HAIR RAISING EXPERIENCE
COMMUNITY
News - The Relay for Life event, held in Smiths Falls on Friday, June 13, was highlighted by the hair cutting of Rylin Taylor, 12. His mother, Jackie Tay watches as stylist John Ovens does the honours. Rylin raised $700 after growing his hair for wigs for children who have lost their own hair to cancer. He has been growing his hair for two years. The Relay event raised more than $50,000 this year. See pages 55 to 58 for a special pull-out section.
News - The Province of Ontario may have a majority Liberal government but local ridings remained staunchly Conservative following last Thursday’s election. To the surprise of few, Randy Hillier was the runaway winner in Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington. The PC candidate won his third mandate, receiving 21,966 votes or 43.6 per cent. Bill MacDonald of the Liberals was a distant second with 14,957 votes. New Democrat Dave Parkhill received 20.3 per cent of the vote (10,207) while Green candidate Cam Mather received 6.5 per cent. See pages 4 and 5 for full details. It was a similar story in Leeds-Grenville where the margin of victory was even wider. Progressive Conservative Steve Clark received a solid 23,201 votes or a whopping 56 per cent of the total ballots cast. Liberal Christine Milks, running for provincial office for the first time, came second with just 8,500 votes (20.5 per cent) and David Lundy was third with 7,219 votes (17.4 per cent). See page SF3 for more on this riding.

News - Get set for a day jampacked with fun and exciting activities and events guaranteed to get hearts racing in downtown Smiths Falls on Saturday, June 21 at the Healthy Living Festival! Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Healthy Living Festival is a one day, free, outdoor event in downtown Smiths Falls. “Visitors can expect to find live music, a ball hockey tournament, Cardio Move-a-Thon fundraiser for JumpStart, rock climbing wall, bouncy castles… not to mention the fire jugglers and unicyclist,” festival committee chair, Tracey Pankow explained, adding that for those who are looking for a quieter day they can check out the more than 60 vendors or one of the healthy seminars. The day begins with the Little Thing Running Thing – a free race for children 10 and under. The race begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of Park Street and James Street and will feature a 500 metre and 1km race. Children will have the opportunity to decorate
their own bib prior to the event, ribbons will be available for all participants. Following the Little Thing Run, opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. First on the list for the ceremony is the award for the 2014 Healthy Living Ambassador. The 2013 Ambassador, Corey Turnbull, will be on hand to award the trophy to the recipient for 2014. Among the nominees were Caroline Foster from CardioFit 4 Life, Emilee Tones, from Smiths Falls & District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI), Melissa Hillier, from Zendragon Martial Arts and Fitness, and John Maloney. The Move-a-Thon, a 90 minute Canadian Tire Jumpstart fundraising event, will be held between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Instructors from across the region will take to the stage during the festival to give participants the only workout they’ll need all week! Workshops will be held on Main St. W. featuring activities such as Piloxing and Zumba.
Demonstrations from the Taosit Tai Chi at 1 p.m. and Breathe Dance Company at 3 p.m. on Russell Street will delight spectators, while healthy seminars (located in the tent on Russell Street) will offer visitors a chance to take a break and fill themselves in on some useful health related information. Vendors will be open for business on Beckwith Street N. all day long; there are currently over 60 vendors registered! As if these activities weren’t enough, kids and adults can be amazed throughout the day by wandering jugglers and unicyclists, while free face painting and balloon animals will be sure to bring a smile to any kids’ face. The rock climbing wall, obstacle course, bouncy castles, jousting and the strength challenge High Stryker, will ensure there is something for everyone at the festival!
