News - At the regular Smiths Falls committee-of-the-whole meeting held Monday, May 12, and chaired by Coun. Dawn Quinn, the Smiths Falls and District Youth Centre found out they would not be finding a home at the Youth Arena. “We had a request from the Youth Centre to use the Youth Arena as a new home. We received a report last week from Margo Loughren (administrative assistant) and Gary Bisonette (facilities superintendent) regarding the proposal,” said Coun. Shawn Pankow. The upshot is that allowing the Youth Centre to use the upstairs hall at the Youth Arena would disrupt too many other events and activities that are hosted in that hall and leave a number of groups with nowhere else to go. “The hall is used quite regularly, they host about four birthdays a month, six to eight figure skating events, hockey camps and tournaments and it’s a backup for the Memorial Centre, for example we had to move the Volunteer Night awards to the youth arena Photo by HOWAIDA SOROUR hall because of a hockey game,” Events – Fight Night was a hit Saturday night as the Honky Tonk Man visited the Smiths Falls said Pankow. director of the Youth Centre was discouraged by the news but encouraged by some of the councillors’ comments and clear support. “I’m disappointed, although I respect what I heard – all I heard was why we couldn’t use the youth arena, I didn’t hear any positives on what would happen if we did,” said Gariepy. The notion of providing a municipal space for the youth group remains contentious among councillors. “I don’t support providing the Youth Centre with municipal space, because then we’d be creating a dependent entity. I think they need to search for property that isn’t community owned,” said Coun. Ken Graham whose view was shared by Coun. Jay Brennan. On the other hand the rest of the councillors, though they all agreed that the youth arena might not be the best solution, were quite open to either finding a town-owned facility for the youth or even, when funds permit, to build one along the lines of the seniors’ recreational centre. “I don’t think that going to the youth arena hall would be appropriate at all but I disagree with See YOUTH page SF2

Healthy Living Festival to feature new ball hockey event News - The planning of the 2014 Healthy Living Festival is moving into high gear, with lots of new and exciting activities to help people get their move on! The festival planning committee has been hard at work finalizing plans for the upcoming event, including creating a brand new component to the festival – the Zendragon 3 on 3 Ball Hockey Tournament. The ball hockey tournament is open to teams of four and up (including a goalie), with several different age categories to ensure no one is left out of this exciting event. With lots of prizes up for grabs, players won’t be disappointed. The tour-

nament begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m., when the festival ends. The cost is $80 per team, with no more than six players to a team. This event will be a joint fundraiser for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, as well as the 2015 Healthy Living Festival. Once again, the festival will feature a Cardio Move-a-Thon event, this year running from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. with lots of great instructors who are pumped at keeping people engaged and moving for a full 90 minutes during the event. As with the ball hockey tournament, the Cardio Move-a-Thon will also be a fundraiser for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program is a nationally registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across Canada have the opportunity to get off the sidelines and into the game. All funds raised for Jumpstart stay within the community where they’re raised, which means the Move-a-Thon and ball hockey tournament are two great ways to help give area kids a chance at participating in sports. In addition to the Move-a-Thon and ball hockey tournament, the festival will also see the return of the rock climbing wall, bouncy castles, obstacle course, and this year will also include a children’s
