Henderson fails to make cut at 2013 CN Canadian Women’s Open
NEWS
By THERESA FRITZ theresa.fritz@metroland.com
Sports – Brooke Henderson was unable to replicate the success she has experienced in recent professional matches over the weekend at the crown jewel of Canadian women’s golf. The 15-year-old Smiths Falls native failed to make the cut at the 2013 CN Canadian Women’s Open. She shot 72 in both the opening and second round, ending the two days at 4-over. A total of 73 golfers played through the weekend with the cut coming at a 3-over by the end of play last Friday (Aug. 23). The CN Canadian Women’s Open was won for the second straight year by amateur golfing start Lydia Ko, 16, who shot a final round 6-under 64 over Karine Icher. Henderson approached the CN Open at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alta. with a great deal of confidence, having had great success off the tee in recent events. This marked her third tournament playing with professional golfers this year. She also played two rounds at last year’s CN Canadian Women’s Open. Henderson made the cut and tied for 35th at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in Waterloo. Ont. in July and then tied for 59th at the U.S. Women’s Open in June. She also won the Canadian women’s amateur championship in Beloeil, Que. in July. At that event, she shot a 5-under 66 to finish that tournament at 9-under. That amateur victory was preceded by wins at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship in May and the South American Amateur in January. Prior to the start of the CN Canadian Women’s Open last Thursday, Henderson spoke to the media. She said she was excited to play the Royal May-

HUB pool open to public Sept. 7 By HOWAIDA SOROUR hsorour@perfprint.ca

Community – Don’t pack those bathing suits away just yet because the new community pool is just about ready to open. The HUB swimming pool is set to open on Sept. 7 and the water is pouring in. The issue of how to get water into the pool was easily solved on advice from the town. “The Gallipeau Centre’s private hydrants are close to the pool and would involve no trucking,” explained Ted
Joynt, water and wastewater operations superintendent for the Town of Smiths Falls. “Trucking that much water would involve 22 truck loads minimum, at 4,000 gallons per load. And that would be to just fill the pool, not counting initial pool backwashes etc. The logistics of hauling water would not be cheap considering the trucking fees involved.” In fact, the water started to flow late last week. “The water went on at 2 this afternoon (Aug. 22) and it should be filled by noon tomorrow,” said Amy Rensby,
HUB director responsible for fundraising. Once the pool is filled, the mechanical systems can be booted up to ensure all the new filtration and drainage arrays installed by Superior Pools are working as expected. “Everything is on schedule right now,” said Robert Rodine, vice-chair of the HUB board. Registration for the various programs has also already begun and is ongoing. “There has been so much wonderful feedback and exSee POOL page SF?

Brooke Henderson fair and to see what she could do. “I’ve been looking forward to this event all year. Highlight of my summer was playing in the Manulife, Canadian Open this week, and U.S. Open. It’s such a great atmosphere here with the pros here and the beautiful golf course,” she said. “It just all the fans that are going to come up this week, I’m just really looking forward to it.” When asked prior to the start of the tournament who her mentors were, she had a few names on her list. “I grew up watching my older sister Brittany play, and she’s definitely been a huge influence on my game. Definitely Morgan Pressel and Lori Kane are two that I’ve always looked up to. I’ve had the opportunity to meet both of them and play with both of them in events. So it’s been truly amazing,” she told media in Edmonton. During a post game scrum with media, Henderson admitted her second round had not gone as she had hoped. “(I) started out a little rough. Though I would come back on the back nine and make some birdies but just a little bit of putting out there, missed a little,” Henderson said, adding she has her eye on a professional career. “I would love to play on the LPGA tour in the future.” With files from LPGA.com and Golf Canada.
