Team Brooke fan club Saturday, October 5 was officially declared ‘Brooke Henderson Day’ in Smiths Falls. The ceremony took place at the Memorial Community Centre for a very good reason. Howard Jefferys and John McFadden, two local men who survived a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of their wives just outside of Kemptville in August, were able to watch the ceremony from their room at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital across the street. The crowd gathered around the billboard flashing Henderson’s name took a moment to wave to the two men. The day was declared in Henderson’s honour as a way to celebrate her great accomplishments. Members of Brooke Henderson’s family sported ‘Team Brooke’ T-shirts on Oct. 5. Her littlest fans caught everyone’s attention. From left are Nash Storie, Brooke Henderson and Jordon Drummond.

News – A new day has dawned in the Town of Smiths Falls. The pride and joy of the community, Brooke Henderson, is the first local citizen in Mayor Dennis Staples’ memory to have a day named in their honour. “It’s pretty amazing, unbelievable,” said Henderson, “that the town of Smiths Falls thinks so highly of me.” Henderson, at the tender age of 16, is the top-ranked female amateur golfer in Canada and ranked ninth in the world. She has more trophies on her shelves than most elite athletes do by the age of 30 and not a morsel of conceit. “I’m just trying to improve and get better,” said Henderson. “It’s pretty cool when people come up to you and recognize you.” The fame surrounding Henderson has definitely not affected her mannerisms, which can be attributed to the strong foundation of her family members who back her. Henderson’s father, Dave, said that he is proud of his daughter’s many great accomplishments. “Hard work and determination,” he said when asked what’s been key to Brooke’s progress so far. “She’s a good listener and very athletic. All these things combined into success.” Henderson’s family members sported ‘Team Brooke’ T-shirts last Saturday, Oct. 5, now known as ‘Brooke Henderson Day’ in Smiths Falls, as a show of support. Henderson’s grandfather, Clem, said she is a talented and devoted person. “She makes an excellent ambassador for Smiths Falls,” said Clem. “I am very proud of her and my late wife, Beverly, was very proud of her, too.” Henderson, who was born and raised in Smiths Falls, is amazed by the level of support she’s received from the mayor, council and the townspeople. “The members of the golf club, my school and my teachers have all been extremely support-

ive,” she said. The Grade 11 student at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute said the strength of her golf game lies in her long game – off the tee – as well as her approach shots. “I’m working diligently on putting and chipping,” said Brooke. The highlight of her summer, which was full of great achievements, was winning the Canadian Amateur. “Also, playing in three LPGA golf tournaments and making the cut in two,” said Brooke. Brooke has had to turn down quite a bit of prize money, in order to maintain her amateur status in the golf world. However, she doesn’t golf for the money, but rather the love of the game. “I like my amateur status,” said Henderson. “I get to qualify for scholarships for school by staying an amateur.” She intends to stay among the amateur ranks for at least a couple more years. Her goal is to attend university down the road. “Right now, I’m just looking at my options for school,” she said. “It all depends on the next couple of summers I have in golf. I definitely want to go to school.” Her more immediate goal is to improve her amateur world ranking. “I also want to participate in more LPGA tournaments and have better finishes.” Working on her game During the winter months, Brooke says she will be working on both her physical and mental game. She’ll be working as a member of Canada’s national team for a third year, which will keep her game in good shape. This gives her access to top level coaching and allows her to play in events over the winter. Brooke said she loves the challenges of playing the sport. “I love the competition and friends I’ve been able to make all around the world and in Canada,” she explained. “The challenges it See BROOKE page SF2
