STAFF
It’s not an emergency yet, but Smiths Falls councillors do feel policing costs have to be reviewed and plan to establish a police service review task force to do just that this year. Town staff will bring back recommendations to the next committee meeting on a proposed composition of the new task force. At the April 27 committee meeting, councillors Chris Cummings and John Maloney voiced interest in sitting on the task force, while Coun. Jay Brennan encouraged sitting Police Service Board (PSB) liaisons Mayor Shawn Pankow and Cummings to take the seat. Police Chief Bob Dowdall suggested someone with police experience should also sit at the table to provide clarity. The group will look at a variety of policing models, including OPP. A young Smiths Falls man lost his life tragically after falling into the ocean off Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, last week, but his family is hoping that fundraising efforts will save other families from the same fate. James (Jamie) Quattrocchi, 25, died Wednesday, April 22, while vacationing with his girlfriend Brittany Smith and their dog, Cooper. He slipped and fell into the Atlantic Ocean after trying to capture photographs off the rocks at Peggy’s Cove. His mother, Caroline Quattrocchi told CBC her son was swept away by a giant wave while his long-time girlfriend, Brittany Smith watched helplessly. Smith said, had there been something she could have thrown to Quattrocchi, (a lifeline of some sort) it may have saved the man’s life. She suggested that if there were lifesaving devices located closer to the black rocks, along with Danger signs, it would be a more effective
deterrent. When people get down there closer to the water’s edge and see the beauty, they may forget about the danger of the waters, Quattrocchi said. Rough waters hampered RCMP divers from locating Quattrocchi’s body throughout the weekend, until they called off the search Sunday afternoon. Quattrocchi is the son of Caroline and Jim Quattrocchi – a partner in the long-serving community wholesale business, J. Quattrocchi & Co. Ltd. in Smiths Falls. Visitation will be held at Friday, May 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Blair and Son, Smiths Falls. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, with Fr. Rod McNeil officiating. A Facebook page, In Memory of Jamie Quattrocchi, has been set up to celebrate the young man’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the fundraising efforts may be made through the funeral home.
