A new watchdog group is promising to keep tabs on the local Children’s Aid Society. The Citizens Committee for Public and Private Accountability of Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, an offshoot of sorts to a similar, national organization, Canada Court Watch (CCW), had its first major meeting last week. The CCW’s leader, Vernon Beck, was the keynote speaker at the event. His speech, entitled “Your Rights, Your Children’s Rights,” outlining “your rights when dealing with a Children’s Aid Society,” took place at His House church, 40 North St. in Perth, on Thursday, Sept. 17. One of Beck’s major recommendations for parents dealing with the CAS was to videotape or audio record all of their See WATCH-DOG page SF11

Gone are the days of punishment for getting out of your seat in class. This generation of Chimo Elementary School students are encouraged to engage in learning in their own way through innovative methods such as the new Learning Commons. The learning commons concept is being rolled out across the Upper Canada District School Board, but its execution is unique to each school. “It is meant to be student centred,” said Patricia Sutherland, manager of Learning Commons at the board level. Learning Commons is a space where the virtual and electronic tools of today merge seamlessly with traditional paper resources and hands-on opportunities to encourage students to learn through all five of the senses. “We encourage books, of course, but so much of our information is virtual,” Sutherland said. Chimo’s Learning Commons has replaced their library and resource centre, and is one of the largest Sutherland has seen in the board so far. The space incorporates bookshelves with large interactive televisions, a bay of tablets and a variety of seating options (such as traditional chairs, ottomans, couches and fully supported desks that can be reconfigured based on the learning need). “It is quite a transformation,” added Keith Kelsey, a teacher at Chimo and member of the school-driven planning

committee to implement the learning commons for this year. “We wanted to have it purposeful.” The motto of the Learning Commons concept is discover, collaborate, create, and the Smiths Falls school certainly ticks all the boxes with this new multiuse space. Last week, Kristen Hearns, the board’s Learning Commons coordinator was at the school introducing students to the virtual learning commons website (http://vic.ucdsb.ca) and its many functions. According to the board website, this service offers videos, website links, games, software, homework help, and book club chats to name a few. “Technology is not a solution, it’s a tool,” Hearns said. The idea is to focus on teaching children the skills to navigate the information world so they can move with the demands of tomorrow’s economy and push it along as future entrepreneurs. Chimo began tapping into this unique toolbox by completing a pilot project known as the classroom of the future for the start of last year’s academic year. The senior grades have begun their second year in this wired classroom that features standing level tables with whiteboard paint on it. The idea is that students can do their work on the table Stacey Roy/METROLAND itself, take a picture of it with one of 22 tablets in the classroom, load it to their Lauren Bremner, Grade 3 at Chimo Elementary classroom site and present it on their School, is excited to try her hand at the new 3D printlarge interactive television in minutes. er the school has.
