News - While it wasn’t packed all day, there was a constant stream of people arriving at the Rideau Rural Roots Festival throughout last weekend. The extraordinarily well-organized and entertaining festival was enjoyed by all who attended. “Actually I was really impressed; it’s bigger than I thought it was going to be,” said Evelyn Perkins, visiting from Ottawa. There were a number of stand-out highlights at this year’s festival including the Amazing Race, which saw five teams registered. “They have to have a bit of knowledge of Smiths Falls history and legends, and the winner will not necessarily be the fastest but maybe the luckiest!” said Jim McPherson, festival organizer. Certainly the teams seemed to have fun tracking down the clues and making their way back to the starting point on Saturday

to establish the order of departure the next morning. “We had fun laughing with and at each other,” said Lorraine Fenn, who had entered the race with her 11-year old daughter Celeste, as her teammate. While everyone said they were able to decipher the clues and get to the locations they were directed to, there were other challenges. “The hardest part was finding the clue boxes, we had to search some pretty large areas to find an object the size of a shoebox,” said Anne Shropshire, Railway Museum curator who had entered the race with Leah McRoberts, her protégé and program outreach coordinator at the museum. The challenge resulted in a bit of cooperation, at least on Saturday. “No one was going to finish the race unless we worked together – then again today may be different,” said McRoberts, on Sunday. As it happens McRoberts and Shropshire were arbitrarily eliminated at the

start of the race on Sunday leaving four teams to compete for first and second prize. The winners were the two teams fielded by Zendragon Martial Arts, Team ‘Dragon Our Butts’ - Brian Nelson and Melissa Hillier co-owners of Zendragon and ‘Team Zen There Was One’ which was made up of Stephanie Lucas, Zendragon coach and Alison Volk, student. While they were happy to win the barbecue they also donated $100 to Crime Stoppers. Besides the two-day Amazing race there were so many other things to see and do. “I loved the period pieces inside the Kinsman Pavilion, and the Chinese music and dancer on Saturday, and I really enjoyed walking along the water,” said Perkins. The displays inside the pavilion were eclectic. Bill Dobson had set up a small display of unusual antiques including a chair made out of spinning wheel parts, and a

lawn roller sized for a child. Right next to his display was a spectacular collection of antique cameras spanning several decades from Chris Uhlig’s collection. Back outside music filled the park from the moment it opened until it closed or so it seemed. A wide variety of concession stands offering services, goods, crafts and raising awareness for all kinds of causes, made for an interesting and easy to navigate walk through the park until visitors reached either the main stage or the Kinsmen’s tent where many children’s activities were happening. “I’m glad it’s here, I like this location much better,” said Smiths Falls resident Deanna Garton, “So far today, I’ve had a Reiki treatment, and now I’m really enjoying the music.” With so many free passes and a nominal entry fee of $3, there’s no doubt all those who attended got their money’s worth. “I think it’s great, I don’t understand why more people didn’t come on Saturday,” said Terri Benentt of Smiths Falls. “I’ve really enjoyed the music.”
