Moose commuter train threatened by track issues at an Ottawa bridge Amy Hogue

Story on page SF2.
A one-kilometre stretch of track in Ottawa could threaten to derail the Moose commuter train project. Moose Consortium Inc. will soon be filing a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) protesting that the City of Ottawa has altered the approach to the Prince of Wales Bridge, and removed 100 metres of track, threatening the integrity of the railway. Moose Consortium is proposing a 100 per cent commercially financed and operated passenger railway service using existing railways. Doubledecker trains will traverse Ottawa and Gatineau, and will operate out to six semi-rural towns of the Greater National Capital Region, including Smiths Falls, Arnprior, and Alexandria, in Ontario. Quebec service will eventually extend to Montebello and Wakefield. Moose Consortium director general, Joseph Potvin, explained it is the Ottawa-owned stretch of track that travels out of the province of Ontario and into the province of Quebec

The tracks at the Prince of Wales Bridge in Ottawa may be a stickler in the decision to bring the Moose commuter train to Smiths Falls. that makes the Moose commuter rail project a federally regulated railway. “That’s by the far the most important single kilometre of the entire 400 kilometres,” Potvin said. According to Potvin, the Chaudiere Extension, which has been in place since the 1800s to connect the western Quebec and eastern Ontario railways, has been discontinued by the City of Ottawa, and track has been removed
from that section, severing the line. In order to remove a section of railway, the city would have been required to apply for permission from the CTA, but the City of Ottawa hasn’t done that, Potvin said. Moose Consortium had previously filed a complaint with the CTA against the City of Ottawa in 2011, with the complaint that the city was discontinuing the railway without due process.
