Town denies request for service extension Stacey Roy

Montague’s request to extend services to fringe areas adjacent to the town does not hold water, according to Smiths Falls councillors who rejected the request at committee this week. “I’m open to talking about annexation but I’m not open to amending our Official Plan,” said Coun. Jay Brennan. The request, formally received by the town on Aug. 11, 2015 from Montague,
requests water and wastewater services be extended to 467 Queen St. (across from the Gallipeau Centre), along Roger Stevens Road and Rideau Street South, and on lands extending along Highway 15, Union Street, Ruthven Street, and Uphill Street. Staff noted an Official Plan (OP) amendment would have to be undertaken to continue discussions on this topic, since the recently approved OP specifically disallows service extension beyond the See SERVICES page SF3 Jennifer Westendorp/METROLAND and Photo Illustration

Volunteers with the Needle Hunter program, part of the municipal drug strategy, were busy searching the playground at Chimo Elementary School in Smiths Falls for needles on Sept. 12. This was prompted after two students found a needle on the property on the first day of school. Inset is a photo illustration depicting the needle found by the student.

The discovery of a syringe by two Chimo Elementary School students this week has prompted school staff and police to urge parents to talk about the dangers of sharp items with their children. “This is a teachable moment and we would ask all parents and guardians to remind their
children that if they find anything unusual they should not touch it and report it immediately to a member of staff,” reads a letter written by Chimo principal Carole Dufort and dated Sept. 9, 2015, which was sent home with students. The syringe was found on the grass by the playground on the first day of school (Sept. 8). The school board confirmed one boy picked up the needle before informing teachers of its existence. The Record News has been able to speak
with the parents of Michael Denham-Flegg, the Grade 3 student who pricked himself with the needle. “He was bleeding,” said the boy’s father, Derek Flegg. Flegg said the school called them at 2:35 p.m. then immediately cleaned and dressed the skin before sending the Grade 3 student home See NEEDLE page SF2
