Smiths Falls’ iconic water tower is reaching the end of its life. Town councillors were told Monday night, by Director of Public Works and Utilities, Troy Dunlop that if significant investment into its current structure isn’t made, it’ll have to be taken down. The tower, built in 1924, was only meant to last 80 to 100 years. So far, it’s been standing for over 90 years. Dunlop reported to council the tower’s ladder and handrail systems on the structure do not meet present requirements of the National Building Code and the Ontario Building Code. Current safety standards also require the construction of a rescue port base at the top of the catwalk and a second base at the centre of the tank roof. The findings come from a report filed by Landmark Municipal Services – a company that specializes in water tower maintenance – in November 2016. That report also found the lining of the water tank is considered to be in fair to poor condition and that the tank’s riveted construction leaves it vulnerable to corrosion. Though Dunlop said the situation of the water tower isn’t critical, council should start thinking about future solutions for water storage in town. Mayor Shawn Pankow said he’d rather see something new constructed rather than put Band-Aid solutions on a water tower that will inevitably have to come down. “Am I the only one who loves the water tower?” asked See WATER TOWER page SF4
