News – Ongoing efforts by a local property owner to remove a non-paying man from her property has shined a light on the cracks in the mental health care system and the inability of property owners in Ontario to protect themselves. According to Dave Pringle, the
property manager, he received a call from Lanark County Mental Health (LCMH) on Friday, June 27, asking for emergency housing support for one of their clients over the weekend. By Monday, June 30, the man refused to leave the Park Avenue premises and the mental health organization “washed their hands”
of the placement, Pringle said. In these last six weeks no rent has been paid nor would it be accepted, as Pringle states: “Our position is that he’s trespassing.” Pringle, and Elaine Rempel, coowner of CRE Investments which owns the property, fear for the five tenants who still live in the rooming house.
Pringle said the man has allegedly turned on the stove and left the apartment, piled newspapers on the stove and is crowding the common areas of the property with personal items. He is also alleged to have blocked other tenants in their room by piling his material

Sports – Smiths Falls’ own Gerry Lowe Memorial Sens RINK (Recreation Investment in Neighbourhoods for Kids) is set to become a reality with a groundbreaking ceremony slated for Wednesday, Aug. 20. If the final bylaw is passed at council on Monday, Aug. 18, then construction can begin as early as Thursday, Aug. 21. “As soon as we work out some of the details… we could be back by Monday, which would meet the deadline,” said the town’s new chief administrative officer, Malcolm Morris, during town council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting on Monday, Aug. 11. While Morris said that the situation was being driven by an “aggressive timetable,” he said it was still “doable” and he commended the proposal as “a tremendously generous offer being presented to council.” The Aug. 20 groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and, according to the Ottawa Senators Foundation, could likely be the last stop on the Senators’ Summer Tour, after Kingston earlier that morning. There may even be some Sens players in town, but that hasn’t been confirmed at this point. The plan for this outdoor arena was first brought up on Jan. 27 of this year at council, of the joint proposal between the Gerry Lowe Memorial Foundation and the Senators Foundation. The site will boast two regulation size hockey nets and four basketball nets for recreational use during the warmer months. The surface can also be used for lacrosse and ball hockey. It will be free of charge.
