Hillier challenges Hudak’s hold on Tory leadership By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

News – Area MPP Randy Hillier is one of the leaders of a push to get provincial Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak to face a leadership review in London, Ont. next month. While Hudak faced a mandatory leadership review after losing the 2011 provincial election, Hillier, along with NewmarketAurora MPP Frank Klees, is urging the party to amend its constitution to make Hudak once again face party faithful at a policy convention after it took only one of five seats in a series of by-elections held on Thursday, Aug. 1.

The Tories took only the Toronto riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore, their first win in the city since 1999. They had been polling well in London West and Ottawa South, but those seats were taken by the New Democratic Party and the Liberals respectively. Scarborough-Guildwood stayed Liberal, while WindsorTecumseh shifted from the Liberals to the NDP. Hillier was unavailable for comment as he was on a fishing vacation last week, and attending the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference in Ottawa earlier this week. But the Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington MPP did tell the Toronto Star

earlier this month that a leadership review was necessary and that “to suppress peoples’ opinions only amplifies them,” he said on Thursday, Aug. 8. Party loyalist Mark Hardwick, along with his friend Brett Bell, helped set up a web site called lettimlead.ca, designed to show support for Hudak’s leadership. Asked if he wished that Hillier and Klees had kept their dissatisfaction with Hudak’s leadership an internal matter, Hardwick would only say that “I don’t have an opinion on that. I know Mr. Hillier. I have had him down in my riding,” in Welland, Ont., he said during a telephone interview from his home. The former pro-

vincial riding association president, who helped the Tories with their social media strategy in the 2011 vote as a volunteer, added that “I can’t comment on what Mr. Klees and Mr. Hillier want to do.” As for the leadership review itself, “we’re not about getting signatures or stopping any leadership review. This is not about fighting other people’s views. It is about fighting the enemy, which is the Liberals. The support (for Hudak) is ramping up, as we expected it would. There are a lot of people who feel that Tim should be the next premier. We need to be unified as a party.” Hudak is the MPP for Niagara

West-Glanbrook, which borders Welland, but Hardwick stressed that the pro-Hudak web site was not a creature of the party. “This is a grassroots effort… this has nothing to do with the leader’s office,” said Hardwick. As for the party’s poor showing on Aug. 1, when as many as three seats were likely within their grasp, Hardwick was optimistic about the party’s performance in the summer elections. “I am happy with the seat that got picked up, (taking) a safe seat from the Liberals,” he said of the win by Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday. “We are growing. This (review) is just stopping us from growing more.”
