Pan Am Games fever reaches Smiths Falls

A light for the town

Laurie Weir & Stacey Roy

The Pan Am Parapan Torch touched down in Smiths Falls last week to much fanfare, entertainment and excitement. Starting from the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre, where Debbie Roy led the run through town, she tapped off to Jacqueline Franklin just after the noon hour. Then it was Freddie Kehoe to Stephanie Etheridge, who found Metroland sponsored torch bearer, Neil Doef on Beckwith Street amongst a healthy crowd of supporters. Neil, in his wheelchair for the 200-metre stretch of Beckwith into the Cenotaph Park, was cheered on by a rousing crowd. “I’m pumped right now. It’s such an honour to represent this incredible community,” Doef said on stage. See PAN AM page SF4

Metroland sponsored torchbearer, Neil Doef, is pictured lighting the cauldron at Cenotaph Park on July 2 as the Pan Am Torch Run Relay made its way through Smiths Falls en route to kickstart the Games Friday in Toronto. Doef, a local hockey hero who has won the hearts of many, was cheered on by an exuberant crowd as he walked from his wheelchair to light the flame. Doef suffered a spinal cord injury in December last year and has been tenacious in his recovery. The community, friends and family near and far have raised more than $200,000 to help in his rehabilitation. More on the Games inside.
