Annual Stuff a Cruiser Campaign wraps up another year of success BY EVELYN HARFORD

After Turkey Trains, heavy lifting and multiple trips to the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank, the sixth annual Stuff a Cruiser Campaign, spearheaded by the Smiths Falls Police Service wraps up after its most successful year yet. A total of 4,320 pounds of food and more than $1,000 in cash was donated to the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank just in time for Thanksgiving – up from the 3,288 pounds of food and $30 in cash donations brought into the food bank through the campaign in 2015. “This is the most we’ve ever gotten and I think it’s great,” said Cst. David Murphy, the Smiths Falls Police Community Service Officer. “This will bring the food bank through until basically Christmas, where Build a Mountain of Food (another food drive initiative in the region) will take over from there.” As Smiths Falls police were loading the more than 4,000 pounds into the food bank, with the help of food bank volunteers and high school students, people in town were already lining up outside to collect foodstuffs for this weekend. Smiths Falls Community Food Bank manager Carolyn Barr said

before the contributions to the food bank from the Stuff a Cruiser Campaign, and the large donation from the Lombard Glen Golf and Country Club last weekend, their shelves were going bare. “Without this and Build a Mountain we couldn’t function,” she said. Barr said the numbers of clients walking through the food bank’s doors fluctuate, but remain steady and high – on average she sees between 67 and 99 people per week from all walks of life, including a lot of working poor. Barr added the need for the food bank is constantly growing around two to three per cent per year. The high and increasing usage of the food bank in town is why French teacher at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI), Chantal Séguin, said she feels it’s really important for kids to get involved in the cause. “We know how many students who use the food bank,” said Séguin. “That’s why it’s so important to me, other teachers and the students.” Students at SFDCI collected 1,423 non-perishable food items and raised $1,222.37 in cash for the food bank. Séguin couldn’t be more proud. “They’ve been awesome,” she said after the students had helped Smiths See CAMPAIGN page SF2
