The cost to rehab the Beckwith Street bridges will cost $425,000 more than expected. Troy Dunlop, the town’s director of public works and utilities, reported to council on Monday, Feb. 26, that the Greer Galloway Group — the company working on the detailed design to be released in early 2018 — identified as part of their investigations the deterioration of the bridge’s deck, particularly over the old lock structure. The deterioration was more than was originally observed or anticipated. Dunlop said they’re not sure exactly what would have contributed to that, but not having proper waterproofing with original design and could have led to the bridges not performing as they should. Scott Poole, Greer Galloway Group senior project manager, recommended the town install a thicker slab of concrete on the bridge’s surface and replace the girders. In October 2016, council approved the rehabilitation of the Beckwith Street bridge components over the old lock, new lock and pedestrian underpass as priorities for funding under the province’s connection links program. All three bridges were built in 1973 and previously rehabbed in 2002. Poole said the design structure of the old lock was substandard by today’s assessment. “That type of construction (thin deck) just does not last,” he said. See BRIDGE page SF2
