No infectious outbreaks, lowered debt load for Smiths Falls hospital Desmond Devoy
desmond.devoy@metroland.com
News – No infectious outbreaks have been reported at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital for the last five years. “This is very unusual in our business,” admitted the hospital’s president and chief executive officer, Linda Bisonette, during her speech to the hospital’s annual general meeting at the Smiths Falls site on Tuesday, June 24. But she did commend the staff for their diligence through infection control and prevention practises for making this so. Bisonette will be retiring as the hospital’s leader at the end of October, and she admitted that her time at the hospital has not been without its
frustrations. “I would be remiss if I did not admit that, when I stood before you last year at the AGM (that) I was somewhat intimidated by the challenges that lay ahead,” she said. Now, however, the hospital has moved into the black, financially, with a year-end surplus from operations of $1.7 million, and their efforts have been validated with a plaque from Accreditation Canada for accreditation with exemplary standing. “We are on course for debt retirement,” she added, before noting that the hospital was “moving towards a more integrated level of care. Our partners are now an active part of our work.” See HOSPITAL page SF4

Classic cheque Sports – For the 21st year, the Cancer Classic held at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club was another success, this year raising $18,000 for the cause, bringing the grand total to $400,000. Red Blair of the Classic golf committee is joined by Amanda Gifford, fundraising coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville. The cheque presentation was made at the golf course on June 26.
News - The Falls were alive with the sound of music at the Highland on the Rideau bagpiping, marching and drumming competition in Smiths Falls on June 28. Mark Stravy, a member of the Smiths Falls Gordon Pipe Band trio, belts out a tune on a warm summer’s day. Jeff Mackey/METROLAND
