COLLISION LEADS TO DRINKING AND DRIVING ARREST BY SMITHS FALLS POLICE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com

Evelyn Harford/Torstar Smiths Falls and Montague firefighters respond to fire call at the Gallipeau Centre in Smiths Falls on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

FIRE BREAKS OUT AT GALLIPEAU CENTRE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com A fire that broke out at the Gallipeau Centre has been contained. About 25 firefighters from the Smiths Falls Fire Department and Montague Fire Department responded to the call that came in around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1. Smiths Falls Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough said the fire originated in a non-residential unit. While fire-

fighters were battling the fire, Chesebrough said the room "flashed over" meaning it fully ignited. He said it's not known at this time exactly what caused this to happen. Chesebrough said there is smoke throughout the building, which is currently being ventilated. He said he hopes the smoke damage will be able to be contained to the part of the building where the fire broke out. Nobody was injured in

the fire. About 20 residents from residential units close by to where the fire broke out were vacated the building. Bob Hollywood, who lives in a second-storey unit near where the fire broke out, said he could smell smoke and got out. "I knew nobody was cooking breakfast," he said of the smoke's odour. Hollywood said the firefighters responded quickly to the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. The cost and full extent of the damage aren't known at this time. "Nobody got hurt, that's the main thing," said Joe Gallipeau, owner of the Gallipeau Centre.

Smiths Falls police say they were on scene investigating someone failing to remain at the scene of a collision on Beckwith Street on Monday, April 29, when they noticed the suspect vehicle drive by the scene. Police report that they stopped the vehicle and noted that the driver, who was driving for a Brewery restaurant in Ottawa, was impaired by alcohol. The driver blew twice over the legal limit. He was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, exceeding over 80 mgs, breach of a probation order and was later released on a promise to appear in court.

SMITHS FALLS MAN ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC RELATED OFFENCES Smiths Falls police investigated a domestic-related assault on Tuesday, April 23, which resulted in charges being laid against a 27-year-old Smiths Falls man. He stands charged with assault, sexual assault, assault cause bodily harm and assault with a weapon. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing to answer to these outstanding charges.

MAN WANTED FOR OUTSTANDING WARRANT On Tuesday, April 16, police investigated a breach of recognizance, when a male

could not be located by police. The police currently have a warrant outstanding for Larry Burns, 48, of no fixed address, in connection with this incident.

MAN WANTED FOR OUTSTANDING WARRANT Smiths Falls police investigated a break and enter and theft from a local store, on Friday, March 22, where numerous pieces of jewelry were taken. Police currently have a warrant out for Alexander McNaughton, 33, of Smiths Falls, in connection with this incident. The charges in these matters have not been proven in court. The Smiths Falls Police Service urge anyone with further information regarding these incidents, or similar incidents, to contact our service at 613-283-0357. and 4 p.m., and may result in some temporary minor inconveniences, such as discoloured water or loss of pressure. The town recommends people check their water for discolouration before using it to wash light coloured clothing. The town says the discoloured water, caused by harmless sediment that has been stirred up in the water mains, is safe for human consumption. This discolouration will clear up in a short period of time. The town apologizes for any inconvenience this maintenance program, which is necessary to maintain the quality of water, may cause. "There's a local connection there," said Dunlop. "They have an interest in continuing their working relationship with the town." Dunlop said that there is a possibility that, depending on how the discussions go, could mean the underground work could go ahead this year in order to utilize the nearly $1 million in grant funding the town has already received for that piece of the project through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund. Mayor Shawn Pankow, who was supportive of staff's recommendation, said the option to negotiate with the bidder presents an opportunity that the town could get the underground work done this fall.

"It's worth exploring," said Coun. Peter McKenna. "It's an opportunity I don't think that we can ignore." Council didn't make a decision on whether or not to enter into negotiations. The majority of council said they wanted to see a letter from the town's solicitor who, according to the town's chief administrative officer, Malcolm Morris, is supportive of staff's recommendation to enter into negotiations, before making any decision. However, despite not making a decision on whether or not to enter into negotiations on Monday, they did direct staff to push forward and apply for more funding to help cover the cost of the project. The town will be applying for $2.1 million in funding for Phase 1 of the Beckwith Street project through the province's Connecting Links program.

The road ahead for Beckwith Street has been full of pot holes, but recent developments may mean light at the end of the tunnel for the project. Town staff are now recommending that council accept the overbudget offer submitted by Ottawa Greenbelt Construction and enter into a 120-day bid extension with an agreement to enter into nonbinding discussions. The original bid for the first phase of the project came in at $9.5 million - well over the $5.7 million the town had budgeted. In April, it had been recommended that the bid be rejected. Troy Dunlop, the town's public works and utilities director, said the company has since indicated significant interest in coming to the table with the town for a discussion in his report delivered to council at their special committee of the whole meeting on Monday, May 6. In Greenbelt's letter to Dunlop, dated May 1, they said: "We leave all options open for discussion." The company said that discussions could include phasing of the project to match the town's funding levels. Dunlop said by agreeing to the extension it would allow the town time to look at new opportunities to move forward on the project, which could mean a reduction in the overall cost and change in schedule and/or scope. "I believe there is a willingness to bend on their part," he said. "If there wasn't I wouldn't' be making this recommendation." Ottawa Greenbelt has done work for the municipality before, including on Beckwith Street itself. They've even helped with

Capital Optical has opened up shop at the corner of Beckwith and Elmsley - their sixth location in the Ottawa area. Seeing the growth in Smiths Falls, Greg Skelton, managing partner of Capital Optical and owner of the Smiths Falls location, said the company decided they'd open up in town three years ago - the same reason why they expanded to Carleton Place eight years ago. "It's a good time to get in as the town starts growing," he said. Capital Optical already has over 100 clients in Smiths Falls, who'd previously been going to the business' Carleton Place location.

"Obviously, that gives us a good start," said Skelton. Despite the new location, Capital Optical's commitment to clients remains the same. "We're doing what we've always been doing: good quality, good customer service and good value," said Skelton. Capital Optical is always offering their 2-for-1 deal. When you purchase one complete pair of glasses you get the second pair for free. Skelton said over time, they will be fine-tuning their collection of frames in Smiths Falls. "Over the next 30 days, we're going to get an idea of what people what in this market," he said. Capital Optical supports unique lines and small independent frame manufacturers - bringing more choice to the local market. It's something that comes in handy when Skelton is helping a client find the perfect frame. "I always like to take my clients outside the box," he said. "I have a passion for

the little details; finding a frame that fits someone. You can put on a pair of glasses and it changes your whole appearance." Skelton joined the business nine years ago, after meeting his business partner Greg Grieb, president of Capital Optical, whose father, Alex Grieb, a registered optician who founded the company in 1985. Capital Optical offers eye exams, contacts, glasses, sunglasses, safety glasses, and spectral tint glasses with a specialty lens ideal for any horticultural growing environment, including cannabis production. Evelyn Harford/Torstar Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute Grade 12 student Guillaume Gégo is set to travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick to complete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair running May 15-17, 2019. & Grenville region, as part of Team Ontario, at the national fair being hosted this year by the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton from May 11 to 17, where 500 of Canada's top young scientists will showcase their real-world solutions to some of the world's most important issues. Gégo said he spent a year in his room coding, working and researching, all while wondering whether someone would see value in his work. To get the recognition regionally felt good, he said. "It was gratifying." Gégo started his project back home in Belgium. He came to Smiths Falls as an exchange student last September. With the help of computer science teacher Mason Black, Gégo learned to code and was able to create his simulation and bring his vision to life. He's the fifth of Black's students to advance to a national fair in the last 10 years. Gégo said learning to

code was essential for this project. Gégo has spent hours upon hours working on the project - watching hundreds of tutorials that helped him learn to code on his own - in addition to his regular course work. But that doesn't seem to bother him. "It's like a passion to me," he said. "It's not working." Gégo said he's trying to go into the national science fair without expectations. But admits, he hopes he wins some scholarship money at the fair. Nearly $1 million in awards, prizes and scholarships are up for grabs. "I just hope to get a scholarship," he said. "It would mean a lot. Studying abroad is really expensive." It's not just Gégo's project that's out of this world, his life goal is too. One day, Gégo said he hopes to become an astronaut and work for the European Space Agency.

Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) Grade 12 student, Guillaume Gégo, has been able to virtually simulate conditions to grow plants on the surface of Mars. It's a feat that's landed him a spot to complete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. "It's awesome," said Gégo. "My hard work paid off." The project shows in what conditions growing plants on Mars would be possible through the input of certain variables, including soil type, temperature, water, atmospheric pressure and sunlight. While his simulation shows that growing plants outside of an enclosure wouldn't be possible, it does show how it would be possible in an enclosure with human assistance. Gégo recommends that that enclosure should be buried five meters underground to protect the plants from radiation and that they should grown using grow lights. Gégo's work was recognized with multiple awards, including Best of Fair at the Rideau St. Lawrence Regional Science Fair in April. As one of the top four participants in the region, he's now advancing to the next level. "This is very cool. It's amazing to see all the hard work Guillaume has put in," said SFDCI teacher, Steve Hall, who introduced the idea of the science fair to Gégo. "It's all come to fruition. It's incredible to see. It's well deserved." At the Canada-Wide Science Fair, Gégo will represent the Lanark, Leeds

AT 10 REFERRALS PER WEEK, LANARK COUNTY HOSPICE SERVICES ARE IN DEMAND WITH GREYING POPULATION DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com As Lanark County's population gets older, calls are more frequent to the Community Home Support (CHS) Lanark County's hospice and palliative care services. "There seems to be quite a demand," said Melissa McDougall, catching a quiet moment before the start of the pancake breakfast that kicked of the 12th annual Hike for Hospice, held on Sunday, May 5 in Perth "The referrals are starting to pick up." CHS offers not only a volunteer hospice visiting service, but also peer-support bereavement pro-

THE ISSUE: INCREASING DEMAND FOR HOSPICE SERVICES LOCAL IMPACT: WITH AN AGING POPULATION IN LANARK COUNTY, MORE PEOPLE ARE TURNING TO LOCAL HOSPICE SERVICES gram, which "there seems to be a real need for," she said, as well as the weekly day hospice program. "It's good to see," she said, in that more people

are becoming aware of the program. "Until you need it, you don't know it's there." And when you or a loved one gets that terminal diagnosis, "you don't want them (clients) to feel that they are alone," even if "people may not need them right away." Client services manager Suzanne Bourbonnais agreed that demand was growing, and, by her count, there were about 10 referrals per week. "(There is) definitely demand," said Bourbonnais. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. "We know that there is even more need out there," said McDougall. Bourbonnais was quick

to add that a client does not need a doctor's referral to access their services, though "it takes time to make the match ...(and) there are times when we have a wait list." Families, friends, or even neighbours can make referrals, she said. One of their outstanding problems is that they do not have enough volunteers, in part because some clients require the help of multiple volunteers. "It takes a whole team," said Bourbonnais.

TAKE A TOLL Working with hospice patients means that there will inevitably be losses. Sometimes, "you only have two or three weeks with a client," said McDougall. But, "some we've followed

for years ... Yes, we do grow attached." While the client is at the centre of the care, "we want to be able to support the families. “We've been to our fair share of funerals," both to say goodbye to the client, and to be there for the family, said McDougall. Another way they care for families is by "sitting with a client so other family members can take a break," said McDougall. Volunteers can also help with baking or assist with a "scary" appointment.

Mary Ann Nicholson helped found the hospice back in the last century, December of 1999. "We could not do this without the volunteers," she said, getting ready to walk the walk. "The health care system would cost a whole lot more," were it not for volunteers, Nicholson said. Later that morning, the two-kilometre walk left from the Perth Royal Canadian Legion, to raise funds for hospice palliative care services in and around Lanark County. The walk raised funds not only for Community Home Support Lanark County, but also the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation and the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation too.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

On Sunday, May 5, the 12th annual Hike for Hospice started its 2 km jaunt at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion. With another hospice hike in Almonte that same day, and plans for another possible hospice in Smiths Falls, hospice care and services are front of mind for many families with aging loved ones.

The account has nearly 94,000 followers, which has allowed him to monetize it by selling ads. He currently sells ads for anything from basketballs to headsets, generating about $2,000 in annual sales. Lucas starts his day at 5 a.m. to update the account, reviewing all NBA games from the previous night. He reviews player stats, searching for anomalies to create interesting posts. On any given morning, he may share his playoff predictions or detail top performers from the previous night, generating discussion by stating who he thought played the best. He even searches for interesting facts from NBA history to include in his posts. An avid Instagramer and basketball fanatic, he

started the account two years ago to combine his passions. "I started following the NBA and after listening to commentators I wanted to talk about the NBA, too, so I just started talking about it," he explained. "What I really love is observing statistics, and taking what I see and love and creating interesting content." The Grade 12 student has a talent for social media marketing and an understanding of how to garner interest online, and those skills have been further developed through course work and help from staff at Rideau DHS. He explains how his Grade 10 photography course has helped boost his photo-editing skills, and how he's sought advice on how to enhance

the flow of his posts from English teachers. An entrepreneurship course taught him about effective marketing visuals, and a data management course has helped enhanced his analytical skills, which has helped him to dig deeper and make connections with NBA statistics. There will be a void in Murphy Park and the Victoria Basin this summer. Niknaks Paddle Shack has announced on Tuesday, April 30, that they'll be closed for the summer 2019 season. "We thank all our patrons and friends for their support over the past two seasons," read the company's posting on social media Tuesday (April 30). The seasonal kayak, canoe, stand-up paddleboard and bike rental service, run by the Thomson family, opened at the Murphy Park building at Victoria Basin in 2017. RAISE HELL IF RESTRUCTURING CRIPPLES RURAL SERVICES The devil is in the details. And many of the details could be devilishly devastating to rural areas in the province. The provincial budget brought down April 11 included a few shocks but nothing too unexpected from a government elected to put Ontario's finances on a solid footing. However, some of the more vague statements turn out to be not so benign. Since budget day, Ontarians have been reeling from new revelations almost every day about another important service being diminished or restructured. Word trickled out the number of health units would be reduced from 35 to 10 with their budgets slashed by almost a third, followed by confirmation 52 ambulance services would be melded into 10. There are also new details about cuts to teachers' jobs, library support services, legal aid and conservation authorities. However, there are still plenty of unknowns about how the cuts will be rolled out and what the effect will be on those relying on the services. Proposed centralization of the paramedic service justifiably makes folks nervous. For the last few years, rural politicians around Ottawa have been speaking out as their ambulances are ordered into the city to try to compensate for shortages there, leaving country folks vulnerable. If ambulance services in Lanark counties are rolled into one Ottawa-centric service, will rural representatives still be able to forcefully advocate for their residents or will their voices become a minority and be lost in the shuffle (as happened with the Local Health Integration Networks)? Questions could be asked of the proposed centralization of health units. Rural and urban priorities often clash when it comes to issues health units deal with, as what may be acceptable in the city might be viewed as an invasion of rights to country folks. Integration can work if changes result in cost-savings, efficiencies and effective governance taking into account both urban and rural needs. If all it causes is turmoil, rancour and a loss of rural programs and rights, then the approach will fail. And too often in the past, such centralization initiatives faltered because rural services and property taxpayers were disadvantaged or ignored. So in the next few months when the provincial government starts implementing the details of its restructuring of paramedic services and health units, as well as in other areas, it's important local representatives are genuinely consulted. And it's critical the public support and push them to forcefully defend programs such as community paramedicine and ensure governance includes adequate rural representation. When the devil in the details becomes apparent, it's important both municipal and county officials, along with our rural MPPs, stand up for our programs and rights, even if they have to play the devil's advocate. If not, there will be the devil to pay.

SMITHS FALLS JR. A BEARS ANNOUNCE ROB DOPSON IS NEW BENCH BOSS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Rob Dopson has a new job behind the Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears' hockey bench. The former assistant coach with the CCHL team is now the head coach. "I'm honoured to get the chance. I've been pretty fortunate to work with the organization for a number of years and work with some great people," Dopson said on May 2, the day after he told all his players about the transition which he said went well. "Being from town, it's always been a dream of mine to coach this team. It's a positive thing for me." He said he hopes he can fill all the expectations of not only the town, but the team and himself. Last season, brothers Nicholas and Joshua Filoso purchased the Smiths

Falls Bears and the Westport Rideaus tier 2 team from Chris Cassell of Smiths Falls. Dopson said it was a great year under new ownership. "It was very positive," Dopson said. "I was very fortunate that Chris Cassell and his family, Mark Grady (former head coach) and Walt Dubas (former associate coach) allowed me to stick around and be part of the team. Certainly with the new ownership there is a bit of uneasiness as to whether or not you're going to stay. They've been wonderful to me. They're getting their feet wet. I think last year was a positive step for the team and the direction under the new ownership for the group." Dopson said he's looking forward to building on the positivity of last year, and driving the team

in the right direction. The first thing he needs to do, though, is find an assistant coach. "There are a number of people," he said. "That's part of the process. Right now it's just letting the dust settle on what's going on. We're still looking for people to round out the hockey operations of the team. Dopson said junior hockey is interesting. "You don't have kids committed until they walk through the doors in August. But it was positive, very well received," he said when talking to his players. "I have a good relationship with Alex Armstrong (former head coach), and I wish him nothing but the best in his new endeavours. He's been a very good friend to me, I learned a lot under him and I hope we can continue to build on what happened last year."

Laurie Weir/Torstar Rob Dopson is the new head coach of the Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears. There was a recruitment camp a couple weeks ago, Dopson said, and now part of his new assignment is to reach out to those young players "we sort of committed to and what the

expectation is going into the season." Dopson said he feels they have a good core. "We have a good nucleus of vets, and we just need to complement that to look

We’ve got a newsletter for that.

for good people to continue to fill the spots that have been vacated from kids that chose not to come back," he said. "Some kids have graduated; we've had a couple kids who chose to go back to school which I admire. So that's all positive. That's our job ... to get kids prepared to where they want to go. I feel we've got a great nucleus of kids, and we've got some great kids coming up. It's all good." The Bears finished third in the Robinson Division last season, and sixth overall. They faced off against the Brockville Braves in the first round of playoffs, losing four games to one. The Ottawa Jr. Senators won their second Bogart Cup against the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians. They are now playing for the Fred Page Cup in Nova Scotia.

Kristine MacLaren's spirit lives on at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI). Echoes of her voice are still present in the music room that the longtime high school teacher once filled with song and joy before her death last summer. MacLaren, a music and arts teacher for more than two decades, died at the age of 46 in July 2018 after a battle with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer originating from smooth muscle, which lasted just over a year. "She was a pretty awesome lady and we miss her a lot," said Kristen Drouin, friend and colleague of the late MacLaren.

"She had a massive impact on our school and staff. It was important for us to recognize her contribution to our school and community." So, that's why SFDCI has decided to dedicate the school's music room in MacLaren's honour. The plaque will be located in the school's cafetorium, right beside the main door. Music was in MacLaren's blood. She was also founding member and the musical director of the Carleton Place Town Singers and a dedicated mem-

ber of the theatre group Mississippi Mudds. "She was always singing and playing the piano," said Drouin. Students at SFDCI spoke of MacLaren always making the music room a safe place for students to express themselves. She always had an open door and time to listen to the concerns of her students, whether schoolrelated or not. The plaque dedication night will be filled with music and celebration, all in MacLaren's honour, at SFDCI on Thursday, May 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments from the hospitality class will be served. Drouin is putting together a movie highlighting MacLaren's impact on the school and community. If you have any photos you'd like to submit, email them to kristen.drouin@ucdsb.on.ca.

sisters are Métis from Labrador). In the middle of it all was her sister, a blackand-white photo in a frame hung on the tree. The red dresses were hung by Michael from the tree as part of a wider national red dress campaign. It is her hope that the campaign might even be able to "bring one girl home" by making people "open their eyes" to the issue, she said. Francine Desjardins, leading the Lanark Drum Circle, welcomed the participants to the ceremony to "honour those women who were stolen, went missing, or were murdered," she said. "We have to bring this into the light

...(to) make everybody aware that this is ongoing." Desjardins encouraged everyone to "take care of each other," and to teach the next generation to "be strong, but be respectful of each other. Things can change. I hope that they will." The drum circle performed songs, one of which was composed by Indigenous prisoners at a female penitentiary in Kingston. (There had been a smudging ceremony earlier in the afternoon at the evergreen tree on the other side of the Rileys' front yard.) Riley said that she started the Smiths Falls component of the red dress project last year, which "collects red dresses from the

community and hangs them in public spaces as a visual reminder of the women and girls who are no longer present. An empty garment of clothing is a marker of those who are no longer with us. We want Canadians to never forget the lost lives." Those who become aware of the project "are often shocked that it is such a widespread issue in Canada," said Riley. The dresses were symbolically a way of "calling the spirits of these women and girls and allowing us to use our voices to speak for them," she said. It was "a chance to call them back to be among us." She commended Trinity United Church for taking part in the project," since "the image of a red dress blowing in the wind can speak to a lot of people." Riley added, as the dresses continued to flutter silently in the breeze that "their lives matter."

Maloney added that the record attempt is sanctioned by Guinness, and costs about $10,000 to get an official to attend the event to see if it measures up, and beats the current record. He thanked the Pace Law Firm for making some of the funding possible to

stage the record event, as well as the Fallen Riders Support Team. There will also be a 145 kilometre, twohour motorcycle run that day to raise money for Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program. The free event will also see camping available at the Railway Museum, and there will also be a motorcycle show n' shine that day too, along with train rides,

PERTH'S IAN MILLAR RETIRES FROM EQUESTRIAN RING Ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar has announced his retirement from international showjumping competition after nearly five decades at the top level. One of the most successful show-jumping riders of all time, Millar is stepping away from the international level to refocus his efforts on coaching and developing young horses. Millar has represented Canada in more than 200 Nations Cup team competitions, including appearances in 10 Olympic Games, 10 Pan American Games, and seven World Championships. Millar's 10 Olympic appearances is a world record for any athlete across all sports. He won his first Olympic medal, a team silver, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has 10 Pan American Games medals, including two individual and two team golds. "Representing Canada many times over my career has been my greatest honour," he said. "Each time I wore the red team jacket was very special to me, and the fact that I was able to share this experience with

so many great riders is a testament to the quality of horsemen and horsewomen here in our country." In addition to his efforts representing Canada internationally, Millar has won over 150 Grand Prix competitions over the course of his illustrious career, including winning the prestigious international Grand Prix three times at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament in Calgary. He is a 12-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion and was the first rider to win back-to-back World Cup Finals, earning the title in 1988 and 1989. His most successful horse, Big Ben, was a household name throughout Canada in the late 1980s and 1990s and was a favourite to win everywhere he competed. Millar built his home stable, Millar Brooke Farm, into a powerhouse training ground for international show jumping. He has also been instrumental in the successful careers of his son Jonathon, daughter Amy and daughter-in-law Kelly, all of whom currently represent their country in international competi-

tion. Today, Millar operates Millar Brooke Farm alongside his children and focuses on producing top show-jumping horses and riders for competition. In recognition of his many successes, Millar has received numerous awards, including being named a member of the Order of Canada. He has been inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, and the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. Although Millar is stepping back from international competition, he plans to be busier than ever working with up-and-coming athletes and horses. "It has been the journey of a lifetime, with so many dreams realized, so much due to the fantastic horses I was blessed to ride, to whom I am eternally grateful," said Millar. He thanked all those who made the past 10 years such a success, including his late wife, Lynn, his biggest contributer, "with whom I shared my most cherished bond. Through our partnership, we achieved incredible success."

The face of the maple syrup industry is changing, and not just with the diversification of its products. Where a few years ago, the farm outside of Westport would have had more than 1,500 buckets hanging off of trees on the property, there are now pipelines all over the property at syrup time. Because of this setup, "I can do in an hour what used to take four men hours (to do)," he said. The pipelines are also "a lot more sanitary than the buckets." This year's maple season was short but sweet. "It was a slow start and a quick finish," Millar said. "We ended up with more sugar than we had last year."

There's sweet and sour and then there's sweet and slightly bitter. The latter was most decidedly the taste of Little Rideau Farms' maple syrup vinegar, which was on sale at a modest booth of the Settlers' Ridge Centre in Smiths Fall on Saturday, May 4 during the Home and Living Show. Set in the middle of a humble card table, being sold out of the back of John Millar's minivan, the bottle looks like a regular, lighter type of maple syrup. But don't go pouring this on your pancakes, unless you like the sudden, tart sting of vinegar - a chicken dinner or salad dressing might be a better use for it. "I use it all the time myself," said Millar, pouring a shot glass full of the stuff, and cautioning this reporter not to knock it back, but rather sip it. His advice was indeed wise. If one looks at the back of the label of most store-bought salad dressings, "you can't even pronounce most of the names," said Millar, who works for the farm's owner, Matthew Chaikowsky. And this type of maple syrup vinegar, "is about as organic as it gets."

BAD MARGUERITE'S SPRING GIFT TO TEACHER BACKFIRES FLOWERS HAD MISS CROSBY SNEEZING LOUDLY, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Bad Marguerite was at it again, always trying to get on the good side of Miss Crosby. Often her actions didn't work out though. There was the time my brother Emerson stole the homemade doughnut she brought the teacher. Marguerite made the mistake of leaving it on her own desk at morning recess, meaning to give it to Miss Crosby when we were having our lunch. Everyone could see her, and that's what Marguerite liked ... lots of attention. Well,

when Emerson was walking past Marguerite's desk, he crammed the whole thing into his mouth, and it was gone before he reached the back door! Of course, he did it so sneakily Marguerite didn't know who to blame, but she blamed Rocky, who was known to latch onto things that didn't belong to him. But Rocky had no idea what she was talking about. Well, here she was again. On a sunny and warm early spring day in May, she arrived at school just before Miss Crosby appeared on the step to ring the big brass bell. Marguerite had in her hand something wrapped in wax paper, and she had no inten-

tion of telling us what it was, but when we went into the school, she went right up to the teacher's desk, and plopped it right down on top of the attendance book. She didn't want Miss Crosby to miss it. Just before we took our seats, Marguerite jabbed her finger in the general direction of the parcel, and the teacher had no choice but to unwrap it. It was a bunch of daffodils and what looked like weeds to me, and some green leaves. Then the fun began. Miss Crosby threw back her head and let go with a sneeze that could be heard over in Admaston! Several more loud sneezes followed, and Miss Crosby quickly moved over to the window where the pencil sharpener was anchored, threw open a window, and set right in to morning

LANARK COUNTY TEEN STARS IN FEATURE FILM nothing else they could do." "However, Joyce prayed over the body, and John's heart eventually started beating again," she said. The Smith family's journey is the subject of Joyce's novel: The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother's Faith and Her Child's Resurrection. According to Maddy, John was able to walk out of the hospital 15 days after his accident, with no side effects. Directed by Roxann Dawson, Breakthrough is the first film from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by The Walt Disney Company. The media conglomerate acquired 20th Century Fox through its merger with 21st Century Fox, which transpired in March. In addition to Maddy and Metz, other Breakthrough cast members include Marcel Ruiz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter and Dennis Haysbert, just to name a few. The premiere was a huge affair for the Martin family, with Maddy joined by her mother Kate, father Daryl and sister Kirra. "We went a day in advance, hitting up Universal Studios Hollywood, which

Maddy, a 17-year-old student at Notre Dame Catholic High School, plays Abby Sutterer in the Hollywood film, which stars Chrissy Metz of This Is Us, a popular TV series. The movie's premiere took place at the Fox Village Theatre in Westwood, a historic neighbourhood in Los Angeles, on April 11. Breakthrough, which hit theatres on April 17, is based on the real-life story of John Smith, a teenager who in 2015 fell through the ice on a lake in St. Louis, MI. John was underwater for 15 minutes before he was pulled out. "He was dead for 45 minutes, with doctors basically telling his adoptive mother, Joyce Smith (played by Metz), to say goodbye," Maddy explained. "There was

Was the red carpet experience everything Maddy thought it would be? "It was intimidating ...

there was one moment when I saw actor Terry Crews across the red carpet, which is when it hit me this is crazy," Maddy explained.

BIT BY THE ACTING BUG The Smith family moved to Carleton Place from Burlington in 2010. Soon after, Maddy's grandmother took her to a performance by the Mississippi Mudds. "I fell in love," she said. Maddy joined the Mudds, performing in several shows, and she still volunteers with the local theatre troupe on a regular basis. Five years ago, Maddy signed with Angie's AMTI in Ottawa. Currently, she is with Play Management Inc. in Toronto. "With me going to Ryerson University to study business this fall, I needed something based in the city," she said.

Crews is one of the stars of the TV sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and he is currently set to host the upcoming season of America's Got Talent. Breakthrough was shot in Winnipeg last spring. Kate accompanied her daughter. "This is such a beautiful story ... emotional to watch, and I was honoured to be a part of it," Maddy said. In regards to Metz, the teenager stated, "She is just as sweet as you think she would be ... I cannot say enough good things about her." This isn't Maddy's first screen role. She appeared in the TV movie Killer Mom, playing the role of Allison Timmons; as well as TV series' Taken and 21 Thunder; a part in the movie Tell the World; commercials and more. "I was actually in Montreal on the set of the TV series Fatal Vows when I got a phone call about getting the part in Breakthrough," Maddy noted. "I was ecstatic!" In her spare time, Maddy likes hanging out with her friends. "They are a handful, but

What is the teenager's dream role? "Something in Brooklyn Nine-Nine ... I could be a hotdog vendor and I would be happy," Maddy said. "It is my favourite show." Maddy's next role is in Notre Dame's production of Legally Blonde, running May 15-17. She plays the lead: Elle Woods.

He was the cherished uncle to Kathy Ann (Dave) Hughes of Brampton. Joe resided with Kathy Ann and Dave for many years. He was the beloved brother of Lorraine (late Donald) Cooper of Sudbury and Michael Noonan of Mallorytown. CREIGHTON, Delephine God’s Garden God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. And the He looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “Peace be thine”.

the door. I have yet to visit when there aren't at least two patrons in line, which shows you just how popular this place has become. I was immediately greeted with a smile by owner Thomas Lavasni and his employees. They are always so friendly and other restaurants should look to them as an example. I didn't really have to look over the menu too closely; I usually switch between the chicken shawarma sandwich (they come in both small and large) and the chicken platter. I opted for the platter this time, which comes with generous helpings of rice, seasoned potatoes with dollops of an addictive garlic spread, pickles, picked turnips, your choice of a Greek or garden salad,

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
