Sports - Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears Brett Costello (16) slides in front of the net Tuesday night but gets hung up by Carleton Place Canadians Dylan Gareau (23) and Craig Pefley (22) in first period action of Game 2 of their CCHL Bogart Cup final series. Canadians took a 2-0 series lead with a hard-fought 4-2 win.
Home and Living Show promises to entertain the entire family By HOWAIDA SOROUR hsorour@perfprint.ca
Community - Just as hockey season winds down, the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre will be transformed into a spring venue to host the third annual Home and Living Show opening on May 3 at 10 a.m. “There are hockey games on until April 27, then that night we’ll remove the ice, and work through the night so that on the 28th the floor will be clear for the home show to start setting up,” said Gary Bisonette, the town’s facilities superintendent. This year the home show will showcase more than 50 vendors some of them new to the event, according to Dawn Quinn, town councillor and show organizer. “We have real estate agents, home re-modelers and renovators, landscapers, banks, furnace and air

conditioning vendors, boats, antiques, pool and hot tubs, food vendors, artisans, computers it’s quite a mix,” said Quinn. This year there’s also going to be bridal show on the Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. put on by Joanna Carroll-Jones from 2 Crazy Ladies. “I’m going to start with a bridal show, and move on to special occasions prom wear, which will feature the winners of the design your own prom dress contest, and then a spring fashion show featuring some consignment, some new and outfits made by me,” said Carroll-Jones. A sit-down high tea will also be served on the Sunday afternoon alongside the bridal show. “We’ll do a kind of high tea, with watercress sandwiches, scones, jam and such,” said Tony See HOME SHOW page SF3
Community - Sometimes Plan A doesn’t quite pan out and Plan B becomes the best alternative. That’s pretty much where the Hub is focused right now. “We had to turn away from seeking full assistance from municipalities, and refocus our efforts,” said Laurie Hudson-Craig, co-chair of the Hub board. The new board has restructured the Hub’s revenue stream by introducing memberships and partnering with private and public institutions. “We’re introducing a Hub membership that gives participants the right to vote at the annual general meeting and eligibility to apply for a position on the board. It also gives participants privileged pricing on our regular programs,” said Chris Evoy, board director. The new membership program went into effect April 11. “If you purchase a membership you automatically get reduced costs on our swim programs,” explained HudsonCraig. In the meantime the Hub is posting its new schedule as of April 14 and will be offering courses throughout the month of May. The National Lifeguard Service courses will run on the first and last weekends of May and the Lifesaving Standard First Aid CPR C and AED course will run on May 10. The Lifeguard courses will be taught by Barbara Richmire who may be familiar to pool users already. “I am certified as a national lifeguard instructor and examiner,” said Richmire, who says the standards have recently changed and become much more rigorous including timed distance swims and timed rescues. The courses are designed to train participants not only to respond to emergencies but also to recognize dangerous environments or behaviours so they can prevent accidents, according to Richmire. Courses like that will continue to be offered at the Hub pool

to generate revenue and traffic. Meanwhile the Hub has managed to raise close to $23,000 last month. “And that’s just within the greater community,” said Hudson-Craig. The new board now consists of Hudson-Craig, Evoy, Kathy Merkley as treasurer/co-chair and Bonnie Parks-Sutton as director. This week has seen the Hub interviewing applicants for board membership and they’re all thrilled with the volunteer turnout. They’re also actively working on further developing the Hub’s three pillars - Recreation, Athletics and Arts. For now the pool remains the focus of recreation though a gym is still in the works; on the Athletics side the Hub has already got the Special Olympics athletes training at the pool as well as competitive swimmers from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute. “On the arts side, we do have someone coming in to help us design appropriate programs,” said Hudson-Craig. Right now the Hub is looking into before- and after-school programs but those will depend on transportation, which has yet to be firmed up. “We’re partnering with Parrot Partner for birthday packages and that should be finalized within the next two weeks,” said Hudson-Craig. They’re also putting together full-day summer camp programs in partnership with Sunny Shenanigans Puppeteer and Parrot Partner. Those plans will be finalized in the coming month so that information can be disseminated through the schools, according to Hudson-Craig. “We’ve launched partnerships with local schools to teach children how to swim, or to improve their skills, and so far we have four schools on board - St. Luke, St. James, Lombardy Public School and Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute,” continued Hudson-Craig.
