Brush fire in Montague
Frozen pipes have trickle down effect
approximately a quarter-mile off the corner of Nolans and Holbrook roads. Deputy fire Chief Miles Greer told the newspaper it was “just a brush fire... it is that time of year.” Greer also mentioned that there will “probably” be a burn ban enforced this week. All members of the Montague Fire Department were on scene, including six more from Smiths Falls Fire Department. The departments are warning residents to be careful when burning, to obtain a permit, and to check if there is a burn ban in effect.

A brush fire got out of control Monday afternoon in Montague Township needing help from two local fire departments to extinguish the flames. Fire fighters from Montague were called to Nolans Road around 4 p.m. where they were met with an acre-large grass fire, according to fire Chief Ron Haskins. “(A) Gentleman of Campbell’s Farm was burning brush and it got out of control,” Haskins said. “But (it) was able to be contained quickly.” The chief said the fire was

The town’s decision to put a freeze on running taps in Smiths Falls has improved the water treatment plant’s ability to process high organics in the water. The presence of high volumes of organics in the water is a seasonal issue resulting from Parks Canada’s need to reduce the supply of river water from the Upper Rideau at this time of year. Ted Joynt, superintendent of water and wastewater services explains Smiths Falls must get its water from surrounding creeks and streams on the town side of the Poonamalie Dam when this reduction occurs, adding Parks Canada has advised this is likely to continue for another month. “It just makes the plant work a lot harder,” Joynt said. Within 24 hours of the town’s request to have residents turn their taps off (April 8), the plant was processing better. It is estimated that approximately two-thirds of the town had their taps running
(at the request of the town) to avoid frozen pipes. This brought the daily production of water to over 9 million liters (5.5 million liters is the norm). Last week’s reduction in the amount of water to be treated allows the chemicals to work better, but Joynt notes at no time was drinking water at risk. “The water plant continues to provide safe, high-quality drinking water as it has since the new water plant came on line in 2010,” Joynt wrote in an email interview. Last Wednesday, April 8, the plant did go out of compliance for a brief period of time, requiring the Spills Action Centre to be called. Joynt informed councillors that the treated water was back into balance by 9-10 p.m. that night and has remained so ever since. Frozen pipes The concern over frozen pipes continues as the frost begins to come out of the ground and public works See PIPES page SF4
