Community - Twinkling lights, and Christmas themed displays are in the works for Victoria Park this year. Together Smiths Falls, the Community Enhancement Association’s Celebration of Lights is under way. “We’re aiming to light up Victoria Park with the help of the community. We’d like to see the whole park lit up and flowing out to other parks, “ said Susan Richards, member of the board of directors for Together Smiths Falls. While that might sound ambitious the group is busy organizing and fundraising to make it happen. “For this year, though I’d be happy if we have 15 to 20 displays supplied by our community partners in addition to what we’ve already purchased,” said Richards. While the association is looking for commitments for displays either from individual business or groups of businesses, churches or schools, they’re also looking for volunteers, sponsorships and donations. “We’re holding an information meeting on Monday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the community centre - upstairs,” said Tracey Pankow, president Together Smiths Falls. “We’d like to see businesses, services clubs, community groups, churches, schools, and individuals come out and learn how they can help.” There are certain safety restrictions regarding lights, displays and electrical hook-up that will be discussed at the meeting and are posted on the Together Smiths Falls website. Groups will also learn about the logisPhoto by HOWAIDA SOROUR tics of setting up displays at that New Fire Chief, Normand Beauchamp an organized communicator is also an avid hockey time. player and the father of two. The association that hosted
Movies Under the Stars and Music in the Park during the summer months has already managed to snag a $10,000 donation from Great West Life and London Life that they’re putting to good use. “We’ve got a 15-foot high surprise, and we’ve purchase about $6,000 worth of displays so far,” said Pankow. The notion behind the Celebration of Lights is to create a fun, free family activity to the community according to Richards. “We also want to keep the businesses and community groups involved in the community throughout the year, and there isn’t a lot happening during the Christmas season,” said Pankow. Right now the association is working closely with the town’s parks and recreation department to ensure adequate electrical service will be available for the project. “Our park is supplied with 30 amp plugs for RVs and what we have to do is turn them back into 20-amp plugs for the lights,” said Gary Bisonette, facilities superintendent, Parks and Recreation. The cost of those upgrades will have to come from Together Smiths Falls, so the more sponsorships they can collect the more plugs will be available for use. “We’re also working with the chamber to see about setting up some sort of security in the park like cameras,” said Pankow. The kick off for the Celebration of Lights is scheduled for Nov. 30. “We’ll have musicians and fire barrels, hot chocolate and I’m hoping to have horse and carriage rides - I’m still working on that,” said Pankow. “The more we can raise the bigger the celebration though,” said Pankow.

News - The new fire chief is in town. A career firefighter, Normand Beauchamp is looking forward to serving in Smiths Falls and started house hunting last weekend. The 40-something Quebec native started his career as a volunteer firefighter before joining full time in 1993. “I discovered firefighting because my stepfather
was a firefighter,” said Beauchamp. He comes to Smiths Falls from Swift Current, Sask. where he was deputy fire chief for three-anda-half years. “He was our deputy of operations and our director of human resources before he left; he was very good, very pleasant and very organized,” said Trevor Brown, acting captain with the Swift Current fire department.
The fire department there has a complement of 19 full-time firefighters and 16 on-call firefighters compared to Smiths Falls, where there are seven fulltime members including the chief, and 24 on-call firefighters. As the deputy chief in Swift Current, Beauchamp is proudest of having changed the structure of the
