help." Smiths Falls Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough said the Paddle for PTSD is important because it highlights what those in the emergency services go through and encourages people to drop the stigma surrounding PTSD. "Not everybody is as willing as others to say, I have a problem," he said. Chesebrough explained that PTSD isn't necessarily triggered by one tragic scene, but can be caused by a buildup over the
years, and triggered by a small scene. "The general public doesn't know the in-depth details of what we deal with," he said. Chesebrough, who has over 30 years of experience as a fire services professional and volunteer, knows personally that there are calls that can impact someone for life. "You see things you shouldn't really see," he said. "It can be very overwhelming." Chesebrough said the Smiths Falls Fire Department debriefs with service members after tough calls to talk through the scene and that all emergency services are now required to have peer-to-peer supports. "The days of the big, tough firefighter - those days are gone," he said. "There's nothing wrong with stepping up and saying this has bothered me." Chesebrough said that identifying PTSD can be more difficult in services with volunteer firefighters because you aren't all working together all the time different people attend different calls. His advice for folks who might be suffering in silence: Speak with a family member, speak with your doctor and speak to your employer. "Don't keep it hidden." The Paddle for PTSD is also raising money for Tema, an organization established to raise public awareness of the psychological stressors faced by our public safety and military personnel and to provide support to those struggling with PTSD. The paddle had already raised around $5000 when the paddlers arrived at their Smiths Falls stop.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY The Smiths Falls Record News visited with first responders who welcomed Paddle for PTSD to town, speaking with area emergency services personnel about how PTSD can affect them.

Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service would like to remind motorists that distracted driving is a very dangerous combination. When you are not focused on the road, things can happen fast. Using your phone to talk, text, checking maps or choosing a playlist on your hand-held device while you're behind the wheel all count as distracted driving. Simply holding your hand-held device also constitutes distracted driving. What is permitted? A handsfree device (Bluetooth) and a mounted hand-held device (secured in a mount and is not moving around while driving). Penalties for distracted driving start at $490 and three demerit points against your driver's licence. For all novice drivers: 30-day licence suspension for a first conviction, 90-day for a second conviction and cancellation of your licence and removal from the Graduated Licensing System for a third conviction. The easiest way to avoid penalties for distracted driving is NOT to use any hand-held device when you're behind the wheel.

COUNCIL
REPAIRS COMING TO SMITHS FALLS TENNIS COURTS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com The tennis courts at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre and Lower Reach Park are going to get face lifts. Council agreed to the much-needed repairs at their committee of the whole meeting on Monday,
Aug. 27. The town's community services director, Art Manhire, explained that the repairs would give at least another 10 years of life out of the courts - something Mayor Shawn Pankow called "great news." Manhire reported that currently the court surfaces are cracked and have several "bird baths" where
water accumulates, as well as offset net posts. The project, which will include repairing fence posts, removing net posts and inserts, court levelling, armour crack repair, acrylic resurfacing, two colour painting, new lines and minor fence repairs is expected to cost $102,945 $47,055 under budget.
Manhire reported that there has been a significant increase in interest in using the town's courts for both tennis and pickleball in the last couple of years. The town received one quote during the tender process for the project. Though there was only one bid submitted by Toronto Court Equipment, Man-
hire said he was satisfied. Manhire said the repairs being done to the courts should mean that repairs moving forward should be "significantly less." Coun. Lorraine Allen questioned whether the repairs would include something that could block the wind coming off the water
at the tennis courts. Manhire confirmed that there would be mechanisms installed that would help reduce the impact of wind on tennis matches. The work, which is weather dependent as some applications are temperature-sensitive, is expected to start in September.

She earned the title of the 2017 Ambassador of the Fair at Spencerville to get a berth to this highly-touted competition in Toronto. "In February of this year I travelled to Toronto for the CNE Convention at the Royal York and all the ambassadors from fairs across Ontario travel here to meet for the first time," she said. "After the busy fair weekend, I travelled to other fairs such as Carp, Metcalfe, and Navan to show the Spencerville Agricultural Society's support of the surrounding communities, and bring awareness to the ambassador program," she said. Spencerville Fair has been a place where Chloe Severson has grown a love for agriculture. The Merrickville-area 19-yearold won the ambassador competition in 2017 which propelled her to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto this month where she finished as a semifinalist in the Ambassador of the Fair competition. "This competition is focused on shaping young men and women into positive leaders in the agriculture community," Severson said, a Carleton University bachelor of commerce student. Her speech was about the importance of agriculture and knowing where your food comes from. "After presenting our speeches, they announced who would proceed to the top seven semifinalists," she said. "It was surreal to hear my name and agricultural society called out as it has been a long time since someone from our fair has made it into the top seven."
Even though Severson did not make it on to the finals, she said it took a lot of hard work and dedication to advance as far as she did. "I am so proud of myself for being able to show the community how much I love representing the Spencerville Fair and being a leader in agriculture." There were 60 competitors in the event and Severson said the most nerve wracking part of it all was ensuring she stood out from the crowd, but the most fun she had was on a midway ride. "I took a ride on the midway called the 'Sky Ride' which was like a ski lift that took you over top of the entire fair grounds. It gave me a chance to think about how many amazing opportunities I have been granted this year since becoming ambassador and how many more opportunities are headed my way," she said. Throughout her year as the Spencerville Fair Ambassador, Severson had the opportunity to get involved in her community. She attended every event she could at the fair last year, met many people, did some announc-

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL HOSTS OPEN HOUSE TO GIVE STUDENTS, PARENTS EARLY LOOK AT NEW FACILITY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Call it a trial-run for back-toschool. St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic elementary school held an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at its new location at 4 Ross St. The school combines not only the old St. Francis, which was located on the north end of town at 43 Russell St. E., but also the old St. James the Greater school, close by at 5 Catharine St. Even before teachers arrived back at school, on Saturday, Aug. 25, transport trucks arrived at the new school to begin unloading furniture. "It was like Christmas in August," said principal Susan Forbes during an interview in the school's new learning commons. "There's still lots of boxes to unpack ...(But) everything is coming together." While the school was built for 423 students, they have already surpassed that number, with 430 students enrolled. A Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) office on-site has been split in half to allow for more room for students.
Desmond Devoy/Metroland Susan Forbes, left, principal of the new St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic elementary school in Smiths Falls, and her new vice principal, Scott Renaud, pose in the new learning commons - complete with new skylight as Custodian Shane Merkley, right, steps out of St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic elementary school's dipslay case as he cleans the glass, during the open house on Wednesday, Aug. 29. "With the town booming, we have a lot of new families coming," said Forbes. There are also nine new staff members joining the school. "The highlight of a
new school is that people want to come ... We kept the same people and added on." One of the add-ons will be new vice principal Scott Re-
naud, who comes from St. Mark Catholic School in Prescott. Back in June, St. Francis and St. James teachers and staff "came together as one school

community and we did some team building." The new school will feature pedal desks, which allow students to sit atop a stationary bike with a built-on desk to allow students with special needs to cycle while they work. There are also "kneel-and-sit" desks available too, to accommodate different learning styles, as well as standup desks, and glass walls between classrooms. There are eight classes with these glass walls since there is a new "focus on collaboration between classrooms," said Forbes. There will still be individual student tables, but they can be utilized to be brought together too for more collaborative tasks at the junior kindergarten to Grade 8 school. The new learning commons will also feature a big, U-shaped sofa for students to sit comfortably on, as well as wobble stools for fidgety students, and a Lego wall where students can create off-the-wall designs (pun intended). The new school will also incorporate a 3D printer for greater creative outbursts. "We want it to be a school for the future," said Forbes. But in order to do that, "we needed the furniture and the space to do it."

With the days getting shorter, the format was scramble, and the temperature was almost as cool as our patrons. Peter Cahill, Dan Kirkham, Ian Devonshire and Scott Devonshire adjusted well to the conditions, posting the low score on the front side. PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com In 2015, ultra runner Clay Williams asked people struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders to sign his Canadian flag. He promised to carry it the full distance of his 750 kilometre run to Parliament Hill as a symbol that they don't have to carry their burdens alone. Now, having just completed its fourth year, Canal Pursuit has evolved into a relay, with many runners doing their part to raise mental health awareness along the Trent Severn Canal and Rideau Canal. Williams organized the run in memory of his two older brothers who took their own lives, and in honour of his sister, wife, and daughter, who all suffer from mood disorders. The total distance of this year's relay was 785 km, which visited 88 locks and averaged 100 km each day, broken into 10 km seg-
ments, although some runners took on more than 10 km each. The run took off from Port Severn in the morning of Aug. 18 and toured to Orillia, Bobcaygeon, Peterborough, Campbellford, Trenton, Belleville, Kingston, Jones Falls, Newboro, Smiths Falls, Merrickville, Kemptville, Nepean, and Hogs Back, to finish up at Parliament Hill on Aug. 25. The campaign began with a fundraising goal of $10,000, and by the end of it, a grand total of $11,681 was raised through 216 donations. "For four years, that brings us to nearly $47, 000," said Williams during his visit to Smiths Falls on Aug. 24. "The number of registered runners is growing every year." Fifty-four runners participated this year, up from last year's 40. For the first year of Canal Pursuit, Williams ran the entire 750 km journey on his own; about 90 km daily. For the second year,
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Smiths Falls runners Kim Schryburt-Brown (left) and Robin Hull participate in the 4th annual Canal Pursuit for mental health relay which toured through Smiths Falls, Merrickville and Kemptville on Friday, Aug. 24. Pictured here, they reach their checkpoint at the locks in Victoria Park, Smiths Falls. he ran 60 km a day for two weeks straight. "That was much more sustainable," he laughed. You might think of Williams as an experienced lifelong runner, but the reality is that he didn't start until he was 43. "I didn't like feeling winded when I got to the top of a flight of stairs," he said. "That was 2003, and I'm still winded when I go up a flight of stairs, but I recover much faster." Williams recalled a book he read called Endurance Running for Seniors that he read when he was approaching 50, which inspired him.

"It was really encouraging. No matter what age you start running, you can improve for ten years. Your rate of improvement is faster than your rate of deterioration. So, it's never too late." Williams says the run was changed to a relay because he wanted to get more people involved, and shorter running segments make the event more accessible for those who aren't used to running long distances. The purpose of Canal Pursuit is to raise awareness, encourage conversation, and raise money for the national Defeat Depression campaign.
- talk to someone who has your best interest at heart. It'll take some of the weight off your shoulders, and the other person is definitely going to be thinking about things a little differently than you think about things, and they may be able to help you in ways you never thought of." Next year, Williams is considering taking a break from running and perhaps kayaking along the canal instead. "I figure if I could kayak 50 km a day, that would take two weeks, and that would be a solo effort; I'd camp at the locks." However, he says all of the runners that participated in Canal Pursuit this year have expressed their desire to run again next year, so it may be a combined running/kayaking event.

CANAL PURSUIT FOR MENTAL HEALTH TOURS THROUGH SMITHS FALLS, MERRICKVILLE, KEMPTVILLE
"We're raising money and we're spreading a message," said Williams. "We're trying to keep conversation going. I'm finding that the more people who hear about things like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders, the more comfortable they will feel talking about it themselves; in their family, or at work, or anywhere." He added that political movement and funding often follows wherever the conversation is. When asked to choose one thing he wants everyone to know about mental health, Williams said, "If you're in a dark place, talk to somebody you trust. Uncork the bottle." His sentiment goes out especially to men. "It doesn't necessarily have to be a therapist or counsellor

gram." During the CN Exhibition (Aug. 17 to Sept. 9) Severson arrived in Toronto late Thursday, Aug. 16, and participated in various seminars all day Friday. "I reunited with many friends I made in February and got to make new connections with various seminar leaders and chaperones. On Saturday (Aug. 19) I had my interview with a panel of three judges. The interview was all about my role as a leader in agriculture and what I have done for my community while being ambassador. I felt extremely confident coming out of my interview as the judges had many questions for me and went beyond the five-minute time limit. The rest of my Saturday night was spent memorizing my speech for the following day's competition." The entire event helped Severson develop her own confidence level.
"The actual competition is only a small part of the weekend," she said. "You will listen and interact in many seminars that teach you things like leadership, networking, public speaking, and many more. It was also comforting to meet so many people like me young women from small towns trying to make a difference in agriculture. Sometimes you can feel small and insignificant when you are in what feels like a male-dominated industry. Many young women can get discouraged from taking action and being a leader. I am confident in saying that after spending a weekend with so many inspirational young women that we can overcome anything that comes our way in the agricultural industry and we can succeed." Her biggest take-away? Just be yourself. "If you are passionate about something, then make that your career. Do
not get discouraged if you think you won't fit the 'standards'. You will succeed because people will see how passionate you are, you will radiate positivity and happiness if you love what you do," she said. She recommends anyone should try the fair ambassador competition, "no matter what, age, sex, or background. For most of my life I was this shy little girl who didn't speak much and was too nervous to get out of my comfort zone. After winning the Spencerville Fair Ambassador competition, my life has completely changed. I can honestly say that I would be comfortable walking up to a complete stranger and asking them their views on leaders in agriculture or involvement in the ambassador programs. If you had asked me to do that one year ago, I would have shuddered at the thought. This program has allowed me to become confident in who I am and realize that
the opportunities for women in agriculture are possible and growing." She said her ambassador experience has been incredible and one that has changed her life. This year's competition will be taking place at the Drummond Building in Spencerville on Friday, Sept. 7. "If you have any questions at all about the program, or just how to get more involved in your local community, please reach out to me. I'm very passionate and love to talk about anything agriculture or community involvement." As for Severson's role at the Spencerville Fair, it's far from over. "On Saturday morning (Sept. 8) we will be having a float in the parade to celebrate 40 years of Spencerville Fair Ambassadors and I am so excited to ride in it, along with my mom, (Darlene Severson), Spencerville Fair Ambassador 1987." (Her dad is Randy Se-
verson.) The following weekend, she will be assisting Eric Connell, the Spencerville Fair Ambassador competition director, with the ambassador program. "I hope to continue to promote youth involvement in agriculture and be a leader for the community of Spencerville." After finishing her university degree, Severson said she hopes to enter the agriculture business industry and make an impact in business and education around agriculture. In her spare time, you'll five her in a good novel, spending time with family, or practicing with her compound bow in the backyard in preparation for hunting season. She is also a familiar face at town hall in Smiths Falls as she works as a corporate services student. "I assist many people, such as the clerk, deputy clerk, and CAO, with various reports to council," she
said. "I also help cover reception and other miscellaneous tasks." As for her future, Severson said she hopes to have a small hobby farm to provide her family with organic and healthy food options. "I did not grow up on a farm, however I was very involved the with neighbours' farm, helping with chores and hay season." At age 11, she started showing the neighbours' Hereford cows in the 4-H beef show. She has enjoyed attending local fairs such as the Merrickville and Spencerville fairs, "since I was born and that has always inspired me to be involved in agriculture in some way. I hope to see the agricultural industry become more inclusive to women and strive to educate people on how much they are dependent on agriculture for survival." The Spencerville Fair is happening Sept. 6 to 9. For more information visit www.spencervillefair.ca.

Thanks to Father Jan Kusyk of Sacred Heart Parish, Lanark for the beautiful funeral service and music that Wendy so carefully planned out. Our appreciation to her brothers, brothers in law and nephews who so lovingly took her to her place of rest and to her niece Vanessa and nephew Josh who completed Wendy’s wishes with the beautiful song ‘In the Arms of the Angels’ sung at her graveside. Special thanks to the Ladies of St. Andrews United Church for a most delicious lunch following the interment. Your wonderful kind acts have been comforting as we face the days ahead. With Wendy’s guidance and strength from above, we will carry on in her honour and loving ways. Thanks, is such a small word, but from us it is very, very large. Sincerely Steven & family ANNOUNCEMENT

Vallillee, Catherine Florence (nee Lapointe)
Catherine Florence Vallillee (nee Lapointe) passed away on August 26th at the Carleton Place Terrace. She was 96 years old. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Gerald Vallillee, great friend Walter Goodings, and siblings John, Bernard, Leonard, Wilfred and Theresa. She is mourned by her sister Frances Dagenais and her four children Jane Beall (Pat Wolfe), David (Laura- deceased), Wendy (Alan Eschke) and Derek. Grandchildren Bernardo Valero, Christopher Beall, Paul Vallillee, Nathan Vallillee and Janeva Wolfe will miss her as well as will her great grandchildren, Bernie Valero, Jr., Brian Valero, Julia Beall, Ainsley O’Loughlin, Taylum Vallillee, Logan Vallillee, Kaycee Vallillee, Daymon Vallillee, Christopher Vallillee and Natasha Fournier. Catherine grew up in Pembroke, Ontario in a Franco-Ontarian family, and spent several years of her childhood in a wheelchair with polio. After that she was always uneasy with animals as the horse pulling the milk wagon down Front Street in Pembroke sometimes attempted to rest his head on her shoulder and she was powerless to move away. Being immobile for her early childhood was also the origin of a lifelong fear of insects, especially flies that would land on her in her wheelchair. Later, Catherine attended a private high school in Montreal as there was no French school in Pembroke above grade 8. She vividly remembered arriving in Montreal on September 10th, 1939, the day war was declared. She wandered around in the general confusion and chaos of the train station and wasn’t found by her school escort until after nightfall. After high school, she worked in a munitions factory in Brownsburg, Quebec where she met her future husband, Gerald. Once he was called up, she returned with daughter Jane to her family in Pembroke. After the war, there was plenty of travel. Gerald continued with his education, completing a PhD in Classics at the University of Chicago. As a professor, and later Dean, Catherine moved with her family to Lennoxville, Ottawa, Waterloo, and Sudbury. In her role as the Dean’s wife, she enjoyed entertaining, including on one memorable occasion, welcoming the Secretary General of the United Nations, U Thant, to dinner. In 1979 Catherine went to Darwin, Australia with daughter Jane, grandson Christopher and young son Derek. Although she planned to stay only until Jane was settled, the lure of the tropics and an understanding husband allowed her to enjoy a complete year of Aussie hospitality. On her husband’s retirement, Catherine and Gerald moved to Lanark to be near family. Her youngest daughter, Wendy, owned the Lanark Era for many years. Several years after her husband’s death, Catherine met and enjoyed a close friendship with Walter Goodings until his death 9 years ago. Four years ago, Catherine moved to the Carleton Place Terrace where she lived happily until her death. She especially enjoyed her friends at her dinner table and was often seen smiling and laughing. She loved listening to CBC and reading. Just before she broke her ankle which precipitated her death, she was busy reading a biography of Rene Levesque. She will be greatly missed by friends, family and all who knew her. In remembrance of Catherine, contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society Wheels of Hope would be appreciated. Arrangements are private for the family and are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Home, Perth www.blairandson.com

ADAMS, Wayne – In loving memory of a dear husband, father and grandfather who left us one year ago, September 6, 2017. God looked around his garden, And found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you. And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough. And the hills are hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered, “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com
Facebook photo The Festival of Small Halls is back Sept. 13 to Sept. 30. Saskatchewan country musician Colter Wall will perform Sept. 14 at Joshua Bates Centre in Athens and Sept. 15 at McDonalds Corners Agricultural Hall. Juno Award-winning First Nation singer/songwriter William Prince, who will perform on opening night of the festival, Thursday, Sept. 13, is another up and coming artist. He will be joined by local opening band, Outside I'm a Giant, at the Almonte Old Town Hall for a 7:30 p.m. show. "He was signed to Glassnote Records, which is Mumford & Sons' label," Symes explained. "All we get him for is one night because he's in such demand." The festival is pleased to have Toronto native Basia Bulat back this year as well. She will appear at Merrickville United Church on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. with Off the Grid. "She was such a hit we decided we had to have her
back this year," Symes said. "There's such beautiful harmonies with a little bit of folk, jazz and pop fused in together." Symes said it's really exciting to see the lineup for the festival evolve from year to year. "We're so lucky to have all of these people jump on board and commit to playing these small halls in places some of them have never even heard of," she remarked. "They've so warmly embraced the festival." As is in the past, local opening acts have been selected to perform with the headliners at nearly all of the venues. "It's a great way to showcase local talent who might not reach these crowds otherwise," Symes said. She noted that she's thrilled to have secured opening act Kim Pollard for the Friday, Sept. 28 show with headliners Ken Whiteley and The Levy Sisters at Seeley's Bay Community Hall. "She has this powerful soulful voice and she's so passionate in her writing. It's music than can really be felt," Symes stated. Other openers to watch for are folk duo Kris and Dee, appearing with Fearing on Sept. 15. The future Over their five years, Syme said the festival has been reaching audiences farther afield, including Niagara Falls and Ajax.
With the addition of venues to the west such as Tweed and Combermere, she hopes the festival continues to grow westward. "I've been really thrilled and surprised by the number of halls that want to participate in the event and as we continue to grow toward the west, more awareness is generated for the festival," Symes explained. " ... We're also de-
veloping more of an awareness in western Ontario and southern Ontario, which gives artists an opportunity to develop a stronger following." While some shows have sold out, there are many tickets still available for the 2018 Festival of Small Halls. For complete lineup information and to purchase tickets, visit thefestivalofsmallhalls.com.

This September is the chance to see top Canadian musicians in the intimate setting of small venues across the region. The fifth annual Festival of Small Halls (FOSH) officially kicks off Sept. 13, making its way through Almonte, Chaffey's Lock, Pakenham, Tweed, Athens, McDonalds Corners, Burritts Rapids, Merrickville, Elgin and more. It concludes Sept. 30. According to FOSH general manager Kelly Symes, a total of 34 acts will unfold over the course of three weekends, and popularity in the festival keeps growing. "We're now up to four shows a night on the weekend nights," she explained. " ... Music is good for us; it's good for the soul." This year, FOSH has added roughly eight new venues to its arsenal. "We have such amazing communities that run between Ottawa and Peterborough, so we can showcase these spaces not only as tourism spots but as great places for live music," she remarked. "Ninety-five per cent of our halls from last year have all come back on board and it's become kind of a trend of sorts." Some of those spaces include the Almonte Old Town Hall, known for its acoustics, Chaffey's Lock Community Hall, the Red Brick School in Elgin and the Merrickville United Church. Attendees not only have the opportunity to discover a hidden gem in their backyard, but it's also a chance for artists to have up close and personal experiences with the crowd. "Audience members truly get a unique experience with the festival," Symes noted. " ... There's such an overall feeling of inclusion and it's awesome for community halls to support live music the way they do." " ... It shows live music is well supported in small communities," she added. The music Symes said she's "thrilled" with how this
year's FOSH lineup came together. "We were lucky to get a few bucket list artists we've wanted for a few years." Some of those artists include folk singer/songwriter Stephen Fearing, who founded Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. He will play two shows - Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with Kelly Sloan at St. Andrew's United Church in Pakenham, and Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. with Kris and Dee at Grace Hall in Sydenham. "We're really excited to have him," she said. "It's rare that you get to see such a musician up close and experience great music. He's been on our radar for a couple of years." Another exciting addition is up and coming Canadian country/blues musician, Colter Wall. The Saskatchewan born Wall released his debut album in May 2017 and since then has been drawing comparisons to legends such as Johnny Cash. "We're really lucky to get him," Symes said. "We booked him back in December of last year." Wall will also be playing two shows, the first on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Athens' Joshua Bates Centre. The next day's show on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., he will be joined by Henry Norwood at the McDonalds Corners Agricultural Hall. This appearance has sold out.

LAWS PREPARES FOR RENOVATIONS; NOT ACCEPTING GARAGE SALE ITEMS The Lanark Animal Welfare Society is preparing for renovations and have no more room for items for future garage sales for the rest of 2018. So until further notice, LAWS is not accepting items at this time. On behalf of LAWS, we wish to thank the Hinton Auto Group and the staff at Smiths Falls Ford for their fundraising barbecue and car wash. In four hours, they raised $800 for the shelter. It was greatly appreciated that the Smiths Falls Ford staff came in on their day off. Featured pets Sweet Donna is barely one year old but already raised four kittens; two of her own and two who needed a mamma. Now that they have found homes she is taking her time to enjoy herself in her foster home having fun and playing games, chasing toys and running through the tunnel. Once
Donna gains your trust she will follow you around until she get pets and praises. Donna is still in a foster home very close by our shelter. Should you be interested in meeting Donna you can call the shelter at 613-283-9308 to make arrangements to meet her. Please meet Sneakers and Scamper. Two kittens brothers of about four months old. They're both playful, affectionate, handsome and they would love to have a cat-friend to go home to. So whether they're going together, which would be great, or if they go to a loving home where they meet other resident cats, it doesn't matter as long as they're finding a home. Both kittens are available for adoption in Perth at Pet Valu. Meet Tuffy who us our temporary office cat. He is enjoying being around people and

all the comings and goings that goes on at LAWS. He only tolerates short sessions at petting and attention, but is super friendly when it's time for his wet food in the morning and evening! He is earning his keep too by catching a few mice. He
needs to go to a home where there are no children or dogs. We hope this handsome boy finds his perfect home soon. Thank you for your continued support. Follow us if you like at www.facebook.com/ lanarkanimals and/or check

ADDITION OF OVRT A GREAT OPTION FOR WALKERS, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column
trail connecting Smiths Falls to Mattawa. The trail passes through Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, Arnprior, Pembroke and Petawawa. Carleton Place already has a good trail network within its boundaries including picturesque sections bordering the Mississippi River. The most adventurous and durable people here have long had access to the Trans Canada Trail. Now the Ottawa Valley trail, running north to south, is under development. In fact portions of the trail in Carleton Place are now virtually complete, although use is being discouraged until all of the work is done. With Kathy and I now walking together every day we sometimes break away from our usual route, which covers streets on both sides of the river, and opt for walks along the now extensive and growing trail network in town. In our community at least there are lots of options and plenty of room for everyone to use the growing trail network. I encourage people to take to their heels and enjoy the available infrastructure. Good experiences await you I'm certain! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. As family, friends and regular readers know I am a dedicated walker. For nearly two decades I have taken a daily walk and now it's such a regular part of my routine that if I am unable to walk on a given day I really notice it. I enjoy walking so much that I really miss the experience if travel or other circumstances cause a break in my usual pattern. Walking has so many benefits. Not only is it good for a person's health but I find that I do some of my best thinking when I clear my head and set off on a long walk. I also meet a lot of people along the way. A good class of people I hasten to add! Because I usually follow the same route I am also able to see and follow what is happening in the heart of our community. Walking helps me keep on top of things and in the newspaper business that's a big advantage. Most recently I have a companion on my daily walks. My wife Kathleen retired a few weeks ago after 30 years working in the insurance business.
Previously she was only able to join me on weekends, holidays or occasionally after work hours. I'm really enjoying having Kathy with me every day now and we are establishing a new routine of walking earlier in the day. At the same time it is good to see that the number of good locations to walk, run, bicycle and drive all-terrain vehicles or snowmobiles (or to ski and snowshoe in winter) are increasing in this region. A couple of weeks ago I lamented the lack of passenger rail service in so many areas of the country, including Carleton Place where we live. However the two major railway corridors which were once so busy here have been, or are in the process of being, transformed into public trails. The former Canadian National (CN) line from Carleton Place to Nepean has long since been incorporated into the Trans Canada Trail. It's very busy, especially on weekends. At present the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail is under development along a nearly 300 kilometre section of what was once the Canadian Pacific (CP) rail line from Mattawa to Brockville. In 2016 Lanark and Renfrew counties, along with the Township of Papineau-Cameron purchased a 296 km section of track bed which, eventually, will be a well maintained recreation

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
