News - The rink of dreams is about to become a reality in Smiths Falls. The Gerry Lowe Memorial Foundation and the Ottawa Senators Foundation are partnering together to build a permanent outdoor rink at the corner of Elmsley and Cornelia where the old community centre arena once stood. The new 200-foot by 85-foot outdoor rink, equipped with permanent boards and overhead lighting, is scheduled to be installed this fall. “The construction process will begin in October and completed by November to be ready for winter 2014 – it’s about a fourweek build,” said Rob Garvin,
committee member on the Gerry Lowe Memorial Foundation. It’s been a long time in the planning and preparation according to Garvin. “It’s been three years we’ve worked on the rink, initially we talked about partnering with the police association and then through conversation we discovered the opportunity to partner up with the Senators Foundation and the Rink of Dreams program,” he said. According to Garvin it worked out very neatly because Gerry Lowe was a huge supporter of the Ottawa Senators. “It was a natural fit; he gave to the Senators and they wanted to give back in his name,” said Garvin. “And in all our fundraising the Senators have been ex-

ceptional supporters.” The two foundations will foot the bill and a number of businesses in town have already committed to in-kind contributions. The town will be responsible for the maintenance, and the facility will be free to use.
The location was chosen because it’s one of the few open spaces available in town, because it’s at one of the busiest intersections in town, because of its hockey history and because it’s a well lit area but also because that location will make it easier for the town to maintain the ice. “The location offers maintenance efficiency being right next to the arenas’ Zamboni (ice resurfacer),” explained Cyril Leeder, CEO of Ottawa Senators Foundation and a friend of Gerry Lowe’s. According to Leeder the facility would be a year round space that could be used for basketball, road hockey and lacrosse during spring, summer and fall. “The rink will have concrete under the ice that allows for use

with other sports, and if you approve we’ll install basketball nets as well,” Leeder told council at a presentation on Monday, Jan 27. The current proposal also includes plumbing the concrete pad and positioning the rink to allow access to necessary services with the idea that it could accommodate artificial ice in the future as well. According to Leeder the Senators Foundation would continue its involvement for a period of time to ensure good programming for the facility through the 12 months of the year. “It’s exciting that it’s not just for a couple of months but is going to be used all year round,” said Coun. Dawn Quinn, echoing the positive sentiments around the council table.
