Citizenship case for young resident active, OHIP denied STAFF
The Compton family in Smiths Falls continues to wait for news of when their five-year old son, Mateo will be granted health care coverage in Canada, a country he has called home for over a year. Recently, the family received word that their application for Paul Compton to sponsor his wife, Paola and young son’s citizenship had passed first stage approval. This means that the government has agreed, in principle, that the pair can apply for permanent residency, which will in turn start the process to allow them access to health care coverage. “Our family feels relieved that the first stage is approved although it has taken 17 months and two weeks to process this stage of the application,” wrote Paul Compton, in an email interview with the Record News.

Obstacle construction is underway for the inaugural Rise Above the Mud run scheduled for Sept. 19. Volunteers were at the Siloki Centre where the race (in support of the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation) will take place earlier this week to construct approximately 15 wet and dry obstacles. “The idea of the obstacles is to slow people down,” explains John Maloney, member of the organizing committee in a previous Record News article. The 5km and 10 km obstacle race is littered with challenges for the 150 participants who have confirmed their attendance as of Aug. 28. Dan Levesque of New Leaf Carpentry (www.newleafcarpentry.com) has volunteered to construct the obstacles and set them up on site this week. “I increased the incline a little bit,” Levesque admitted. “I kind of went with my gut feeling.” The obstacles were created after hours over a three-weekend period of time. The carpentry staff who volunteered to work on the obstacles will See MUD RACE page SF2
