Gym helps empower people to break the bullying cycle Stacey Roy

sroy@perfprint.ca

When those who are bullied stand up and raise their voices against this behaviour that is when real change can be made in society. That is what coach Brian Paquette of Zendragon Martial Arts Fitness & Yoga Studio believes, and is the inspiration behind an upcoming seminar on empowerment for adults. “For me, it’s an awareness thing,” he says of the session that has not been scheduled as yet. “We’re still investigating the interest level.” Paquette is currently gathering names of individuals who would be interested in this adult seminar on empowerment. Anyone who is interested can call the gym at 613-205-1100 or contact him through Facebook. He needs 20 names to run the session. Christine Brown has attended one of Paquette’s empowerment sessions and felt it had a positive impact on her outlook. “When you come out of there you’re all fired up like you can take on the world,” Brown said. Like many, Brown experienced bullying as a teenager, which severely reduced her self esteem and set her on a path of destructive relationships later in life. “That will ripple effect through your entire life,” Brown said reflecting on

her experiences. “I started making very bad decisions. I started hanging out with who I thought I deserved.” Paquette urges those he speaks with to see bullying as that domino effect through life and something that impacts those you care for. Often, he finds people won’t address bullying because they fail to see the impacts it has on those they love. “Many people are bullied throughout their life. Some of the most bullied people in the world are senior citizens,” Paquette said. In order to combat the bully in your world, Paquette encourages people to place themselves in uncomfortable situations daily to get them used to it. So they will not hesitate to do what is needed to be done to get out of bullying. “People have to learn to make themselves the instigator of the discomfort,” he said. Paquette does this in his own life by speaking in public. He has spent a lifetime as an introvert, but has learned through his business, in classes and other opportunities that he can speak in public quite well. Attending Zen Dragon classes and seminars has allowed Brown Laurie Weir/METROLAND to see that others are struggling with the same issues she is. It’s information she feels would have helped her back in The Carleton Place Jr. A Canadians had an easy time of their CCHL quarter final series against the Nepean high school. “That would have made me feel like Raiders with a four-game sweep. Pictured here is Game 3 on Sunday, which the Canadians won handily, 6-1. Connor Murphy (17) of Portland helped pace the Canadians with help from Andy Sturtz on this play. See the I’m not alone,” she said.
