Museum fears for future amid budgetary pressures Stacey Roy

News - Ongoing Smiths Falls council queries around the town’s museum budget and operations has led to increased concern about the museum’s future beyond 2014. “We’re trying to keep the doors open. We don’t know what’s going to happen in 2015,” said Gary Lackey, chair of the Heritage House Museum’s advisory board. The museum came under criticism by councillors Dawn Quinn, Chris Cummings and Shawn Pankow this week when it comes to management and revenue. “I’m hoping that we’ll see some changes next year,” Cummings said. Heritage House Museum operates under a town bylaw and through an advisory board. The museum did receive support for two bylaws coming to next week’s council session. The first will see $7,341.28 from unused museum reserve funds cover the cost of a part-time staff member at the museum in 2014. Kevin O’Dair, community development officer, presented the request at the town’s Monday night meeting. Pankow voiced his concern in using reserve funds for staffing, adding discussion on other operational elements must take place soon. “It is a great asset to the community, but I’m not sure it is an asset that needs to be open the hours and days it is year
around,” Pankow said. Carol Miller, museum curator, noted Heritage House Museum is the only yearround tourism asset in town, which means it is in a key location to answer tourists’ questions, accept donations for other assets and answer historical requests. “It just doesn’t magically happen,” Miller said. In the winter months Miller plans exhibits, hosts March Break camp and writes various grant applications for funding. This is why the museum and its board is asking to maintain staffing at two full-time staff. Currently it is operating at 1.5 full-time staff, and Miller feels staffing presents a security issue. The museum is located on four floors and holds 100,000 artifacts valued at $1 million. Heritage House Museum is the only site to house Smiths Falls history from its first day to today. The second bylaw gave support for a new fee structure with minor increases. Miller emphasized any change to hours may affect the grant the town receives for the museum. She urges councillors to see the museum as the asset it is. “There are a lot of services that we provide the community that we can’t charge for,” Miller said. Stacey Roy/METROLAND A museum monthly report has been requested, as well as further discussion on operations in the coming months. “I look forward to the discussion of Community - Livia Elliot fearlessly challenges Karson Swerbrick in a game of soccer July 23 on the Heritage what this asset means to us,” Coun. Jay House Museum grounds. The fun sports game was part of the kids summer camp week at the museum. Brennan said.
