Randy Normandin is a familiar face around the Smiths Falls Fire Department. The veteran firefighter has recently been named fire prevention officer for the town.

News - From his youngest recollections, Randy Normandin has wanted to put on his firefighting suit and serve his community. His new role as fire prevention officer for Smiths Falls takes this

dedication to another level. Normandin officially traded in his full-time firefighting uniform for the fire prevention officer’s role Oct. 6, 2014, just in time to take part in Fire Prevention Week this year. “It went well,” Normandin said. “It’s

amazing to see the response from the kids. They are taking the message home.” The new prevention officer remembers being one of those enthusiastic kids. See PREVENTION page SF2

News – Ongoing research efforts by Montague Township staff and council to establish next steps in dealing with the water loss in the Atironto area is not as swift, residents say, as the 18 gallons of water per minute that is currently being lost by the aged system. “I don’t know what they’re going to do, but they’ve got to do something before winter,” said Noreen Lavier, Atironto resident. “They should have started the next day.” Montague Township received a sounding report by Echologics on Aug. 28, 2014, which was the subject of discussion at a packed council session Oct. 7 where council directed staff to present another report to them detailing the various next-step options with pros and cons and cost implications. “We really, truly are trying to do everything possible,” said Reeve Bill Dobson. “We’re trying to be proactive.” The concern for staff is deciphering where the problem lies: be it under the ground or in a computer. Glenn Barnes, CAO of the township, said Montague staff members are currently reviewing the data output of the water meters put in by the current council in 2012 to see if there may be a computer error in how the information is collected. “There are no peaks and valleys” in the recorded water loss, Barnes added of further study. “Maybe it’s in the math;

maybe we don’t need them at all.” Dobson was quick to point out that little is known for certain in this situation. “There has been no leak found yet,” he said. The consistent nature of the data received does raise questions of a leak existing at all; however, Echologics’ report recommends further inspection, stating: “A leak in the water main is the suspected cause.” Barnes said staff inquiries into echo logics record found them to be on the leading edge in sounding work, according to the Ontario Good Water Association. Echo logics report goes so far as to pinpoint an area 40 feet from the plug at the end of the pipe on Fifth Street as the area of greatest likelihood for a leak. Lavier lives on this street and feels the township should heed the advice of echo logics and move forward with resolving the issue. “I think they should get at it and fix it,” Lavier added. “This, to me, is priority.” Barnes and council seem to agree as Barnes states: “Whatever method we go with let’s attack where the point of interest is,” confirming he is speaking of Fifth Street. The report suggests trenching the area or using ‘potholes’ to try and narrow See ATIRONTO page SF2
