Lombardy Fair celebrated 150 years last weekend with a record number of exhibitors. Lots of fun was had by all who filed into the fairgrounds for four days of excitement. See more photos on page SF10 this week.

Saturday, Aug. 6 will be a day of celebration in Smiths Falls. Organizers of the third annual Rideau Paddlefest are hoping area residents will join in and take time to appreciate everything the community has to offer. “I would like them to really appreciate what we have here: heritage, nature, culture… All the things that make this place worthy of being a world heritage site,” Peter Au, Paddlefest co-chair, said. Voyageur canoe races getting under way at 9 a.m. are once again the main attraction at the festival, taking place at Lower Reach Park on the Rideau Canal. Eight racing teams will be participating, following training sessions under the expert guidance of Max Finkelstein, a renowned long-distance paddler and author. “My goal is to get people out on the water so they can enjoy the actual waterway that runs right through our town,” Pat Graveline, co-chair, said. A member of the committee that has organized the Spring Fling Running Thing for the past six years, Graveline said, “It’s all about getting people moving.” The full day of free activities from 9 to 5 p.m. also features canoe tours,

paddling demonstrations, educational displays, and for the first time, live musical entertainment. Canoe tours beginning at 10 a.m., and offered free of charge for all ages and levels of experience, will include commentary on the history of the canal by Parks Canada staff. Two 25foot canoes for these tours are being provided by Ingrid Bron, economic development and tourism coordinator for the Town of Smiths Falls. Paddling demonstrations will be provided by Becky Mason, daughter of paddling icon Bill Mason, and by Harmony Dawn of Urban Ocean, who will demonstrate standup paddle-boarding, offered hourly throughout the day. The program for the day includes children’s activities. Laser tag and other games are being sponsored by Siloki Centre, and there will be face painting and crafts. Music will be offered on the Kinsmen Stage from 2 to 5 p.m., beginning with award-winning fiddler Ellen Daly from 2 to 3 p.m. Classic rock trio The British Invasion will play from 3 to 4 p.m. The day’s entertainment will end with Ottawa’s Blues Lady Maria Hawkins, playing from 4 to 5 p.m. Highlights of Hawkins’ 30-year professional career include See PADDLEFEST page SF2
