Stolen vehicle found outside Smiths Falls
Confederation Bridge deck to be removed
Sometime overnight on July 19, someone entered the driveway of a residence on Grovenor Street and stole a 2001 beige Pontiac vehicle. The vehicle was later located abandoned outside Smiths Falls with some severe damage to it. Let’s help catch this car thief and call Crime Stoppers. Arron Cayer from For Pivots Sake in Ottawa was at the Smiths Falls Skateboard Park on Saturday, July 18. Children in the area were invited to the park to collect a free used skateboard and given a chance to experience the sport. Cayer was showing children how to perform maintenance on their skateboard. The Smiths Falls Skate Jam was hosted by Kelford Youth Services Inc., the Antique Skate Shop and For Pivots Sake.
Councillors have asked staff to look into options to remove the asphalt and wood deck on Confederation Bridge after learning regular snow removal would have to be completed on the structurally unsound bridge this winter. “I can’t picture having staff members out there with shovels in the winter shoveling it off,” remarked Coun. John Maloney. “I don’t think that would be very responsible,” added Mayor Shawn Pankow. Scott Poole of Greer Galloway Group recommended that Confederation Bridge could hold no more than one foot (0.3 metres) of snow on the deck before shoveling would have to be done. He suggested staff of no more than four persons with hand shovels be allowed on the bridge to shovel before and after a major snow fall in the winter this year. Alternatively, one or two hand snow blowers may also be acceptable, staff reported. Councillors largely supported the decision to remove the asphalt and wood deck of the bridge to allow the
