EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Karen Hallinan has been named Smiths Falls' 2018 Citizen of the Year. "I am extremely honoured," said a very surprised Hallinan as she accepted the honour. "I feel that there's probably a lot of people in this room that deserve it more than I do because there's lots of people that do lots of things. I'm certainly joining a very esteemed group of people." This year's Citizen of the Year banquet was hosted by the Smiths Falls Kinsmen Club at the Smiths Falls Golf & Country Club on Monday, May 27. The annual award was started by Mayor T.O. Ashwell in 1969. It's been held annually ever since. The honour is given to a person within the community whose contribution to the town through volunteer efforts that have had a positive impact on fellow citizens. Hallinan is a perfect example See HALLINAN, page 2

of this. "It's quite shocking that this unsung hero has not been previously recognized," said Mayor Shawn Pankow. "Perhaps it's because (Hallinan's) work has been completed out of the limelight and behind the scenes." Hallinan received 10 letters of nomination - including letters from two Smiths Falls police chiefs and two local priests. A treasure to the people of Smiths Falls, Hallinan has worked hard for various causes throughout her life. Her volunteer resume is broad and extensive. As an educator, she has helped shape the minds and hearts of many people in the community. Over the years, long hours have been poured into many organizations and causes important to her. Hallinan has served var-

ious roles within the Smiths Falls Community Theatre. She helped organize the 2014 Travelers Tankard (the men's provincial curling championship), has volunteered with the St. James/St. Francis breakfast program, served on the Heritage House Museum advisory board, the Municipal Heritage Committee and the Friends of the Library committee. As a woman of strong and active faith, she is involved at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. For the last 26 years, she's been an active member of the Catholic Women's League. Since 2004, Karen has served the town as a member of the Smiths Falls Police Service Board as both vice chair and chair - a role she currently fills. Hallinan has had a longstanding involvement with Special Olympics. It was Hallinan's son Jeffrey who

led her and her late husband Jim to their commitment to Special Olympics and assisting people with both physical and intellectual disabilities. Over the years, Karen has been involved with the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run and the annual police golf tournament and street toll, which benefits local Special Olympics athletes. Despite Jeffrey's passing in 2016, Hallinan continues to be involved with the organization. Hallinan said that she owes a lot of gratitude to her 94-year-old mother, who was in the audience, as well as her late father, who instilled the values of giving back in her. "They raised me to understand that if you live in a community, you have to give to that community," she said. "I get back a lot more than what I put into it."

PADDLEFEST MAKES WAVES IN SMITHS FALLS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Paddlefest continues to make waves in Smiths Falls. Peter Au, president of the Rideau Roundtable the organization that puts on Paddlefest each year reported that the annual event, now in its fifth year, has been drawing people from further afield includ-

ing Peterborough and Brockville. He said that this year's Paddlefest hosted on Saturday, June 1, brought out more people than last year. Andrea Howard, interpreter and big canoe leader with the nonprofit Rideau Roundtable, said that Paddlefest provides a chance for the organization to educate the public about the watershed, while drawing

people in with an exciting athletic event. Each year, a voyager canoe race is held. "We hope to turn people on to paddling and get people on to the canoe - the most perfect water vehicle invented," she said. This year, Wills' Warriors came out victorious over the Town of Smiths Falls' team, the Reach Combers, in the final 200metre race.

COLOUR RUN SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON MENTAL WELLNESS

LARGE ENOUGH TO SAVE YOU MONEY SMALL ENOUGH TO SAVE YOU TIME

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com With more awareness about mental wellness, as well as local resources and community services promoting well-being, created through events like the annual paint powder run/jog/ walk for mental well-being, more people are coming forward with mental health concerns. Roslyn Craig, 15, a Grade 9 Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) student in the high school's Change our World Club, the organization that put on the fifth annual powder run on Sunday, June 2, said at school she's seen instances where you can tell other students are experiencing periods of mental distress. "You can tell people are going through something," she said. Craig said younger people seem to be increasingly having more mental health concerns, probably because of the use of social media platforms that make cyber bullying easier. "They get really down," she said of people who get bullied online. Craig said that events like the powder run help to make people more comfortable to talk about things something that's needed. Julie Ingleby, a public health nurse with the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit, who is the health unit representative on the Change our World Club, said more youth are seeking help and are asking for it at younger ages. Ingleby works in local schools to help prevent youth from reaching a crisis point by providing coping strategies such as eating well and getting physically active. "Kids just don't have the skills to be able to cope with stress," she said. Ingleby said that stress and anxiety are the biggest issues facing students. But the capacity of local services isn't enough, Ingleby said. "Our agencies are wonderful," she said. "They just can't meet the demand." He also highlighted that the lack of affordable housing in the region is a big barrier for people to get help and make their lives more stable. ARCHBISHOP EMERITUS BLESSES NEW ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL IN SMITHS FALLS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com With a flick of the wrist, holy water flew through the air, landing on students, teachers, and desks all over St. Francis de Sales Catholic School. Walking from classroom to classroom, dressed in purple and white robes respectively, Brendan O'Brien, the archbishop emeritus of Kingston, and Fr. Rod McNeil, dipped golden rods into a chalice bearing holy water, and prayerfully sprinkled each classroom and office with water, during a school blessing on Tuesday, May 28. Before the walk of blessings, O'Brien's homily began with a rhetorical question: "What are we doing when we bless a school?" he asked. "To bless is to bless God, or thank God for this new facility," O'Brien said, explaining that to bless something

can be "an expression of gratitude and praise." But a blessing can also mean "to dedicate, to dedicate this facility in the service of Catholic education," an education system unlike more secular ones "from which faith is cut off from life." The blessing was also necessary for the school's staff and students. STUDENT REVIEW The new St. Francis de Sales site on Ross Street began service last year, when the old St. Francis, located on Elmsley Street North, merged with St. James the Greater Catholic School on Catharine Street. The old St. Francis did not have any grass on its playground - only asphalt and concrete. For old St. Francis students who transferred south of the river, the new grass is most welcome. "My favourite thing about the new school is that we have grass, the glass walls, our big yard, and that we

"I think we're all happy we got grass. Having no grass is no fun at all, especially when falling on the pavement." The grass is part of the new school's bigger yards,

which Crowder finds to be "helpful because if you are upset and don't want anyone near you, there is usually a place to go ... It has lots of space to run and play." The school boasts "glass walls" which divide some classrooms, giving them multiple purposes.

"The glass walls are amazing to have," said Crowder. "During lunch we open it so that our supervisor can watch both rooms at the same time." Crowder concluded that "I've only been here a year and I already think that the new school is awesome." There were positive reviews from students in younger grades too. "I love the new school," said Grade 2 student Grace Ritchie. "It has a really big yard that you can move around (in). It has lots of places you can make forts in the bushes." Ritchie acted in the recent school production of Suessical the Musical, and even had her first Holy Communion earlier this year. "It is a great school to come to every day," Ritchie concluded. BOARD OFFICE John Cameron, director of education for the CDSBEO, commended the work done

by principal Sue Forbes and her staff over the past two years. "We know that it is not an easy task, bringing two school communities together," Cameron said. "(This is) a time of transition as you settle into a new building." He added that even in the 21st century, "Catholic education is a living reality," and that now, with the church on the other side of town, "the distance to mass is a little longer," but that the school remains a part of the parish. Todd Lalonde, chair of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario's (CDSBEO) board of directors, praised the "beautiful new state-of-the-art facility ...(with) a bright common area and modern classroom designs." And by having Early Years programs and the Child Development Centre daycare on site, the school has become "a community hub for the town of Smiths Falls."

RIDEAU LAKES PUBLIC LIBRARY RESUMES INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICE AT A COST costs libraries will be taking on. Unwilling to allow further erosion of library service, the Rideau Lakes Public Library board has decided to support interlibrary loan, for now. The board recognizes that by absorbing shipping costs, this puts other services and collection improvements at risk as money will have to be found from other sources in the middle of this year's budget. This might mean purchasing fewer new books and DVDs or delaying technology upgrades. "This will be a trial," said Vicki Stevenson, CEO of the Rideau Lakes Public Library system. "We will do our best with what we

have, but make no mistake this will be tough on rural libraries all across the province." She said the interlibrary loan service returned to Rideau Lakes readers on June 1. "This is a test and a trial to try and get something that will work," said Stevenson, but she noted there would be an opt-out provision if the service got too costly. She also stressed that libraries need sustainable funding by the province to provide an equal service to rural Ontario. For more information on interlibrary loan and other library services, contact Stevenson at vicki@rlpl.ca or call 613-359-5334.

After the abrupt loss of interlibrary loan delivery on April 26, due to budget cuts imposed by the Ontario government, Rideau Lakes Public Library suspended this valuable service of provincewide book and video lending. Since then the library has heard loud and clear from many patrons, including seniors, students and book club members, how much they rely on the service to get the books they want and love to read; they want it back. At this time, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has suggested partial reimbursement of postage costs, but it is unclear how many hidden

HE TOOK OFFICE ON JUNE 1 EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com The Smiths Falls legion has a new president in command. Ken Manwell, recently elected president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95, has big plans to further open the organization to the public to increase membership and bring more awareness about what the legion does for the community. Manwell has been a legion member for 44 years, but he hasn't always been at the Smiths Falls branch. Manwell moved to Smiths Falls six years ago from Orangeville so he and his wife to be closer to their grandchildren. Previously, he was part of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 233 in Orangeville, where he served as president from 2000-2003. "It felt rewarding that I was chosen to be president for this term," said Manwell of being elected president of the Smiths Falls branch. Manwell's involvement in the legion was inspired by his late father Thomas Roy Manwell, who fought in the Second World War. "I wanted to carry on the tradition of my own father," he said. In 1995, a year after his father's death, Manwell became more involved with the legion. Child of an English war bride, Manwell grew up in South Porcupine, Ont., just south of Timmins. The family eventually moved to Cornwall where Manwell was sea cadet for three years between 1960 and 1962. Wherever Manwell has lived he's been community minded. In Orangeville, he spent 25 years working with both the girls and boys mi-

"Everywhere I've lived, I've gotten more community minded," he said. In Smiths Falls, Manwell is president of the Smiths Falls Thursday Night Cruise Night, vice president of the Community Carrot Garden, and a Rotary Club member. In addition to his role as president at the legion, he's also the G6 deputy zone commander. "I still have a lot to accomplish in life," Manwell said. "I love to volunteer. It's all I do." As the legion's new president, he plans to make it his mission to help more people understand what they do. Manwell hopes to open the legion's doors this fall for an open house. He also has created a new position of public relations officer, a role filled by past legion president, Jim Jenkins, and formed a new entertainment committee. "We want to have our own special events, legion sponsored events and invite

the public," he said. This way, instead of just being a venue, like they are for many events in town, the legion wants to be the host. Manwell said he hopes that by opening up the legion more, more people - including those who aren't veterans or family members of veterans - will want to join. This year, the legion has about 273 members. But Manwell said each year they lose about 10 per cent of their membership base. "Just in the last few months, eight members have passed away," he said. "It's a declining membership." The youngest legion member in Smiths Falls is 27 and the oldest is 100. Though there's a wide age range, the base does skew older. Of the 273 members, 180 are over 70. "The legion is looking for younger members. We want to reach out to the Afghan members as well as civilian members of the public," Manwell said. "Anybody can join the legion." And, he emphasized, you don't need to be a member to volunteer.

PICKLEBALL CLUB TO HOST FUN TOURNAMENT JUNE 15 LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Dave and Joan Thornley have only been pickleballers for a year and a half, learning the sport on a cruise a few years ago. "We'd heard of the name but didn't know what it was," admits Dave, as the couple showed some of the finer points of the game to the Record News on Thursday, May 30, at the Gerry Lowe Sens Rink in town. "When we came back from our cruise, we thought we've got to get pickleball started in Smiths Falls." Within a couple weeks, they had received an email that someone was going to start a club in town. "Now, wherever you go, everyone's got a pickleball club," he said with a laugh. It's not just for seniors, though it started with the senior population, Dave said, as it got popular in Florida and Arizona. "It seemed to take a long time before it got here," he said. "This winter was our first organized club," he said. "We started with a few but by the end of the winter we had 64 members and we've had another six (since) we started at the

Painting depends on warm, sunny weather, as the courts will need to be left to dry for a couple days. "We're hoping a couple weeks, they'll be done," they said. nights at 6:15 p.m. or on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at 9:30 a.m. Equipment is available to try the sport if you are just checking it out for fun. For more information, contact president Ann Miskelly at 613283-0482. TIPS FOR BEGINNERS 1. Invest in pickleball shoes - not average running shoes, but a pair of cross trainers, tennis shoes or court shoes which will give you more ankle support, as they allow better side-to-side movement. 2. Take lots of breaks. Don't overplay your physical condition. If you need a break, take one. 3. Wear the right clothing. If you're outside on a sunny day, best to wear light clothing that allows your body to breathe. 4. Be aware of faults know the basic rules. A fault is when the ball is hit out of bounds; when the ball does not pass over the net; when the ball is volleyed from a no-volley zone; when the ball is volleyed before a bounce; and when the ball touches any part of the no-volley zone. 5. Stick to your side of the court - if playing doubles.

THANKS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE Though Paramedic Services Week 2019 was observed May 29 to June 1, our Lanark County Paramedic Service should be celebrated constantly for the vital public services they provide to our citizens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On a daily basis, we see and hear stories about the various ways our paramedics help improve the health of our overall communities, as well as save lives and risk their own in the name of keeping people safe and responding to emergency situations. Not only do paramedics provide compassionate emergent medical care for those who call 9-1-1, they work with or lead health care teams to keep people at home and out of the hospital emergency room through many innovative and dynamic community paramedic programs. They also play a key role in public education about prehospital emergency care. Operated by Almonte General Hospital, the Lanark County Paramedic Service is the only provider of emergency medical response in the county and serve a region of 3,074 square kilometres, made up of 57,000 residents. On average, they respond to more than 22,000 calls each year from its five bases - Almonte, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and Lanark Village. In addition to their daily roles as paramedics, the service has taken on new programs to enhance what they offer to the community. One example is where victims of major trauma, heart attack or stroke are taken directly from home to Ottawa or Kingston hospital to receive advanced care as soon as possible. Paramedics are always updating their skills with the latest training and chief Ed McPherson said the service will continue to roll out the Advanced Care Paramedic Program in 2019, which just launched in March. After completing an additional year of intense training, advanced care paramedics are able to expand on the medical care they provide to patients and offer more medications and treatments that can be administered in home. It's McPherson's goal to have these paramedics spread out across the county. While not attending emergencies, the service focuses on its Community Paramedic Program that serves the needs of the ever-growing geriatric population, in an 'aging at home' approach. Funded in partnership with the South East Local Health Integration Network, this initiative is available to the southern region of Lanark County, where paramedics care for seniors in their homes, which cuts down on the need for hospitalized stays. It is important to raise awareness of the enormous contribution paramedic services' staff members make and to recognize the contribution these medical professionals make to maintain our safe and healthy communities.

Laurie Weir/Torstar Emalee Mussell has recently opened her spa in Smiths Falls and is booking new clients for pedicures, manicures, facials and more. "That's the way we were taught at the academy," she said when I asked her why I would be horizontal for this pedicure. "It's very relaxing." She wasn't kidding. Emalee gentle scrubbed these no-so-pretty dawgs sporting hammertoes, (so she tells me), and other endearing factors like a wonky-growing toenail I've had since a childhood walk in a creek where I sliced it to the bone, broken baby toes with non-existent nails, and some rough, dead skin issues on the heels. She said she's seen worse. Bless her. I sighed. I drifted off into a hazy state while Emalee had me sandal ready in no time. Two coats of a polish of my choice - from a menagerie of colours on a shelf - a quick-drying overcoat and my shiny maroon-coloured toes were soon gleaming under the lights. Her prices are well below the service that was offered on this day. After a tip was added, the cost was

only $40. Emalee also offers manicures, (with shellac), facials, waxing (legs, brows, lips, underarms), lash extensions, and tinting. Her makeup consultations come with skin analysis, colour matching, special events, and bridal packages. Although she's not a registered massage therapist, she offers relaxation massage at a variety of prices depending on the time involved. She uses quality, all natural vegan products that will enhance the high quality of service she provides. Full disclosure - Emalee Mussell is my niece; my brother's oldest daughter. But it's not because we're blood that I want to tell you about her new business: EmfamusSpa, which recently opened in her home in Smiths Falls. I want to tell you about the most relaxing pedicure that I've ever had. It was heavenly. After a busy workweek, I scheduled my first appointment with her. I should have made that appointment weeks ago when she graduated from Ottawa's Versailles Academy of Makeup Arts, Esthetics, and Hair. At 22 years of age, Emalee is a certified esthetician whose clientele is on the rise, thanks to recent genius marketing that has seen a variety of gift baskets fly out the door as stunning prizes for auctions and raffles. Her cosy, welcoming spa is what you'd expect from a professional care provider - one that relaxes the client almost instantly. The beachlike feel has cushy throw rugs to sink your toes into; a massage table upon which to unwind, as a little waterfall gurgles peacefully on a nearby rustic stand. Tranquil shades of blues help transport you to the beach while you enjoy a variety of services offered. After the warm footbath, scrub and pat dry, she encased my cleansed feet in wrapped towels so I could walk across the floor and scoot up onto the massage table.

YOGA FESTIVAL COMING TO SMITHS FALLS Smiths Falls' focus on health and wellness is once again coming to the forefront with the announcement of a brand-new community event - the RISE Yoga and Wellness Festival. "We wanted to create a new and vibrant event that would not only interest members of our own community, but those in surrounding areas as well," said Emily Dickson, owner of Smiths Falls yoga studio Serendipity Lane who's also part of the organizing committee that created the RISE event. "We're thrilled to be able to showcase all of the health-focused businesses and people who have chosen to call Smiths Falls home. This event is about celebrating yoga, health, wellness, community, and recognizing that we are all much more similar than we are different." This free, family-friendly, and educational event - taking place in Centennial Park alongside the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 - will celebrate the community and embracing a healthy lifestyle, and have something for every age and ability. RISE Yoga and Wellness Festival committee member Jarryd Lee has been captivated by the practice of yoga since 2009 and has completed over 2,000 hours of yoga teachertraining in the United States and India. Lee

explained that the word yoga can be translated as "union" - a significant term when it comes to the concept the event committee is trying to promote. "We are trying to embody the concept of union by bringing local residents and visitors together and introducing them to different wellness modalities and practices," she said. "I think we've done a good job and have created something that is truly unique to the Ottawa Valley." The festival will offer a wealth of yoga-inspired activities for participants of all ages and abilities - featuring three yoga classes on the main lawn and six workshops on varying topics such as SUP Yoga, Acroyoga, Oov mobility, barefoot mobility, and mobility tools. Visitors will be invited to take part in as many or as few events as they wish, spend time relaxing in a community tea tent, or learning more about health and wellness from the on-site product vendors. After working up an appetite, visitors won't need to go far. There will be nutritious food and drink vendors on-site to complete the health and wellness experience. For families, child and family-friendly classes - as well as an interactive children's area - will keep young people occupied throughout the day, while a two kilometre children's run will get the day started off on the right foot.

PHASE 2 OF DOWNTOWN PARKING STUDY TO GO AHEAD EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com More analysis assessing the parking in downtown Smiths Falls is set to go ahead. Council agreed at their committee of the whole meeting on Monday, May 27, that they would award the contract for Phase 2 of the parking study to J.L. Richards Consulting Engineers for $30,954.37. Results from the first phase of the parking study will be used to inform Phase 2, which will help lead toward policy and operational changes. While Phase 1 of the study did find there were busy times for parking downtown, it determined that overall, under current demand, the parking supply downtown is adequate. Phase 2 of the study will focus on assessing pay for parking options, best prac-

tices for parking rates, appropriate allocation of accessible parking spaces, reviewing and recommending appropriate zoning provisions for parking space requirements and sharing to maximize the efficiency of maximum spaces, a review and proposal of appropriate cash-in-lieu of parking policy, estimate parking demand in response to proposed zoning changes and anticipated future development in downtown core as well as providing recommendations to enhance the supply of both commercial and overnight parking, including assessing better use of current available lands and creating new supply. It will also address anticipated industry changes that could affect parking management such as ride sharing. Karl Grenke, the town's senior planner, said that there will be two stakeholder consultations as part of the study, with the primary target being downtown business owners, to get feedback on parking in the downtown study area. Coun. Jay Brennan wondered about gathering input from the general public input. Grenke said that the town wants buy-in from people outside the business community, too. He said there will be avenues for the public to provide feedback

Evelyn Harford/Torstar Parking meter on Beckwith Street. whether it's through the town's online portal - Speak Up Smiths Falls - or elsewhere. After questioning from Mayor Shawn Pankow about how the study plans to assess future needs to parking based on the growth the town is experiencing, Grenke said that the town is hearing from developers that there's a need for more residential parking downtown. Coun. Wendy Alford said she'd be interested to see what the parking situation would be like when more rental spaces downtown are occupied, including the new units that are being built. With more demand for parking expected through the projected intensification downtown, she said the town will need to look innovative parking solutions.

RIDEAU COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES CELEBRATES 45 YEARS OF COMMUNITY-DRIVEN HEALTH CARE During two evenings in the spring of 1974, more than 300 local residents packed the Merrickville Community Centre. Bingo? Dinner and dance? No - sparked by a lack of local health care services, these community meetings led to the creation of the village's first medical centre. Forty-five years later, this tradition of local community-driven health care is continuing with a new round of public consultations and plans for a new volunteer advisory board to help guide program development and delivery at Rideau Community Health Services (RCHS). "Community engagement is really important when we think about health care change and being responsive to our communities," said RCHS CEO Michele Bellows, who took on the post in February. In 1987, Merrickville's two-doctor medical centre transformed into Ontario's first rural Community Health Centre, and in 2011 grew into RCHS. Today, RCHS serves more than 7,250 clients in 13 communities across Lanark, Leeds and Grenville from offices

in Merrickville, Smiths Falls, Perth and Brockville. "I quickly realized that a Community Health Centre wasn't just a doctor's office," said physiotherapist Ruth Dimopoulos, who in 1993 joined the then Merrickville Community Health Centre as one of its first extended health care team members. "Our mission is to look at what keeps a whole community healthy." In 2002, taking on this mission of proactive programming responsive to community needs, Dimopoulos created a popular aquafit program for local residents with chronic pain. One enthusiastic participant was Colette Durand; now 85, Durand uses her walker to make a once-amonth journeys of several blocks to the RCHS' Merrickville offices for foot care. "They call me by my name. So friendly, it's like a family," she said, the lilt of her French accent intact. The feeling she describes reflects an integrated, team-based approach to health care that today involves about 85 staff - rang-

ing from nurse practitioners and family physicians to social workers, respiratory therapists and specialists reached via telemedicine. In total, they deliver more than two dozen separate services, from oral health to diabetes education. "The way that our programs work, we wrap ourselves around the individual," said Bellows. "And this support is strengthened by our knowledge of and working relationships with a network of partners in the community," from Open Doors for Children and Youth to the Alzheimer Society. The RCHS' team-based approach is also solidly grounded in the latest evidence-based best practice, says Dimopoulos. Now health care quality improvement adviser, she's currently heading up an RCHS-led, multi-organization initiative to improve local palliative c5are. "We're identifying people who can benefit from palliative care earlier, not just very briefly at the end of life," she said.

HAPPY 88th BIRTHDAY June 3, 2019 Phyllis Barrie WithLove and Best Wishes For Good Health and Happiness

(October 11, 1941-May 16, 2019) Survived by his beloved wife Vivienne (Kwissa), his brothers-in-law Donald Bedford (Christine) and Richard Kwissa (Joan); his nieces Tracy and Tobi Kwissa and their children Emily, Fletcher and Megan, Sophie and Alexander. Predeceased by his parents John and Bertha (Messenger) and his brother Raymond. Howard emigrated from England to Ottawa in September, 1967, just in time to celebrate his 26th birthday in October and enjoy Expo 67 in Montreal. His first year was lived apartment sharing with a friend who was spending Howard’s contributions to their living expenses behind his back and disappeared back to England when found out. As co-signer, Howard had to take on a large debt for which he wasn’t responsible. Luckily for me, he moved in with my family as a boarder “until he could get things sorted out” and we married two and a half years later in 1971. Our first year of married life was spent traveling to British Columbia and back to Ontario while Howard audited the General Tire stores in the western provinces. The New Westminster stay was particularly nice, lasting close to five months. We stayed at a hotel bachelor apartment directly across the street from the store. It was like having our first home and I could look from the 4th floor balcony to see Howard crossing the road. We traded in our first “baby”, a 1967 Pontiac Firebird that had barely got us through the Rocky Mountains from Edmonton, for a 1970 Pontiac GTO muscle car. I think that was always our favourite set of wheels and earned me my only speeding ticket! We bought our first house in the countryside in 1979 and Howard put his enjoyment of reading DIY books to good use in building decks, raised gardens, and creating lovely flower beds. His interests moved more to the indoors when home and work computers evolved. He had a natural skill working on the computer and helping others with work and home projects. Howard and I had always shared a mutual love of music and a large accomplishment on his part was to create the first extensive website on jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. He spent hours and months inputting information as a tribute to the great musician and received much recognition and appreciation for his efforts. It surprised me that eventually he couldn’t go on with the project. I thought it was because other sites on Monk were appearing on the Internet but now I think it was because he was slowly becoming ill. Howard retired from his work with the City of Ottawa, Social Services, in 2007. He described it as being his “last job and his best job”. I thought he would have many years ahead of him to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and that his need to start walking with a cane was just from age and fatigue. We went through several house moves in a short space of time trying to downsize and improve our finances. Howard was one of the brightest people I knew but was suddenly having difficulty keeping the car from drifting to the right when he drove, repeating things I had just said as though they were original thoughts, always saying “I’m just getting old”. It took two years to convince our family doctor that something was wrong. It took the neurologist just a matter of minutes to diagnose the problem as PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I think we just looked blank at the diagnosis having never heard of it before but I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach by the words, “I’m very sorry”. I knew then that this was something that couldn’t be fixed and our time remaining would be drastically different. PSP is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s Disease. Sadly, there is no cure and as the name says, it’s progressive. It’s main symptoms are loss of balance and falling backward, difficulty looking up and down, eye sensitivity to light, and weakening of the throat muscles leading to pneumonia. Howard battled the disease for eight years but eventually made the choice to let it run its course. His body wasted away and he had no strength left. He spent his last year living at the Hilltop Manor, Merrickville. The staff did their best to keep him as comfortable as possible in his final days and marvelled at how long he held on. I think it was a great unhappiness for both me and them when he let go. Our time together wasn’t always perfect, Papa, but one thing I told you often will always be true: You always were and always will be my very best friend. I will miss you every day. I hope your suffering is over and your spirit is with past family, friends, and the many lovely “critters” that shared our lives. All my love, Vivienne In lieu of flowers donations in Memory of Howard may be made to the Cure PSP organization. Arrangements entrusted to the, Byers Funeral Home, South Mountain (613-989-3836). Online condolences may be made at www.byersfuneralhomeinc.com

DEATH NOTICE

Rathwell, Mary Eleanor (nee Nixon)

Mary passed away on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019 in Ottawa, at the age of 94 years. Beloved wife of the late Jack Rathwell, Mary was the adored mother of Cynthia, and cherished “Bubby” to Sophia and Sonja Swettenham. She will be missed, as well, by nieces Marlene Vlaanderen and Sharon Nixon. Mary was predeceased by her parents (William Nixon and Charlotte (Miller), brother Hugh (late Evelyn) and, recently, brother Jim (Iris). Born in Peterborough but raised in Perth, Mary maintained a strong connection to the town and fond memories of her youth with her extended family in the Miller, Hutchings and Nixon families, and with close neighbours. She passed on her love of Perth to her family, and inspired each of us with her individualism, determination and devotion. Her family meant the world to her, as she did to them. Family and friends are invited to a reception to celebrate Mary’s life at 2413 Scotch Line Road, at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 16th, 2019. In her memory, donations to The Great War Memorial Hospital would be appreciated.

Brown, Roy Gilbert

July 27, 1936 May 28, 2019 After a brief illness, Roy passed away peacefully at Queensway Carleton Hospital on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. Loving husband of the late Esther and good friend to his first wife Patricia. Loving father of Greg (Lisa) and Paul and loving stepfather to Alan and Marnie. Special grandfather to Kyle and Meredith and step-grandfather to Ben, Jackson, and Will. Dear son of the late Roy and Eula Brown and predeceased by his brother Ray (Mare). After completing a Master of Engineering degree at Queen’s University, Roy went to work as a P.Eng. at the Acres firm in Niagara Falls, deciding to work in the field rather than take an offer to complete a PhD in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Over the next 60 years, Roy worked at engineering and structural steel firms in Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and ultimately, established his own engineering consulting company based in Stratford, Ontario. Over his career, Roy worked on some of the most significant engineering projects across Canada and internationally - including hydroelectric dams, cranes servicing container ports, and countless structures that define the skylines in many cities. He did his good work into his 80s and only retired from engineering in January 2019. Roy, like his brother and his wife, was involved with Rotary in Stratford and was honoured with Rotary’s highest award, the Paul Harris Award. At Roy’s request, and in his typical unassuming manner, there will be no service. A private family gathering on Corn Hill Beach in Cape Cod (Roy’s favourite place) will be convened in the coming weeks. Donations in Roy’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Sharp, Annie Ursula (nee Cole)

With great sadness, the loving family of Ann, announce her passing, peacefully at home on May 27, 2019, with her family by her side, at the age of 76. Beloved wife of the late Gord for 50 years and loving mother of Stephen (Caroline) Sharp and Mary-Lou (Stuart) Vandervaart. Beloved and proud Granann and Nan to Margaux (Reagan), Cassie (Christina), Cole (Holly), Clarke (Grace) and Cooper. Ann is survived by her loving family, sisters Emma (Walt) Rodway, Bev (Frank) Antle and brother Eric (Ev) Cole and many kind and special nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her sister-in-law and cousin Peggy Sharp and sister-in-law Marlene Sharp. Predeceased by her mother Hazel (nee Clarke) and father Stephen, big sister Mill (Boyd) Whelan, brothers-in- law Ken Sharp and Don Sharp and sister-in-law Gail Sharp. Ann was born in Victoria, Newfoundland on December 28, 1942. She moved to Toronto at the young age of 17 and began working in banking, where she continued throughout most of her career. She met and married Gord in Toronto in 1964. Work took them to many locations across Canada, finally settling to raise their children in Riverview N.B. After retiring from the CIBC, Ann and Gord moved to Carleton Place to spend time with their family. With their many moves, Ann left special friends all across Canada, from Toronto, Orangeville and Beckwith to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Many thanks for the special care our Mom received from so many including Dr. Drake, Jessica and the nurses at Bayshore, Marjorie and the staff from the Mills, the UCW ladies, and the team at the Ottawa Civic Medical Day Care Unit that always were so kind to both our parents. Ann was especially thankful to have been such a huge part of her five grandchildren’s lives. She often said she couldn’t believe she was so lucky to be able to do that. She was so very proud of the young adults they have become and the exciting paths that each of them is taking in their lives. Ann was fully aware of the special place that she held in the lives of her grandchildren, children and their partners, as they showed her with their words, their actions, and their time. Her heart was full, and she was so thankful. A Life Celebration will take place July 6. If you so desire, a donation in her memory can be made to the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Canada Inc at alpha1canada.ca.

Once again, the Friends of the Smiths Falls and District Library will be holding their giant book sale on Daniel Street, beside the library. The sale takes place on Sunday, June 9, from 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. The Friends of the Library is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting the cause of the library. Started in 1994, the Friends organization has continued to promote literacy in the community, especially among children. The Friends assist the library in maintaining its high profile as a provider of educational resources, and recreational experiences through fundraising efforts and advocacy. Every year the Friends provide funding for the Smith Falls Library's excellent Patricia Foulkes Summer Programs. Three times in recent years they have presented quality, hardcover books to junior public school students in Smiths Falls, most recently those at Chimo. Our Giant Library Book Sale on June 9 will once again yield funding for similar, worthwhile literacy-promoting efforts in the community. We have hardcovers and paperbacks of every description. As well, we are offering a free book to each child who attends the book sale (while supplies last). And there are plenty of popular novels by popular authors at popular prices for interested adults as well. See you there. – Submitted by the Friends of the Smiths Falls Library

DANDELIONS BROUGHT A SMILE TO FATHER'S FACE

BUMPER CROP MEANT PLENTY OF HOMEMADE WINE, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Father was in his glory: the dandelions were in full bloom, and as thick as thieves. They were even covering the west hill, which Father said never happened! That meant there would be a good batch for his dandelion wine, and not a day too soon. Aunt Bertha and Uncle Alec had been over for a game of euchre in the past week, and the dregs of the

last bottle brought up from the cellar had been polished off over the evening. All the tubing, pails and pans had been scoured, and the bottles saved as each bottle was drained over the past year and had been boiled on the back of the Findlay Oval. Everything was ready except of course, for picking the dandelions. It was a job that we five children were facing, and not one of us relished it one bit! Each plant had to be stripped of its leaves and put in a special basket, and the bright blossoms in another; Father was only interested in the blossoms. Mother would boil the leaves, toss them with butter and salt and pepper, and they would appear on our supper table in due course. The remaining stocks were left

to die. It didn't matter how many dandelions we picked, there always seemed to be another batch appearing in a few days! Since it was still crop planting time, and getting the fields into shape, Father of course could only work on his winemaking at night, and that was after the chores were done. It always amazed me how, at any other time, he would collapse in a chair after supper with his feet on the oven door and the Ottawa Farm Journal in his lap, and fall asleep almost as soon as he sat down. Making his dandelion wine seemed to give him energy. I had no idea how the process went. I knew that the blossoms were boiled, strained, tubed and the juice bottled eventually, but the less I knew about

own wine and beer. She said she knew for a fact that very likely they would rot in jail and never again see the light of day, all because they made their own homebrew! I could picture my poor father. Probably, they wouldn't even let him change out of his work overalls and into a decent pair of pants before hauling him off. Who would do the chores and plant the crops and get enough wood cut to keep us warm over the winter? I knew I had to go to my sister Audrey and tell her about my anguish over what could happen to our dear father. Audrey said that I wasn't to believe a word of what bad Marguerite said. And when I asked her how she could be so sure, she said because the last time Marguerite's father had been

the procedure, the better I liked it. And it had to do with bad Marguerite, the bane of my life at the Northcote School! Her parents, she told me time and again, never had anything even remotely like wine or beer pass their lips. Her mother went into Renfrew regularly to go to the Women's Temperance Union. I wasn't at all interested in what her mother did. What I was interested in, and in fact what kept me awake at night, was what Marguerite told me could happen to my father if he was ever caught making dandelion wine - he'd go straight to jail! She rhymed off the names of several people I had never heard of, who were at that very moment locked up in Renfrew, serving a good long sentence for making their

at our house to talk to Father about running in the last election and was looking for Father's vote, he sat at the very kitchen table we were sitting at; he had a cigar in one hand, and a full glass of dandelion wine in the other! I gave Audrey a big hug, and when Father sent us back out to gather more dandelions, the job didn't seem to be so bad after all. If the wine gave my father a bit of pleasure, that was fine with me ... and a pox on bad Marguerite! Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? The RedHawks track and field team at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute is soaring to high speeds, heights and distances. Six athletes recently competed at the East Regional pre-OFSAA meet in Belleville. The top performers from eastern Ontario, Ottawa and central Ontario have earned their place at this high-level competition by placing in the top five at EOSSAA. The top four qualifiers move on to OFSAA. Three of these athletes will move on to the Ontario championships, including Tavo Stringel, Blake Dopson and Eleanor Hall. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
