Representatives of a commuter train company will be asking Smiths Falls council to provide them with a letter of support at a future council session. “I’m sure it’s going to be coming up shortly,” said Coun. John Maloney. Lorraine Allen continues to remain in contact with the commuter train company since their initial meeting in Smiths Falls in 2011, and recently invited Maloney to
attend an Aug. 5 meeting with representatives of Mobility Ottawa-Outaouais: Systems and Enterprises (mOOse) Inc. “It’s was a great meeting,” Maloney said, adding. “They’re just in their infancy.” The project’s scope would include commuter lines running from Smiths Falls, Arnprior, Bristol, Quebec, Montebello, Quebec; Alexandria and all point in between. The Susan Shirley Program (SSP) invites the community to come out and share An Evening Under the City Lights with them Sept. 26 at the Ivy on William. The event will run from 7 to 10 p.m. at 42 William St. W. in Smiths Falls, during which time hosts will ask guests to travel with them to six world-wide cities through the five senses. The big city theme will be carried out in décor, as well as in the plated meal that will be served that evening. Each dish served will be based on the culinary culture of Paris, London, Istanbul or New York to name a few. “We just thought it’s a fun way to add some excitement,” said Nicole Anderson, executive director of SSP. Anderson said they decided to go with An Evening Under the City Lights theme due to the large amount of city décor they were seeing through their store, Duchess Boutique
on Main Street. Duchess Boutique serves as a stable revenue stream for the SSP. It also provides job training for program participants. Some of the décor items available at the boutique will be on display during the dinner to wet the appetite of future customers. This is the first time the SSP has held a dinner fundraiser. They decided to expand on their dessert fundraiser of previous years to accommodate the growing draw the fundraiser enjoyed. In addition to a delicious meal, the Sept. 26 evening will host an art auction with 12 pieces of art available. The works will come from a variety of sources including local artists and store suppliers. The upcoming dinner is one of two large fundraisers the SSP holds each year with all proceeds going to operational costs. These are substantial since SSP is staffed 24 hours a day. Tickets for the evening are See DINNER page SF3
