Support key in signage unveiling Stacey Roy

News - Support and encouragement were abundant between golfing sensations Brittany and Brooke Henderson and their hometown, at the unveiling of entrance signs heralding the girls mark on the community. The formal presentation took place Sept. 22 at the corner of William and Cornelia streets where the Henderson sisters jointly removed the cover to reveal a permanent sign in green and gold that reads: “Hometown of Brittany & Brooke Henderson”. Signs of this type are now in place at each of the town’s entrances and serve as a constant reminder of the town’s pride for the Henderson daughters. “They do a great service to the Town

of Smiths Falls in terms of putting us on the map,” said Mayor Dennis Staples. “I couldn’t think of two greater ambassadors for this town.” A large crowd came out this week to honour the girls and celebrate this unique show of support. In introducing the new sign itself, the mayor noted the message behind the term ‘sensational Smiths Falls’, which is to acknowledge its sensational people like the Henderson girls. “This is our small way of saying thank you,” the mayor said. Both girls lit up when they first took in their names above the Sensational Smiths Falls sign. “It’s pretty cool,” remarked Brooke. Both girls thanked the crowd who gathered to mark this special day, as

well as everyone who expresses support throughout the golfing season. Brittany Henderson thanked the crowd, adding there is something special about being from the small town of Smiths Falls. “Where ever we play we’re always proud to be from Smiths Falls,” Brittany said. This weekend Brittany will be taking her pro golfing career to Venice, Florida where she will be competing in stage two for a spot on the LPGA tour. At the same time her younger sister, Brooke will be traveling to Toronto as a member of Team Canada in the World Junior Girls Golf Championship. In January 2015 Brooke will be graduating from SFDCI and moving to Florida to fulfill See HENDERSON page SF2

Parking restrictions aim to improve safety Stacey Roy

Community - Mayor Dennis Staples accepted a signed hat from Brooke (centre) and Brittany Henderson Sept. 22 following the unveiling of the recognition sign atop the entrance signs leading into the community. The hat reads: “All the best Mayor Staples”.

News - A concern for the safety of students has brought a recommendation to restrict parking on Catherine Street in front of St. James the Greater School to councillors’ attention. A motion will be coming to a future council session regarding a request from the school to restrict parking from 8 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. September to June. The restriction would apply to Catherine

Street from Oak Street to 19 Catherine St. Susan Forbes, principal at St. James the Greater said the concern is when parents and students walk between the buses and park near corners making it hard for buses to navigate the bus loading zone in front of the school. “I get it, I’m a parent,” Forbes said. “It just turned into more of a safety hazard than not.” The real problem began last year when the buses between Chimo, St. Francis and St. James became shared.

This doubled the number of buses arriving at St. James daily from five to 10. Bill Dales, route planner for Healey’s Transportation (bus company) said it would be ideal if the restricted area was extended a little further to the corner of Davidson Street as this turn from Davidson to Catherine is very difficult for bus drivers, especially when cars are parked too close to the intersection on See PARKING page SF2
