News - On Wednesday July 3, at 4:24 p.m. the Lanark County OPP received a 911 call regarding an accident at Rosedale Road and Roger Stevens Drive involving a car and a motorcycle. “A preliminary examination of

the accident scene suggests that the car was travelling north on Rosedale while the motorcycle was headed towards Smiths Falls on Roger Stevens Drive at the time of the collision,” said Sgt. Mark Monker of the Lanark OPP. Both the female driver of the Toyota Corolla and the male

driver of the motorcycle were taken to the Smiths Falls site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital by ambulance with the male victim due to be airlifted to the Ottawa Civic. “There were no fatalities and both victims were conscious and talking to us,” said Monker. The intersection was closed

for a little over an hour as rescue workers, paramedics and police worked the scene. “There are a lot of accidents at this corner, they need to put in a traffic light,” said Dominic Gallelli, who lives on Rosedale just off the intersection with Roger Stevens, but did not witness the accident.

News - Intriguing is the word that came to everyone’s mind during a presentation made at the committee-of-the-whole at Smiths Falls town council on July 8. Robert Bush of Edgely, Bush and Associates, a sustainable technologies facilitating company, spoke about the proposal. “It’s an intriguing proposal, and we’re pleased that you approached us for this opportunity,” said Mayor Dennis Staples.

The presentation outlined a proposed waste processing pilot project that would eliminate the need for landfill sites, can fuel itself, isolates certain recyclables and produces a by-product that can be used as a fertilizer. “We believe waste is not waste but a misused resource,” said Ron Denom, of Terragon Technologies, the company that developed the process for the US Navy and Canadian Department of Defence. The Micro Gasification System (MAGS) is, according to the

company website, “the world’s most compact and environmentally friendly solid waste treatment appliance.” It looks like nothing more than a high-tech furnace and works by heating waste to a temperature of 750 C, in a low oxygen chamber. The process consumes all organic waste, converting it into a fuel gas that runs the unit. Meanwhile it traps the carbon produced from the waste into an inert product called bio-char that can be used as a fertilizer. It also destroys, plastics, sludge, cloth, oils and

grease, animal waste, chemicals and agricultural waste among other things while sanitizing metals and glass leaving them intact and recyclable. Council was generally very receptive to the proposal. “I’m intrigued by the notion, but there are a lot of unanswered questions,” said Coun. Ken Graham. Initial project cost was one concern, the logistics of transportation and transitioning See GREEN page SF2

Events - What do rakes, bowling balls, catalytic converters and chain saws have in common? They’re the inspiration behind Bernard Beaudry’s delightfully whimsical garden sculptures, which will be on display at Art in the Barn on the Lombardy Fairgrounds July 13 and 14. “I will be displaying both the garden critters and a few of my oil paintings at the show,” explains Beaudry. Like many of the more than 40 Rideau Lake artists who will be at Art in the Barn, Beaudry displays his work at about three to four shows every summer. “It’s the fun of going to these shows and interacting with the customers,” he says with a chuckles. In its third year, Art in the Barn has been gathering a loyal following. “At Art in the Barn, people start arriving usually at 9:30 a.m. even though the show doesn’t really open until 10 a.m.,” says Beaudry. The popular show and sale is also a fundraiser for the Do It For Daron (DIFD) fund supporting youth mental health at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. “This is our third annual show and sale and there is no charge at the door, but donations are welcome,” says organizer Nora Brown. Purchases can be made by Visa or Mastercard and 10 per cent of all sales will be donated to the DIFD fund. As usual, the participating artists will be on hand to talk about their work. This year the offerings have expanded and the variety continues to grow. “There are a few new artists this year and quite a range of arts on display,” says Margaret Kelk, a painter and quilter who is one of the newbies. The barn is located west of Smiths Falls on Highway 15 at Kelly Road. Show is on from 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m.
