The terrain has been walked and plans are in place to begin construction of the 16 obstacles that will make up Smiths Falls’ first Rise Above the Mud obstacle race. The first-time event is scheduled for Sept. 19 on Poonamalie Road, and has received a strong initial interest since opening the online registration this

A lengthy and passionate discussion over who should guide the police service review took place at the committee level last Tuesday evening. The only unanimous decision by council members that night was to direct staff to make a formal request for OPP costing. It is understood that this process is under a moratorium at the moment until the OPP formula is settled, but all councillors felt it was important to get on the waiting list. “It would only be the right thing to do,” said Coun. Councillors Jay Brennan and Chris Cummings supported police Chief Bob Dowdall’s suggestion for the town’s existing Police Services Board to take over this work, noting the PSB is an arms length organization that is charged with working with the Smiths Falls Police to manage the existing service and its $4.8 million budget. “Why don’t we just let them do their work and they’ll build the police force we want,” Cummings said. Both Brennan and Dowdall asked the council to defer the police service review until the OPP Costing process is re-
